PReS: Power Peak Reduction by Real-time Scheduling for Urban Railway Transit

Railway transportation is one of the most popular options for Urban Massive Transportation Systems (UMTS) because of many attractive features. A robust electric power supply is essential to enable normal operation. However, the power peaks appearing at the start time of the vehicles put heavy pressure on the power grid. Reduction of the power peak is a key issue in improving urban railway transit's power efficiency. Researchers have tried to address this problem by making a delicate timetable, but this method often failed to serve the purpose because of the punctuality problem. In this work, taking advantage of real-time estimation of the single train's power consumption, an online Power peak Reduction by real-time Scheduling (PReS) solution for trains' departure is proposed. Particularly, a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) model is introduced that is able to avoid power consumption peak caused by multiple trains departure simultaneously. The simulation result verified that the proposed real-time scheduling approach can effectively reduce the occurrences of power peak without bringing in additional train travel delay.

Clustering Bioactive Molecules in 3D Chemical Space with Unsupervised Deep Learning

Unsupervised clustering has broad applications in data stratification, pattern investigation and new discovery beyond existing knowledge. In particular, clustering of bioactive molecules facilitates chemical space mapping, structure-activity studies, and drug discovery. These tasks, conventionally conducted by similarity-based methods, are complicated by data complexity and diversity. We ex-plored the superior learning capability of deep autoencoders for unsupervised clustering of 1.39 mil-lion bioactive molecules into band-clusters in a 3-dimensional latent chemical space. These band-clusters, displayed by a space-navigation simulation software, band molecules of selected bioactivity classes into individual band-clusters possessing unique sets of common sub-structural features beyond structural similarity. These sub-structural features form the frameworks of the literature-reported pharmacophores and privileged fragments. Within each band-cluster, molecules are further banded into selected sub-regions with respect to their bioactivity target, sub-structural features and molecular scaffolds. Our method is potentially applicable for big data clustering tasks of different fields.

Development of an agent-based speculation game for higher reproducibility of financial stylized facts

Simultaneous reproduction of all financial stylized facts is so difficult that most existing stochastic process-based and agent-based models are unable to achieve the goal. In this study, by extending the decision-making structure of Minority Game, we propose a novel agent-based model called "Speculation Game," for a better reproducibility of the stylized facts. The new model has three distinct characteristics comparing with preceding agent-based adaptive models for the financial market: the enabling of nonuniform holding and idling periods, the inclusion of magnitude information of price change in history, and the implementation of a cognitive world for the evaluation of investment strategies with capital gains and losses. With these features, Speculation Game succeeds in reproducing 10 out of the currently well studied 11 stylized facts under a single parameter setting.

On the blow up phenomenon for the mass critical focusing Hartree equation with inverse-square potential

In this paper, we consider the dynamics of the solution to the mass critical focusing Hartree equation with inverse-square potential in the energy space $H^{1}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. The main difficulties are the equation is \emph{not} space-translation invariant and the nonlinearity is non-local. We first prove that if the mass of the initial data is less than that of ground states, then the solution will be global. Although we don't know whether the ground state is unique, we can verify all the ground states have the same, minimal mass threshold. Then at the minimal mass threshold, we can construct the finite-time blow up solution, which is a pseudo-conformal transformation of the ground state, up to the symmetries of the equation. Finally, we establish an mass concentration phenomenon of the finite-time blow up solution to the equation.

Formation and dilatation of shear bands in a Cu-Zr metallic glass: A free volume perspective

We study the tensile deformation behaviour of metallic glass Cu$_{50}$Zr$_{50}$ as a function of quenching rate using molecular dynamics simulations. The atomic scale shearing is found to be independent on atomic free volume, and the macroscopic correlation between the yield strength and the density (or average free volume) is a coincidence that the samples with large free volume also have a low density of shear-resistant local five-fold symmetry. In the relatively slowly quenched ($\leq 10^{10}$ K/s) samples, shear bands have a dilatation about 0.5\%, which compares well with recent experiment results. In contrast, although more active local shearing occurs in the rapidly quenched samples, shear bands are not observed. This is because the strain energy disperses into local atomic shearing at the macroscopically elastic stage and, hence, is not sufficient for shear band activation, resulting in homogeneous deformation and appreciable plasticity.

Sublinear Algorithms for $(Δ+ 1)$ Vertex Coloring

Any graph with maximum degree $Δ$ admits a proper vertex coloring with $Δ+ 1$ colors that can be found via a simple sequential greedy algorithm in linear time and space. But can one find such a coloring via a sublinear algorithm? We answer this fundamental question in the affirmative for several canonical classes of sublinear algorithms including graph streaming, sublinear time, and massively parallel computation (MPC) algorithms. In particular, we design: * A single-pass semi-streaming algorithm in dynamic streams using $\tilde{O}(n)$ space. The only known semi-streaming algorithm prior to our work was a folklore O(log n)-pass algorithm obtained by simulating classical distributed algorithms in the streaming model. * A sublinear-time algorithm in the standard query model that allows neighbor queries and pair queries using $\tilde{O}(n\sqrt{n})$ time. We further show that any algorithm that outputs a valid coloring with sufficiently large constant probability requires $Ω(n\sqrt{n})$ time. No non-trivial sublinear time algorithms were known prior to our work. * A parallel algorithm in the massively parallel computation (MPC) model using $\tilde{O}(n)$ memory per machine and $O(1)$ MPC rounds. Our number of rounds significantly improves upon the recent $O(\log\logΔ\cdot\log^*{(n)})$-round algorithm of Parter [ICALP 2018]. At the core of our results is a remarkably simple meta-algorithm for the $(Δ+1)$ coloring problem: Sample $O(\log{n})$ colors for each vertex from the $Δ+1$ colors; find a proper coloring of the graph using only the sampled colors. We prove that the sampled set of colors with high probability contains a proper coloring of the input graph. The sublinear algorithms are then obtained by designing efficient algorithms for finding a proper coloring of the graph from the sampled colors in the corresponding models.

An Exploration of Blockchain Enabled Decentralized Capability based Access Control Strategy for Space Situation Awareness

Space situation awareness (SSA) includes tracking of active and inactive resident space objects (RSOs) and assessing the space environment through sensor data collection and processing. To enhance SSA, the dynamic data-driven applications systems (DDDAS) framework couples on-line data with off-line models to enhance system performance. Using feedback control, sensor management, and communications reliability. For information management, there is a need for identity authentication and access control to ensure the integrity of exchanged data as well as to grant authorized entities access right to data and services. Due to decentralization and heterogeneity of SSA systems, it is challenging to build an efficient centralized access control system, which could either be a performance bottleneck or the single point of failure. Inspired by the blockchain and smart contract technology, this paper introduces BlendCAC, a decentralized authentication and capability-based access control mechanism to enable effective protection for devices, services and information in SSA networks. To achieve secure identity authentication, the BlendCAC leverages the blockchain to create virtual trust zones and a robust identity-based capability token management strategy is proposed. A proof-of-concept prototype has been implemented on both resources-constrained devices and more powerful computing devices, and is tested on a private Ethereum blockchain network. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the BlendCAC scheme to offer a decentralized, scalable, lightweight and fine-grained access control solution for space system towards SSA.

Towards Highly Accurate and Stable Face Alignment for High-Resolution Videos

In recent years, heatmap regression based models have shown their effectiveness in face alignment and pose estimation. However, Conventional Heatmap Regression (CHR) is not accurate nor stable when dealing with high-resolution facial videos, since it finds the maximum activated location in heatmaps which are generated from rounding coordinates, and thus leads to quantization errors when scaling back to the original high-resolution space. In this paper, we propose a Fractional Heatmap Regression (FHR) for high-resolution video-based face alignment. The proposed FHR can accurately estimate the fractional part according to the 2D Gaussian function by sampling three points in heatmaps. To further stabilize the landmarks among continuous video frames while maintaining the precise at the same time, we propose a novel stabilization loss that contains two terms to address time delay and non-smooth issues, respectively. Experiments on 300W, 300-VW and Talking Face datasets clearly demonstrate that the proposed method is more accurate and stable than the state-of-the-art models.

A Theoretical Framework of Approximation Error Analysis of Evolutionary Algorithms

In the empirical study of evolutionary algorithms, the solution quality is evaluated by either the fitness value or approximation error. The latter measures the fitness difference between an approximation solution and the optimal solution. Since the approximation error analysis is more convenient than the direct estimation of the fitness value, this paper focuses on approximation error analysis. However, it is straightforward to extend all related results from the approximation error to the fitness value. Although the evaluation of solution quality plays an essential role in practice, few rigorous analyses have been conducted on this topic. This paper aims at establishing a novel theoretical framework of approximation error analysis of evolutionary algorithms for discrete optimization. This framework is divided into two parts. The first part is about exact expressions of the approximation error. Two methods, Jordan form and Schur's triangularization, are presented to obtain an exact expression. The second part is about upper bounds on approximation error. Two methods, convergence rate and auxiliary matrix iteration, are proposed to estimate the upper bound. The applicability of this framework is demonstrated through several examples.

Constructing Trustworthy and Safe Communities on a Blockchain-Enabled Social Credits System

The emergence of big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is reshaping the world. While the technological revolution improves the quality of our life, new concerns are triggered. The superhuman capability enables AI to outperform human workers in many data- and/or computing-intensive tasks. Also, digital superpowers are showing arrogance towards individuals, which erodes the trust foundation of the society. In this position paper, we suggest to construct trustworthy and safe communities based on a BLockchain-Enabled Social credits System (BLESS) that rewards the residents who commit in socially beneficial activities. Human being's true value lies in serving other people. The BLESS system is considered as an efficient approach to promote the value and dignity in efforts focused on enhancing our communities and regulating business and private behaviors. The BLESS system leverages the decentralized architecture of the blockchain network, which not only allows grassroots individuals to participate rating process of a social credit system (SCS), but also provides tamper proof of transaction data in the trustless network environment. The anonymity in blockchain records also protects individuals from being targeted in the fight against powerful enterprises. Smart contract enabled authentication and authorization strategy prevents any unauthorized entity from accessing the credit system. The BLESS scheme is promising to offer a secure, transparent and decentralized SCS.

Automated detection of small-scale magnetic flux ropes in the solar wind: First results from the Wind spacecraft measurements

We have developed a new automated small-scale magnetic flux rope (SSMFR) detection algorithm based on the Grad-Shafranov (GS) reconstruction technique. We have applied this detection algorithm to the Wind spacecraft in-situ measurements during 1996 - 2016, covering two solar cycles, and successfully detected a total number of 74,241 small-scale magnetic flux rope events with duration from 9 to 361 minutes. This large number of small-scale magnetic flux ropes has not been discovered by any other previous studies through this unique approach. We perform statistical analysis of the small-scale magnetic flux rope events based on our newly developed database, and summarize the main findings as follows. (1) The occurrence of small-scale flux ropes has strong solar cycle dependency with a rate of a few hundreds per month on average. (2) The small-scale magnetic flux ropes in the ecliptic plane tend to align along the Parker spiral. (3) In low speed ($<$ 400 km/s) solar wind, the flux ropes tend to have lower proton temperature and higher proton number density, while in high speed ($\ge$ 400 km/s) solar wind, they tend to have higher proton temperature and lower proton number density. (4) Both the duration and scale size distributions of the small-scale magnetic flux ropes obey a power law. (5) The waiting time distribution of small-scale magnetic flux ropes can be fitted by an exponential function (for shorter waiting times) and a power law function (for longer waiting times). (6) The wall-to-wall time distribution obeys double power laws with the break point at 60 minutes (corresponding to the correlation length). (7) The small-scale magnetic flux ropes tend to accumulate near the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). The entire database is available at \url{http://fluxrope.info} and in machine readable format in this article.

Smart Surveillance as an Edge Network Service: from Harr-Cascade, SVM to a Lightweight CNN

Edge computing efficiently extends the realm of information technology beyond the boundary defined by cloud computing paradigm. Performing computation near the source and destination, edge computing is promising to address the challenges in many delay-sensitive applications, like real-time human surveillance. Leveraging the ubiquitously connected cameras and smart mobile devices, it enables video analytics at the edge. In recent years, many smart video surveillance approaches are proposed for object detection and tracking by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. This work explores the feasibility of two popular human-objects detection schemes, Harr-Cascade and HOG feature extraction and SVM classifier, at the edge and introduces a lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (L-CNN) leveraging the depthwise separable convolution for less computation, for human detection. Single Board computers (SBC) are used as edge devices for tests and algorithms are validated using real-world campus surveillance video streams and open data sets. The experimental results are promising that the final algorithm is able to track humans with a decent accuracy at a resource consumption affordable by edge devices in real-time manner.

Fluctuations of Energy-Relaxation Times in Superconducting Qubits

Superconducting qubits are an attractive platform for quantum computing since they have demonstrated high-fidelity quantum gates and extensibility to modest system sizes. Nonetheless, an outstanding challenge is stabilizing their energy-relaxation times, which can fluctuate unpredictably in frequency and time. Here, we use qubits as spectral and temporal probes of individual two-level-system defects to provide direct evidence that they are responsible for the largest fluctuations. This research lays the foundation for stabilizing qubit performance through calibration, design, and fabrication.

High speed flux sampling for tunable superconducting qubits with an embedded cryogenic transducer

We develop a high speed on-chip flux measurement using a capacitively shunted SQUID as an embedded cryogenic transducer and apply this technique to the qualification of a near-term scalable printed circuit board (PCB) package for frequency tunable superconducting qubits. The transducer is a flux tunable LC resonator where applied flux changes the resonant frequency. We apply a microwave tone to probe this frequency and use a time-domain homodyne measurement to extract the reflected phase as a function of flux applied to the SQUID. The transducer response bandwidth is 2.6 GHz with a maximum gain of $\rm 1200^\circ/Φ_0$ allowing us to study the settling amplitude to better than 0.1%. We use this technique to characterize on-chip bias line routing and a variety of PCB based packages and demonstrate that step response settling can vary by orders of magnitude in both settling time and amplitude depending on if normal or superconducting materials are used. By plating copper PCBs in aluminum we measure a step response consistent with the packaging used for existing high-fidelity qubits.

A Survey on Simulation Tools and Testbeds for Cognitive Radio Networks Study

Efficient utility of radio spectrum has been a hot topic as the wireless communication spectrum is a precious resource. The past decade has witnessed intensive research in spectrum sharing techniques. Most of the techniques are based on cognitive radio networks (CRNs) because cognitive capabilities are essential for optimizing spectrum efficiency and guaranteeing safe coexistence in the presence of the spectrum uncertainty. However, due to the high complexity of the problem, most research has been limited to theoretical analysis. It is non-trivial to build a simulator that is capable of carrying out a comprehensive experimental study. In this paper, a survey is conducted to provide a big picture of the available simulators in CRNs research. By illustrating their major functionalities, the insight enables researchers to select tools that match their needs. In addition, with a better understanding of the advantages and constraints, this survey aims at providing a guideline for simulator designers who have been trying to meet the requirements from the CRN research community.

Kerman: A Hybrid Lightweight Tracking Algorithm to Enable Smart Surveillance as an Edge Service

Edge computing pushes the cloud computing boundaries beyond uncertain network resource by leveraging computational processes close to the source and target of data. Time-sensitive and data-intensive video surveillance applications benefit from on-site or near-site data mining. In recent years, many smart video surveillance approaches are proposed for object detection and tracking by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. However, it is still hard to migrate those computing and data-intensive tasks from Cloud to Edge due to the high computational requirement. In this paper, we envision to achieve intelligent surveillance as an edge service by proposing a hybrid lightweight tracking algorithm named Kerman (Kernelized Kalman filter). Kerman is a decision tree based hybrid Kernelized Correlation Filter (KCF) algorithm proposed for human object tracking, which is coupled with a lightweight Convolutional Neural Network (L-CNN) for high performance. The proposed Kerman algorithm has been implemented on a couple of single board computers (SBC) as edge devices and validated using real-world surveillance video streams. The experimental results are promising that the Kerman algorithm is able to track the object of interest with a decent accuracy at a resource consumption affordable by edge devices.

EIQIS: Toward an Event-Oriented Indexable and Queryable Intelligent Surveillance System

Edge computing provides the ability to link distributor users for multimedia content, while retaining the power of significant data storage and access at a centralized computer. Two requirements of significance include: what information show be processed at the edge and how the content should be stored. Answers to these questions require a combination of query-based search, access, and response as well as indexed-based processing, storage, and distribution. A measure of intelligence is not what is known, but is recalled, hence, future edge intelligence must provide recalled information for dynamic response. In this paper, a novel event-oriented indexable and queryable intelligent surveillance (EIQIS) system is introduced leveraging the on-site edge devices to collect the information sensed in format of frames and extracts useful features to enhance situation awareness. The design principles are discussed and a preliminary proof-of-concept prototype is built that validated the feasibility of the proposed idea.

Accurate Energy-Efficient Power Control for Uplink NOMA Systems under Delay Constraint

Machine-type communications (MTC) devices in 5G will use the Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology for massive connections. These devices switch between the transmission mode and the sleep mode for battery saving; and their applications may have diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we develop a new uplink energy-efficient power control scheme for multiple MTC devices with the above mode transition capability and different QoS requirements. By using the effective bandwidth and the effective capacity models, the system's energy efficiency can be formulated as the ratio of the sum effective capacity to the sum energy consumption. Two new analytical models are used in system's energy efficiency maximization problem: 1) two-mode circuitry model and 2) accurate delay-outage approximation model. Simulation shows our proposed scheme is capable of providing exact delay QoS guarantees for NOMA systems.
