A ferroelectric-like structural transition in a metal

Metals cannot exhibit ferroelectricity because static internal electric fields are screened by conduction electrons, but in 1965, Anderson and Blount predicted the possibility of a ferroelectric metal, in which a ferroelectric-like structural transition occurs in the metallic state. Up to now, no clear example of such a material has been identified. Here we report on a centrosymmetric (R-3c) to non-centrosymmetric (R3c) transition in metallic LiOsO3 that is structurally equivalent to the ferroelectric transition of LiNbO3. The transition involves a continuous shift in the mean position of Li+ ions on cooling below 140K. Its discovery realizes the scenario described by Anderson and Blount, and establishes a new class of materials whose properties may differ from those of normal metals.

Evidence for Half-Metallicity in n-type HgCr2Se4

High quality HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ single crystals have been investigated by magnetization, electron transport and Andreev reflection spectroscopy. In the ferromagnetic ground state, the saturation magnetic moment of each unit cell corresponds to an integer number of electron spins (3 $μ_B$/Cr$^{3+}$), and the Hall effect measurements suggest n-type charge carriers. Spin polarizations as high as $97\%$ were obtained from fits of the differential conductance spectra of HgCr$_2$Se$_4$/Pb junctions with the modified Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory. The temperature and bias-voltage dependencies of the sub-gap conductance are consistent with recent theoretical calculations based on spin active scatterings at a superconductor/half metal interface. Our results suggest that n-HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ is a half metal, in agreement with theoretical calculations that also predict undoped HgCr$_2$Se$_4$ is a magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Breakdown of Three-dimensional Dirac Semimetal State in pressurized Cd3As2

We report the first observation of a pressure-induced breakdown of the 3D-DSM state in Cd3As2, evidenced by a series of in-situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and single crystal transport measurements. We find that Cd3As2 undergoes a structural phase transition from a metallic tetragonal (T) phase in space group I41/acd to a semiconducting monoclinic (M) phase in space group P21/c at critical pressure 2.57 GPa, above this pressure, an activation energy gap appears, accompanied by distinct switches in Hall resistivity slope and electron mobility. These changes of crystal symmetry and corresponding transport properties manifest the breakdown of the 3D-DSM state in pressurized Cd3As2.

Quantum oscillations, thermoelectric coefficients and the Fermi surface of semi-metallic WTe2

We present a study of angle-resolved quantum oscillations of electric and thermoelectric transport coefficients in semi-metallic WTe$_{2}$, which has the particularity of displaying a large B$^{2}$ magneto-resistance. The Fermi surface consists of two pairs of electron-like and hole-like pockets of equal volumes in a "Russian doll" structure. Carrier density, Fermi energy, mobility and the mean-free-path of the system are quantified. An additional frequency is observed above a threshold field and attributed to magnetic breakdown across two orbits. In contrast to all other dilute metals, the Nernst signal remains linear in magnetic field even in the high-field ($ω_cτ\gg 1$) regime. Surprisingly, none of the pockets extend across the c-axis of the first Brillouin zone, making the system a three-dimensional metal with moderate anisotropy in Fermi velocity yet a large anisotropy in mean-free-path.

Superconductivity emerging from suppressed large magnetoresistant state in WTe2

The recent discovery of large and non-saturating magnetoresistance (LMR) in WTe2 provides a unique playground to find new phenomena and significant perspective for potential applications. Here we report the first observation of superconductivity near the proximity of suppressed LMR state in pressurized WTe2 through high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction, electrical resistance, magnetoresistance, and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. It is found that the positive magnetoresistance effect can be turned off at a critical pressure of 10.5 GPa without crystal structure change and superconductivity emerges simultaneously. The maximum superconducting transition temperature can be reached to 6.5 K at ~15 GPa and it decreases down to 2.6 K at ~25 GPa. In-situ high pressure Hall coefficient measurements at 10 K demonstrate that elevating pressure decreases hole carrier's population but increases electron carrier's population. Significantly, at the critical pressure, we observed a sign change in the Hall coefficient, indicating a possible Lifshitz-type quantum phase transition in WTe2.

Strong Anisotropy of Dirac Cone in SrMnBi2 and CaMnBi2 Revealed by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The Dirac materials, such as graphene and three-dimensional topological insulators, have attracted much attention because they exhibit novel quantum phenomena with their low energy electrons governed by the relativistic Dirac equations. One particular interest is to generate Dirac cone anisotropy so that the electrons can propagate differently from one direction to the other, creating an additional tunability for new properties and applications. While various theoretical approaches have been proposed to make the isotropic Dirac cones of graphene into anisotropic ones, it has not yet been met with success. There are also some theoretical predictions and/or experimental indications of anisotropic Dirac cone in novel topological insulators and AMnBi2 (A=Sr and Ca) but more experimental investigations are needed. Here we report systematic high resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements that have provided direct evidence on the existence of strongly anisotropic Dirac cones in SrMnBi2 and CaMnBi2. Distinct behaviors of the Dirac cones between SrMnBi2 and CaMnBi2 are also observed. These results have provided important information on the strong anisotropy of the Dirac cones in AMnBi2 system that can be governed by the spin-orbital coupling and the local environment surrounding the Bi square net.

Large linear magnetoresistance in Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 with Fermi surfaces close to the Dirac points

We have investigated the magnetoresistive behavior of Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 down to low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. A positive and linear magnetoresistance (LMR) as large as 3100% is observed in a magnetic field of 14 T, on high-quality single crystals of Cd3As2 with ultra-low electron density and large Lande g factor. Such a large LMR occurs when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to both the current and the (100) surface, and when the temperature is low such that the thermal energy is smaller than the Zeeman splitting energy. Tilting the magnetic field or raising the temperature all degrade the LMR, leading to a less pronounced quadratic behavior. We propose that the phenomenon of LMR is related to the peculiar field-induced shifting/distortion of the helical electrons' Fermi surfaces in momentum space.

Evidence of Topological Surface State in Three-Dimensional Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2

The three-dimensional topological semimetals represent a new quantum state of matter. Distinct from the surface state in the topological insulators that exhibits linear dispersion in two-dimensional momentum plane, the three-dimensional semimetals host bulk band dispersions linearly along all directions, forming discrete Dirac cones in three-dimensional momentum space. In addition to the gapless points (Weyl/Dirac nodes) in the bulk, the three-dimensional Weyl/Dirac semimetals are also characterized by "topologically protected" surface state with Fermi arcs on their specific surface. The Weyl/Dirac semimetals have attracted much attention recently they provide a venue not only to explore unique quantum phenomena but also to show potential applications. While Cd3As2 is proposed to be a viable candidate of a Dirac semimetal, more experimental evidence and theoretical investigation are necessary to pin down its nature. In particular, the topological surface state, the hallmark of the three-dimensional semimetal, has not been observed in Cd3As2. Here we report the electronic structure of Cd3As2 investigated by angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the (112) crystal surface and detailed band structure calculations. The measured Fermi surface and band structure show a good agreement with the band structure calculations with two bulk Dirac-like bands approaching the Fermi level and forming Dirac points near the Brillouin zone center. Moreover, the topological surface state with a linear dispersion approaching the Fermi level is identified for the first time. These results provide strong experimental evidence on the nature of topologically non-trivial three-dimensional Dirac cones in Cd3As2.

Large Linear Magnetoresistance and Shubnikov-de Hass Oscillations in Single Crystals of YPdBi Heusler Topological Insulators

We report the observation of a large linear magnetoresistance (MR) and Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) quantum oscillations in single crystals of YPdBi Heusler topological insulators. Owning to the successfully obtained the high-quality YPdBi single crystals, large non-saturating linear MR of as high as 350% at 5K and over 120% at 300 K under a moderate magnetic field of 7 T is observed. In addition to the large, field-linear MR, the samples exhibit pronounced SdH quantum oscillations at low temperature. Analysis of the SdH data manifests that the high-mobility bulk electron carriers dominate the magnetotransport and are responsible for the observed large linear MR in YPdBi crystals. These findings imply that the Heusler-based topological insulators have superiorities for investigating the novel quantum transport properties and developing the potential applications.

Superconductivity in Bismuth Oxysulfide Bi4O4S3

Bismuth oxysulfide Bi4O4S3, which has recently been claimed to be an exotic superconductor (Tc = 4.5 K), was investigated by magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements as well as by electron probe microanalysis. Single-phase Bi4O4S3 was successfully prepared by a high-pressure method, and its lattice parameters and normal-state resistivity, as well as the density of states at the Fermi level, were found to be comparable to those determined earlier. However, the observed superconductivity was most likely impurity-driven, strictly contradictory to the observations in ongoing experiments. The present results indicate that the superconductivity of Bi4O4S3 does not truly reflect the bulk nature of the BiS2 layered phase, regardless of the manner in which Bi4O4S3 is synthesized. We discuss possible superconducting impurities.
