Optical and orbital characterization of spherically symmetric static black holes of self-gravitating new nonlinear electrodynamics model

Horizon scale imaging and precision lensing have turned black holes into quantitative laboratories for strong gravity and for non standard electromagnetic physics. We study the optical appearance and orbital dynamics of a new class of static spherically symmetric black holes sourced by a Palatini inspired nonlinear electrodynamics model, minimally coupled to Einstein-Hilbert gravity. Using a unified geodesic analysis, we identify the key radii that organize the strong field phenomenology. For photons we determine the unstable photon sphere, the associated critical capture threshold, and the resulting shadow size for a distant observer, and we map how these observables respond to the charge and to the nonlinearity index $n$. For massive probes we compute circular orbits and the innermost stable circular orbit, clarifying the departure from the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstr\"om cases. We then connect to classical tests by evaluating the light deflection angle and periastron advance, providing additional diagnostics that complement the shadow. Our results furnish a practical reference model for confronting first order nonlinear electrodynamics black holes with current and forthcoming imaging and lensing data.

New Black Hole Solutions of Second and First Order Formulations of Nonlinear Electrodynamics

Inspired by the so-called Palatini formulation of General Relativity and of its modifications and extensions, we consider an analogous formulation of the dynamics of a self-interacting gauge field which is determined by non-linear extension of Maxwell's theory, usually known as nonlinear electrodynamics. In this first order formalism the field strength and the gauge potential are treated, a priori as independent, and, as such, varied independently in order to produce the field equations. Accordingly we consider within this formalism alternative and generalized non-linear Lagrangian densities, some of them of a new kind which gives up the restriction of equivalence to second order Lagrangians. Several new spherically-symmetric objects are constructed analytically and their main properties are studied. The solutions are obtained in flat spacetime ignoring gravity and for the self-gravitating case with emphasis on black holes. As a background for comparison between the first and second order formalisms, some of the solutions are obtained by the conventional second order formalism, while for others a first order formalism is applied. Among the self-gravitating solutions we find new families of black holes and study their main characteristics. Some of the flat space solutions can regularize the total energy of a point charge and a subset of them exhibit also finite field strength and energy density, although their black hole counterparts are not regular.

Palatini formulation for gauge theory: implications for slow-roll inflation

We consider a formulation of gauge field theory where the gauge field $A_α$ and the field strength $F_{αβ}$ are independent variables, as in the Palatini formulation of gravity. For the simplest gauge field action, this is known to be equivalent to the usual formulation. We add non-minimal couplings between $F_{αβ}$ and a scalar field, solve for $F_{αβ}$ and insert it back into the action. This leads to modified gauge field and scalar field terms. We consider slow-roll inflation and show that because of the modifications to the scalar sector, adding higher order terms to the inflaton potential does not spoil its flatness, unlike in the usual case. Instead they make the effective potential closer to quadratic. The modifications also solve the problem that Higgs inflation in the Palatini formulation is sensitive to higher order terms.

Can an evolving Universe host a static event horizon?

We prove the existence of general relativistic perfect fluid black hole solutions, and demonstrate the phenomenon for the $P=wρ$ class of equations of state. While admitting a local time-like Killing vector on the event horizon itself, the various black hole configurations are necessarily time dependent (thereby avoiding a well known no-go theorem) away from the horizon. Consistently, Hawking's imaginary time periodicity is globally manifest on the entire spacetime manifold.

Scalar field "mini--MACHOs": a new explanation for galactic dark matter

We examine the possibility that galactic halos are collisionless ensembles of scalar field ``massive compact halo objects'' (MACHOs). Using mass constraints from MACHO microlensing and from theoretical arguments on halos made up of massive black holes, as well as demanding also that scalar MACHO ensambles of all scales do not exhibit gravothermal instability (as required by consistency with observations of LSB galaxies), we obtain the range: $m\alt 10^{-7} M_\odot$ or $30 M_\odot\alt m\alt 100 M_\odot$. The rather narrow mass range of large MACHOs seems to indicate that the ensambles we are suggesting should be probably made up of scalar MACHOs in the low mass range (``mini--MACHOs''). The proposed model allows one to consider a non--baryonic and non--thermal fundamental nature of dark matter, while at the same time keeping the same phenomenology of the CDM paradigm.
