A Knowledge Graph Based Solution for Entity Discovery and Linking in Open-Domain Questions

Named entity discovery and linking is the fundamental and core component of question answering. In Question Entity Discovery and Linking (QEDL) problem, traditional methods are challenged because multiple entities in one short question are difficult to be discovered entirely and the incomplete information in short text makes entity linking hard to implement. To overcome these difficulties, we proposed a knowledge graph based solution for QEDL and developed a system consists of Question Entity Discovery (QED) module and Entity Linking (EL) module. The method of QED module is a tradeoff and ensemble of two methods. One is the method based on knowledge graph retrieval, which could extract more entities in questions and guarantee the recall rate, the other is the method based on Conditional Random Field (CRF), which improves the precision rate. The EL module is treated as a ranking problem and Learning to Rank (LTR) method with features such as semantic similarity, text similarity and entity popularity is utilized to extract and make full use of the information in short texts. On the official dataset of a shared QEDL evaluation task, our approach could obtain 64.44% F1 score of QED and 64.86% accuracy of EL, which ranks the 2nd place and indicates its practical use for QEDL problem.

Constructing Ontology-Based Cancer Treatment Decision Support System with Case-Based Reasoning

Decision support is a probabilistic and quantitative method designed for modeling problems in situations with ambiguity. Computer technology can be employed to provide clinical decision support and treatment recommendations. The problem of natural language applications is that they lack formality and the interpretation is not consistent. Conversely, ontologies can capture the intended meaning and specify modeling primitives. Disease Ontology (DO) that pertains to cancer's clinical stages and their corresponding information components is utilized to improve the reasoning ability of a decision support system (DSS). The proposed DSS uses Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) to consider disease manifestations and provides physicians with treatment solutions from similar previous cases for reference. The proposed DSS supports natural language processing (NLP) queries. The DSS obtained 84.63% accuracy in disease classification with the help of the ontology.

Mg$_{3+δ}$Sb$_x$Bi$_{2-x}$ family: A promising substitute for the start-of-art n-type thermoelectric materials near room temperature

Bi2Te3-xSex family has been the n-type start-of-the-art thermoelectric materials near room temperatures (RT) for more than half-century, which dominates the active cooling and novel waves harvesting application near RT. However, the drawbacks of brittle nature and Te-containing restrict the further applications exploring. Here, we show that a Mg3+δSbxBi2-x family ((ZT)avg =1.05) could be a promising substitute for the Bi2Te3-xSex family ((ZT)avg =0.9-1.0) in the temperature range of 50-250 °C based on the comparable thermoelectric performance through a synergistic effect from the tunable band gap using the alloy effect and the suppressible Mg-vacancy formation using interstitial Mn dopant. The former is to shift the optimal thermoelectric performance to near RT, and latter is helpful to partially decouple the electrical transport and thermal transport in order to get an optimal RT power factor. A positive temperature-dependence of band gap suggested this family is also a superior medium-temperature thermoelectric material for the significantly suppressed bipolar effect. Furthermore, a two times higher mechanical toughness, compared with Bi2Te3-xSex family, consolidates the promising substitute for the start-of-art n-type thermoelectric materials near RT.

Adaptive Re-ranking of Deep Feature for Person Re-identification

Typical person re-identification (re-ID) methods train a deep CNN to extract deep features and combine them with a distance metric for the final evaluation. In this work, we focus on exploiting the full information encoded in the deep feature to boost the re-ID performance. First, we propose a Deep Feature Fusion (DFF) method to exploit the diverse information embedded in a deep feature. DFF treats each sub-feature as an information carrier and employs a diffusion process to exchange their information. Second, we propose an Adaptive Re-Ranking (ARR) method to exploit the contextual information encoded in the features of neighbors. ARR utilizes the contextual information to re-rank the retrieval results in an iterative manner. Particularly, it adds more contextual information after each iteration automatically to consider more matches. Third, we propose a strategy that combines DFF and ARR to enhance the performance. Extensive comparative evaluations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods on three large benchmarks.

AnatomyNet: Deep Learning for Fast and Fully Automated Whole-volume Segmentation of Head and Neck Anatomy

Methods: Our deep learning model, called AnatomyNet, segments OARs from head and neck CT images in an end-to-end fashion, receiving whole-volume HaN CT images as input and generating masks of all OARs of interest in one shot. AnatomyNet is built upon the popular 3D U-net architecture, but extends it in three important ways: 1) a new encoding scheme to allow auto-segmentation on whole-volume CT images instead of local patches or subsets of slices, 2) incorporating 3D squeeze-and-excitation residual blocks in encoding layers for better feature representation, and 3) a new loss function combining Dice scores and focal loss to facilitate the training of the neural model. These features are designed to address two main challenges in deep-learning-based HaN segmentation: a) segmenting small anatomies (i.e., optic chiasm and optic nerves) occupying only a few slices, and b) training with inconsistent data annotations with missing ground truth for some anatomical structures. Results: We collected 261 HaN CT images to train AnatomyNet, and used MICCAI Head and Neck Auto Segmentation Challenge 2015 as a benchmark dataset to evaluate the performance of AnatomyNet. The objective is to segment nine anatomies: brain stem, chiasm, mandible, optic nerve left, optic nerve right, parotid gland left, parotid gland right, submandibular gland left, and submandibular gland right. Compared to previous state-of-the-art results from the MICCAI 2015 competition, AnatomyNet increases Dice similarity coefficient by 3.3% on average. AnatomyNet takes about 0.12 seconds to fully segment a head and neck CT image of dimension 178 x 302 x 225, significantly faster than previous methods. In addition, the model is able to process whole-volume CT images and delineate all OARs in one pass, requiring little pre- or post-processing. https://github.com/wentaozhu/AnatomyNet-for-anatomical-segmentation.git.

High phonon-limited mobility of BAs under pressure

Recent experiment reports that high thermal conductivity of ~1000 W/mK is observed in cubic boron arsenide crystal (BAs). In order to expand the scope of future applications, we use first-principles calculations to investigate the phonon-limited electronic transport in BAs family and modulation effect of pressure. In the case of electron doping, BAs, AlAs and AlSb exhibit the coupling between high frequency optical phonons and electron as well as the low frequency acoustical phonons in BSb. And BAs has the weakest electron-phonon coupling thus has a high N-type carrier mobility of 1740 cm^2/Vs. After the introduction of pressure, phonon spectra has more obvious change than the electronic structure. The phonon hardening under the pressure gives rise to the weakening of electron-phonon coupling. It is obtained that the pressure of 50 GPa can improve the mobility of BAs up to 4300 cm^2/Vs, which is much high and great significance to the current semiconductor industry.

SL$^2$MF: Predicting Synthetic Lethality in Human Cancers via Logistic Matrix Factorization

Synthetic lethality (SL) is a promising concept for novel discovery of anti-cancer drug targets. However, wet-lab experiments for detecting SLs are faced with various challenges, such as high cost, low consistency across platforms or cell lines. Therefore, computational prediction methods are needed to address these issues. This paper proposes a novel SL prediction method, named SL2MF, which employs logistic matrix factorization to learn latent representations of genes from the observed SL data. The probability that two genes are likely to form SL is modeled by the linear combination of gene latent vectors. As known SL pairs are more trustworthy than unknown pairs, we design importance weighting schemes to assign higher importance weights for known SL pairs and lower importance weights for unknown pairs in SL2MF. Moreover, we also incorporate biological knowledge about genes from protein-protein interaction (PPI) data and Gene Ontology (GO). In particular, we calculate the similarity between genes based on their GO annotations and topological properties in the PPI network. Extensive experiments on the SL interaction data from SynLethDB database have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of SL2MF.

Dependence of the absolute value of the penetration depth in $\mathrm{\mathbf{{(Ba_{1-x}K_x)Fe_2As_2}}}$ on doping

We report magnetic force microscopy (MFM) measurements on the iron-based superconductor $\mathrm{Ba_{1-x}K_xFe_2As_2}$. By measuring locally the Meissner repulsion with the magnetic MFM tip, we determine the absolute value of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth ($λ_{ab}$) in underdoped, optimally-doped, and overdoped samples. The results suggest an abrupt increase of $λ_{ab}$ as doping is increased from $x_\mathrm{opt}$, which is potentially related to the presence of a quantum critical point. The response of superconducting vortices to magnetic forces exerted by the MFM tip for $x=0.19$ and $0.58$ is compatible with previously observed structural symmetries at those doping levels.

Dynamics of cold pulses induced by super-sonic molecular beam injection in the EAST tokamak

Evolution of electron temperature, electron density and its fluctuation with high spatial and temporal resolutions are presented for the cold pulse propagation induced by super-sonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) in ohmic plasmas in the EAST tokamak. The non-local heat transport occurs for discharges with plasma current $I_p$=450 kA ($q_{95}\sim5.55$), and electron density $n_{e0}$ below a critical value of $(1.35\pm0.25)\times10^{19}~\mathrm{m^{-3}}$. In contrary to the response of core electron temperature and electron density (roughly 10 ms after SMBI), the electron density fluctuation in the plasma core increases promptly after SMBI and reaches its maximum around 15 ms after SMBI. The electron density fluctuation in the plasma core begins to decrease before the core electron temperature reaches its maximum (roughly 30 ms). It was also observed that the turbulence perpendicular velocity close to the inversion point of the temperature perturbation changes sign after SMBI.

A Benchmark Test of Boson Sampling on Tianhe-2 Supercomputer

Boson sampling, thought to be intractable classically, can be solved by a quantum machine composed of merely generation, linear evolution and detection of single photons. Such an analog quantum computer for this specific problem provides a shortcut to boost the absolute computing power of quantum computers to beat classical ones. However, the capacity bound of classical computers for simulating boson sampling has not yet been identified. Here we simulate boson sampling on the Tianhe-2 supercomputer which occupied the first place in the world ranking six times from 2013 to 2016. We computed the permanent of the largest matrix using up to 312,000 CPU cores of Tianhe-2, and inferred from the current most efficient permanent-computing algorithms that an upper bound on the performance of Tianhe-2 is one 50-photon sample per ~100 min. In addition, we found a precision issue with one of two permanent-computing algorithms.

Independently tunable dual-spectral electromagnetically induced transparency in a terahertz metal-graphene metamaterial

We theoretically investigate the interaction between the conductive graphene layer with the dual-spectral electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metamaterial and achieve independent amplitude modulation of the transmission peaks in terahertz (THz) regime. The dual-spectral EIT resonance results from the strong near field coupling effects between the bright cut wire resonator (CWR) in the middle and two dark double-split ring resonators (DSRRs) on the two sides. By integrating monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonators, the two transmission peaks of the EIT resonance can exhibit independent amplitude modulation via shifting the Fermi level of the corresponding graphene layer. The physical mechanism of the modulation can be attributed to the variation of damping factors of the dark mode resonators arising from the tunable conductivity of graphene. This work shows great prospects in designing multiple-spectral THz functional devices with highly flexible tunability and implies promising applications in multi-channel selective switching, modulation and slow light.

Structure Inference Net: Object Detection Using Scene-Level Context and Instance-Level Relationships

Context is important for accurate visual recognition. In this work we propose an object detection algorithm that not only considers object visual appearance, but also makes use of two kinds of context including scene contextual information and object relationships within a single image. Therefore, object detection is regarded as both a cognition problem and a reasoning problem when leveraging these structured information. Specifically, this paper formulates object detection as a problem of graph structure inference, where given an image the objects are treated as nodes in a graph and relationships between the objects are modeled as edges in such graph. To this end, we present a so-called Structure Inference Network (SIN), a detector that incorporates into a typical detection framework (e.g. Faster R-CNN) with a graphical model which aims to infer object state. Comprehensive experiments on PASCAL VOC and MS COCO datasets indicate that scene context and object relationships truly improve the performance of object detection with more desirable and reasonable outputs.

A complete classification of finite Morse index solutions to elliptic sine-Gordon equation in the plane

The elliptic sine-Gordon equation in the plane has a family of explicit multiple-end solutions (soliton-like solutions). We show that all the finite Morse index solutions belong to this family. We also prove they are non-degenerate in the sense that the corresponding linearized operators have no nontrivial bounded kernel. We then show that solutions with $2n$ ends have Morse index $n(n-1)/2.$

Nondegeneracy of harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$

We prove that all harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$ with finite energy are nondegenerate. That is, for any harmonic map $u$ from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$ of degree $m$ (in $\mathbb Z$), all bounded kernel maps of the linearized operator $L_u$ at $u$ are generated by these harmonic maps near $u$ and hence the real dimension of bounded kernel space of $L_u$ is $4|m|+2$.

High Thermoelectric Performance of Au@Sb2Te3 Heterostructure Derived from the Potential Barriers

The correlated couple of electrical and thermal property is the challenge to realize a substantial leap in thermoelectric materials.Synthesis of semiconductor and metal composites is a significant and versatile design strategy to optimize the thermoelectric performance driven by tailored interface between nanoinclusions and matrix. In this study, we present the simultaneous increase of electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient, and reduction of thermal conductivity in Sb2Te3-Au system. The enhanced electrical conductivity lies in the incorporated Au nanostructures contributing to injecting carriers to Sb2Te3 matrix. The appropriate barriers originated from the Au-Sb2Te3 interface, which filter low energy carriers, results in enhancement of Seebeck coefficient. The increased boundaries and nanodomains block the transport of phonons, subsequently reducing the thermal conductivity. As a consequence, combination of these effects promote double of ZT value in 1% Au@ Sb2Te3 composites with respect to the pristine Sb2Te3.

Type-I and type-II Nodal Lines Coexistence in the Antiferromagnetic monolayer CrAs$_{2}$

Topological nodal line semimetals, hosting one-dimensional Fermi lines with symmetry protection, has become a hot topic in topological quantum matter. Due to the breaking of time reversal symmetry in magnetic system, nodal lines require protection by additional symmetries. Here, we report the discovery of antiferromagnetic type-I and type-II nodal lines coexist in the monolayer CrAs$_{2}$ based on a systematic first-principles calculation. Remarkably, the type-I nodal line in CrAs$_{2}$ form a concentric loop centered around the $Γ$ point is filling-enforced by nonsymmorphic analogue symmetry and robust against spin-orbital coupling. The type-II nodal lines, a kind of open nodal lines appear around the Fermi level, are protected by the mirror symmetry in the absence of spin-orbital coupling. The antiferromagnetic monolayer CrAs$_{2}$ proposed here may provide a platform for the correlation between magnetism and exotic topological phases.

Multi-vortex traveling waves for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Adler-Moser polynomials

For $N\leq34,$ we construct traveling waves with small speed for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, by gluing $N(N+1)/2$ pairs of degree $\pm1$ vortices of the Ginzburg-Landau equation. The location of these vortices is symmetric in the plane and determined by the Adler-Moser polynomials, which has its origin in the study of Calogero-Moser system and rational solutions of the KdV equation. The construction still works for $N>34$, under the additional assumption that the corresponding Adler-Moser polynomial has no repeated root. It is expected that this assumption holds for any $N\in\mathbb{N}$.

Nondegeneracy, Morse Index and Orbital Stability of the Lump Solution to the KP-I Equation

Let $Q(x,y)= 4 \frac{y^2-x^2+3}{ (x^2+y^2+3)^2}$ be the lump solution of the KP-I equation $$ \partial_x^2 (\partial_x^2 u-u + 3 u^2)-\partial_y^2 u=0.$$ We show that this solution is rigid in the following senses: the only decaying solutions to the linearized operator $$ \partial_x^2 (\partial_x^2 ϕ-ϕ+ 6 Q ϕ)-\partial_y^2 ϕ=0$$ consist of the linear combinations of $ \partial_x Q$ and $ \partial_y Q$. Furthermore we show that the Morse index is exactly one and that it is orbital stable.
