Structure and magnetic properties of melilite-type compounds RE2Be2GeO7 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Yb) with Rare-Earth ions on Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Rare-earth (RE) based frustrated magnets as typical systems of combining strong spin-orbit coupling, geometric frustration and anisotropic exchange interactions, can give rise to diverse exotic magnetic ground states such as quantum spin liquid (QSL). The discovery of new RE-based frustrated materials is crucial for exploring the exotic magnetic phases. Herein, we report the synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of a family of melilite-type RE2Be2GeO7 (RE = Pr, Nd, Gd-Yb) compounds crystallized in a tetragonal structure, where magnetic RE3+ ions lay out on Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) within ab-plane and are well separated by nonmagnetic GeBe2O7 polyhedrons along c-axis. Temperature-dependent susceptibilities and isothermal magnetization M(H) measurements reveal that most RE2Be2GeO7 compounds except RE=Tb show no magnetic ordering down to 2 K despite the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions, where Tb2Be2GeO7 undergoes AFM transition with Neel temperature TN~ 2.5 K and field-induced spin flop behaviors (T< TN). In addition, the calculated magnetic entropy change from the isothermal M(H) curves reveal a viable magnetocaloric effect (MCE) for RE2Be2GeO7 (RE =Gd, Dy) in liquid helium temperature regimes, Gd2Be2GeO7 shows maximum Sm up to 54.8 J K-1 Kg-1 at H= 7 T and Dy2Be2GeO7 has largest value Sm=16.1 J K-1 kg-1 at H= 2 T in this family. More excitingly, rich diversity of RE ions in this family enables an archetype for exploring exotic quantum magnetic phenomena with large variability of spin located on SSL lattice.

Feasibility of space-based measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

The measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD is considered to be an alternative to overcome the currently trusted satellite paradigm. However, the feasibility of the space-based MDI-QKD remains unclear in terms of the factors: the high-loss uplink between a ground station and a satellite, the limited duration when two ground stations are simultaneously visible, as well as the rigorous requirements for the two-photon interference when performing the Bell-state Measurement (BSM). In this paper, we present a feasibility assessment of space-based MDI-QKD based on the Micius satellite. Integrated with the orbital dynamics model and atmosphere channel model, a framework is presented to explore the whole parameters space including orbit height, elevation angle, apertures of transceiver and atmospheric turbulence intensity to give the considerations for improving key rates and subsequently provide a relevant parameter tradeoff for the implementation of space-based MDI-QKD. We further investigate the heart of MDI-QKD, the two-photon interference considerations such as the frequency calibration and time synchronization technology against Doppler shift, and the way of performing the intensity optimization method in the dynamic and asymmetric channels. Our work can be used as a pathfinder to support decisions involving as the selection of the future quantum communication satellite missions.

A Hybrid Bandit Framework for Diversified Recommendation

The interactive recommender systems involve users in the recommendation procedure by receiving timely user feedback to update the recommendation policy. Therefore, they are widely used in real application scenarios. Previous interactive recommendation methods primarily focus on learning users' personalized preferences on the relevance properties of an item set. However, the investigation of users' personalized preferences on the diversity properties of an item set is usually ignored. To overcome this problem, we propose the Linear Modular Dispersion Bandit (LMDB) framework, which is an online learning setting for optimizing a combination of modular functions and dispersion functions. Specifically, LMDB employs modular functions to model the relevance properties of each item, and dispersion functions to describe the diversity properties of an item set. Moreover, we also develop a learning algorithm, called Linear Modular Dispersion Hybrid (LMDH) to solve the LMDB problem and derive a gap-free bound on its n-step regret. Extensive experiments on real datasets are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed LMDB framework in balancing the recommendation accuracy and diversity.

Spatial Context-Aware Self-Attention Model For Multi-Organ Segmentation

Multi-organ segmentation is one of most successful applications of deep learning in medical image analysis. Deep convolutional neural nets (CNNs) have shown great promise in achieving clinically applicable image segmentation performance on CT or MRI images. State-of-the-art CNN segmentation models apply either 2D or 3D convolutions on input images, with pros and cons associated with each method: 2D convolution is fast, less memory-intensive but inadequate for extracting 3D contextual information from volumetric images, while the opposite is true for 3D convolution. To fit a 3D CNN model on CT or MRI images on commodity GPUs, one usually has to either downsample input images or use cropped local regions as inputs, which limits the utility of 3D models for multi-organ segmentation. In this work, we propose a new framework for combining 3D and 2D models, in which the segmentation is realized through high-resolution 2D convolutions, but guided by spatial contextual information extracted from a low-resolution 3D model. We implement a self-attention mechanism to control which 3D features should be used to guide 2D segmentation. Our model is light on memory usage but fully equipped to take 3D contextual information into account. Experiments on multiple organ segmentation datasets demonstrate that by taking advantage of both 2D and 3D models, our method is consistently outperforms existing 2D and 3D models in organ segmentation accuracy, while being able to directly take raw whole-volume image data as inputs.

HR-Depth: High Resolution Self-Supervised Monocular Depth Estimation

Self-supervised learning shows great potential in monoculardepth estimation, using image sequences as the only source ofsupervision. Although people try to use the high-resolutionimage for depth estimation, the accuracy of prediction hasnot been significantly improved. In this work, we find thecore reason comes from the inaccurate depth estimation inlarge gradient regions, making the bilinear interpolation er-ror gradually disappear as the resolution increases. To obtainmore accurate depth estimation in large gradient regions, itis necessary to obtain high-resolution features with spatialand semantic information. Therefore, we present an improvedDepthNet, HR-Depth, with two effective strategies: (1) re-design the skip-connection in DepthNet to get better high-resolution features and (2) propose feature fusion Squeeze-and-Excitation(fSE) module to fuse feature more efficiently.Using Resnet-18 as the encoder, HR-Depth surpasses all pre-vious state-of-the-art(SoTA) methods with the least param-eters at both high and low resolution. Moreover, previousstate-of-the-art methods are based on fairly complex and deepnetworks with a mass of parameters which limits their realapplications. Thus we also construct a lightweight networkwhich uses MobileNetV3 as encoder. Experiments show thatthe lightweight network can perform on par with many largemodels like Monodepth2 at high-resolution with only20%parameters. All codes and models will be available at https://github.com/shawLyu/HR-Depth.

Diverse magnetism in stable and metastable structures of CrTe

In this paper, we systematically investigated the structural and magnetic properties of CrTe by combining particle swarm optimization algorithm and first-principles calculations. With the electronic correlation effect considered, we predicted the ground-state structure of CrTe to be NiAs-type (space group P63/mmc) structure at ambient pressure, consistent with the experimental observation. Moreover, we found two extra meta-stable Cmca and R3m structure which have negative formation enthalpy and stable phonon dispersion at ambient pressure. The Cmca structure is a layered antiferromagnetic metal. The cleaved energy of a single layer is 0.464 J/m2, indicating the possible synthesis of CrTe monolayer. R3m structure is a ferromagnetic half-metal. When the pressure was applied, the ground-state structure of CrTe transitioned from P63/mmc to R3m, then to Fm3m structure at a pressure about 34 and 42 GPa, respectively. We thought these results help to motivate experimental studies the CrTe compounds in the application of spintronics.

High Curie Temperature Ferromagnetic Semiconductor: Bimetal Transition Iodide V$_2$Cr$_2$I$_9$

Bimetal transition iodides in two-dimensional scale provide an interesting idea to combine a set of single-transition-metal ferromagnetic semiconductors together. Motivated by structural engineering on bilayer CrI$_3$ to tune its magnetism and works that realize ideal properties by stacking van der Waals transitional metal dichalcogenides in a certain order. Here we stack monolayer VI$_3$ onto monolayer CrI$_3$ with a middle-layer I atoms discarded to construct monolayer V$_2$Cr$_2$I$_9$. Based on this crystal model, the stable and metastable phases are determined among 7 possible phases by first-principles calculations. It is illustrated that both the two phases have Curie temperature $\sim$ 6 (4) times higher than monolayer CrI$_3$ and VI$_3$. The reason can be partly attributed to their large magnetic anisotropy energy (the maximum value reaches 412.9 $μ$eV/atom). More importantly, the Curie temperature shows an electric field and strain dependent character and can even surpass room temperature under a moderate strain range. At last, we believe that the bimetal transition iodide V$_2$Cr$_2$I$_9$ monolayer would support potential opportunities for spintronic devices.

Learning by Analogy: Reliable Supervision from Transformations for Unsupervised Optical Flow Estimation

Unsupervised learning of optical flow, which leverages the supervision from view synthesis, has emerged as a promising alternative to supervised methods. However, the objective of unsupervised learning is likely to be unreliable in challenging scenes. In this work, we present a framework to use more reliable supervision from transformations. It simply twists the general unsupervised learning pipeline by running another forward pass with transformed data from augmentation, along with using transformed predictions of original data as the self-supervision signal. Besides, we further introduce a lightweight network with multiple frames by a highly-shared flow decoder. Our method consistently gets a leap of performance on several benchmarks with the best accuracy among deep unsupervised methods. Also, our method achieves competitive results to recent fully supervised methods while with much fewer parameters.

Micro-cracking, microstructure and mechanical properties of Hastelloy-X alloy printed by laser powder bed fusion: as-built, annealed and hot-isostatic pressed

This study analyses literature data to identify optimised print parameters and assesses the consolidation, microstructure, and mechanical properties of Hastelloy-X printed by laser powder bed fusion. Effects of post annealing and hot-isostatic pressing (HIP) on the microstructure and mechanical properties are also revealed. The susceptibility to the solidification cracking and the as-built microstructure such as precipitation and chemical segregation were predicted by the calculation of thermodynamics phase diagrams. The distribution of solidification cracks throughout the builds was quantified for the as-built, annealed and HIP conditions. The assessment reveals the variation of crack density towards the bottom, top and free surface of solid builds. This distribution of cracks is found to be associate with the thermal gradient and thermal conductivity which were estimated by analytical thermal calculations. While the annealing and HIP both can alter the as-printed microstructure thanks to recovery and recrystallisation, the micro-cracks and pores were only successfully removed by the HIP. In addition to the removal, recrystallisation and precipitation in the HIP (stronger than in annealing), resulting in optimal mechanical properties including a substantial increase in elongation from 13% to 20%, significant improvement of ultimate tensile stress from 965 MPa to 1045 MPa with moderately high yield stress thanks to precipitation.

Towards Persona-Based Empathetic Conversational Models

Empathetic conversational models have been shown to improve user satisfaction and task outcomes in numerous domains. In Psychology, persona has been shown to be highly correlated to personality, which in turn influences empathy. In addition, our empirical analysis also suggests that persona plays an important role in empathetic conversations. To this end, we propose a new task towards persona-based empathetic conversations and present the first empirical study on the impact of persona on empathetic responding. Specifically, we first present a novel large-scale multi-domain dataset for persona-based empathetic conversations. We then propose CoBERT, an efficient BERT-based response selection model that obtains the state-of-the-art performance on our dataset. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments to investigate the impact of persona on empathetic responding. Notably, our results show that persona improves empathetic responding more when CoBERT is trained on empathetic conversations than non-empathetic ones, establishing an empirical link between persona and empathy in human conversations.

Fine Perceptive GANs for Brain MR Image Super-Resolution in Wavelet Domain

Magnetic resonance imaging plays an important role in computer-aided diagnosis and brain exploration. However, limited by hardware, scanning time and cost, it's challenging to acquire high-resolution (HR) magnetic resonance (MR) image clinically. In this paper, fine perceptive generative adversarial networks (FP-GANs) is proposed to produce HR MR images from low-resolution counterparts. It can cope with the detail insensitive problem of the existing super-resolution model in a divide-and-conquer manner. Specifically, FP-GANs firstly divides an MR image into low-frequency global approximation and high-frequency anatomical texture in wavelet domain. Then each sub-band generative adversarial network (sub-band GAN) conquers the super-resolution procedure of each single sub-band image. Meanwhile, sub-band attention is deployed to tune focus between global and texture information. It can focus on sub-band images instead of feature maps to further enhance the anatomical reconstruction ability of FP-GANs. In addition, inverse discrete wavelet transformation (IDWT) is integrated into model for taking the reconstruction of whole image into account. Experiments on MultiRes_7T dataset demonstrate that FP-GANs outperforms the competing methods quantitatively and qualitatively.

Moving Forward in Formation: A Decentralized Hierarchical Learning Approach to Multi-Agent Moving Together

Multi-agent path finding in formation has many potential real-world applications like mobile warehouse robots. However, previous multi-agent path finding (MAPF) methods hardly take formation into consideration. Furthermore, they are usually centralized planners and require the whole state of the environment. Other decentralized partially observable approaches to MAPF are reinforcement learning (RL) methods. However, these RL methods encounter difficulties when learning path finding and formation problem at the same time. In this paper, we propose a novel decentralized partially observable RL algorithm that uses a hierarchical structure to decompose the multi objective task into unrelated ones. It also calculates a theoretical weight that makes every task reward has equal influence on the final RL value function. Additionally, we introduce a communication method that helps agents cooperate with each other. Experiments in simulation show that our method outperforms other end-to-end RL methods and our method can naturally scale to large world sizes where centralized planner struggles. We also deploy and validate our method in a real world scenario.

CL-MAPF: Multi-Agent Path Finding for Car-Like Robots with Kinematic and Spatiotemporal Constraints

Multi-Agent Path Finding has been widely studied in the past few years due to its broad application in the field of robotics and AI. However, previous solvers rely on several simplifying assumptions. They limit their applicability in numerous real-world domains that adopt nonholonomic car-like agents rather than holonomic ones. In this paper, we give a mathematical formalization of Multi-Agent Path Finding for Car-Like robots (CL-MAPF) problem. For the first time, we propose a novel hierarchical search-based solver called Car-like Conflict-Based Search to address this problem. It applies a body conflict tree to address collisions considering shapes of the agents. We introduce a new algorithm called Spatiotemporal Hybrid-State A* as the single-agent path planner to generate path satisfying both kinematic and spatiotemporal constraints. We also present a sequential planning version of our method for the sake of efficiency. We compare our method with two baseline algorithms on a dedicated benchmark containing 3000 instances and validate it in real-world scenarios. The experiment results give clear evidence that our algorithm scales well to a large number of agents and is able to produce solutions that can be directly applied to car-like robots in the real world. The benchmark and source code are released in https://github.com/APRIL-ZJU/CL-CBS.

APB2FaceV2: Real-Time Audio-Guided Multi-Face Reenactment

Audio-guided face reenactment aims to generate a photorealistic face that has matched facial expression with the input audio. However, current methods can only reenact a special person once the model is trained or need extra operations such as 3D rendering and image post-fusion on the premise of generating vivid faces. To solve the above challenge, we propose a novel \emph{R}eal-time \emph{A}udio-guided \emph{M}ulti-face reenactment approach named \emph{APB2FaceV2}, which can reenact different target faces among multiple persons with corresponding reference face and drive audio signal as inputs. Enabling the model to be trained end-to-end and have a faster speed, we design a novel module named Adaptive Convolution (AdaConv) to infuse audio information into the network, as well as adopt a lightweight network as our backbone so that the network can run in real time on CPU and GPU. Comparison experiments prove the superiority of our approach than existing state-of-the-art methods, and further experiments demonstrate that our method is efficient and flexible for practical applications https://github.com/zhangzjn/APB2FaceV2

F-Siamese Tracker: A Frustum-based Double Siamese Network for 3D Single Object Tracking

This paper presents F-Siamese Tracker, a novel approach for single object tracking prominently characterized by more robustly integrating 2D and 3D information to reduce redundant search space. A main challenge in 3D single object tracking is how to reduce search space for generating appropriate 3D candidates. Instead of solely relying on 3D proposals, firstly, our method leverages the Siamese network applied on RGB images to produce 2D region proposals which are then extruded into 3D viewing frustums. Besides, we perform an online accuracy validation on the 3D frustum to generate refined point cloud searching space, which can be embedded directly into the existing 3D tracking backbone. For efficiency, our approach gains better performance with fewer candidates by reducing search space. In addition, benefited from introducing the online accuracy validation, for occasional cases with strong occlusions or very sparse points, our approach can still achieve high precision, even when the 2D Siamese tracker loses the target. This approach allows us to set a new state-of-the-art in 3D single object tracking by a significant margin on a sparse outdoor dataset (KITTI tracking). Moreover, experiments on 2D single object tracking show that our framework boosts 2D tracking performance as well.

Pose Estimation for Ground Robots: On Manifold Representation, Integration, Re-Parameterization, and Optimization

In this paper, we focus on motion estimation dedicated for non-holonomic ground robots, by probabilistically fusing measurements from the wheel odometer and exteroceptive sensors. For ground robots, the wheel odometer is widely used in pose estimation tasks, especially in applications under planar-scene based environments. However, since the wheel odometer only provides 2D motion estimates, it is extremely challenging to use that for performing accurate full 6D pose (3D position and 3D orientation) estimation. Traditional methods on 6D pose estimation either approximate sensor or motion models, at the cost of accuracy reduction, or rely on other sensors, e.g., inertial measurement unit (IMU), to provide complementary measurements. By contrast, in this paper, we propose a novel method to utilize the wheel odometer for 6D pose estimation, by modeling and utilizing motion manifold for ground robots. Our approach is probabilistically formulated and only requires the wheel odometer and an exteroceptive sensor (e.g., a camera). Specifically, our method i) formulates the motion manifold of ground robots by parametric representation, ii) performs manifold based 6D integration with the wheel odometer measurements only, and iii) re-parameterizes manifold equations periodically for error reduction. To demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed algorithmic modules, we integrate that into a sliding-window pose estimator by using measurements from the wheel odometer and a monocular camera. By conducting extensive simulated and real-world experiments, we show that the proposed algorithm outperforms competing state-of-the-art algorithms by a significant margin in pose estimation accuracy, especially when deployed in complex large-scale real-world environments.

Selection of strain and fitting schemes for calculating higher-order elastic constants

Criteria of selecting strain and fitting schemes are proposed for the calculation of higher-order elastic constants more efficiently, robustly and accurately. As demonstrated by the third-order elastic constants (TOECs) of diamond, the proposed method is 3-5 times faster than existing methods, and the range of strain for getting correct TOECs is expanded. In addition, our result provides an evidence for the inaccuracy of some previous experiments caused by higher-order effect, and the difference among experiments and several different theoretical methods is resolved. Finally, we give the recommend TOECs values for diamond.

Effect of controlled point-like disorder induced by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation on nematic resistivity anisotropy of hole-doped (Ba,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$

In-plane anisotropy of electrical resistivity was studied in samples of the hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ in the composition range $0.21 \leq x \leq 0.26$ where anisotropy changes sign. Low-temperature ($\sim$20~K) irradiation with relativistic 2.5 MeV electrons was used to control the level of disorder and residual resistivity of the samples. Modification of the stress-detwinning technique enabled measurements of the same samples before and after irradiation, leading to conclusion of anisotropic character of predominantly inelastic scattering processes. Our main finding is that the resistivity anisotropy is of the same sign irrespective of residual resistivity, and remains the same in the orthorhombic $C_2$ phase above the re-entrant tetragonal transition. Unusual $T$-linear dependence of the anisotropy $Δρ\equiv ρ_a(T)-ρ_b(T)$ is found in pristine samples with $x=$0.213 and $x=$0.219, without similar signatures in either $ρ_a(T)$ or $ρ_b(T)$. We show that this feature can be reproduced by a phenomenological model of R.~M.~Fernandes {\it et al.} Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 107},217002 (2011). We speculate that onset of fluctuations of nematic order on approaching the instability towards the re-entrant tetragonal phase contributes to this unusual dependence.
