Rubick: Exploiting Job Reconfigurability for Deep Learning Cluster Scheduling

The era of large deep learning models has given rise to advanced training strategies such as 3D parallelism and the ZeRO series. These strategies enable various (re-)configurable execution plans for a training job, which exhibit remarkably different requirements of multiple resource types. Existing cluster scheduling systems, however, treat such reconfigurable training jobs as black boxes: they rely on users to choose execution plans statically, and then make resource allocations without awareness of the chosen plans and their resource requirements. This approach results in mismatches between execution plans and resources, making both training performance and cluster utilization far from optimal. We introduce Rubick, a cluster scheduling system for deep learning training that exploits the reconfigurability to improve job performance and cluster efficiency. Rubick incorporates the job execution planning as a new dimension in cluster scheduling, by continuously reconfiguring jobs' execution plans and tuning multi-resource allocations across jobs jointly. Such a co-optimization is navigated by a performance model that understands the diverse resource requirements and performance characteristics of different jobs and execution plans. Rubick exploits such a model to make performance-aware scheduling decisions to maximize cluster throughput while providing performance guarantees to individual jobs. Evaluations on a 64-GPU high-performance training cluster show that Rubick improves average job completion time and makespan by up to 3.2x and 1.4x, respectively, compared against state-of-the-art systems.

MIA-Tuner: Adapting Large Language Models as Pre-training Text Detector

The increasing parameters and expansive dataset of large language models (LLMs) highlight the urgent demand for a technical solution to audit the underlying privacy risks and copyright issues associated with LLMs. Existing studies have partially addressed this need through an exploration of the pre-training data detection problem, which is an instance of a membership inference attack (MIA). This problem involves determining whether a given piece of text has been used during the pre-training phase of the target LLM. Although existing methods have designed various sophisticated MIA score functions to achieve considerable detection performance in pre-trained LLMs, how to achieve high-confidence detection and how to perform MIA on aligned LLMs remain challenging. In this paper, we propose MIA-Tuner, a novel instruction-based MIA method, which instructs LLMs themselves to serve as a more precise pre-training data detector internally, rather than design an external MIA score function. Furthermore, we design two instruction-based safeguards to respectively mitigate the privacy risks brought by the existing methods and MIA-Tuner. To comprehensively evaluate the most recent state-of-the-art LLMs, we collect a more up-to-date MIA benchmark dataset, named WIKIMIA-24, to replace the widely adopted benchmark WIKIMIA. We conduct extensive experiments across various aligned and unaligned LLMs over the two benchmark datasets. The results demonstrate that MIA-Tuner increases the AUC of MIAs from 0.7 to a significantly high level of 0.9.

High-resolution closed-loop seismic inversion network in time-frequency phase mixed domain

Thin layers and reservoirs may be concealed in areas of low seismic reflection amplitude, making them difficult to recognize. Deep learning (DL) techniques provide new opportunities for accurate impedance prediction by establishing a nonlinear mapping between seismic data and impedance. However, existing methods primarily use time domain seismic data, which limits the capture of frequency bands, thus leading to insufficient resolution of the inversion results. To address these problems, we introduce a new time-frequency-phase (TFP) mixed-domain closed-loop seismic inversion network (TFP-CSIN) to improve the identification of thin layers and reservoirs. First, the inversion network and closed-loop network are constructed by using bidirectional gated recurrent units (Bi-GRU) and convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures, enabling bidirectional mapping between seismic data and impedance data. Next, to comprehensive learning across the entire frequency spectrum, the Fourier transform is used to capture frequency information and establish frequency domain constraints. At the same time, the phase domain constraint is introduced through Hilbert transformation, which improves the method's ability to recognize the weak reflection region features. Both experiments on the synthetic data show that TFP-CSIN outperforms the traditional supervised learning method and time domain semi-supervised learning methods in seismic inversion. The field data further verify that the proposed method improves the identification ability of weak reflection areas and thin layers.

Acoustic Impedance Prediction Using an Attention-Based Dual-Branch Double-Inversion Network

Seismic impedance inversion is a widely used technique for reservoir characterization. Accurate, high-resolution seismic impedance data form the foundation for subsequent reservoir interpretation. Deep learning methods have demonstrated significant potential in seismic impedance inversion. Traditional single semi-supervised networks, which directly input original seismic logging data, struggle to capture high-frequency weak signals. This limitation leads to low-resolution inversion results with inadequate accuracy and stability. Moreover, seismic wavelet uncertainty further constrains the application of these methods to real seismic data. To address these challenges, we propose ADDIN-I: an Attention-based Dual-branch Double-Inversion Network for Impedance prediction. ADDIN-I's dual-branch architecture overcomes the limitations of single-branch semi-supervised networks and improves the extraction of high-frequency weak signal features in sequence modeling. The network incorporates an attention mechanism to further enhance its feature extraction capabilities. To adapt the method for real seismic data applications, a deep learning forward operator is employed to fit the wavelet adaptively. ADDIN-I demonstrates excellent performance in both synthetic and real data applications.

Wireless-Powered Mobile Crowdsensing Enhanced by UAV-Mounted RIS: Joint Transmission, Compression, and Trajectory Design

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) enables data collection from massive devices to achieve a wide sensing range. Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising paradigm for prolonging the operation time of MCS systems by sustainably transferring power to distributed devices. However, the efficiency of WPT significantly deteriorates when the channel conditions are poor. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can serve as active or passive relays to enhance the efficiency of WPT in unfavourable propagation environments. Therefore, to explore the potential of jointly deploying UAVs and RISs to enhance transmission efficiency, we propose a novel transmission framework for the WPT-assisted MCS systems, which is enhanced by a UAV-mounted RIS. Subsequently, under different compression schemes, two optimization problems are formulated to maximize the weighted sum of the data uploaded by the user equipments (UEs) by jointly designing the WPT and uploading time, the beamforming matrics, the CPU cycles, and the UAV trajectory. A block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm based on the closed-form beamforming designs and the successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problems. Furthermore, to highlight the insight of the gains brought by the compression schemes, we analyze the energy efficiencies of compression schemes and confirm that the gains gradually reduce with the increasing power used for compression. Simulation results demonstrate that the amount of collected data can be effectively increased in wireless-powered MCS systems.

Fine-tuning Microporosity of Crystalline Vanadomolybdate Frameworks for Selective Adsorptive Separation of Kr from Xe

Selective adsorptive capture and separation of chemically inert Kr and Xe noble gases with very low ppmv concentrations in air and industrial off-gases constitute an important technological challenge. Here, using a synergistic combination of experiment and theory, the microporous crystalline vanadomolybdates (MoVOx) as highly selective Kr sorbents are studied in detail. By varying the Mo/V ratios, we show for the first time that their one-dimensional pores can be fine-tuned for the size-selective adsorption of Kr over the larger Xe with selectivities reaching >100. Using extensive electronic structure calculations and grand canonical Monte-Carlo simulations, the competition between Kr uptake with CO2 and N2 was also investigated. As most materials reported so far are selective toward the larger, more polarizable Xe than Kr, this work constitutes an important step toward robust Kr-selective sorbent materials. This work highlights the potential use of porous crystalline transition metal oxides as energy-efficient and selective noble gas capture sorbents for industrial applications.

Robust Transmission Design for RIS-Assisted Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

As a critical technology for next-generation communication networks, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) aims to achieve the harmonious coexistence of communication and sensing. The degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of ISAC is limited due to multiple performance metrics used for communication and sensing. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) composed of metamaterials can enhance the DoF in the spatial domain of ISAC systems. However, the availability of perfect Channel State Information (CSI) is a prerequisite for the gain brought by RIS, which is not realistic in practical environments. Therefore, under the imperfect CSI condition, we propose a decomposition-based large deviation inequality approach to eliminate the impact of CSI error on communication rate and sensing Cramér-Rao bound (CRB). Then, an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm based on semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and gradient extrapolated majorization-maximization (GEMM) is proposed to solve the transmit beamforming and discrete RIS beamforming problems. We also analyze the complexity and convergence of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can effectively eliminate the influence of CSI error and have good convergence performance. Notably, when CSI error exists, the gain brought by RIS will decrease with the increase of the number of RIS elements. Finally, we summarize and outline future research directions.

A Large-scale Benchmark Dataset for Commuting Origin-destination Matrix Generation

The commuting origin-destination~(OD) matrix is a critical input for urban planning and transportation, providing crucial information about the population residing in one region and working in another within an interested area. Despite its importance, obtaining and updating the matrix is challenging due to high costs and privacy concerns. This has spurred research into generating commuting OD matrices for areas lacking historical data, utilizing readily available information via computational models. In this regard, existing research is primarily restricted to only a single or few large cities, preventing these models from being applied effectively in other areas with distinct characteristics, particularly in towns and rural areas where such data is urgently needed. To address this, we propose a large-scale dataset comprising commuting OD matrices for 3,233 diverse areas around the U.S. For each area, we provide the commuting OD matrix, combined with regional attributes including demographics and point-of-interests of each region in that area. We believe this comprehensive dataset will facilitate the development of more generalizable commuting OD matrix generation models, which can capture various patterns of distinct areas. Additionally, we use this dataset to benchmark a set of commuting OD generation models, including physical models, element-wise predictive models, and matrix-wise generative models. Surprisingly, we find a new paradigm, which considers the whole area combined with its commuting OD matrix as an attributed directed weighted graph and generates the weighted edges based on the node attributes, can achieve the optimal. This may inspire a new research direction from graph learning in this field.

Integrated high-performance error correction for continuous-variable quantum key distribution

An integrated error-correction scheme with high throughput, low frame errors rate (FER) and high reconciliation efficiency under low signal to noise ratio (SNR) is one of the major bottlenecks to realize high-performance and low-cost continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD). To solve this long-standing problem, a novel two-stage error correction method with limited precision that is suitable for integration given limited on-chip hardware resource while maintaining excellent decoding performance is proposed, and experimentally verified on a commercial FPGA. Compared to state-of-art results, the error-correction throughput can be improved more than one order of magnitude given FER<0.1 based on the proposed method, where 544.03 Mbps and 393.33 Mbps real-time error correction is achieved for typical 0.2 and 0.1 code rate, respectively. Besides, compared with traditional decoding method, the secure key rate (SKR) for CV-QKD under composable security framework can be improved by 140.09% and 122.03% by using the proposed two-stage decoding method for codes rate 0.2 and 0.1, which can support 32.70 Mbps and 5.66 Mbps real-time SKR under typical transmission distances of 25 km and 50 km, correspondingly. The record-breaking results paves the way for large-scale deployment of high-rate integrated CV-QKD systems in metropolitan quantum secure network.

PateGail: A Privacy-Preserving Mobility Trajectory Generator with Imitation Learning

Generating human mobility trajectories is of great importance to solve the lack of large-scale trajectory data in numerous applications, which is caused by privacy concerns. However, existing mobility trajectory generation methods still require real-world human trajectories centrally collected as the training data, where there exists an inescapable risk of privacy leakage. To overcome this limitation, in this paper, we propose PateGail, a privacy-preserving imitation learning model to generate mobility trajectories, which utilizes the powerful generative adversary imitation learning model to simulate the decision-making process of humans. Further, in order to protect user privacy, we train this model collectively based on decentralized mobility data stored in user devices, where personal discriminators are trained locally to distinguish and reward the real and generated human trajectories. In the training process, only the generated trajectories and their rewards obtained based on personal discriminators are shared between the server and devices, whose privacy is further preserved by our proposed perturbation mechanisms with theoretical proof to satisfy differential privacy. Further, to better model the human decision-making process, we propose a novel aggregation mechanism of the rewards obtained from personal discriminators. We theoretically prove that under the reward obtained based on the aggregation mechanism, our proposed model maximizes the lower bound of the discounted total rewards of users. Extensive experiments show that the trajectories generated by our model are able to resemble real-world trajectories in terms of five key statistical metrics, outperforming state-of-the-art algorithms by over 48.03%. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the synthetic trajectories are able to efficiently support practical applications, including mobility prediction and location recommendation.

GLOP: Learning Global Partition and Local Construction for Solving Large-scale Routing Problems in Real-time

The recent end-to-end neural solvers have shown promise for small-scale routing problems but suffered from limited real-time scaling-up performance. This paper proposes GLOP (Global and Local Optimization Policies), a unified hierarchical framework that efficiently scales toward large-scale routing problems. GLOP partitions large routing problems into Travelling Salesman Problems (TSPs) and TSPs into Shortest Hamiltonian Path Problems. For the first time, we hybridize non-autoregressive neural heuristics for coarse-grained problem partitions and autoregressive neural heuristics for fine-grained route constructions, leveraging the scalability of the former and the meticulousness of the latter. Experimental results show that GLOP achieves competitive and state-of-the-art real-time performance on large-scale routing problems, including TSP, ATSP, CVRP, and PCTSP.

Existence, Uniqueness and Asymptotic Dynamics of Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations With Quasi-Periodic Initial Data: I. The Standard NLS

This is the first part of a two-paper series studying nonlinear Schrödinger equations with quasi-periodic initial data. In this paper, we consider the standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Under the assumption that the Fourier coefficients of the initial data obey a power-law upper bound, we establish local existence of a solution that retains quasi-periodicity in space with a slightly weaker Fourier decay. Moreover, the solution is shown to be unique within this class of quasi-periodic functions. In addition, for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with small nonlinearity, within the time scale, as the small parameter of nonlinearity tends to zero, we prove that the nonlinear solution converges asymptotically to the linear solution with respect to both the sup-norm $\|\cdot\|_{L_x^\infty(\mathbb R)}$ and the Sobolev-norm $\|\cdot\|_{H^s_x(\mathbb R)}$. The proof proceeds via a consideration of an associated infinite system of coupled ordinary differential equations for the Fourier coefficients and a combinatorial analysis of the resulting tree expansion of the coefficients. For this purpose, we introduce a Feynman diagram for the Picard iteration and $\ast^{[\cdot]}$ to denote the complex conjugate label.

Robust Skin Color Driven Privacy Preserving Face Recognition via Function Secret Sharing

In this work, we leverage the pure skin color patch from the face image as the additional information to train an auxiliary skin color feature extractor and face recognition model in parallel to improve performance of state-of-the-art (SOTA) privacy-preserving face recognition (PPFR) systems. Our solution is robust against black-box attacking and well-established generative adversarial network (GAN) based image restoration. We analyze the potential risk in previous work, where the proposed cosine similarity computation might directly leak the protected precomputed embedding stored on the server side. We propose a Function Secret Sharing (FSS) based face embedding comparison protocol without any intermediate result leakage. In addition, we show in experiments that the proposed protocol is more efficient compared to the Secret Sharing (SS) based protocol.

Infinite-LLM: Efficient LLM Service for Long Context with DistAttention and Distributed KVCache

Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate substantial potential across a diverse array of domains via request serving. However, as trends continue to push for expanding context sizes, the autoregressive nature of LLMs results in highly dynamic behavior of the attention layers, showcasing significant differences in computational characteristics and memory requirements from the non-attention layers. This presents substantial challenges for resource management and performance optimization in service systems. Existing static model parallelism and resource allocation strategies fall short when dealing with this dynamicity. To address the issue, we propose Infinite-LLM, a novel LLM serving system designed to effectively handle dynamic context lengths. Infinite-LLM disaggregates attention layers from an LLM's inference process, facilitating flexible and independent resource scheduling that optimizes computational performance and enhances memory utilization jointly. By leveraging a pooled GPU memory strategy across a cluster, Infinite-LLM not only significantly boosts system throughput but also supports extensive context lengths. Evaluated on a dataset with context lengths ranging from a few to 2000K tokens across a cluster with 32 A100 GPUs, Infinite-LLM demonstrates throughput improvement of 1.35-3.4x compared to state-of-the-art methods, enabling efficient and elastic LLM deployment.

UniST: A Prompt-Empowered Universal Model for Urban Spatio-Temporal Prediction

Urban spatio-temporal prediction is crucial for informed decision-making, such as traffic management, resource optimization, and emergence response. Despite remarkable breakthroughs in pretrained natural language models that enable one model to handle diverse tasks, a universal solution for spatio-temporal prediction remains challenging Existing prediction approaches are typically tailored for specific spatio-temporal scenarios, requiring task-specific model designs and extensive domain-specific training data. In this study, we introduce UniST, a universal model designed for general urban spatio-temporal prediction across a wide range of scenarios. Inspired by large language models, UniST achieves success through: (i) utilizing diverse spatio-temporal data from different scenarios, (ii) effective pre-training to capture complex spatio-temporal dynamics, (iii) knowledge-guided prompts to enhance generalization capabilities. These designs together unlock the potential of building a universal model for various scenarios Extensive experiments on more than 20 spatio-temporal scenarios demonstrate UniST's efficacy in advancing state-of-the-art performance, especially in few-shot and zero-shot prediction. Large Language Model-driven Meta-structure Discovery in Heterogeneous Information Network

Heterogeneous information networks (HIN) have gained increasing popularity in recent years for capturing complex relations between diverse types of nodes. Meta-structures are proposed as a useful tool to identify the important patterns in HINs, but hand-crafted meta-structures pose significant challenges for scaling up, drawing wide research attention towards developing automatic search algorithms. Previous efforts primarily focused on searching for meta-structures with good empirical performance, overlooking the importance of human comprehensibility and generalizability. To address this challenge, we draw inspiration from the emergent reasoning abilities of large language models (LLMs). We propose ReStruct, a meta-structure search framework that integrates LLM reasoning into the evolutionary procedure. ReStruct uses a grammar translator to encode the meta-structures into natural language sentences, and leverages the reasoning power of LLMs to evaluate their semantic feasibility. Besides, ReStruct also employs performance-oriented evolutionary operations. These two competing forces allow ReStruct to jointly optimize the semantic explainability and empirical performance of meta-structures. Furthermore, ReStruct contains a differential LLM explainer to generate and refine natural language explanations for the discovered meta-structures by reasoning through the search history. Experiments on eight representative HIN datasets demonstrate that ReStruct achieves state-of-the-art performance in both recommendation and node classification tasks. Moreover, a survey study involving 73 graduate students shows that the discovered meta-structures and generated explanations by ReStruct are substantially more comprehensible. Our code and questionnaire are available at https://github.com/LinChen-65/ReStruct.

PagPassGPT: Pattern Guided Password Guessing via Generative Pretrained Transformer

Amidst the surge in deep learning-based password guessing models, challenges of generating high-quality passwords and reducing duplicate passwords persist. To address these challenges, we present PagPassGPT, a password guessing model constructed on Generative Pretrained Transformer (GPT). It can perform pattern guided guessing by incorporating pattern structure information as background knowledge, resulting in a significant increase in the hit rate. Furthermore, we propose D&C-GEN to reduce the repeat rate of generated passwords, which adopts the concept of a divide-and-conquer approach. The primary task of guessing passwords is recursively divided into non-overlapping subtasks. Each subtask inherits the knowledge from the parent task and predicts succeeding tokens. In comparison to the state-of-the-art model, our proposed scheme exhibits the capability to correctly guess 12% more passwords while producing 25% fewer duplicates.
