Topological Surface States and Anisotropic Magnetotransport in SnSb$_6$Te$_{10}$

We have investigated the electronic structure and magnetotransport properties of SnSb$_6$Te$_{10}$ single crystals using density functional theory (DFT), synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and quantum transport measurements. Our DFT calculations reveal a clear spin-orbit coupling driven band inversion between the Sb-$p$ and Te-$p$ states together with a non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. The calculated surface-state dispersion and hexagonally warped Fermi surface contours agree well with the ARPES measurements. Temperature-dependent transport measurements indicate dominant electron-phonon scattering, while Hall measurements confirm hole-type carriers with carrier density of the order of $10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$. Both transverse and longitudinal magnetotransport exhibit weak antilocalization behavior, while Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations observed for $H \parallel c$ yield a Berry phase close to $\pi$, consistent with Dirac-like surface states. Furthermore, angle-dependent magnetotransport measurements reveal pronounced anisotropy associated with an anisotropic Fermi surface topology and mixed bulk-surface transport behavior. Our combined theoretical and experimental results establish SnSb$_6$Te$_{10}$ as a strong topological insulator and a promising platform for investigating topological transport phenomena in layered telluride systems.

Discovery of d-orbital order in Tb2CoAl4Ge2

Orbital order describes a quantum state where occupied orbitals line up in a periodic pattern. While orbital physics plays a fundamental and universal role in strongly correlated electron systems, the existence and particularly the band structure fingerprint of orbital order remain a long-standing mystery. Here, we report the discovery of rare earth 5d-orbital order developed by the surface states of intermetallic compound Tb2CoAl4Ge2. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals characteristic nematic features like Fermi surface deformation and band split. These experimental observations can be described by a ferro-orbital order term in the mean-field Hamiltonian. The structural and magnetic origin of such order is excluded by systematic high-resolution neutron powder diffraction and scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements. Our results provide strong evidence for a pure surface orbital order scenario avoiding complications from structural distortion as in colossal magnetoresistance manganites, magnetic order as in iron-based superconductors, and charge transfer p-orbital order in cuprates.

Tunable competing optical excitation pathways in the topological surface states of Bi$_2$Te$_3$

Understanding coherent optical responses of topological surface states (TSSs) requires disentangling excitation pathways from the electronic band structure. Here, using angle-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy, we identify two distinct excitation pathways in the TSSs of Bi$_2$Te$_3$: an off-resonant transition via virtual states and a resonant transition via unoccupied intermediate states. A pronounced modulation of the spectral response is observed, revealing a competition between the two coherent pathways. This competition is tunable via temperature-induced shifts of the chemical potential, which selectively modify the resonant channel. These results provide microscopic insight into the optical excitation mechanisms of TSSs and highlight the potential for controlling their optical responses, relevant for future spintronic devices.

Enhanced and Efficient Extraction of Uranyl Ions from Aqueous Waste through Graphene/CNT-PAMAM Nanocomposites

The increasing threat of uranium contamination to environmental and human health due to its radiotoxicity demands the development of novel and efficient adsorbents for remediation. In this study, we investigated the potential of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of generations 1 to 4 (G1 - G4) functionalized with graphene and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as adsorbents for uranyl ion removal from aqueous solutions. By combining atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with experimental validation, we examined the influence of pH, uranyl ion concentration, and dendrimer generation on adsorption behavior. Our study revealed that uranyl ion adsorption is greater when PAMAM is grafted onto graphene/CNT than pristine PAMAM. However, PAMAM-grafted CNTs exhibit superior adsorption capacity at specific uranyl concentrations due to their curvature and abundant accessible binding sites. Higher-generation PAMAM dendrimers grafted onto graphene/CNTs exhibit greater adsorption capacity due to the increased availability of binding sites, which is consistent with experimental observations. The adsorption capability of uranyl ions in all four generations of the PAMAM dendrimer increased as the concentration of uranyl ions increased. Adsorption capacity increases with increasing uranyl ion concentration, and adsorption occurs on both PAMAM and graphene/CNT surfaces, with saturation observed at higher concentrations. This study provides insights into the adsorption mechanisms and highlights the potential of PAMAM-based nanocomposites for efficient uranyl ion extraction and environmental remediation.

Electronic states in superconducting type-II Dirac semimetal: 1T-PdSeTe

We have investigated the surface and bulk electronic structures of the superconducting type-II Dirac semimetal 1T-PdSeTe. The superconducting transition temperature $T_C = 3.2$ K was almost twice as high as $T_C = 1.6$ K in 1T-PdTe$_2$. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements showed homogeneously mixed Se and Te atoms in the chalcogen layers, consistent with the CdI$_2$-type crystal structure. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations indicated the existence of the topological surface states, and the overall band structures were similar to those of 1T-PdTe$_2$. These results suggest that CdI$_2$-type lattice symmetry dictates the band dispersion, regardless of atomic disorder in the chalcogen layers. As the electronic band dispersion and the local structures were persistent upon substitution, the enhancement of $T_C$ is likely associated with the chemical pressure. Our results provide insight into the effects of the solid solution on the surface and bulk electronic states as well as the superconducting transition temperature.

Search for Origin of Room Temperature Ferromagnetism Properties in Ni doped ZnO Nanostructure

The origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetism (FM) in Ni doped ZnO samples are systematically investigated through physical, optical, and magnetic properties of nanostructure, prepared by simple low-temperature wet chemical method. Reitveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pattern displays an increase in lattice parameters with strain relaxation and contraction in Zn/O occupancy ratio by means of Ni-doping. Similarly scanning electron microscope demonstrates modification in the morphology from nanorods to nanoflakes with Ni doping, suggests incorporation of Ni ions in ZnO. More interestingly, XANES (X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy) measurements confirm that Ni is being incorporated in ZnO as Ni2+. EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) analysis reveals that structural disorders near the Zn sites in the ZnO samples upsurges with increasing Ni concentration. Raman spectroscopy exhibits additional defect driven vibrational mode at 275 cm-1, appeared with Ni-doped sample only and the shift with broadening in 580 cm-1 peak, which manifests the presence of the oxygen vacancy (VO) related defects. Moreover, in photoluminescence (PL) spectra we observed peak appears at 524 nm, indicates the presence of singly ionized VO+, which may activate bound magnetic polarons (BMPs) in dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMSs). Magnetization measurements indicate weak ferromagnetism at RT, which rises with increasing Ni consolidation. It is therefore proposed that effect of the Ni-ions as well as the inherent exchange interactions rising from VO+ assist to produce BMPs, which are accountable for the RT-FM in Zn1-xNixO (0<x<0.125) system.

Sr- and Ni-doping in ZnO nanorods synthesized by simple wet chemical method as excellent materials for CO and CO2 gas sensing

In this study, the effect of Sr- and Ni-doping on microstructural, morphological and sensing properties of ZnO nanorods has been investigated. Nanorods with different Sr and Ni loadings were prepared using a simple wet chemical method and characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. XRD data confirmed that Sr- and Ni-doped samples maintainsthe wurtzite hexagonal structure of pure ZnO. However, unlikes Sr, Ni doping modifies the nanorod morphology, increases the surface area (SA) and decreases the ratio of IUV/Igreen photoluminescence peak to a greater extent. Sensing tests were performed on thick films resistive planar devices for monitoring CO and CO2, as indicators of indoor air quality. The effect of the operating temperature, nature and loading of dopant on the sensibility and selectivity of the fabricated sensors towards these two harmful gases were investigated. The gas sensing characteristics of Ni- and Sr-doped ZnO based sensors showed a remarkable enhancement (i. e. the response increased and shifted towards lower temperature for both gases) compared to ZnO-based one, demonstrating that these ZnO nanostructures are promising to fabricate sensor devices for monitoring indoor air quality.

Synthesis of Ni doped ZnO nanostructures by low temperature wet chemical method and their enhanced field emission properties

In this study, we report the enhancement in field emission (FE) properties of ZnO nanostructure by Ni doping at the base pressure of ~1 x 10-8 mbar, which were grown by the simple wet chemical process. ZnO nanostructure shows single crystalline wurtzite structure up to Ni 10% doping. FESEM represents change in the nanostructure morphology from thick nanoneedles to nanoflakes via thin nanorods with increase in Ni doped ZnO. The turn-on field required to draw a field emission (FE) current density at 1{\mu}A/cm2 is found to be 2.5, 2.3, 1.8 and 1.7 V/{\mu}m for ZnO(Ni0%), ZnO(Ni5%), ZnO(Ni7.5%) and ZnO(Ni10%), respectively.

Enhancement of Two photon absorption with Ni doping in the dilute magnetic Semiconductor ZnO Crystalline Nanorods

In this letter, we have investigated the third-order optical nonlinearities of high-quality Ni doped ZnO nanorods crystallized in wurtzite lattice, prepared by the wet chemical method. In our experiments, we found that the two photon absorption coefficient beta increases by as much as 14 times i.e. 7.6 err 0.4 to 112 err 6 cm per GW, when the Ni doping is increased from 0 to 10 percent. The substantial enhancement in beta is discussed in terms of the bandgap scaling and Ni doping. Furthermore, we also show that the optical bandgap measured by UVVis and photo luminescence spectroscopic, continuously red shift with increasing Ni doping concentration. We envision that the strong nonlinear optical properties together with their dilute magnetic effects, they form an important class of materials for potential applications in magneto-optical and integrated optical chips.

ZnO nanostructured films were prepared by chemical bath deposition method on glass substrates without any assistance of either microwave or high pressure autoclaves. The effect of solute concentration on the pure wurtzite ZnO nanostructure morphologies is studied. The controlling of the solute concentration help to control nano-structure in the form of nano-needles, and rods.
