Hunting micrometer-sized graphene flakes on gold substrate

Gold is widely used as the substrate material in many graphene devices, due to its superior optoelectronic properties and chemical stability. However, there has been little experimental investigation on the optical contrast of graphene films on Au substrates. Here we report accurate measurement of the optical contrast spectra of few-layer graphene flakes on bulk Au. We used a high-resolution optical microscopy with a 100x magnification objective, accurately determining the thickness of flakes as small as one micrometer in lateral size, which are highly desired in many applications. The results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations and confirmed by Raman and AFM measurements. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the optical contrast spectroscopy is sensitive enough to detect the adsorption of a sub-monolayer airborne hydrocarbon molecules, which can reveal whether graphene is con-taminated and opens the opportunity to develop miniaturized and ultrasensitive molecular sensors.

Parity-Check Polar Coding for 5G and Beyond

In this paper, we propose a comprehensive Polar coding solution that integrates reliability calculation, rate matching and parity-check coding. Judging a channel coding design from the industry's viewpoint, there are two primary concerns: (i) low-complexity implementation in application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), and (ii) superior \& stable performance under a wide range of code lengths and rates. The former provides cost- \& power-efficiency which are vital to any commercial system; the latter ensures flexible and robust services. Our design respects both criteria. It demonstrates better performance than existing schemes in literature, but requires only a fraction of implementation cost. With easily-reproducible code construction for arbitrary code rates and lengths, we are able to report "1-bit" fine-granularity simulation results for thousands of cases. The released results can serve as a baseline for future optimization of Polar codes.

Paving the Way to Smart Micro Energy Internet: Concepts, Design Principles, and Engineering Practices

The energy internet is one of the most promising future energy infrastructures that could both enhance energy efficiency and improve its operating flexibility. Analogous to the micro-grid, the micro energy internet emphasizes the distribution level and demand side. This paper proposes concepts and design principles of a smart micro energy internet for accommodating micro-grids, distributed poly-generation systems, energy storage facilities, and associated energy distribution infrastructures. Since the dispatch and control system of the smart micro energy internet is responsible for external disturbances, it should be able to approach a satisfactory operating point while supporting multiple criteria, such as safety, economy, and environmental protection. To realize the vision of a smart micro energy internet, an engineering game theory based energy management system with self-approaching-optimum capability is investigated. Based on the proposed concepts, design principles, and energy management system, this paper presents a prototype of China's first conceptual solar-based smart micro energy internet, established in Qinghai University.

RI/MOM and RI/SMOM renormalization of overlap quark bilinears on domain wall fermion configurations

Renormalization constants (RCs) of overlap quark bilinear operators on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations are calculated by using the RI/MOM and RI/SMOM schemes. The scale independent RC for the axial vector current is computed by using a Ward identity. Then the RCs for the quark field and the vector, tensor, scalar and pseudoscalar operators are calculated in both the RI/MOM and RI/SMOM schemes. The RCs are converted to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and we compare the numerical results from using the two intermediate schemes. The lattice size is $48^3\times96$ and the inverse spacing $1/a = 1.730(4) {\rm~GeV}$.

Glueball relevant study on isoscalars from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD

We perform a glueball-relevant study on isoscalars based on anisotropic $N_f=2$ lattice QCD gauge configurations. In the scalar channel, we identify the ground state obtained through gluonic operators to be a single-particle state through its dispersion relation. When $q\bar{q}$ operator is included, we find the mass of this state does not change, and the $q\bar{q}$ operator couples very weakly to this state. So this state is most likely a glueball state. For pseudoscalars, along with the exiting lattice results, our study implies that both the conventional $q\bar{q}$ state $η_2$ (or $η'$ in flavor $SU(3)$) and a heavier glueball-like state with a mass of roughly 2.6 GeV exist in the spectrum of lattice QCD with dynamical quarks.

Proton mass decomposition

We report the results on the proton mass decomposition and also on the related quark and glue momentum fractions. The results are based on overlap valence fermions on four ensembles of $N_f = 2+1$ DWF configurations with three lattice spacings and volumes, and several pion masses including the physical pion mass. With 1-loop perturbative calculation and proper normalization of the glue operator, we find that the $u, d,$ and $s$ quark masses contribute 9(2)\% to the proton mass. The quark energy and glue field energy contribute 31(5)\% and 37(5)\% respectively in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme at $μ= 2$ GeV. The trace anomaly gives the remaining 23(1)\% contribution. The $u,d,s$ and glue momentum fractions in the $\overline{MS}$ scheme are consistent with the global analysis at $μ= 2$ GeV.

C-arm Tomographic Imaging Technique for Nephrolithiasis and Detection of Kidney Stones

In this paper, we investigated a C-arm tomographic technique as a new three dimensional (3D) kidney imaging method for nephrolithiasis and kidney stone detection over view angle less than 180o. Our C-arm tomographic technique provides a series of two dimensional (2D) images with a single scan over 40o view angle. Experimental studies were performed with a kidney phantom that was formed from a pig kidney with two embedded kidney stones. Different reconstruction methods were developed for C-arm tomographic technique to generate 3D kidney information including: point by point back projection (BP), filtered back projection (FBP), simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique (SART) and maximum likelihood expectation maximization (MLEM). Computer simulation study was also done with simulated 3D spherical object to evaluate the reconstruction results. Preliminary results demonstrated the capability of our C-arm tomographic technique to generate 3D kidney information for kidney stone detection with low exposure of radiation. The kidney stones are visible on reconstructed planes with identifiable shapes and sizes.

Breaking Diversity Restriction: Distributed Optimal Control of Stand-alone DC Microgrids

Stand-alone direct current (DC) microgrids may belong to different owners and adopt various control strategies. This brings great challenge to its optimal operation due to the difficulty of implementing a unified control. This paper addresses the distributed optimal control of DC microgrids, which intends to break the restriction of diversity to some extent. Firstly, we formulate the optimal power flow (OPF) problem of stand-alone DC microgrids as an exact second order cone program (SOCP) and prove the uniqueness of the optimal solution. Then a dynamic solving algorithm based on primal-dual decomposition method is proposed, the convergence of which is proved theoretically as well as the optimality of its equilibrium point. It should be stressed that the algorithm can provide control commands for the three types of microgrids: (i) power control, (ii) voltage control and (iii) droop control. This implies that each microgrid does not need to change its original control strategy in practice, which is less influenced by the diversity of microgrids. Moreover, the control commands for power controlled and voltage controlled microgrids satisfy generation limits and voltage limits in both transient process and steady state. Finally, a six-microgrid DC system based on the microgrid benchmark is adopted to validate the effectiveness and plug-n-play property of our designs.

Distributed Contingency Analysis over Wide Area Network among Dispatch Centers

Traditionally, a regional dispatch center uses the equivalent method to deal with external grids, which fails to reflect the interactions among regions. This paper proposes a distributed N-1 contingency analysis (DCA) solution, where dispatch centers join a coordinated computation using their private data and computing resources. A distributed screening method is presented to determine the Critical Contingency Set (DCCS) in DCA. Then, the distributed power flow is formulated as a set of boundary equations, which is solved by a Jacobi-Free Newton-GMRES (JFNG) method. During solving the distributed power flow, only boundary conditions are exchanged. Acceleration techniques are also introduced, including reusing preconditioners and optimal resource scheduling during parallel processing of multiple contingencies. The proposed method is implemented on a real EMS platform, where tests using the Southwest Regional Grid of China are carried out to validate its feasibility.

On the Capacity of Fractal Wireless Networks With Direct Social Interactions

The capacity of a fractal wireless network with direct social interactions is studied in this paper. Specifically, we mathematically formulate the self-similarity of a fractal wireless network by a power-law degree distribution $ P(k) $, and we capture the connection feature between two nodes with degree $ k_{1} $ and $ k_{2} $ by a joint probability distribution $ P(k_{1},k_{2}) $. It is proved that if the source node communicates with one of its direct contacts randomly, the maximum capacity is consistent with the classical result $ Θ\left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{n\log n}}\right) $ achieved by Kumar \cite{Gupta2000The}. On the other hand, if the two nodes with distance $ d $ communicate according to the probability $ d^{-β} $, the maximum capacity can reach up to $ Θ\left(\frac{1}{\log n}\right) $, which exhibits remarkable improvement compared with the well-known result in \cite{Gupta2000The}.

Investigating the topological structure of quenched lattice QCD with overlap fermions by using multi-probing approximation

The topological charge density and topological susceptibility are determined by multi-probing approximation using overlap fermions in quenched SU(3) gauge theory. Then we investigate the topological structure of the quenched QCD vacuum, and compare it with results from the all-scale topological density, the results are consistent. Random permuted topological charge density is used to check whether these structures represent underlying ordered properties. Pseudoscalar glueball mass is extracted from the two-point correlation function of the topological charge density. We study $3$ ensembles of different lattice spacing $a$ with the same lattice volume $16^{3}\times32$, the results are compatible with the results of all-scale topological charge density, and the topological structures revealed by multi-probing are much closer to all-scale topological charge density than that by eigenmode expansion.

$β$-expansion: A Theoretical Framework for Fast and Recursive Construction of Polar Codes

In this work, we introduce $β$-expansion, a notion borrowed from number theory, as a theoretical framework to study fast construction of polar codes based on a recursive structure of universal partial order (UPO) and polarization weight (PW) algorithm. We show that polar codes can be recursively constructed from UPO by continuously solving several polynomial equations at each recursive step. From these polynomial equations, we can extract an interval for $β$, such that ranking the synthetic channels through a closed-form $β$-expansion preserves the property of nested frozen sets, which is a desired feature for low-complex construction. In an example of AWGN channels, we show that this interval for $β$ converges to a constant close to $1.1892 \approx 2^{1/4}$ when the code block-length trends to infinity. Both asymptotic analysis and simulation results validate our theoretical claims.

A Vector Matroid-Theoretic Approach in the Study of Structural Controllability Over F(z)

In this paper, the structural controllability of the systems over F(z) is studied using a new mathematical method-matroids. Firstly, a vector matroid is defined over F(z). Secondly, the full rank conditions of [sI-A|B] are derived in terms of the concept related to matroid theory, such as rank, base and union. Then the sufficient condition for the linear system and composite system over F(z) to be structurally controllable is obtained. Finally, this paper gives several examples to demonstrate that the married-theoretic approach is simpler than other existing approaches.

Influence of pairing correlations on the radius of neutron-rich nuclei

The influence of pairing correlations on the neutron root mean square (rms) radius of nuclei is investigated in the framework of self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations. The continuum is treated appropriately by the Green's function techniques. As an example the nucleus $^{124}$Zr is treated for a varying strength of pairing correlations. We find that, as the pairing strength increases, the neutron rms radius first shrinks, reaches a minimum and beyond this point it expands again. The shrinkage is due to the the so-called `pairing anti-halo effect', i. e. due to the decreasing of the asymptotic density distribution with increasing pairing. However, in some cases, increasing pairing correlations can also lead to an expansion of the nucleus due to a growing occupation of so-called `halo' orbits, i.e. weakly bound states and resonances in the continuum with low-$\ell $ values. In this case, the neutron radii are extended just by the influence of pairing correlations, since these `halo' orbits cannot be occupied without pairing. The term `anti-halo effect' is not justified in such cases. For a full understanding of this complicated interplay self-consistent calculations are necessary.

Quark chiral condensate from the overlap quark propagator

From the overlap lattice quark propagator calculated in the Landau gauge, we determine the quark chiral condensate by fitting operator product expansion formulas to the lattice data. The quark propagators are computed on domain wall fermion configurations generated by the RBC-UKQCD Collaborations with $N_f=2+1$ flavors. Three ensembles with different light sea quark masses are used at one lattice spacing $1/a=1.75(4)$ GeV. We obtain $\langle\barψψ\rangle^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2\mbox{ GeV})=(-305(15)(21)\mbox{ MeV})^3$ in the SU(2) chiral limit.

Molecule-Induced Conformational Change in Boron Nitride Nanosheets with Enhanced Surface Adsorption

Surface interaction is extremely important to both fundamental research and practical application. Physisorption can induce shape and structural distortion (i.e. conformational changes) in macromolecular and biomolecular adsorbates, but such phenomenon has rarely been observed on adsorbents. Here, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets as an adsorbent experience conformational changes upon surface adsorption of molecules, increasing adsorption energy and efficiency. The study not only provides new perspectives on the strong adsorption capability of BN nanosheets and many other two-dimensional nanomaterials but also opens up possibilities for many novel applications. For example, we demonstrate that BN nanosheets with the same surface area as bulk hBN particles are more effective in purification and sensing.

Programmable graphene doping via electron beam irradiation

Graphene is a promising candidate to succeed silicon based devices and doping holds the key to graphene electronics. Conventional doping methods through surface functionalization or lattice modification are effective in tuning carrier densities. These processes, however, lead to degradation of device performance because of structural defect creation. A challenge remains to controllably dope graphene while preserving its superlative properties. Here we show a novel method for tunable and erasable doping of on-chip graphene, realized by using a focused electron beam. Our results demonstrate site-specific control of carrier type and concentration achievable by modulating the charge distribution in the dielectric substrate. Thereby, the structural integrity and electrical performance of graphene are preserved, and the doping states are rewritable. Different logic operations were thus implemented in a single graphene sheet. By extending this method to other two-dimensional materials, this work lays out a blueprint for powerful yet simple means of incorporating two-dimensional materials into prospective electronic technologies.

Boron Nitride Nanosheets Improve Sensitivity and Reusability of Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a useful multidisciplinary analytic technique. However, it is still a challenge to produce SERS substrates that are highly sensitive, reproducible, stable, reusable, and scalable. Here, we demonstrate that atomically thin boron nitride (BN) nanosheets have many unique and desirable properties to help solve this challenge. The synergic effect of the atomic thickness, high flexibility, stronger surface adsorption capability, electrical insulation, impermeability, high thermal and chemical stability of BN nanosheets can increase the Raman sensitivity by up to two orders, and in the meantime attain long-term stability and extraordinary reusability not achievable by other materials. These advances will greatly facilitate the wider use of SERS in many fields.
