Differentiable Fine-grained Quantization for Deep Neural Network Compression

Neural networks have shown great performance in cognitive tasks. When deploying network models on mobile devices with limited resources, weight quantization has been widely adopted. Binary quantization obtains the highest compression but usually results in big accuracy drop. In practice, 8-bit or 16-bit quantization is often used aiming at maintaining the same accuracy as the original 32-bit precision. We observe different layers have different accuracy sensitivity of quantization. Thus judiciously selecting different precision for different layers/structures can potentially produce more efficient models compared to traditional quantization methods by striking a better balance between accuracy and compression rate. In this work, we propose a fine-grained quantization approach for deep neural network compression by relaxing the search space of quantization bitwidth from discrete to a continuous domain. The proposed approach applies gradient descend based optimization to generate a mixed-precision quantization scheme that outperforms the accuracy of traditional quantization methods under the same compression rate.

Semantic Aware Attention Based Deep Object Co-segmentation

Object co-segmentation is the task of segmenting the same objects from multiple images. In this paper, we propose the Attention Based Object Co-Segmentation for object co-segmentation that utilize a novel attention mechanism in the bottleneck layer of deep neural network for the selection of semantically related features. Furthermore, we take the benefit of attention learner and propose an algorithm to segment multi-input images in linear time complexity. Experiment results demonstrate that our model achieves state of the art performance on multiple datasets, with a significant reduction of computational time.

Discrete Wigner Function Derivation of the Aaronson-Gottesman Tableau Algorithm

The Gottesman-Knill theorem established that stabilizer states and operations can be efficiently simulated classically. For qudits with dimension three and greater, stabilizer states and Clifford operations have been found to correspond to positive discrete Wigner functions and dynamics. We present a discrete Wigner function-based simulation algorithm for odd-$d$ qudits that has the same time and space complexity as the Aaronson-Gottesman algorithm. We show that the efficiency of both algorithms is due to the harmonic evolution in the symplectic structure of discrete phase space. The differences between the Wigner function algorithm and Aaronson-Gottesman are likely due only to the fact that the Weyl-Heisenberg group is not in $SU(d)$ for $d=2$ and that qubits have state-independent contextuality. This may provide a guide for extending the discrete Wigner function approach to qubits.

Semiclassical Formulation of Gottesman-Knill and Universal Quantum Computation

We give a path integral formulation of the time evolution of qudits of odd dimension. This allows us to consider semiclassical evolution of discrete systems in terms of an expansion of the propagator in powers of $\hbar$. The largest power of $\hbar$ required to describe the evolution is a traditional measure of classicality. We show that the action of the Clifford operators on stabilizer states can be fully described by a single contribution of a path integral truncated at order $\hbar^0$ and so are "classical," just like propagation of Gaussians under harmonic Hamiltonians in the continuous case. Such operations have no dependence on phase or quantum interference. Conversely, we show that supplementing the Clifford group with gates necessary for universal quantum computation results in a propagator consisting of a finite number of semiclassical path integral contributions truncated at order $\hbar^1$ , a number that nevertheless scales exponentially with the number of qudits. The same sum in continuous systems has an infinite number of terms at order $\hbar^1$.

Mode Selection, Resource Allocation and Power Control for D2D-Enabled Two-Tier Cellular Network

This paper proposes a centralized decision making framework at the macro base station (MBS) for device to device (D2D) communication underlaying a two-tier cellular network. We consider a D2D pair in the presence of an MBS and a femto access point, each serving a user, with quality of service constraints for all users. Our proposed solution encompasses mode selection (choosing between cellular or reuse or dedicated mode), resource allocation (in cellular and dedicated mode) and power control (in reuse mode) within a single framework. The framework prioritizes D2D dedicated mode if the D2D pair are close to each other and orthogonal resources are available. Otherwise, it allows D2D reuse mode if the D2D satisfies both the maximum distance and an additional interference criteria. For reuse mode, we present a geometric vertex search approach to solve the power allocation problem. We analytically prove the validity of this approach and show that it achieves near optimal performance. For cellular and dedicated modes, we show that frequency sharing maximizes sum rate and solve the resource allocation problem in closed form. Our simulations demonstrate the advantages of the proposed framework in terms of the performance gains achieved in D2D mode.

Maximum penalized quasi-likelihood estimation of the diffusion function

We develop a maximum penalized quasi-likelihood estimator for estimating in a nonparametric way the diffusion function of a diffusion process, as an alternative to more traditional kernel-based estimators. After developing a numerical scheme for computing the maximizer of the penalized maximum quasi-likelihood function, we study the asymptotic properties of our estimator by way of simulation. Under the assumption that overnight London Interbank Offered Rates (LIBOR); the USD/EUR, USD/GBP, JPY/USD, and EUR/USD nominal exchange rates; and 1-month, 3-month, and 30-year Treasury bond yields are generated by diffusion processes, we use our numerical scheme to estimate the diffusion function.
