Quaternionic loci in Siegel's modular threefold

Let $\mathcal Q_D$ be the set of moduli points on Siegel's modular threefold whose corresponding principally polarized abelian surfaces have quaternionic multiplication by a maximal order $\mathcal O$ in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $D$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that the Rosati involution coincides with a positive involution of the form $α\mapstoμ^{-1}\overlineαμ$ on $\mathcal O$ for some $μ\in\mathcal O$ with $μ^2+D=0$. In this paper, we first give a formula for the number of irreducible components in $\mathcal Q_D$, strengthening an earlier result of Rotger. Then for each irreducible component of genus $0$, we determine its rational parameterization in terms of a Hauptmodul of the associated Shimura curve.

Design of a common verification board for different back-end electronics options of the JUNO experiment

The JUNO observatory is a medium baseline experiment in construction in China. A large liquid scintillator volume detects the antineutrinos issued from nuclear reactors. The liquid scintillator detector is instrumented with 17000 large photomultiplier tubes. Two veto systems are added to reduce the backgrounds. The front-end electronics system performs analog signal processing (the underwater electronics) and after about 100 m cables, the back-end electronics system, outside water, consists of the DAQ and the trigger. One of the main challenges of the whole electronics system is the fast data link (250 Mb/s) combined with the power delivery over 100 m Ethernet cables. Three different options are considered to connect the front-end and the back-end systems, depending on the DAQ data volume and the way to deliver the power to the underwater system. In order to test the three options in an efficient and fast way, a common baseboard with interfaces to different mezzanine boards is designed.

Pattern Transitions in a Soft Cylindrical Shell

Instability patterns of rolling up a sleeve appear more intricate than the ones of walking over a rug on floor, both characterized as uniaxially compressed soft-film/stiff-substrate systems. This can be explained by curvature effects. To investigate pattern transitions on a curved surface, we study a soft shell sliding on a rigid cylinder by experiments, computations and theoretical analyses. We reveal a novel post-buckling phenomenon involving multiple successive bifurcations: smooth-wrinkle-ridge-sagging transitions. The shell initially buckles into periodic axisymmetric wrinkles at the threshold and then a wrinkle-to-ridge transition occurs upon further axial compression. When the load increases to the third bifurcation, the amplitude of the ridge reaches its limit and the symmetry is broken with the ridge sagging into a recumbent fold. It is identified that hysteresis loops and the Maxwell equal-energy conditions are associated with the co-existence of wrinkle/ridge or ridge/sagging patterns. Such a bifurcation scheme is inherently general and independent of material constitutive models.

Evaluation of Certain Hypergeometric Functions over Finite Fields

For an odd prime $p$, let $ϕ$ denote the quadratic character of the multiplicative group ${\mathbb F}_p^\times$, where ${\mathbb F}_p$ is the finite field of $p$ elements. In this paper, we will obtain evaluations of the hypergeometric functions $ {}_2F_1\left(\begin{matrix} ϕψ& ψ\\ & ϕ\end{matrix};x\right)$, $x\in {\mathbb F}_p$, $x\neq 0, 1$, over ${\mathbb F}_p$ in terms of Hecke character attached to CM elliptic curves for characters $ψ$ of ${\mathbb F}_p^\times$ of order $3$, $4$, $6$, $8$, and $12$.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Benchmark: Object Detection and Tracking

With the advantage of high mobility, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are used to fuel numerous important applications in computer vision, delivering more efficiency and convenience than surveillance cameras with fixed camera angle, scale and view. However, very limited UAV datasets are proposed, and they focus only on a specific task such as visual tracking or object detection in relatively constrained scenarios. Consequently, it is of great importance to develop an unconstrained UAV benchmark to boost related researches. In this paper, we construct a new UAV benchmark focusing on complex scenarios with new level challenges. Selected from 10 hours raw videos, about 80,000 representative frames are fully annotated with bounding boxes as well as up to 14 kinds of attributes (e.g., weather condition, flying altitude, camera view, vehicle category, and occlusion) for three fundamental computer vision tasks: object detection, single object tracking, and multiple object tracking. Then, a detailed quantitative study is performed using most recent state-of-the-art algorithms for each task. Experimental results show that the current state-of-the-art methods perform relative worse on our dataset, due to the new challenges appeared in UAV based real scenes, e.g., high density, small object, and camera motion. To our knowledge, our work is the first time to explore such issues in unconstrained scenes comprehensively.

Surface phases of the transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe2

Transition-metal dichalcogenide IrTe2 has attracted attention because of striped lattice, charge ordering and superconductivity. We have investigated the surface structure of IrTe2, using low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). A complex striped lattice modulations as a function of temperature is observed, which shows hysteresis between cooling and warming. While the bulk 5x1 and 8x1 phases appear at high temperatures, the surface ground state has the 6x1 phase, not seen in the bulk, and the surface transition temperatures are distinct from the bulk. The broken symmetry at the surface creates a quite different phase diagram, with the coexistence of several periodicities resembling devil's staircase behavior.

Real-time eSports Match Result Prediction

In this paper, we try to predict the winning team of a match in the multiplayer eSports game Dota 2. To address the weaknesses of previous work, we consider more aspects of prior (pre-match) features from individual players' match history, as well as real-time (during-match) features at each minute as the match progresses. We use logistic regression, the proposed Attribute Sequence Model, and their combinations as the prediction models. In a dataset of 78362 matches where 20631 matches contain replay data, our experiments show that adding more aspects of prior features improves accuracy from 58.69% to 71.49%, and introducing real-time features achieves up to 93.73% accuracy when predicting at the 40th minute.

Context-aware Natural Language Generation with Recurrent Neural Networks

This paper studied generating natural languages at particular contexts or situations. We proposed two novel approaches which encode the contexts into a continuous semantic representation and then decode the semantic representation into text sequences with recurrent neural networks. During decoding, the context information are attended through a gating mechanism, addressing the problem of long-range dependency caused by lengthy sequences. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches on user review data, in which rich contexts are available and two informative contexts, sentiments and products, are selected for evaluation. Experiments show that the fake reviews generated by our approaches are very natural. Results of fake review detection with human judges show that more than 50\% of the fake reviews are misclassified as the real reviews, and more than 90\% are misclassified by existing state-of-the-art fake review detection algorithm.

Rational torsion on the generalized Jacobian of a modular curve with cuspidal modulus

We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.

A Time Projection Chamber with GEM-Based Readout

For the International Large Detector concept at the planned International Linear Collider, the use of time projection chambers (TPC) with micro-pattern gas detector readout as the main tracking detector is investigated. In this paper, results from a prototype TPC, placed in a 1 T solenoidal field and read out with three independent GEM-based readout modules, are reported. The TPC was exposed to a 6 GeV electron beam at the DESY II synchrotron. The efficiency for reconstructing hits, the measurement of the drift velocity, the space point resolution and the control of field inhomogeneities are presented.

Equations of hyperelliptic Shimura curves

By constructing suitable Borcherds forms on Shimura curves and using Schofer's formula for norms of values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we determine all the equations of hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)$. As a byproduct, we also address the problem of whether a modular form on Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)/W_{D,N}$ with a divisor supported on CM-divisors can be realized as a Borcherds form, where $X_0^D(N)/W_{D,N}$ denotes the quotient of $X_0^D(N)$ by all the Atkin-Lehner involutions. The construction of Borcherds forms is done by solving certain integer programming problems.

Special values of hypergeometric functions and periods of CM elliptic curves

Let $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ be the Atkin-Lehner quotient of the Shimura curve $X_0^6(1)$ associated to a maximal order in an indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $6$ over $\mathbb Q$. By realizing modular forms on $X_0^6(1)/W_6$ in two ways, one in terms of hypergeometric functions and the other in terms of Borcherds forms, and using Schofer's formula for values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we obtain special values of certain hypergeometric functions in terms of periods of elliptic curves over $\overline\mathbb Q$ with complex multiplication.

Ramanujan-type identities for Shimura curves

In 1914, Ramanujan gave a list of 17 identities expressing $1/π$ as linear combinations of values of hypergeometric functions at certain rational numbers. Since then, identities of similar nature have been discovered by many authors. Nowadays, one of the standard approaches to this kind of identities uses the theory of modular curves. In this paper, we will consider the case of Shimura curves and obtain Ramanujan-type formulas involving special values of hypergeometric functions and products of Gamma values. The product of Gamma values are related to periods of elliptic curves with complex multiplication by Q(\sqrt{-3}) and Q(\sqrt{-4}).

Computing modular equations for Shimura curves

In the classical setting, the modular equation of level $N$ for the modular curve $X_0(1)$ is the polynomial relation satisfied by $j(τ)$ and $j(Nτ)$, where $j(τ)$ is the standard elliptic $j$-function. In this paper, we will describe a method to compute modular equations in the setting of Shimura curves. The main ingredient is the explicit method for computing Hecke operators on the spaces of modular forms on Shimura curves developed in [13].

Schwarzian differential equations and Hecke eigenforms on Shimura curves

Let $X$ be a Shimura curve of genus zero. In this paper, we first characterize the spaces of automorphic forms on $X$ in terms of Schwarzian differential equations. We then devise a method to compute Hecke operators on these spaces. An interesting by-product of our analysis is the evaluation $$_2F_1(1/24,7/24,5/6, -\frac{2^{10}\cdot3^3\cdot5}{11^4})=\sqrt6 \sqrt[6]{\frac{11}{5^5}} $$ and other similar identities.

Jacobsthal identity for Q(sqrt(-2))

Let $p$ be a prime congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8 so that the equation $p=a^2+2b^2$ is solvable in integers. In this paper, we obtain closed-form expressions for $a$ and $b$ in terms of Jacobsthal sums. This is analogous to a classical identity of Jacobsthal.
