The Implied Views of Bond Traders on the Spot Equity Market

This study delves into the temporal dynamics within the equity market through the lens of bond traders. Recognizing that the riskless interest rate fluctuates over time, we leverage the Black-Derman-Toy model to trace its temporal evolution. To gain insights from a bond trader's perspective, we focus on a specific type of bond: the zero-coupon bond. This paper introduces a pricing algorithm for this bond and presents a formula that can be used to ascertain its real value. By crafting an equation that juxtaposes the theoretical value of a zero-coupon bond with its actual value, we can deduce the risk-neutral probability. It is noteworthy that the risk-neutral probability correlates with variables like the instantaneous mean return, instantaneous volatility, and inherent upturn probability in the equity market. Examining these relationships enables us to discern the temporal shifts in these parameters. Our findings suggest that the mean starts at a negative value, eventually plateauing at a consistent level. The volatility, on the other hand, initially has a minimal positive value, peaks swiftly, and then stabilizes. Lastly, the upturn probability is initially significantly high, plunges rapidly, and ultimately reaches equilibrium.

Exploring Implied Certainty Equivalent Rates in Financial Markets: Empirical Analysis and Application to the Electric Vehicle Industry

In this paper, we mainly study the impact of the implied certainty equivalent rate on investment in financial markets. First, we derived the mathematical expression of the implied certainty equivalent rate by using put-call parity, and then we selected some company stocks and options; we considered the best-performing and worst-performing company stocks and options from the beginning of 2023 to the present for empirical research. By visualizing the relationship between the time to maturity, moneyness, and implied certainty equivalent rate of these options, we have obtained a universal conclusion -- a positive implied certainty equivalent rate is more suitable for investment than a negative implied certainty equivalent rate, but for a positive implied certainty equivalent rate, a larger value also means a higher investment risk. Next, we applied these results to the electric vehicle industry, and by comparing several well-known US electric vehicle production companies, we further strengthened our conclusions. Finally, we give a warning concerning risk, that is, investment in the financial market should not focus solely on the implied certainty equivalent rate, because investment is not an easy task, and many factors need to be considered, including some factors that are difficult to predict with models.

DDAC-SpAM: A Distributed Algorithm for Fitting High-dimensional Sparse Additive Models with Feature Division and Decorrelation

Distributed statistical learning has become a popular technique for large-scale data analysis. Most existing work in this area focuses on dividing the observations, but we propose a new algorithm, DDAC-SpAM, which divides the features under a high-dimensional sparse additive model. Our approach involves three steps: divide, decorrelate, and conquer. The decorrelation operation enables each local estimator to recover the sparsity pattern for each additive component without imposing strict constraints on the correlation structure among variables. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated through theoretical analysis and empirical results on both synthetic and real data. The theoretical results include both the consistent sparsity pattern recovery as well as statistical inference for each additive functional component. Our approach provides a practical solution for fitting sparse additive models, with promising applications in a wide range of domains.

Inconsistency Ranking-based Noisy Label Detection for High-quality Data

The success of deep learning requires high-quality annotated and massive data. However, the size and the quality of a dataset are usually a trade-off in practice, as data collection and cleaning are expensive and time-consuming. In real-world applications, especially those using crowdsourcing datasets, it is important to exclude noisy labels. To address this, this paper proposes an automatic noisy label detection (NLD) technique with inconsistency ranking for high-quality data. We apply this technique to the automatic speaker verification (ASV) task as a proof of concept. We investigate both inter-class and intra-class inconsistency ranking and compare several metric learning loss functions under different noise settings. Experimental results confirm that the proposed solution could increase both the efficient and effective cleaning of large-scale speaker recognition datasets.

Text-Aware Dual Routing Network for Visual Question Answering

Visual question answering (VQA) is a challenging task to provide an accurate natural language answer given an image and a natural language question about the image. It involves multi-modal learning, i.e., computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP), as well as flexible answer prediction for free-form and open-ended answers. Existing approaches often fail in cases that require reading and understanding text in images to answer questions. In practice, they cannot effectively handle the answer sequence derived from text tokens because the visual features are not text-oriented. To address the above issues, we propose a Text-Aware Dual Routing Network (TDR) which simultaneously handles the VQA cases with and without understanding text information in the input images. Specifically, we build a two-branch answer prediction network that contains a specific branch for each case and further develop a dual routing scheme to dynamically determine which branch should be chosen. In the branch that involves text understanding, we incorporate the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) features into the model to help understand the text in the images. Extensive experiments on the VQA v2.0 dataset demonstrate that our proposed TDR outperforms existing methods, especially on the ''number'' related VQA questions.

Knowledge-Driven Program Synthesis via Adaptive Replacement Mutation and Auto-constructed Subprogram Archives

We introduce Knowledge-Driven Program Synthesis (KDPS) as a variant of the program synthesis task that requires the agent to solve a sequence of program synthesis problems. In KDPS, the agent should use knowledge from the earlier problems to solve the later ones. We propose a novel method based on PushGP to solve the KDPS problem, which takes subprograms as knowledge. The proposed method extracts subprograms from the solution of previously solved problems by the Even Partitioning (EP) method and uses these subprograms to solve the upcoming programming task using Adaptive Replacement Mutation (ARM). We call this method PushGP+EP+ARM. With PushGP+EP+ARM, no human effort is required in the knowledge extraction and utilization processes. We compare the proposed method with PushGP, as well as a method using subprograms manually extracted by a human. Our PushGP+EP+ARM achieves better train error, success count, and faster convergence than PushGP. Additionally, we demonstrate the superiority of PushGP+EP+ARM when consecutively solving a sequence of six program synthesis problems.

A Chinese Multi-type Complex Questions Answering Dataset over Wikidata

Complex Knowledge Base Question Answering is a popular area of research in the past decade. Recent public datasets have led to encouraging results in this field, but are mostly limited to English and only involve a small number of question types and relations, hindering research in more realistic settings and in languages other than English. In addition, few state-of-the-art KBQA models are trained on Wikidata, one of the most popular real-world knowledge bases. We propose CLC-QuAD, the first large scale complex Chinese semantic parsing dataset over Wikidata to address these challenges. Together with the dataset, we present a text-to-SPARQL baseline model, which can effectively answer multi-type complex questions, such as factual questions, dual intent questions, boolean questions, and counting questions, with Wikidata as the background knowledge. We finally analyze the performance of SOTA KBQA models on this dataset and identify the challenges facing Chinese KBQA.

Machine Learning for Electronic Design Automation: A Survey

With the down-scaling of CMOS technology, the design complexity of very large-scale integrated (VLSI) is increasing. Although the application of machine learning (ML) techniques in electronic design automation (EDA) can trace its history back to the 90s, the recent breakthrough of ML and the increasing complexity of EDA tasks have aroused more interests in incorporating ML to solve EDA tasks. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of existing ML for EDA studies, organized following the EDA hierarchy.

Learning Deep Interleaved Networks with Asymmetric Co-Attention for Image Restoration

Recently, convolutional neural network (CNN) has demonstrated significant success for image restoration (IR) tasks (e.g., image super-resolution, image deblurring, rain streak removal, and dehazing). However, existing CNN based models are commonly implemented as a single-path stream to enrich feature representations from low-quality (LQ) input space for final predictions, which fail to fully incorporate preceding low-level contexts into later high-level features within networks, thereby producing inferior results. In this paper, we present a deep interleaved network (DIN) that learns how information at different states should be combined for high-quality (HQ) images reconstruction. The proposed DIN follows a multi-path and multi-branch pattern allowing multiple interconnected branches to interleave and fuse at different states. In this way, the shallow information can guide deep representative features prediction to enhance the feature expression ability. Furthermore, we propose asymmetric co-attention (AsyCA) which is attached at each interleaved node to model the feature dependencies. Such AsyCA can not only adaptively emphasize the informative features from different states, but also improves the discriminative ability of networks. Our presented DIN can be trained end-to-end and applied to various IR tasks. Comprehensive evaluations on public benchmarks and real-world datasets demonstrate that the proposed DIN perform favorably against the state-of-the-art methods quantitatively and qualitatively.

Robust Layout-aware IE for Visually Rich Documents with Pre-trained Language Models

Many business documents processed in modern NLP and IR pipelines are visually rich: in addition to text, their semantics can also be captured by visual traits such as layout, format, and fonts. We study the problem of information extraction from visually rich documents (VRDs) and present a model that combines the power of large pre-trained language models and graph neural networks to efficiently encode both textual and visual information in business documents. We further introduce new fine-tuning objectives to improve in-domain unsupervised fine-tuning to better utilize large amount of unlabeled in-domain data. We experiment on real world invoice and resume data sets and show that the proposed method outperforms strong text-based RoBERTa baselines by 6.3% absolute F1 on invoices and 4.7% absolute F1 on resumes. When evaluated in a few-shot setting, our method requires up to 30x less annotation data than the baseline to achieve the same level of performance at ~90% F1.

Deep Interleaved Network for Image Super-Resolution With Asymmetric Co-Attention

Recently, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based image super-resolution (SR) have shown significant success in the literature. However, these methods are implemented as single-path stream to enrich feature maps from the input for the final prediction, which fail to fully incorporate former low-level features into later high-level features. In this paper, to tackle this problem, we propose a deep interleaved network (DIN) to learn how information at different states should be combined for image SR where shallow information guides deep representative features prediction. Our DIN follows a multi-branch pattern allowing multiple interconnected branches to interleave and fuse at different states. Besides, the asymmetric co-attention (AsyCA) is proposed and attacked to the interleaved nodes to adaptively emphasize informative features from different states and improve the discriminative ability of networks. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our proposed DIN in comparison with the state-of-the-art SR methods.

Solving Portfolio Optimization Problems Using MOEA/D and Levy Flight

Portfolio optimization is a financial task which requires the allocation of capital on a set of financial assets to achieve a better trade-off between return and risk. To solve this problem, recent studies applied multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) for its natural bi-objective structure. This paper presents a method injecting a distribution-based mutation method named Lévy Flight into a decomposition based MOEA named MOEA/D. The proposed algorithm is compared with three MOEA/D-like algorithms, NSGA-II, and other distribution-based mutation methods on five portfolio optimization benchmarks sized from 31 to 225 in OR library without constraints, assessing with six metrics. Numerical results and statistical test indicate that this method can outperform comparison methods in most cases. We analyze how Levy Flight contributes to this improvement by promoting global search early in the optimization. We explain this improvement by considering the interaction between mutation method and the property of the problem.

Enriching Pre-trained Language Model with Entity Information for Relation Classification

Relation classification is an important NLP task to extract relations between entities. The state-of-the-art methods for relation classification are primarily based on Convolutional or Recurrent Neural Networks. Recently, the pre-trained BERT model achieves very successful results in many NLP classification / sequence labeling tasks. Relation classification differs from those tasks in that it relies on information of both the sentence and the two target entities. In this paper, we propose a model that both leverages the pre-trained BERT language model and incorporates information from the target entities to tackle the relation classification task. We locate the target entities and transfer the information through the pre-trained architecture and incorporate the corresponding encoding of the two entities. We achieve significant improvement over the state-of-the-art method on the SemEval-2010 task 8 relational dataset.

Multi-Instance Learning for End-to-End Knowledge Base Question Answering

End-to-end training has been a popular approach for knowledge base question answering (KBQA). However, real world applications often contain answers of varied quality for users' questions. It is not appropriate to treat all available answers of a user question equally. This paper proposes a novel approach based on multiple instance learning to address the problem of noisy answers by exploring consensus among answers to the same question in training end-to-end KBQA models. In particular, the QA pairs are organized into bags with dynamic instance selection and different options of instance weighting. Curriculum learning is utilized to select instance bags during training. On the public CQA dataset, the new method significantly improves both entity accuracy and the Rouge-L score over a state-of-the-art end-to-end KBQA baseline.

Jointly Embedding Relations and Mentions for Knowledge Population

This paper contributes a joint embedding model for predicting relations between a pair of entities in the scenario of relation inference. It differs from most stand-alone approaches which separately operate on either knowledge bases or free texts. The proposed model simultaneously learns low-dimensional vector representations for both triplets in knowledge repositories and the mentions of relations in free texts, so that we can leverage the evidence both resources to make more accurate predictions. We use NELL to evaluate the performance of our approach, compared with cutting-edge methods. Results of extensive experiments show that our model achieves significant improvement on relation extraction.
