Music- and Lyrics-driven Dance Synthesis

Lyrics often convey information about the songs that are beyond the auditory dimension, enriching the semantic meaning of movements and musical themes. Such insights are important in the dance choreography domain. However, most existing dance synthesis methods mainly focus on music-to-dance generation, without considering the semantic information. To complement it, we introduce JustLMD, a new multimodal dataset of 3D dance motion with music and lyrics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first dataset with triplet information including dance motion, music, and lyrics. Additionally, we showcase a cross-modal diffusion-based network designed to generate 3D dance motion conditioned on music and lyrics. The proposed JustLMD dataset encompasses 4.6 hours of 3D dance motion in 1867 sequences, accompanied by musical tracks and their corresponding English lyrics.

The threshold of semiconductor nanolasers

Nanolasers based on emerging dielectric cavities with deep sub-wavelength confinement of light offer a large light-matter coupling rate and a near-unity spontaneous emission factor, $β$. These features call for reconsidering the standard approach to identifying the lasing threshold. Here, we suggest a new threshold definition, taking into account the recycling process of photons when $β$ is large. This threshold with photon recycling reduces to the classical balance between gain and loss in the limit of macroscopic lasers, but qualitative as well as quantitative differences emerge as $β$ approaches unity. We analyze the evolution of the photon statistics with increasing current by utilizing a standard Langevin approach and a more fundamental stochastic simulation scheme. We show that the threshold with photon recycling consistently marks the onset of the change in the second-order intensity correlation, $g^{(2)}(0)$, toward coherent laser light, irrespective of the laser size and down to the case of a single emitter. In contrast, other threshold definitions may well predict lasing in light-emitting diodes. These results address the fundamental question of the transition to lasing all the way from the macro- to the nanoscale and provide a unified overview of the long-lasting debate on the lasing threshold.

Carrier diffusion in semiconductor nanoscale resonators

It is shown that semiconductor nanoscale resonators with extreme dielectric confinement accelerate the diffusion of electron-hole pairs excited by nonlinear absorption. These novel cavity designs may lead to optical switches with superior modulation speeds compared to conventional geometries. The response function of the effective carrier density is computed by an efficient eigenmode expansion technique. A few eigenmodes of the diffusion equation conveniently capture the long-timescale carrier decay rate, which is advantageous compared to time-domain simulations. Notably, the eigenmode approach elucidates the contribution to carrier diffusion of the in-plane and out-of-plane cavity geometry, which may guide future designs.

DEEPCHORUS: A Hybrid Model of Multi-scale Convolution and Self-attention for Chorus Detection

Chorus detection is a challenging problem in musical signal processing as the chorus often repeats more than once in popular songs, usually with rich instruments and complex rhythm forms. Most of the existing works focus on the receptiveness of chorus sections based on some explicit features such as loudness and occurrence frequency. These pre-assumptions for chorus limit the generalization capacity of these methods, causing misdetection on other repeated sections such as verse. To solve the problem, in this paper we propose an end-to-end chorus detection model DeepChorus, reducing the engineering effort and the need for prior knowledge. The proposed model includes two main structures: i) a Multi-Scale Network to derive preliminary representations of chorus segments, and ii) a Self-Attention Convolution Network to further process the features into probability curves representing chorus presence. To obtain the final results, we apply an adaptive threshold to binarize the original curve. The experimental results show that DeepChorus outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in most cases.

ExposureDiffusion: Learning to Expose for Low-light Image Enhancement

Previous raw image-based low-light image enhancement methods predominantly relied on feed-forward neural networks to learn deterministic mappings from low-light to normally-exposed images. However, they failed to capture critical distribution information, leading to visually undesirable results. This work addresses the issue by seamlessly integrating a diffusion model with a physics-based exposure model. Different from a vanilla diffusion model that has to perform Gaussian denoising, with the injected physics-based exposure model, our restoration process can directly start from a noisy image instead of pure noise. As such, our method obtains significantly improved performance and reduced inference time compared with vanilla diffusion models. To make full use of the advantages of different intermediate steps, we further propose an adaptive residual layer that effectively screens out the side-effect in the iterative refinement when the intermediate results have been already well-exposed. The proposed framework can work with both real-paired datasets, SOTA noise models, and different backbone networks. Note that, the proposed framework is compatible with real-paired datasets, real/synthetic noise models, and different backbone networks. We evaluate the proposed method on various public benchmarks, achieving promising results with consistent improvements using different exposure models and backbones. Besides, the proposed method achieves better generalization capacity for unseen amplifying ratios and better performance than a larger feedforward neural model when few parameters are adopted.

Modify Training Directions in Function Space to Reduce Generalization Error

We propose theoretical analyses of a modified natural gradient descent method in the neural network function space based on the eigendecompositions of neural tangent kernel and Fisher information matrix. We firstly present analytical expression for the function learned by this modified natural gradient under the assumptions of Gaussian distribution and infinite width limit. Thus, we explicitly derive the generalization error of the learned neural network function using theoretical methods from eigendecomposition and statistics theory. By decomposing of the total generalization error attributed to different eigenspace of the kernel in function space, we propose a criterion for balancing the errors stemming from training set and the distribution discrepancy between the training set and the true data. Through this approach, we establish that modifying the training direction of the neural network in function space leads to a reduction in the total generalization error. Furthermore, We demonstrate that this theoretical framework is capable to explain many existing results of generalization enhancing methods. These theoretical results are also illustrated by numerical examples on synthetic data.

Towards Integrated Traffic Control with Operating Decentralized Autonomous Organization

With a growing complexity of the intelligent traffic system (ITS), an integrated control of ITS that is capable of considering plentiful heterogeneous intelligent agents is desired. However, existing control methods based on the centralized or the decentralized scheme have not presented their competencies in considering the optimality and the scalability simultaneously. To address this issue, we propose an integrated control method based on the framework of Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO). The proposed method achieves a global consensus on energy consumption efficiency (ECE), meanwhile to optimize the local objectives of all involved intelligent agents, through a consensus and incentive mechanism. Furthermore, an operation algorithm is proposed regarding the issue of structural rigidity in DAO. Specifically, the proposed operation approach identifies critical agents to execute the smart contract in DAO, which ultimately extends the capability of DAO-based control. In addition, a numerical experiment is designed to examine the performance of the proposed method. The experiment results indicate that the controlled agents can achieve a consensus faster on the global objective with improved local objectives by the proposed method, compare to existing decentralized control methods. In general, the proposed method shows a great potential in developing an integrated control system in the ITS

Beyond Learned Metadata-based Raw Image Reconstruction

While raw images have distinct advantages over sRGB images, e.g., linearity and fine-grained quantization levels, they are not widely adopted by general users due to their substantial storage requirements. Very recent studies propose to compress raw images by designing sampling masks within the pixel space of the raw image. However, these approaches often leave space for pursuing more effective image representations and compact metadata. In this work, we propose a novel framework that learns a compact representation in the latent space, serving as metadata, in an end-to-end manner. Compared with lossy image compression, we analyze the intrinsic difference of the raw image reconstruction task caused by rich information from the sRGB image. Based on the analysis, a novel backbone design with asymmetric and hybrid spatial feature resolutions is proposed, which significantly improves the rate-distortion performance. Besides, we propose a novel design of the context model, which can better predict the order masks of encoding/decoding based on both the sRGB image and the masks of already processed features. Benefited from the better modeling of the correlation between order masks, the already processed information can be better utilized. Moreover, a novel sRGB-guided adaptive quantization precision strategy, which dynamically assigns varying levels of quantization precision to different regions, further enhances the representation ability of the model. Finally, based on the iterative properties of the proposed context model, we propose a novel strategy to achieve variable bit rates using a single model. This strategy allows for the continuous convergence of a wide range of bit rates. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better reconstruction quality with a smaller metadata size.

A real-time hole depth diagnostic based on coherent imaging with plasma amendment during femtosecondlaser hole-drilling

An in-process coherent imaging diagnostic has been developed to real-time measure the hole depth during air-film hole drilling by a femtosecond laser. A super-luminescent diode with a wavelength of 830~13 nm is chosen as the coherent light source which determines a depth resolution of 12 μm. The drilled hole is coupled as a part of the sample arm and the depth variation can be extracted from the length variation of the optical path. Interference is realized in the detection part and a code has been written to discriminate the interference fringes. Density of plasma in the hole is diagnosed to evaluate its amendment to the optical path length and the depth measurement error induced by plasma is non-ignorable when drilling deep holes.

Controllable Lyrics-to-Melody Generation

Lyrics-to-melody generation is an interesting and challenging topic in AI music research field. Due to the difficulty of learning the correlations between lyrics and melody, previous methods suffer from low generation quality and lack of controllability. Controllability of generative models enables human interaction with models to generate desired contents, which is especially important in music generation tasks towards human-centered AI that can facilitate musicians in creative activities. To address these issues, we propose a controllable lyrics-to-melody generation network, ConL2M, which is able to generate realistic melodies from lyrics in user-desired musical style. Our work contains three main novelties: 1) To model the dependencies of music attributes cross multiple sequences, inter-branch memory fusion (Memofu) is proposed to enable information flow between multi-branch stacked LSTM architecture; 2) Reference style embedding (RSE) is proposed to improve the quality of generation as well as control the musical style of generated melodies; 3) Sequence-level statistical loss (SeqLoss) is proposed to help the model learn sequence-level features of melodies given lyrics. Verified by evaluation metrics for music quality and controllability, initial study of controllable lyrics-to-melody generation shows better generation quality and the feasibility of interacting with users to generate the melodies in desired musical styles when given lyrics.

Pursuing Equilibrium of Medical Resources via Data Empowerment in Parallel Healthcare System

The imbalance between the supply and demand of healthcare resources is a global challenge, which is particularly severe in developing countries. Governments and academic communities have made various efforts to increase healthcare supply and improve resource allocation. However, these efforts often remain passive and inflexible. Alongside these issues, the emergence of the parallel healthcare system has the potential to solve these problems by unlocking the data value. The parallel healthcare system comprises Medicine-Oriented Operating Systems (MOOS), Medicine-Oriented Scenario Engineering (MOSE), and Medicine-Oriented Large Models (MOLMs), which could collect, circulate, and empower data. In this paper, we propose that achieving equilibrium in medical resource allocation is possible through parallel healthcare systems via data empowerment. The supply-demand relationship can be balanced in parallel healthcare systems by (1) increasing the supply provided by digital and robotic doctors in MOOS, (2) identifying individual and potential demands by proactive diagnosis and treatment in MOSE, and (3) improving supply-demand matching using large models in MOLMs. To illustrate the effectiveness of this approach, we present a case study optimizing resource allocation from the perspective of facility accessibility. Results demonstrate that the parallel healthcare system could result in up to 300% improvement in accessibility.

SWDPM: A Social Welfare-Optimized Data Pricing Mechanism

Data trading has been hindered by privacy concerns associated with user-owned data and the infinite reproducibility of data, making it challenging for data owners to retain exclusive rights over their data once it has been disclosed. Traditional data pricing models relied on uniform pricing or subscription-based models. However, with the development of Privacy-Preserving Computing techniques, the market can now protect the privacy and complete transactions using progressively disclosed information, which creates a technical foundation for generating greater social welfare through data usage. In this study, we propose a novel approach to modeling multi-round data trading with progressively disclosed information using a matchmaking-based Markov Decision Process (MDP) and introduce a Social Welfare-optimized Data Pricing Mechanism (SWDPM) to find optimal pricing strategies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to model multi-round data trading with progressively disclosed information. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the SWDPM can increase social welfare 3 times by up to 54\% in trading feasibility, 43\% in trading efficiency, and 25\% in trading fairness by encouraging better matching of demand and price negotiation among traders.

MIPI 2023 Challenge on RGB+ToF Depth Completion: Methods and Results

Depth completion from RGB images and sparse Time-of-Flight (ToF) measurements is an important problem in computer vision and robotics. While traditional methods for depth completion have relied on stereo vision or structured light techniques, recent advances in deep learning have enabled more accurate and efficient completion of depth maps from RGB images and sparse ToF measurements. To evaluate the performance of different depth completion methods, we organized an RGB+sparse ToF depth completion competition. The competition aimed to encourage research in this area by providing a standardized dataset and evaluation metrics to compare the accuracy of different approaches. In this report, we present the results of the competition and analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the top-performing methods. We also discuss the implications of our findings for future research in RGB+sparse ToF depth completion. We hope that this competition and report will help to advance the state-of-the-art in this important area of research. Spatial Wave Pattern in Locally Coupled Kuramoto Model

The Kuramoto model is a commonly used mathematical model for studying synchronized oscillations in biological systems, with its temporal synchronization properties well studied. However, the properties of spatial waves have received less attention. This paper investigates the spatial waves formed by locally coupled oscillators arranged in an $n\times n$ grid. Numerical simulations show that directional waves can form when the system exhibits heterogeneity, while spiral waves can arise in a homogeneous system. Interestingly, both wave patterns remain stable under minor noise disturbances. To explain the properties of the spatial wave pattern, starting from the simplest case of a $2\times 2$ grid, we analytically calculate the phase differences between oscillators to discuss the formation of wave patterns in the system. We then apply this method to compute the stable and saddle points and corresponding wave patterns of some $n\times n$ grid cases and discuss their stability. Furthermore, linear approximation reveals that the wave pattern under noise is the noiseless wave pattern plus its first-order approximation, indicating that the wave pattern remains stable within a certain range of noise. These results suggest that the necessary condition for directional wave propagation in biological systems is the presence of heterogeneity that far exceeds noise. In contrast, the disappearance of heterogeneity may induce spiral waves, often corresponding to disease states.

Robust Andrew's sine estimate adaptive filtering

The Andrew's sine function is a robust estimator, which has been used in outlier rejection and robust statistics. However, the performance of such estimator does not receive attention in the field of adaptive filtering techniques. Two Andrew's sine estimator (ASE)-based robust adaptive filtering algorithms are proposed in this brief. Specifically, to achieve improved performance and reduced computational complexity, the iterative Wiener filter (IWF) is an attractive choice. A novel IWF based on ASE (IWF-ASE) is proposed for impulsive noises. To further reduce the computational complexity, the leading dichotomous coordinate descent (DCD) algorithm is combined with the ASE, developing DCD-ASE algorithm. Simulations on system identification demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can achieve smaller misalignment as compared to the conventional IWF, recursive maximum correntropy criterion (RMCC), and DCD-RMCC algorithms in impulsive noise. Furthermore, the proposed algorithms exhibit improved performance in partial discharge (PD) denoising.

Emotionally Enhanced Talking Face Generation

Several works have developed end-to-end pipelines for generating lip-synced talking faces with various real-world applications, such as teaching and language translation in videos. However, these prior works fail to create realistic-looking videos since they focus little on people's expressions and emotions. Moreover, these methods' effectiveness largely depends on the faces in the training dataset, which means they may not perform well on unseen faces. To mitigate this, we build a talking face generation framework conditioned on a categorical emotion to generate videos with appropriate expressions, making them more realistic and convincing. With a broad range of six emotions, i.e., \emph{happiness}, \emph{sadness}, \emph{fear}, \emph{anger}, \emph{disgust}, and \emph{neutral}, we show that our model can adapt to arbitrary identities, emotions, and languages. Our proposed framework is equipped with a user-friendly web interface with a real-time experience for talking face generation with emotions. We also conduct a user study for subjective evaluation of our interface's usability, design, and functionality. Project page: https://midas.iiitd.edu.in/emo/

Frame-Level Multi-Label Playing Technique Detection Using Multi-Scale Network and Self-Attention Mechanism

Instrument playing technique (IPT) is a key element of musical presentation. However, most of the existing works for IPT detection only concern monophonic music signals, yet little has been done to detect IPTs in polyphonic instrumental solo pieces with overlapping IPTs or mixed IPTs. In this paper, we formulate it as a frame-level multi-label classification problem and apply it to Guzheng, a Chinese plucked string instrument. We create a new dataset, Guzheng\_Tech99, containing Guzheng recordings and onset, offset, pitch, IPT annotations of each note. Because different IPTs vary a lot in their lengths, we propose a new method to solve this problem using multi-scale network and self-attention. The multi-scale network extracts features from different scales, and the self-attention mechanism applied to the feature maps at the coarsest scale further enhances the long-range feature extraction. Our approach outperforms existing works by a large margin, indicating its effectiveness in IPT detection.

High-Dimensional Dynamic Pricing under Non-Stationarity: Learning and Earning with Change-Point Detection

We consider a high-dimensional dynamic pricing problem under non-stationarity, where a firm sells products to $T$ sequentially arriving consumers that behave according to an unknown demand model with potential changes at unknown times. The demand model is assumed to be a high-dimensional generalized linear model (GLM), allowing for a feature vector in $\mathbb R^d$ that encodes products and consumer information. To achieve optimal revenue (i.e., least regret), the firm needs to learn and exploit the unknown GLMs while monitoring for potential change-points. To tackle such a problem, we first design a novel penalized likelihood-based online change-point detection algorithm for high-dimensional GLMs, which is the first algorithm in the change-point literature that achieves optimal minimax localization error rate for high-dimensional GLMs. A change-point detection assisted dynamic pricing (CPDP) policy is further proposed and achieves a near-optimal regret of order $O(s\sqrt{Υ_T T}\log(Td))$, where $s$ is the sparsity level and $Υ_T$ is the number of change-points. This regret is accompanied with a minimax lower bound, demonstrating the optimality of CPDP (up to logarithmic factors). In particular, the optimality with respect to $Υ_T$ is seen for the first time in the dynamic pricing literature, and is achieved via a novel accelerated exploration mechanism. Extensive simulation experiments and a real data application on online lending illustrate the efficiency of the proposed policy and the importance and practical value of handling non-stationarity in dynamic pricing.
