Cosmological Standard Timers from Unstable Primordial Relics

In this article we study a hypothetical possibility of tracking the evolution of our Universe by introducing a series of the so-called standard timers. Any unstable primordial relics generated in the very early Universe may serve as the standard timers, as they can evolve through the whole cosmological background until their end while their certain time-varying properties could be a possible timer by recording the amount of physical time elapsed since the very early moments. Accordingly, if one could observe these quantities at different redshifts, then a redshift-time relation of the cosmic history can be attained. To illustrate such a hypothetical possibility, we consider the primordial black hole bubbles as a concrete example and analyze the mass function inside a redshifted bubble by investigating the inverse problem of Hawking radiation. To complete the analyses theoretically, the mass distribution can serve as a calibration of the standard timers.

R2Det: Redemption from Range-view for Accurate 3D Object Detection

LiDAR-based 3D object detection is of paramount importance for autonomous driving. Recent trends show a remarkable improvement for bird's-eye-view (BEV) based and point-based methods as they demonstrate superior performance compared to range-view counterparts. This paper presents an insight that leverages range-view representation to enhance 3D points for accurate 3D object detection. Specifically, we introduce a Redemption from Range-view Module (R2M), a plug-and-play approach for 3D surface texture enhancement from the 2D range view to the 3D point view. R2M comprises BasicBlock for 2D feature extraction, Hierarchical-dilated (HD) Meta Kernel for expanding the 3D receptive field, and Feature Points Redemption (FPR) for recovering 3D surface texture information. R2M can be seamlessly integrated into state-of-the-art LiDAR-based 3D object detectors as preprocessing and achieve appealing improvement, e.g., 1.39%, 1.67%, and 1.97% mAP improvement on easy, moderate, and hard difficulty level of KITTI val set, respectively. Based on R2M, we further propose R2Detector (R2Det) with the Synchronous-Grid RoI Pooling for accurate box refinement. R2Det outperforms existing range-view-based methods by a significant margin on both the KITTI benchmark and the Waymo Open Dataset. Codes will be made publicly available.

Enhancing NeRF akin to Enhancing LLMs: Generalizable NeRF Transformer with Mixture-of-View-Experts

Cross-scene generalizable NeRF models, which can directly synthesize novel views of unseen scenes, have become a new spotlight of the NeRF field. Several existing attempts rely on increasingly end-to-end "neuralized" architectures, i.e., replacing scene representation and/or rendering modules with performant neural networks such as transformers, and turning novel view synthesis into a feed-forward inference pipeline. While those feedforward "neuralized" architectures still do not fit diverse scenes well out of the box, we propose to bridge them with the powerful Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) idea from large language models (LLMs), which has demonstrated superior generalization ability by balancing between larger overall model capacity and flexible per-instance specialization. Starting from a recent generalizable NeRF architecture called GNT, we first demonstrate that MoE can be neatly plugged in to enhance the model. We further customize a shared permanent expert and a geometry-aware consistency loss to enforce cross-scene consistency and spatial smoothness respectively, which are essential for generalizable view synthesis. Our proposed model, dubbed GNT with Mixture-of-View-Experts (GNT-MOVE), has experimentally shown state-of-the-art results when transferring to unseen scenes, indicating remarkably better cross-scene generalization in both zero-shot and few-shot settings. Our codes are available at https://github.com/VITA-Group/GNT-MOVE.

Label-free timing analysis of SiPM-based modularized detectors with physics-constrained deep learning

Pulse timing is an important topic in nuclear instrumentation, with far-reaching applications from high energy physics to radiation imaging. While high-speed analog-to-digital converters become more and more developed and accessible, their potential uses and merits in nuclear detector signal processing are still uncertain, partially due to associated timing algorithms which are not fully understood and utilized. In this paper, we propose a novel method based on deep learning for timing analysis of modularized detectors without explicit needs of labelling event data. By taking advantage of the intrinsic time correlations, a label-free loss function with a specially designed regularizer is formed to supervise the training of neural networks towards a meaningful and accurate mapping function. We mathematically demonstrate the existence of the optimal function desired by the method, and give a systematic algorithm for training and calibration of the model. The proposed method is validated on two experimental datasets based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) as main transducers. In the toy experiment, the neural network model achieves the single-channel time resolution of 8.8 ps and exhibits robustness against concept drift in the dataset. In the electromagnetic calorimeter experiment, several neural network models (FC, CNN and LSTM) are tested to show their conformance to the underlying physical constraint and to judge their performance against traditional methods. In total, the proposed method works well in either ideal or noisy experimental condition and recovers the time information from waveform samples successfully and precisely.

Data-driven MHD simulation of a sunspot rotating active region leading to solar eruption

Solar eruptions are the leading driver of space weather, and it is vital for space weather forecast to understand in what conditions the solar eruptions can be produced and how they are initiated. The rotation of sunspots around their umbral center has long been considered as an important condition in causing solar eruptions. To unveil the underlying mechanisms, here we carried out a data-driven magnetohydrodynamics simulation for the event of a large sunspot with rotation for days in solar active region NOAA 12158 leading to a major eruption. The photospheric velocity as recovered from the time sequence of vector magnetograms are inputted directly at the bottom boundary of the numerical model as the driving flow. Our simulation successfully follows the long-term quasi-static evolution of the active region until the fast eruption, with magnetic field structure consistent with the observed coronal emission and onset time of simulated eruption matches rather well with the observations. Analysis of the process suggests that through the successive rotation of the sunspot the coronal magnetic field is sheared with a vertical current sheet created progressively, and once fast reconnection sets in at the current sheet, the eruption is instantly triggered, with a highly twisted flux rope originating from the eruption. This data-driven simulation stresses magnetic reconnection as the key mechanism in sunspot rotation leading to eruption.

Scaling Data Generation in Vision-and-Language Navigation

Recent research in language-guided visual navigation has demonstrated a significant demand for the diversity of traversable environments and the quantity of supervision for training generalizable agents. To tackle the common data scarcity issue in existing vision-and-language navigation datasets, we propose an effective paradigm for generating large-scale data for learning, which applies 1200+ photo-realistic environments from HM3D and Gibson datasets and synthesizes 4.9 million instruction trajectory pairs using fully-accessible resources on the web. Importantly, we investigate the influence of each component in this paradigm on the agent's performance and study how to adequately apply the augmented data to pre-train and fine-tune an agent. Thanks to our large-scale dataset, the performance of an existing agent can be pushed up (+11% absolute with regard to previous SoTA) to a significantly new best of 80% single-run success rate on the R2R test split by simple imitation learning. The long-lasting generalization gap between navigating in seen and unseen environments is also reduced to less than 1% (versus 8% in the previous best method). Moreover, our paradigm also facilitates different models to achieve new state-of-the-art navigation results on CVDN, REVERIE, and R2R in continuous environments.

A fundamental mechanism of solar eruption initiation in multipolar magnetic field

Recently we established a fundamental mechanism of solar eruption initiation, in which an eruption can be initiated from a bipolar field through magnetic reconnection in the current sheet (CS) that is formed slowly in the core field as driven by photospheric shearing motion. Here using a series of fully 3D MHD simulations with a range of different photospheric magnetic flux distributions, we extended this fundamental mechanism to the quadrupolar magnetic field containing a null point above the core field, which is the basic configuration of the classical breakout model. As is commonly believed, in such multipolar configuration, the reconnection triggered in the CS originated at the null point (namely, the breakout reconnection) plays the key role in eruption initiation by establishing a positive feedback-loop between the breakout reconnection and the expansion of the core field. However, our simulation showed that the key of eruption initiation in such multipolar configuration remains to be the slow formation of the CS in the sheared core rather than the onset of fast breakout reconnection. The breakout reconnection only helps the formation of the core CS by letting the core field expand faster, but the eruption cannot occur when the bottom surface driving is stopped well before the core CS is formed, even though the fast reconnection has already been triggered in the breakout CS. This study clarified the role of breakout reconnection and confirmed formation of the core CS as the key to the eruption initiation in a multipolar magnetic field.

Deep Semantic Model Fusion for Ancient Agricultural Terrace Detection

Discovering ancient agricultural terraces in desert regions is important for the monitoring of long-term climate changes on the Earth's surface. However, traditional ground surveys are both costly and limited in scale. With the increasing accessibility of aerial and satellite data, machine learning techniques bear large potential for the automatic detection and recognition of archaeological landscapes. In this paper, we propose a deep semantic model fusion method for ancient agricultural terrace detection. The input data includes aerial images and LiDAR generated terrain features in the Negev desert. Two deep semantic segmentation models, namely DeepLabv3+ and UNet, with EfficientNet backbone, are trained and fused to provide segmentation maps of ancient terraces and walls. The proposed method won the first prize in the International AI Archaeology Challenge. Codes are available at https://github.com/wangyi111/international-archaeology-ai-challenge.

A model of failed solar eruption initiated and destructed by magnetic reconnection

Solar eruptions are explosive disruption of coronal magnetic fields, and often launch coronal mass ejections into the interplanetary space. Intriguingly, many solar eruptions fail to escape from the Sun, and the prevailing theory for such failed eruption is based on ideal MHD instabilities of magnetic flux rope (MFR); that is, a MFR runs into kink instability and erupts but cannot reach the height for torus instability. Here, based on numerical MHD simulation, we present a new model of failed eruption in which magnetic reconnection plays a leading role in the initiation and failure of the eruption. Initially, a core bipolar potential field is embedded in a background bipolar field, and by applying shearing and converging motions to the core field, a current sheet is formed within the core field. Then, tether-cutting reconnection is triggered at the current sheet, first slow for a while and becoming fast, driving an erupting MFR. Eventually, the rise of MFR is halted by the downward magnetic tension force of the overlying field, although the MFR apex has well exceeded the critical height of torus instability. More importantly, during the rise of the MFR, it experiences a significant rotation around the vertical axis (with a direction contrary to that predicted by kink instability), rendering the field direction at the rope apex almost inverse to the overlying field. As a result, a strong current sheet is formed between the MFR and the overlying flux, and reconnection occurring in this current sheet ruins completely the MFR.

PersonaGen: A Tool for Generating Personas from User Feedback

Personas are crucial in software development processes, particularly in agile settings. However, no effective tools are available for generating personas from user feedback in agile software development processes. To fill this gap, we propose a novel tool that uses the GPT-4 model and knowledge graph to generate persona templates from well-processed user feedback, facilitating requirement analysis in agile software development processes. We developed a tool called PersonaGen. We evaluated PersonaGen using qualitative feedback from a small-scale user study involving student software projects. The results were mixed, highlighting challenges in persona-based educational practice and addressing non-functional requirements.

Recommended Implementation of Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping for Clinical Research in The Brain: A Consensus of the ISMRM Electro-Magnetic Tissue Properties Study Group

This article provides recommendations for implementing quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) for clinical brain research. It is a consensus of the ISMRM Electro-Magnetic Tissue Properties Study Group. While QSM technical development continues to advance rapidly, the current QSM methods have been demonstrated to be repeatable and reproducible for generating quantitative tissue magnetic susceptibility maps in the brain. However, the many QSM approaches available give rise to the need in the neuroimaging community for guidelines on implementation. This article describes relevant considerations and provides specific implementation recommendations for all steps in QSM data acquisition, processing, analysis, and presentation in scientific publications. We recommend that data be acquired using a monopolar 3D multi-echo GRE sequence, that phase images be saved and exported in DICOM format and unwrapped using an exact unwrapping approach. Multi-echo images should be combined before background removal, and a brain mask created using a brain extraction tool with the incorporation of phase-quality-based masking. Background fields should be removed within the brain mask using a technique based on SHARP or PDF, and the optimization approach to dipole inversion should be employed with a sparsity-based regularization. Susceptibility values should be measured relative to a specified reference, including the common reference region of whole brain as a region of interest in the analysis, and QSM results should be reported with - as a minimum - the acquisition and processing specifications listed in the last section of the article. These recommendations should facilitate clinical QSM research and lead to increased harmonization in data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.

On the Decoherence of Primordial Gravitons

It is well-known that the primordial scalar curvature and tensor perturbations, $ζ$ and $γ_{ij}$, are conserved on super-horizon scales in minimal inflation models. However, their wave functional has a rapidly oscillating phase which is slow-roll unsuppressed, as can be seen either from boundary (total-derivative) terms of cosmological perturbations, or the WKB approximation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. Such an oscillatory phase involves gravitational non-linearity between scalar and tensor perturbations. By tracing out unobserved modes, the oscillatory phase causes faster decoherence of primordial gravitons compared to those by bulk interactions. Our results put a stronger lower bound of decoherence effect to the recent proposals probing squeezed primordial gravitons.

SimPLe: Similarity-Aware Propagation Learning for Weakly-Supervised Breast Cancer Segmentation in DCE-MRI

Breast dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) plays an important role in the screening and prognosis assessment of high-risk breast cancer. The segmentation of cancerous regions is essential useful for the subsequent analysis of breast MRI. To alleviate the annotation effort to train the segmentation networks, we propose a weakly-supervised strategy using extreme points as annotations for breast cancer segmentation. Without using any bells and whistles, our strategy focuses on fully exploiting the learning capability of the routine training procedure, i.e., the train - fine-tune - retrain process. The network first utilizes the pseudo-masks generated using the extreme points to train itself, by minimizing a contrastive loss, which encourages the network to learn more representative features for cancerous voxels. Then the trained network fine-tunes itself by using a similarity-aware propagation learning (SimPLe) strategy, which leverages feature similarity between unlabeled and positive voxels to propagate labels. Finally the network retrains itself by employing the pseudo-masks generated using previous fine-tuned network. The proposed method is evaluated on our collected DCE-MRI dataset containing 206 patients with biopsy-proven breast cancers. Experimental results demonstrate our method effectively fine-tunes the network by using the SimPLe strategy, and achieves a mean Dice value of 81%.

Hyper-parameter Adaptation of Conformer ASR Systems for Elderly and Dysarthric Speech Recognition

Automatic recognition of disordered and elderly speech remains highly challenging tasks to date due to data scarcity. Parameter fine-tuning is often used to exploit the large quantities of non-aged and healthy speech pre-trained models, while neural architecture hyper-parameters are set using expert knowledge and remain unchanged. This paper investigates hyper-parameter adaptation for Conformer ASR systems that are pre-trained on the Librispeech corpus before being domain adapted to the DementiaBank elderly and UASpeech dysarthric speech datasets. Experimental results suggest that hyper-parameter adaptation produced word error rate (WER) reductions of 0.45% and 0.67% over parameter-only fine-tuning on DBank and UASpeech tasks respectively. An intuitive correlation is found between the performance improvements by hyper-parameter domain adaptation and the relative utterance length ratio between the source and target domain data.

Exploring Self-supervised Pre-trained ASR Models For Dysarthric and Elderly Speech Recognition

Automatic recognition of disordered and elderly speech remains a highly challenging task to date due to the difficulty in collecting such data in large quantities. This paper explores a series of approaches to integrate domain adapted SSL pre-trained models into TDNN and Conformer ASR systems for dysarthric and elderly speech recognition: a) input feature fusion between standard acoustic frontends and domain adapted wav2vec2.0 speech representations; b) frame-level joint decoding of TDNN systems separately trained using standard acoustic features alone and with additional wav2vec2.0 features; and c) multi-pass decoding involving the TDNN/Conformer system outputs to be rescored using domain adapted wav2vec2.0 models. In addition, domain adapted wav2vec2.0 representations are utilized in acoustic-to-articulatory (A2A) inversion to construct multi-modal dysarthric and elderly speech recognition systems. Experiments conducted on the UASpeech dysarthric and DementiaBank Pitt elderly speech corpora suggest TDNN and Conformer ASR systems integrated domain adapted wav2vec2.0 models consistently outperform the standalone wav2vec2.0 models by statistically significant WER reductions of 8.22% and 3.43% absolute (26.71% and 15.88% relative) on the two tasks respectively. The lowest published WERs of 22.56% (52.53% on very low intelligibility, 39.09% on unseen words) and 18.17% are obtained on the UASpeech test set of 16 dysarthric speakers, and the DementiaBank Pitt test set respectively.

Semi-Supervised Learning for hyperspectral images by non parametrically predicting view assignment

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification is gaining a lot of momentum in present time because of high inherent spectral information within the images. However, these images suffer from the problem of curse of dimensionality and usually require a large number samples for tasks such as classification, especially in supervised setting. Recently, to effectively train the deep learning models with minimal labelled samples, the unlabeled samples are also being leveraged in self-supervised and semi-supervised setting. In this work, we leverage the idea of semi-supervised learning to assist the discriminative self-supervised pretraining of the models. The proposed method takes different augmented views of the unlabeled samples as input and assigns them the same pseudo-label corresponding to the labelled sample from the downstream task. We train our model on two HSI datasets, namely Houston dataset (from data fusion contest, 2013) and Pavia university dataset, and show that the proposed approach performs better than self-supervised approach and supervised training.

Inconsistency Ranking-based Noisy Label Detection for High-quality Data

The success of deep learning requires high-quality annotated and massive data. However, the size and the quality of a dataset are usually a trade-off in practice, as data collection and cleaning are expensive and time-consuming. In real-world applications, especially those using crowdsourcing datasets, it is important to exclude noisy labels. To address this, this paper proposes an automatic noisy label detection (NLD) technique with inconsistency ranking for high-quality data. We apply this technique to the automatic speaker verification (ASV) task as a proof of concept. We investigate both inter-class and intra-class inconsistency ranking and compare several metric learning loss functions under different noise settings. Experimental results confirm that the proposed solution could increase both the efficient and effective cleaning of large-scale speaker recognition datasets.
