Video sentence grounding with temporally global textual knowledge

Temporal sentence grounding involves the retrieval of a video moment with a natural language query. Many existing works directly incorporate the given video and temporally localized query for temporal grounding, overlooking the inherent domain gap between different modalities. In this paper, we utilize pseudo-query features containing extensive temporally global textual knowledge sourced from the same video-query pair, to enhance the bridging of domain gaps and attain a heightened level of similarity between multi-modal features. Specifically, we propose a Pseudo-query Intermediary Network (PIN) to achieve an improved alignment of visual and comprehensive pseudo-query features within the feature space through contrastive learning. Subsequently, we utilize learnable prompts to encapsulate the knowledge of pseudo-queries, propagating them into the textual encoder and multi-modal fusion module, further enhancing the feature alignment between visual and language for better temporal grounding. Extensive experiments conducted on the Charades-STA and ActivityNet-Captions datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

The largest Laplacian eigenvalue and the balancedness of simplicial complexes

Let $K$ be a simplical complex, and let $\mathcal{L}_i^{up}(K), \mathcal{Q}_i^{up}(K)$ be the $i$-th up Laplacian and signless Laplacian of $K$, respectively. In this paper we proved that the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L}_i^{up}(K)$ is not greater than the largest eigenvalue of $\mathcal{Q}_i^{up}(K)$; furthermore, if $K$ is $(i+1)$-path connected, then the equality holds if and only if the $i$-th incidence signed graph $B_i(K)$ of $K$ is balanced. As an application we provided an upper bound for the largest eigenvalue of the $i$-th up Laplacian of $K$, which improves the bound given by Horak and Jost and generalizes the result of Anderson and Morley on graphs. We characterized the balancedness of simplicial complexes under operations such as wedge sum, join, Cartesian product and duplication of motifs. For each $i \ge 0$, by using wedge sum or duplication of motifs, we can construct an infinitely many $(i+1)$-path connected simplicial complexes $K$ with $B_i(K)$ being balanced.

One for All: Toward Unified Foundation Models for Earth Vision

Foundation models characterized by extensive parameters and trained on large-scale datasets have demonstrated remarkable efficacy across various downstream tasks for remote sensing data. Current remote sensing foundation models typically specialize in a single modality or a specific spatial resolution range, limiting their versatility for downstream datasets. While there have been attempts to develop multi-modal remote sensing foundation models, they typically employ separate vision encoders for each modality or spatial resolution, necessitating a switch in backbones contingent upon the input data. To address this issue, we introduce a simple yet effective method, termed OFA-Net (One-For-All Network): employing a single, shared Transformer backbone for multiple data modalities with different spatial resolutions. Using the masked image modeling mechanism, we pre-train a single Transformer backbone on a curated multi-modal dataset with this simple design. Then the backbone model can be used in different downstream tasks, thus forging a path towards a unified foundation backbone model in Earth vision. The proposed method is evaluated on 12 distinct downstream tasks and demonstrates promising performance.

Deep learning improved autofocus for motion artifact reduction and its application in quantitative susceptibility mapping

Purpose: To develop a pipeline for motion artifact correction in mGRE and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). Methods: Deep learning is integrated with autofocus to improve motion artifact suppression, which is applied QSM of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). The estimation of affine motion parameters in the autofocus method depends on signal-to-noise ratio and lacks accuracy when data sampling occurs outside the k-space center. A deep learning strategy is employed to remove the residual motion artifacts in autofocus. Results: Results obtained in simulated brain data (n =15) with reference truth show that the proposed autofocus deep learning method significantly improves the image quality of mGRE and QSM (p = 0.001 for SSIM, p < 0.0001 for PSNR and RMSE). Results from 10 PD patients with real motion artifacts in QSM have also been corrected using the proposed method and sent to an experienced radiologist for image quality evaluation, and the average image quality score has increased (p=0.0039). Conclusions: The proposed method enables substantial suppression of motion artifacts in mGRE and QSM.

MVBench: A Comprehensive Multi-modal Video Understanding Benchmark

With the rapid development of Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs), a number of diagnostic benchmarks have recently emerged to evaluate the comprehension capabilities of these models. However, most benchmarks predominantly assess spatial understanding in the static image tasks, while overlooking temporal understanding in the dynamic video tasks. To alleviate this issue, we introduce a comprehensive Multi-modal Video understanding Benchmark, namely MVBench, which covers 20 challenging video tasks that cannot be effectively solved with a single frame. Specifically, we first introduce a novel static-to-dynamic method to define these temporal-related tasks. By transforming various static tasks into dynamic ones, we enable the systematic generation of video tasks that require a broad spectrum of temporal skills, ranging from perception to cognition. Then, guided by the task definition, we automatically convert public video annotations into multiple-choice QA to evaluate each task. On one hand, such a distinct paradigm allows us to build MVBench efficiently, without much manual intervention. On the other hand, it guarantees evaluation fairness with ground-truth video annotations, avoiding the biased scoring of LLMs. Moreover, we further develop a robust video MLLM baseline, i.e., VideoChat2, by progressive multi-modal training with diverse instruction-tuning data. The extensive results on our MVBench reveal that, the existing MLLMs are far from satisfactory in temporal understanding, while our VideoChat2 largely surpasses these leading models by over 15% on MVBench. Generic behavior of differentially positive systems on a globally orderable Riemannian manifold

Differentially positive systems are the nonlinear systems whose linearization along trajectories preserves a cone field on a smooth Riemannian manifold. One of the embryonic forms for cone fields in reality is originated from the general relativity. By utilizing the Perron-Frobenius vector fields and the $Γ$-invariance of cone fields, we show that generic (i.e.,``almost all" in the topological sense) orbits are convergent to certain single equilibrium. This solved a reduced version of Forni-Sepulchre's conjecture in 2016 for globally orderable manifolds.

Contextual Embedding Learning to Enhance 2D Networks for Volumetric Image Segmentation

The segmentation of organs in volumetric medical images plays an important role in computer-aided diagnosis and treatment/surgery planning. Conventional 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can hardly exploit the spatial correlation of volumetric data. Current 3D CNNs have the advantage to extract more powerful volumetric representations but they usually suffer from occupying excessive memory and computation nevertheless. In this study we aim to enhance the 2D networks with contextual information for better volumetric image segmentation. Accordingly, we propose a contextual embedding learning approach to facilitate 2D CNNs capturing spatial information properly. Our approach leverages the learned embedding and the slice-wisely neighboring matching as a soft cue to guide the network. In such a way, the contextual information can be transferred slice-by-slice thus boosting the volumetric representation of the network. Experiments on challenging prostate MRI dataset (PROMISE12) and abdominal CT dataset (CHAOS) show that our contextual embedding learning can effectively leverage the inter-slice context and improve segmentation performance. The proposed approach is a plug-and-play, and memory-efficient solution to enhance the 2D networks for volumetric segmentation. Exploring Kinetic Curves Features for the Classification of Benign and Malignant Breast Lesions in DCE-MRI

Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor among women and the second cause of cancer-related death. Early diagnosis in clinical practice is crucial for timely treatment and prognosis. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has revealed great usability in the preoperative diagnosis and assessing therapy effects thanks to its capability to reflect the morphology and dynamic characteristics of breast lesions. However, most existing computer-assisted diagnosis algorithms only consider conventional radiomic features when classifying benign and malignant lesions in DCE-MRI. In this study, we propose to fully leverage the dynamic characteristics from the kinetic curves as well as the radiomic features to boost the classification accuracy of benign and malignant breast lesions. The proposed method is a fully automated solution by directly analyzing the 3D features from the DCE-MRI. The proposed method is evaluated on an in-house dataset including 200 DCE-MRI scans with 298 breast tumors (172 benign and 126 malignant tumors), achieving favorable classification accuracy with an area under curve (AUC) of 0.94. By simultaneously considering the dynamic and radiomic features, it is beneficial to effectively distinguish between benign and malignant breast lesions. The algorithm is publicly available at https://github.com/ryandok/JPA.

Towards Cross-Scale Attention and Surface Supervision for Fractured Bone Segmentation in CT

Bone segmentation is an essential step for the preoperative planning of fracture trauma surgery. The automated segmentation of fractured bone from computed tomography (CT) scans remains challenging, due to the large differences of fractures in position and morphology, and also the inherent anatomical characteristics of different bone structures. To alleviate these issues, we propose a cross-scale attention mechanism as well as a surface supervision strategy for fractured bone segmentation in CT. Specifically, a cross-scale attention mechanism is introduced to effectively aggregate the features among different scales to provide more powerful fracture representation. Moreover, a surface supervision strategy is employed, which explicitly constrains the network to pay more attention to the bone boundary. The efficacy of the proposed method is evaluated on a public dataset containing CT scans with hip fractures. The evaluation metrics are Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), average symmetric surface distance (ASSD), and Hausdorff distance (95HD). The proposed method achieves an average DSC of 93.36%, ASSD of 0.85mm, 95HD of 7.51mm. Our method offers an effective fracture segmentation approach for the pelvic CT examinations, and has the potential to be used for improving the segmentation performance of other types of fractures.

ComposerX: Multi-Agent Symbolic Music Composition with LLMs

Music composition represents the creative side of humanity, and itself is a complex task that requires abilities to understand and generate information with long dependency and harmony constraints. While demonstrating impressive capabilities in STEM subjects, current LLMs easily fail in this task, generating ill-written music even when equipped with modern techniques like In-Context-Learning and Chain-of-Thoughts. To further explore and enhance LLMs' potential in music composition by leveraging their reasoning ability and the large knowledge base in music history and theory, we propose ComposerX, an agent-based symbolic music generation framework. We find that applying a multi-agent approach significantly improves the music composition quality of GPT-4. The results demonstrate that ComposerX is capable of producing coherent polyphonic music compositions with captivating melodies, while adhering to user instructions.

Low-Latency Video Conferencing via Optimized Packet Routing and Reordering

In the face of rising global demand for video meetings, managing traffic across geographically distributed (geo-distributed) data centers presents a significant challenge due to the dynamic and limited nature of inter-DC network performance. Facing these issues, this paper introduces two novel techniques, VCRoute and WMJitter, to optimize the performance of geo-distributed video conferencing systems. VCRoute is a routing method designed for audio data packets of video conferences. It treats the routing problem as a Multi-Armed Bandit issue, and utilizes a tailored Thompson Sampling algorithm for resolution. Unlike traditional approaches, VCRoute considers transmitting latency and its variance simultaneously by using Thompson Sampling algorithm, which leads to effective end-to-end latency optimization. In conjunction with VCRoute, we present WMJitter, a watermark-based mechanism for managing network jitter, which can further reduce the end-to-end delay and keep an improved balance between latency and loss rate. Evaluations based on real geo-distributed network performance demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of VCRoute and WMJitter, offering robust solutions for optimizing video conferencing systems in geo-distributed settings.

Resonances involving integer magnons and spin-1/2 excitations in a magnetism modulated two-dimensional electron gas

We conduct an experimental study of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells modulated by strong magnetism at an in-plane magnetic field ($B$). The modulated $B$-fields are performed via the single stripe and gratings which are made of the heavy rare earth metal Terbium (Tb) thin films on the sample surface. The robust ferromagnetic resonances (FMRs) persist to the temperature of 50-70 K in both the stripe and grating samples, for the ferromagnetism (FM) phase of Tb exists at above 100 K. The high-order (with integer numbers of $j \equiv \hbarω/gμ_{B}B = 1, 2,$...) magnetic resonances can also be observed in the stripe structure via the microwave (MW) photovoltaic detection and magnetoresistance under microwave irradiation. In addition, the resonance features around $j = 1/2$ are robust in the single-stripe modulated sample, which suggests the spinons with spin-1/2 collective excitations in a 1D Heisenberg model.

On the homotopy type of the space of fiberings of $S^1 \times S^2$ by simple closed curves

For most aspherical Seifert-fibered 3-manifolds $M$, the space of Seifert fiberings $SF(M)$ is known to have contractible components. It is also known that the space of Hopf fiberings of the three-sphere is noncontractible. We provide the second example of a non-aspherical 3-manifold $M$ such that $SF(M)$ has noncontractible components. In particular, we show that certain components of $SF(S^1 \times S^2)$ are homotopy equivalent to a subspace homeomorphic to the identity-based loop space $ΩSO(3)$, and we exhibit second homology generators for both connected components of $SF(S^1 \times S^2)$.

A Global Stochastic Maximum Principle for Mean-Field Forward-Backward Stochastic Control Systems with Quadratic Generators

Our paper is devoted to the study of Peng's stochastic maximum principle (SMP) for a stochastic control problem composed of a controlled forward stochastic differential equation (SDE) as dynamics and a controlled backward SDE which defines the cost functional. Our studies combine the difficulties which come, on one hand, from the fact that the coefficients of both the SDE and the backward SDE are of mean-field type (i.e., they do not only depend on the control process and the solution processes but also on their law), and on the other hand, from the fact that the coefficient of the BSDE is of quadratic growth in $Z$. Our SMP is novel, it extends in a by far non trivial way existing results on SMP.

Texture Classification Network Integrating Adaptive Wavelet Transform

Graves' disease is a common condition that is diagnosed clinically by determining the smoothness of the thyroid texture and its morphology in ultrasound images. Currently, the most widely used approach for the automated diagnosis of Graves' disease utilizes Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for both feature extraction and classification. However, these methods demonstrate limited efficacy in capturing texture features. Given the high capacity of wavelets in describing texture features, this research integrates learnable wavelet modules utilizing the Lifting Scheme into CNNs and incorporates a parallel wavelet branch into the ResNet18 model to enhance texture feature extraction. Our model can analyze texture features in spatial and frequency domains simultaneously, leading to optimized classification accuracy. We conducted experiments on collected ultrasound datasets and publicly available natural image texture datasets, our proposed network achieved 97.27% accuracy and 95.60% recall on ultrasound datasets, 60.765% accuracy on natural image texture datasets, surpassing the accuracy of ResNet and conrming the effectiveness of our approach.

Requirements Elicitation in Government Projects: A Preliminary Empirical Study

Government development projects vary significantly from private sector initiatives in scope, stakeholder complexity, and regulatory requirements. There is a lack of empirical studies focusing on requirements engineering (RE) activities specifically for government projects. We addressed this gap by conducting a series of semi-structured interviews with 12 professional software practitioners working on government projects. These interviewees are employed by two types of companies, each serving different government departments. Our findings uncover differences in the requirements elicitation phase between government projects, particularly for data visualization aspects, and other software projects, such as stakeholders and policy requirements. Additionally, we explore the coverage of human and social aspects in requirements elicitation, finding that culture, team dynamics, and policy implications are critical considerations. Our findings also pinpoint the main challenges encountered during the requirements elicitation phase for government projects. Our findings highlight future research work that is important to bridge the gap in RE activities for government software projects.

QuickQuakeBuildings: Post-earthquake SAR-Optical Dataset for Quick Damaged-building Detection

Quick and automated earthquake-damaged building detection from post-event satellite imagery is crucial, yet it is challenging due to the scarcity of training data required to develop robust algorithms. This letter presents the first dataset dedicated to detecting earthquake-damaged buildings from post-event very high resolution (VHR) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical imagery. Utilizing open satellite imagery and annotations acquired after the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes, we deliver a dataset of coregistered building footprints and satellite image patches of both SAR and optical data, encompassing more than four thousand buildings. The task of damaged building detection is formulated as a binary image classification problem, that can also be treated as an anomaly detection problem due to extreme class imbalance. We provide baseline methods and results to serve as references for comparison. Researchers can utilize this dataset to expedite algorithm development, facilitating the rapid detection of damaged buildings in response to future events. The dataset and codes together with detailed explanations and visualization are made publicly available at \url{https://github.com/ya0-sun/PostEQ-SARopt-BuildingDamage}.
