Multi-scale Generative Modeling for Fast Sampling

While working within the spatial domain can pose problems associated with ill-conditioned scores caused by power-law decay, recent advances in diffusion-based generative models have shown that transitioning to the wavelet domain offers a promising alternative. However, within the wavelet domain, we encounter unique challenges, especially the sparse representation of high-frequency coefficients, which deviates significantly from the Gaussian assumptions in the diffusion process. To this end, we propose a multi-scale generative modeling in the wavelet domain that employs distinct strategies for handling low and high-frequency bands. In the wavelet domain, we apply score-based generative modeling with well-conditioned scores for low-frequency bands, while utilizing a multi-scale generative adversarial learning for high-frequency bands. As supported by the theoretical analysis and experimental results, our model significantly improve performance and reduce the number of trainable parameters, sampling steps, and time.

Nonlocal, Pattern-aware Response and Feedback Framework for Regional Climate Change

We devise a pattern-aware feedback framework for representing the forced climate response using a suite of Green's function experiments with solar radiation perturbations. By considering the column energy balance, a comprehensive linear response function (CLRF) forimportant climate variables and feedback quantities such as moist static energy, sea surface temperature, albedo, cloud optical depth, and lapse rate is learned from Green's function data. The learned CLRF delineates the effects of the energy diffusion in both the ocean and atmosphere and the pattern-aware feedbacks from the aforementioned radiatively active processes. The CLRF can then be decomposed into forcing-response mode pairs which are in turn used to construct a reduced-order model (ROM) describing the dominant dynamics of climate responses. These mode pairs capture nonlocal effects and teleconnections in the climate and thus, make the ROM apt for capturing regional features of climate change response. A key observation is that the CLRF captures the polar amplified response as the most excitable mode of the climate system and this mode is explainable in the data-learned pattern-aware feedback framework. The ROM can be used for predicting the response for a given forcing and for reconstructing the forcing from a given response; we demonstrate these capabilities for independent forcing pattern.

Atrial Fibrillation Detection System via Acoustic Sensing for Mobile Phones

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is characterized by irregular electrical impulses originating in the atria, which can lead to severe complications and even death. Due to the intermittent nature of the AF, early and timely monitoring of AF is critical for patients to prevent further exacerbation of the condition. Although ambulatory ECG Holter monitors provide accurate monitoring, the high cost of these devices hinders their wider adoption. Current mobile-based AF detection systems offer a portable solution, however, these systems have various applicability issues such as being easily affected by environmental factors and requiring significant user effort. To overcome the above limitations, we present MobileAF, a novel smartphone-based AF detection system using speakers and microphones. In order to capture minute cardiac activities, we propose a multi-channel pulse wave probing method. In addition, we enhance the signal quality by introducing a three-stage pulse wave purification pipeline. What's more, a ResNet-based network model is built to implement accurate and reliable AF detection. We collect data from 23 participants utilizing our data collection application on the smartphone. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of our system, with 97.9% accuracy, 96.8% precision, 97.2% recall, 98.3% specificity, and 97.0% F1 score.

DiffX: Guide Your Layout to Cross-Modal Generative Modeling

Diffusion models have made significant strides in language-driven and layout-driven image generation. However, most diffusion models are limited to visible RGB image generation. In fact, human perception of the world is enriched by diverse viewpoints, such as chromatic contrast, thermal illumination, and depth information. In this paper, we introduce a novel diffusion model for general layout-guided cross-modal generation, called DiffX. Notably, our DiffX presents a compact and effective cross-modal generative modeling pipeline, which conducts diffusion and denoising processes in the modality-shared latent space. Moreover, we introduce the Joint-Modality Embedder (JME) to enhance the interaction between layout and text conditions by incorporating a gated attention mechanism. To facilitate the user-instructed training, we construct the cross-modal image datasets with detailed text captions by the Large-Multimodal Model (LMM) and our human-in-the-loop refinement. Through extensive experiments, our DiffX demonstrates robustness in cross-modal ''RGB+X'' image generation on FLIR, MFNet, and COME15K datasets, guided by various layout conditions. Meanwhile, it shows the strong potential for the adaptive generation of ``RGB+X+Y(+Z)'' images or more diverse modalities on FLIR, MFNet, COME15K, and MCXFace datasets. To our knowledge, DiffX is the first model for layout-guided cross-modal image generation. Our code and constructed cross-modal image datasets are available at https://github.com/zeyuwang-zju/DiffX.

MagicEraser: Erasing Any Objects via Semantics-Aware Control

The traditional image inpainting task aims to restore corrupted regions by referencing surrounding background and foreground. However, the object erasure task, which is in increasing demand, aims to erase objects and generate harmonious background. Previous GAN-based inpainting methods struggle with intricate texture generation. Emerging diffusion model-based algorithms, such as Stable Diffusion Inpainting, exhibit the capability to generate novel content, but they often produce incongruent results at the locations of the erased objects and require high-quality text prompt inputs. To address these challenges, we introduce MagicEraser, a diffusion model-based framework tailored for the object erasure task. It consists of two phases: content initialization and controllable generation. In the latter phase, we develop two plug-and-play modules called prompt tuning and semantics-aware attention refocus. Additionally, we propose a data construction strategy that generates training data specially suitable for this task. MagicEraser achieves fine and effective control of content generation while mitigating undesired artifacts. Experimental results highlight a valuable advancement of our approach in the object erasure task.

Unpaired Image Translation to Mitigate Domain Shift in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber Detector Responses

Deep learning algorithms often are trained and deployed on different datasets. Any systematic difference between the training and a test dataset may degrade the algorithm performance--what is known as the domain shift problem. This issue is prevalent in many scientific domains where algorithms are trained on simulated data but applied to real-world datasets. Typically, the domain shift problem is solved through various domain adaptation methods. However, these methods are often tailored for a specific downstream task and may not easily generalize to different tasks. This work explores the feasibility of using an alternative way to solve the domain shift problem that is not specific to any downstream algorithm. The proposed approach relies on modern Unpaired Image-to-Image translation techniques, designed to find translations between different image domains in a fully unsupervised fashion. In this study, the approach is applied to a domain shift problem commonly encountered in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) detector research when seeking a way to translate samples between two differently distributed detector datasets deterministically. This translation allows for mapping real-world data into the simulated data domain where the downstream algorithms can be run with much less domain-shift-related degradation. Conversely, using the translation from the simulated data in a real-world domain can increase the realism of the simulated dataset and reduce the magnitude of any systematic uncertainties. We adapted several UI2I translation algorithms to work on scientific data and demonstrated the viability of these techniques for solving the domain shift problem with LArTPC detector data. To facilitate further development of domain adaptation techniques for scientific datasets, the "Simple Liquid-Argon Track Samples" dataset used in this study also is published.

Diagnosis and Pathogenic Analysis of Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Fused Brain Connection Graph

We propose a model for diagnosing Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Our approach integrates brain connectivity data from diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and functional MRI (fMRI), employing graph neural networks (GNNs) for fused graph classification. To improve diagnostic accuracy, we introduce a loss function that maximizes inter-class and minimizes intra-class margins. We also analyze network node centrality, calculating degree, subgraph, and eigenvector centralities on a bimodal fused brain graph to identify pathological regions linked to ASD. Two non-parametric tests assess the statistical significance of these centralities between ASD patients and healthy controls. Our results reveal consistency between the tests, yet the identified regions differ significantly across centralities, suggesting distinct physiological interpretations. These findings enhance our understanding of ASD's neurobiological basis and offer new directions for clinical diagnosis.

The 2nd FutureDial Challenge: Dialog Systems with Retrieval Augmented Generation (FutureDial-RAG)

Recently, increasing research interests have focused on retrieval augmented generation (RAG) to mitigate hallucination for large language models (LLMs). Following this trend, we launch the FutureDial-RAG challenge at SLT 2024, which aims at promoting the study of RAG for dialog systems. The challenge builds upon the MobileCS2 dataset, a real-life customer service datasets with nearly 3000 high-quality dialogs containing annotations for knowledge base query and corresponding results. Over the dataset, we define two tasks, track 1 for knowledge retrieval and track 2 for response generation, which are core research questions in dialog systems with RAG. We build baseline systems for the two tracks and design metrics to measure whether the systems can perform accurate retrieval and generate informative and coherent response. The baseline results show that it is very challenging to perform well on the two tasks, which encourages the participating teams and the community to study how to make better use of RAG for real-life dialog systems.

Exploiting Supervised Poison Vulnerability to Strengthen Self-Supervised Defense

Availability poisons exploit supervised learning (SL) algorithms by introducing class-related shortcut features in images such that models trained on poisoned data are useless for real-world datasets. Self-supervised learning (SSL), which utilizes augmentations to learn instance discrimination, is regarded as a strong defense against poisoned data. However, by extending the study of SSL across multiple poisons on the CIFAR-10 and ImageNet-100 datasets, we demonstrate that it often performs poorly, far below that of training on clean data. Leveraging the vulnerability of SL to poison attacks, we introduce adversarial training (AT) on SL to obfuscate poison features and guide robust feature learning for SSL. Our proposed defense, designated VESPR (Vulnerability Exploitation of Supervised Poisoning for Robust SSL), surpasses the performance of six previous defenses across seven popular availability poisons. VESPR displays superior performance over all previous defenses, boosting the minimum and average ImageNet-100 test accuracies of poisoned models by 16% and 9%, respectively. Through analysis and ablation studies, we elucidate the mechanisms by which VESPR learns robust class features.

UAV-Mounted Movable Antenna: Joint Optimization of UAV Placement and Antenna Configuration

Recently, movable antennas (MAs) have garnered immense attention due to their capability to favorably alter channel conditions through agile movement. In this letter, we delve into a spectrum sharing system enabled by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) mounted MAs, thereby introducing a new degree of freedom vertically alongside the horizontal local mobility for MAs. Our objective is to maximize the minimum beamforming gain for secondary users (SUs) while ensuring that interference to the primary users (PUs) remains below a predefined threshold, which necessitates a joint optimization involving the UAV's height, the antenna weight vector (AWV), and the antenna position vector (APV). However, the formulated optimization problem is non-convex and challenging to solve optimally. To tackle this issue, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm that optimizes the UAV's height, APV and AWV in an iterative manner, thus yielding a near-optimal solution. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme as well as its ability to deliver full beamforming gain to SUs with reduced computational complexity.

V4d: voxel for 4d novel view synthesis

Neural radiance fields have made a remarkable breakthrough in the novel view synthesis task at the 3D static scene. However, for the 4D circumstance (e.g., dynamic scene), the performance of the existing method is still limited by the capacity of the neural network, typically in a multilayer perceptron network (MLP). In this paper, we utilize 3D Voxel to model the 4D neural radiance field, short as V4D, where the 3D voxel has two formats. The first one is to regularly model the 3D space and then use the sampled local 3D feature with the time index to model the density field and the texture field by a tiny MLP. The second one is in look-up tables (LUTs) format that is for the pixel-level refinement, where the pseudo-surface produced by the volume rendering is utilized as the guidance information to learn a 2D pixel-level refinement mapping. The proposed LUTs-based refinement module achieves the performance gain with little computational cost and could serve as the plug-and-play module in the novel view synthesis task. Moreover, we propose a more effective conditional positional encoding toward the 4D data that achieves performance gain with negligible computational burdens. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance at a low computational cost.

Bound state-continuum resonance transition in a shallow quantum well

We show a transition from a bound state to a continuum resonance in a shallow quantum well (QW) by electrostatic gating to bend the conduction band edge. This bound state-continuum resonance (BSCR) transition is particularly relevant in topological quantum computing platforms where shallow InAs QWs are used. We predict the observed capacitance jump and the parallel metal-insulator transition accompanied the BSCR transition. An experimental puzzle in shallow InAs QWs is the mobility drop at an electron density smaller than expected for the bound-state second subband occupation. We explain this puzzle as a result of intersubband scattering involving a level-broadened continuum resonance, mediated by screened Coulomb impurities.

Multi-scale Conditional Generative Modeling for Microscopic Image Restoration

The advance of diffusion-based generative models in recent years has revolutionized state-of-the-art (SOTA) techniques in a wide variety of image analysis and synthesis tasks, whereas their adaptation on image restoration, particularly within computational microscopy remains theoretically and empirically underexplored. In this research, we introduce a multi-scale generative model that enhances conditional image restoration through a novel exploitation of the Brownian Bridge process within wavelet domain. By initiating the Brownian Bridge diffusion process specifically at the lowest-frequency subband and applying generative adversarial networks at subsequent multi-scale high-frequency subbands in the wavelet domain, our method provides significant acceleration during training and sampling while sustaining a high image generation quality and diversity on par with SOTA diffusion models. Experimental results on various computational microscopy and imaging tasks confirm our method's robust performance and its considerable reduction in its sampling steps and time. This pioneering technique offers an efficient image restoration framework that harmonizes efficiency with quality, signifying a major stride in incorporating cutting-edge generative models into computational microscopy workflows.

Energy efficiency analysis of ammonia-fueled power systems for vehicles considering residual heat recovery

Ammonia, known as a good hydrogen carrier, shows great potential for use as a zero-carbon fuel for vehicles. However, both the internal combustion engine (ICE) and the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), the currently available engines used by the vehicle, require hydrogen decomposed from ammonia. On-board hydrogen production is an energy-intensive process that significantly reduces system efficiency. Therefore, energy recovery from the system's residual heat is essential to promote system efficiency. ICEs and FCs require different amounts of hydrogen, and they produce residual heat of different quality and quantity, so the system efficiency is not only determined by the engine operating point, but also by the measures and ratios of residual heat recovery. To thoroughly understand the relationships between system energy efficiency and system configuration as well as system parameters, this paper takes three typical power systems with different configurations as our objects. Models of three systems are set up for system energy efficiency analysis, and carry out simulations under different conditions to conduct system output power and energy efficiency. By analyzing the simulation results, the factors that most significantly impact the system efficiency are identified, the guidelines for system design and parameter optimization are proposed.

Elastic CRFs for Open-ontology Slot Filling

Slot filling is a crucial component in task-oriented dialog systems that is used to parse (user) utterances into semantic concepts called slots. An ontology is defined by the collection of slots and the values that each slot can take. The most widely used practice of treating slot filling as a sequence labeling task suffers from two main drawbacks. First, the ontology is usually pre-defined and fixed and therefore is not able to detect new labels for unseen slots. Second, the one-hot encoding of slot labels ignores the correlations between slots with similar semantics, which makes it difficult to share knowledge learned across different domains. To address these problems, we propose a new model called elastic conditional random field (eCRF), where each slot is represented by the embedding of its natural language description and modeled by a CRF layer. New slot values can be detected by eCRF whenever a language description is available for the slot. In our experiment, we show that eCRFs outperform existing models in both in-domain and cross-domain tasks, especially in predicting unseen slots and values.

MirrorGaussian: Reflecting 3D Gaussians for Reconstructing Mirror Reflections

3D Gaussian Splatting showcases notable advancements in photo-realistic and real-time novel view synthesis. However, it faces challenges in modeling mirror reflections, which exhibit substantial appearance variations from different viewpoints. To tackle this problem, we present MirrorGaussian, the first method for mirror scene reconstruction with real-time rendering based on 3D Gaussian Splatting. The key insight is grounded on the mirror symmetry between the real-world space and the virtual mirror space. We introduce an intuitive dual-rendering strategy that enables differentiable rasterization of both the real-world 3D Gaussians and the mirrored counterpart obtained by reflecting the former about the mirror plane. All 3D Gaussians are jointly optimized with the mirror plane in an end-to-end framework. MirrorGaussian achieves high-quality and real-time rendering in scenes with mirrors, empowering scene editing like adding new mirrors and objects. Comprehensive experiments on multiple datasets demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms existing methods, achieving state-of-the-art results.
