Monotone Equilibrium, Admissibility and Perfection

This paper studies monotone equilibrium, admissibility, and perfection in Bayesian games. Athey (2001), McAdams (2003), and Reny (2011) prove existence of pure-strategy monotone equilibria under single-crossing and quasi-supermodularity. We construct a counterexample satisfying these assumptions but with no admissible monotone equilibrium, showing these results cannot generally be strengthened without further conditions. To address this existence problem, we introduce perfect monotone equilibrium, combining monotonicity with trembling-hand robustness. We show that stronger assumptions such as increasing differences and supermodularity ensure existence of perfect (and hence admissible) monotone equilibria. We also demonstrate the practical relevance of our results through auctions and Bertrand competitions.

Characterization of equilibrium existence and purification in general Bayesian games

This paper studies Bayesian games with general action spaces, correlated types and interdependent payoffs. We introduce the condition of ``decomposable coarser payoff-relevant information'', and show that this condition is both sufficient and necessary for the existence of pure-strategy equilibria and purification from behavioral strategies. As a consequence of our purification method, a new existence result on pure-strategy equilibria is also obtained for discontinuous Bayesian games. Illustrative applications of our results to oligopolistic competitions and all-pay auctions are provided.

Conditional Expectation of Banach Valued Correspondences

We present some regularity properties (convexity, weak/weak* compactness and preservation of weak/weak* upper hemicontinuity) for Bochner/Gelfand conditional expectation of Banach valued correspondences under the nowhere equivalence condition. These regularity properties for Bochner/Gelfand integral of Banach valued correspondences are obtained as corollaries. Similar properties for regular conditional distributions are also covered by the corresponding results for Gelfand conditional expectation of correspondences. We prove the necessity of the nowhere equivalence condition for any of these properties to hold. As an application, we show that the nowhere equivalence condition is satisfied on the space of players if and only if a pure-strategy Nash equilibrium exists in a general class of large games.

Robust perfect equilibrium in large games

This paper proposes a new equilibrium concept "robust perfect equilibrium" for non-cooperative games with a continuum of players, incorporating three types of perturbations. Such an equilibrium is shown to exist (in symmetric mixed strategies and in pure strategies) and satisfy the important properties of admissibility, aggregate robustness, and ex post robust perfection. These properties strengthen relevant equilibrium results in an extensive literature on strategic interactions among a large number of agents. Illustrative applications to congestion games and potential games are presented. In the particular case of a congestion game with strictly increasing cost functions, we show that there is a unique symmetric robust perfect equilibrium.

Does randomization matter in dynamic games?

This paper investigates mixed strategies in dynamic games with perfect information. We present an example to show that a player may obtain higher payoff by playing mixed strategy. By contrast, the main result of the paper shows that every two-player dynamic zero-sum game with nature has the no-mixing property, which implies that mixed strategy is useless in this most classical class of games. As for applications, we show the existence of pure-strategy subgame-perfect equilibria in two-player zero-sum games with nature. Based on the main result, we also prove the existence of a universal subgame-perfect equilibrium that can induce all the pure-strategy subgame-perfect equilibria in such games. A generalization of the main result for multiple players and some further results are also discussed.

The Necessity of Nowhere Equivalence

We prove some regularity properties (convexity, closedness, compactness and preservation of upper hemicontinuity) for distribution and regular conditional distribution of correspondences under the nowhere equivalence condition. We show the necessity of such a condition for any of these properties to hold. As an application, we demonstrate that the nowhere equivalence condition is satisfied on the underlying agent space if and only if pure-strategy Nash equilibria exist in general large games with any fixed uncountable compact action space.

Stationary Markov Perfect Equilibria in Discounted Stochastic Games

The existence of stationary Markov perfect equilibria in stochastic games is shown under a general condition called "(decomposable) coarser transition kernels". This result covers various earlier existence results on correlated equilibria, noisy stochastic games, stochastic games with finite actions and state-independent transitions, and stochastic games with mixtures of constant transition kernels as special cases. A remarkably simple proof is provided via establishing a new connection between stochastic games and conditional expectations of correspondences. New applications of stochastic games are presented as illustrative examples, including stochastic games with endogenous shocks and a stochastic dynamic oligopoly model.

Dynamic Games with Almost Perfect Information

This paper aims to solve two fundamental problems on finite or infinite horizon dynamic games with perfect or almost perfect information. Under some mild conditions, we prove (1) the existence of subgame-perfect equilibria in general dynamic games with almost perfect information, and (2) the existence of pure-strategy subgame-perfect equilibria in perfect-information dynamic games with uncertainty. Our results go beyond previous works on continuous dynamic games in the sense that public randomization and the continuity requirement on the state variables are not needed. As an illustrative application, a dynamic stochastic oligopoly market with intertemporally dependent payoffs is considered.

Conditional Exact Law of Large Numbers and Asymmetric Information Economies with Aggregate Uncertainty

A stochastic model with a continuum of economic agents often involves shocks at both macro and micro levels. This can be formalized by a continuum of random variables that are conditionally independent given the macro level shocks. Based on the framework of a Fubini extension, the results on the exact law of large numbers and its converse for a con- tinuum of independent random variables in [14] are extended to the setting with conditional independence given general macro states. As an illustrative application, it is shown that any ex ante efficient allocation in an asymmetric information economy with general aggre- gate uncertainty has a (utility) equivalent allocation that is incentive compatible, which generalizes the corresponding results in [15] to the case with infinitely many states.

Conditional Expectations of Correspondences

We characterize the properties of convexity, compactness and preservation of upper hemicontinuity for conditional expectations of correspondences. These results are then applied to obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of pure strategy equilibria in Bayesian games.

Individual Risk and Lebesgue Extension without Aggregate Uncertainty

Many economic models include random shocks imposed on a large number (continuum) of economic agents with individual risk. In this context, an exact law of large numbers and its converse is presented in Sun (2006) to characterize the cancelation of individual risk via aggregation. However, it is well known that the Lebesgue unit interval is not suitable for modeling a continuum of agents in the particular setting. The purpose of this paper is to show that an extension of the Lebesgue unit interval does work well as an agent space with various desirable properties associated with individual risk.

Existence of independent random matching

This paper shows the existence of independent random matching of a large (continuum) population in both static and dynamic systems, which has been popular in the economics and genetics literatures. We construct a joint agent-probability space, and randomized mutation, partial matching and match-induced type-changing functions that satisfy appropriate independence conditions. The proofs are achieved via nonstandard analysis. The proof for the dynamic setting relies on a new Fubini-type theorem for an infinite product of Loeb transition probabilities, based on which a continuum of independent Markov chains is derived from random mutation, random partial matching and random type changing.
