Local magnon modes studied by dynamic magnetic pair-density function analysis

The dynamic magnetic pair-density function (DymPDF) $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$ is obtained via the Fourier transform of the dynamic magnetic structure factor, $S_{\rm M}(Q, E)$, which is measured using nonpolarized inelastic neutron scattering. While there is a long history of magnetic excitation studies with $S_{\rm M}(Q, E)$, there are no reports on $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$. In this study, we examine simple magnet models and representative magnet examples, such as FeTiO$_{3}$ and YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6}$, to investigate the real-space dynamics of $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$. We derive the $D_{\rm M}(r, E)$ equations for simple magnet models in a low energy limit. By comparing these equations to the simulations, we demonstrate the characteristic energy dependence of real-space local magnon modes, including the transition of the magnon mode from acoustic to optical. Our novel analysis reveals the local magnon modes accompanied by a sign change in each spin-pair correlation at a given energy in nanoscale real space even under non-periodic conditions. This method is unique for studying local magnetic dynamics.

Three-dimensional spin susceptibility in Ba$_{0.75}$K$_{0.25}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$: Out-of-plane modulation revealed by neutron spectroscopy and theoretical modeling

We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the spin dynamics in the iron-based superconductor Ba$_{0.75}$K$_{0.25}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. Time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal the three-dimensional (3D) nature of the spin fluctuations, manifested as out-of-plane modulations of the low-energy magnetic intensity. As the energy increases, this 3D-like modulation gradually fades away, leading to a more two-dimensional (2D) profile -- a clear signature of a 3D-to-2D crossover in the spin dynamics. By incorporating a realistic 3D electronic band structure derived from density functional theory (DFT), we reproduce the experimentally observed features of the spin susceptibility, including the pronounced out-of-plane modulation at low energies and its gradual evolution into a more 2D character at higher energies. The calculated susceptibility exhibits a peak at the experimental ordering wavevector $\mathbf{q}_{\mathrm{AFM}} = (0.5, 0.5, 1)$, demonstrating that the DFT-derived 3D model accurately captures the tendency toward out-of-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Notably, electronic states away from the Fermi level play a crucial role in shaping the susceptibility peak at $\mathbf{q}_{\mathrm{AFM}}$, highlighting the limitations of the Fermi surface nesting picture in explaining the out-of-plane AFM instability. The demonstrated agreement between experiment and theory serves as a benchmark for validating the DFT-derived model as a realistic description of the material-specific electronic structure.

Stroboscopic Time-of-Flight Neutron Diffraction in Long Pulsed Magnetic Fields

We present proof-of-principle experiments of stroboscopic time-of-flight (TOF) neutron diffraction in long pulsed magnetic fields. By utilizing electric double-layer capacitors, we developed a long pulsed magnet for neutron diffraction measurements, which generates pulsed magnetic fields with the full widths at the half maximum of more than $10^2$ ms. The field variation is slow enough to be approximated as a steady field within the time scale of a polychromatic neutron pulse passing through a sample placed in a distance of the order of $10^1$ m from the neutron source. This enables us to efficiently explore the reciprocal space using a wide range of neutron wavelength in high magnetic fields. We applied this technique to investigate field-induced magnetic phases in the triangular lattice antiferromagnets CuFe$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$O$_2$ ($x=0, 0.035$).

Q Dependence of Magnetic Resonance Mode on FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ Studied by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on a superconducting single crystal FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ to examine the ${\bf Q}$-dependent enhancement of the dynamical structure factor, $S({\bf Q},E)$, from ${\bf Q}$ = (0, 0) to ($\pi$, $\pi$), including ($\pi$, 0) in the superconducting state. In most of iron-based superconductors, $S({\bf Q},E)$ is enhanced at ${\bf Q}$ = ($\pi$, 0), where the "magnetic resonance mode" is commonly observed in the unfolded Brillouin zone. Constant-$E$ cuts of $S({\bf Q},E)$ suggest that the enhancement is not uniform in the magnetic excitation, and limited around ${\bf Q}$ = ($\pi$, 0). This result is consistent with the theoretical simulation of the magnetic resonance mode due to the Bardeen$-$Cooper$-$Schrieffer coherence factor with the sign-reversing order parameter of s$_{\pm}$ wave.

Energy Resolution and Neutron Flux of the 4SEASONS Spectrometer Revisited

The elastic energy resolution, integrated intensity, and peak intensity of the direct-geometry neutron chopper spectrometer 4SEASONS at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) were re-investigated. This was done with respect to the incident energy and the rotation speed of the Fermi chopper using incoherent scattering of vanadium and simple analytical formulas. The model calculations reproduced the observed values satisfactorily. The present work should be useful for estimating in instrument performance in experiments.

Quantum dynamics of hydrogen in iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1 measured with inelastic neutron spectroscopy

Inelastic neutron scattering was performed for an iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO0.9D0.1, where most of D (deuterium) replaces oxygen, while a tiny amount goes into interstitial sites. By first-principle calculation, we characterize the interstitial sites for D (and for H slightly mixed) with four equivalent potential minima. Below the superconducting transition temperature Tc = 26 K,new excitations emerge in the range 5-15 meV, while they are absent in the reference system LaFeAsO0.9F0.1. The strong excitations at 14.5 meV and 11.1 meV broaden rapidly around 15 K and 20 K, respectively, where each energy becomes comparable to twice of the superconducting gap. The strong excitations are ascribed to a quantum rattling, or a band motion of hydrogen, which arises only if the number of potential minima is larger than two.

Spin gap and L modulated intensity at the low-energy incommensurate magnetic fluctuations in the superconducting state of Sr2RuO4

Low-energy incommensurate (IC) magnetic fluctuations in the multiband superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ is investigated by high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below $T_\text{c}$, the substantial spin gap is observed at $\mathbf{Q}_\text{IC}=(0.3, 0.3, L)$ where the quasi-one-dimensional $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets consisting of the Fermi surfaces are in good nesting conditions. $L$ modulated intensity of the low-energy IC magnetic fluctuations and our RPA calculations indicate that the superconducting gaps regarding the $\alpha$ and $\beta$ sheets have the horizontal line nodes.

Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Instrumental Resolution of the Chopper Spectrometer 4SEASONS Evaluated by Monte Carlo Simulation

We performed simulations of the resolution function of the 4SEASONS spectrometer at J-PARC by using the Monte Carlo simulation package McStas. The simulations showed reasonably good agreement with analytical calculations of energy and momentum resolutions by using a simplified description. We implemented new functionalities in Utsusemi, the standard data analysis tool used in 4SEASONS, to enable visualization of the simulated resolution function and predict its shape for specific experimental configurations.

Neutron-scattering study of yttrium iron garnet

The nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The refined nuclear structure is distorted to a trigonal space group of $R\bar{3}$. The highest-energy dispersion extends up to 86 meV. The observed dispersions are reproduced by a simple model with three nearest-neighbor-exchange integrals between 16$a$ (octahedral) and 24$d$ (tetrahedral) sites, $J_{aa}$, $J_{ad}$, and $J_{dd}$, which are estimated to be 0.00$\pm$0.05, $-$2.90$\pm$0.07, and $-$0.35$\pm$0.08 meV, respectively. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $q$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $\chi$"($E$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $\chi$"($E$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single polarization mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

Switching of intra-orbital spin excitations in electron-doped iron pnictide superconductors

We investigate the doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in two-superconducting-dome-system LaFeAsO1-xDx. Using inelastic neutron scattering, spin fluctuations at different wavenumbers were observed under both superconducting domes around x = 0.1 and 0.4, but vanished at x = 0.2 corresponding to the Tc valley. Theoretical calculations indicate that the characteristic doping dependence of spin fluctuations is rationally explained as a consequence of the switching of the two intra-orbital nestings within Fe-3dYZ, ZX and 3dX2-Y2 by electron doping. The present results imply that the multi-orbital nature plays an important role in the doping and / or material dependence of the Tc of the iron pnictide superconductors.
