Simultaneously Color-Depth Super-Resolution with Conditional Generative Adversarial Network

Recently, Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) has been found wide applications in style transfer, image-to-image translation and image super-resolution. In this paper, a color-depth conditional GAN is proposed to concurrently resolve the problems of depth super-resolution and color super-resolution in 3D videos. Firstly, given the low-resolution depth image and low-resolution color image, a generative network is proposed to leverage mutual information of color image and depth image to enhance each other in consideration of the geometry structural dependency of color-depth image in the same scene. Secondly, three loss functions, including data loss, total variation loss, and 8-connected gradient difference loss are introduced to train this generative network in order to keep generated images close to the real ones, in addition to the adversarial loss. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach produces high-quality color image and depth image from low-quality image pair, and it is superior to several other leading methods. Besides, we use the same neural network framework to resolve the problem of image smoothing and edge detection at the same time.

Critical slowing down and attractive manifold: a mechanism for dynamic robustness in yeast cell-cycle process

The biological processes that execute complex multiple functions, such as cell cycle, must ensure the order of sequential events and keep the dynamic robustness against various fluctuations. Here, we examine the dynamic mechanism and the fundamental structure to achieve these properties in the cell-cycle process of budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We show that the budding yeast cell-cycle process behaves like an excitable system containing three well-coupled saddle-node bifurcations to execute DNA replication and mitosis events. The yeast cell-cycle regulatory network can be separated into G1/S phase module, early M module and late M phase module, where the positive feedbacks in each module and the interactions among the modules play important role. If the cell-cycle process operates near the critical points of the saddle-node bifurcations, there is a critical slowing down or ghost effect. This can provide the cell-cycle process with a sufficient duration for each event and an attractive manifold for the state checking of the completion of DNA replication and mitosis; moreover, the fluctuation in the early module/event is forbidden to transmit to the latter module/event. Our results suggest both a fundamental structure of cell-cycle regulatory network and a hint for the evolution of eukaryotic cell-cycle processes, from the dynamic checking mechanism to the molecule checkpoint pathway.

EA-LSTM: Evolutionary Attention-based LSTM for Time Series Prediction

Time series prediction with deep learning methods, especially long short-term memory neural networks (LSTMs), have scored significant achievements in recent years. Despite the fact that the LSTMs can help to capture long-term dependencies, its ability to pay different degree of attention on sub-window feature within multiple time-steps is insufficient. To address this issue, an evolutionary attention-based LSTM training with competitive random search is proposed for multivariate time series prediction. By transferring shared parameters, an evolutionary attention learning approach is introduced to the LSTMs model. Thus, like that for biological evolution, the pattern for importance-based attention sampling can be confirmed during temporal relationship mining. To refrain from being trapped into partial optimization like traditional gradient-based methods, an evolutionary computation inspired competitive random search method is proposed, which can well configure the parameters in the attention layer. Experimental results have illustrated that the proposed model can achieve competetive prediction performance compared with other baseline methods.

Correlation Filter Selection for Visual Tracking Using Reinforcement Learning

Correlation filter has been proven to be an effective tool for a number of approaches in visual tracking, particularly for seeking a good balance between tracking accuracy and speed. However, correlation filter based models are susceptible to wrong updates stemming from inaccurate tracking results. To date, little effort has been devoted towards handling the correlation filter update problem. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to address the correlation filter update problem. In our approach, we update and maintain multiple correlation filter models in parallel, and we use deep reinforcement learning for the selection of an optimal correlation filter model among them. To facilitate the decision process in an efficient manner, we propose a decision-net to deal target appearance modeling, which is trained through hundreds of challenging videos using proximal policy optimization and a lightweight learning network. An exhaustive evaluation of the proposed approach on the OTB100 and OTB2013 benchmarks show that the approach is effective enough to achieve the average success rate of 62.3% and the average precision score of 81.2%, both exceeding the performance of traditional correlation filter based trackers.

Absolute instability modes due to rescattering of stimulated Raman scattering in a large nonuniform plasma

Absolute instability modes due to rescattering of SRS in a large nonuniform plasma are studied theoretically and numerically. The backscattered light of convective SRS can be considered as a pump light with a finite bandwidth. The different frequency components of the backscattered light can be coupled to develop absolute stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and two plasmon decay (TPD) instability near their quarter-critical densities via rescattering process. The absolute SRS mode develops a Langmuir wave with a high phase velocity about $c/\sqrt{3}$ with $c$ the light speed in vacuum. Given that most electrons are at low velocities in the linear stage, the absolute SRS mode grows with much weak Landau damping. When the interaction evolves into the nonlinear regime, the Langmuir wave can heat abundant electrons up to a few hundred keV. Our theoretical model is validated by particle-in-cell simulations. The absolute instabilities may play a considerable role in the experiments of inertial confined fusion.

Mixed-Resolution Image Representation and Compression with Convolutional Neural Networks

In this paper, we propose an end-to-end mixed-resolution image compression framework with convolutional neural networks. Firstly, given one input image, feature description neural network (FDNN) is used to generate a new representation of this image, so that this image representation can be more efficiently compressed by standard codec, as compared to the input image. Furthermore, we use post-processing neural network (PPNN) to remove the coding artifacts caused by quantization of codec. Secondly, low-resolution image representation is adopted for high efficiency compression in terms of most of bit spent by image's structures under low bit-rate. However, more bits should be assigned to image details in the high-resolution, when most of structures have been kept after compression at the high bit-rate. This comes from a fact that the low-resolution image representation can't burden more information than high-resolution representation beyond a certain bit-rate. Finally, to resolve the problem of error back-propagation from the PPNN network to the FDNN network, we introduce to learn a virtual codec neural network to imitate two continuous procedures of standard compression and post-processing. The objective experimental results have demonstrated the proposed method has a large margin improvement, when comparing with several state-of-the-art approaches.

Virtual Codec Supervised Re-Sampling Network for Image Compression

In this paper, we propose an image re-sampling compression method by learning virtual codec network (VCN) to resolve the non-differentiable problem of quantization function for image compression. Here, the image re-sampling not only refers to image full-resolution re-sampling but also low-resolution re-sampling. We generalize this method for standard-compliant image compression (SCIC) framework and deep neural networks based compression (DNNC) framework. Specifically, an input image is measured by re-sampling network (RSN) network to get re-sampled vectors. Then, these vectors are directly quantized in the feature space in SCIC, or discrete cosine transform coefficients of these vectors are quantized to further improve coding efficiency in DNNC. At the encoder, the quantized vectors or coefficients are losslessly compressed by arithmetic coding. At the receiver, the decoded vectors are utilized to restore input image by image decoder network (IDN). In order to train RSN network and IDN network together in an end-to-end fashion, our VCN network intimates projection from the re-sampled vectors to the IDN-decoded image. As a result, gradients from IDN network to RSN network can be approximated by VCN network's gradient. Because dimension reduction can be further achieved by quantization in some dimensional space after image re-sampling within auto-encoder architecture, we can well initialize our networks from pre-trained auto-encoder networks. Through extensive experiments and analysis, it is verified that the proposed method has more effectiveness and versatility than many state-of-the-art approaches.

Double JPEG Compression Detection by Exploring the Correlations in DCT Domain

In the field of digital image processing, JPEG image compression technique has been widely applied. And numerous image processing software suppose this. It is likely for the images undergoing double JPEG compression to be tampered. Therefore, double JPEG compression detection schemes can provide an important clue for image forgery detection. In this paper, we propose an effective algorithm to detect double JPEG compression with different quality factors. Firstly, the quantized DCT coefficients with same frequency are extracted to build the new data matrices. Then, considering the direction effect on the correlation between the adjacent positions in DCT domain, twelve kinds of high-pass filter templates with different directions are executed and the translation probability matrix is calculated for each filtered data. Furthermore, principal component analysis and support vector machine technique are applied to reduce the feature dimension and train a classifier, respectively. Experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed method is effective and has comparable performance.

Object Region Mining with Adversarial Erasing: A Simple Classification to Semantic Segmentation Approach

We investigate a principle way to progressively mine discriminative object regions using classification networks to address the weakly-supervised semantic segmentation problems. Classification networks are only responsive to small and sparse discriminative regions from the object of interest, which deviates from the requirement of the segmentation task that needs to localize dense, interior and integral regions for pixel-wise inference. To mitigate this gap, we propose a new adversarial erasing approach for localizing and expanding object regions progressively. Starting with a single small object region, our proposed approach drives the classification network to sequentially discover new and complement object regions by erasing the current mined regions in an adversarial manner. These localized regions eventually constitute a dense and complete object region for learning semantic segmentation. To further enhance the quality of the discovered regions by adversarial erasing, an online prohibitive segmentation learning approach is developed to collaborate with adversarial erasing by providing auxiliary segmentation supervision modulated by the more reliable classification scores. Despite its apparent simplicity, the proposed approach achieves 55.0% and 55.7% mean Intersection-over-Union (mIoU) scores on PASCAL VOC 2012 val and test sets, which are the new state-of-the-arts.

Cascaded Reconstruction Network for Compressive image sensing

The theory of compressed sensing (CS) has been successfully applied to image compression in the past few years, whose traditional iterative reconstruction algorithm is time-consuming. However, it has been reported deep learning-based CS reconstruction algorithms could greatly reduce the computational complexity. In this paper, we propose two efficient structures of cascaded reconstruction networks corresponding to two different sampling methods in CS process. The first reconstruction network is a compatibly sampling reconstruction network (CSRNet), which recovers an image from its compressively sensed measurement sampled by a traditional random matrix. In CSRNet, deep reconstruction network module obtains an initial image with acceptable quality, which can be further improved by residual network module based on convolutional neural network. The second reconstruction network is adaptively sampling reconstruction network (ASRNet), by matching automatically sampling module with corresponding residual reconstruction module. The experimental results have shown that the proposed two reconstruction networks outperform several state-of-the-art compressive sensing reconstruction algorithms. Meanwhile, the proposed ASRNet can achieve more than 1 dB gain, as compared with the CSRNet.

Security Consideration For Deep Learning-Based Image Forensics

Recently, image forensics community has paied attention to the research on the design of effective algorithms based on deep learning technology and facts proved that combining the domain knowledge of image forensics and deep learning would achieve more robust and better performance than the traditional schemes. Instead of improving it, in this paper, the safety of deep learning based methods in the field of image forensics is taken into account. To the best of our knowledge, this is a first work focusing on this topic. Specifically, we experimentally find that the method using deep learning would fail when adding the slight noise into the images (adversarial images). Furthermore, two kinds of strategys are proposed to enforce security of deep learning-based method. Firstly, an extra penalty term to the loss function is added, which is referred to the 2-norm of the gradient of the loss with respect to the input images, and then an novel training method are adopt to train the model by fusing the normal and adversarial images. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve good performance even in the case of adversarial images and provide a safety consideration for deep learning-based image forensics

Adaptive Streaming in Interactive Multiview Video Systems

Multiview applications endow final users with the possibility to freely navigate within 3D scenes with minimum-delay. A real feeling of scene navigation is enabled by transmitting multiple high-quality camera views, which can be used to synthesize additional virtual views to offer a smooth navigation. However, when network resources are limited, not all camera views can be sent at high quality. It is therefore important, yet challenging, to find the right tradeoff between coding artifacts (reducing the quality of camera views) and virtual synthesis artifacts (reducing the number of camera views sent to users). To this aim, we propose an optimal transmission strategy for interactive multiview HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS). We propose a problem formulation to select the optimal set of camera views that the client requests for downloading, such that the navigation quality experienced by the user is optimized while the bandwidth constraints are satisfied. We show that our optimization problem is NP-hard, and we therefore develop an optimal solution based on the dynamic programming algorithm with polynomial time complexity. To further simplify the deployment, we present a suboptimal greedy algorithm with effective performance and lower complexity. The proposed controller is evaluated in theoretical and realistic settings characterized by realistic network statistics estimation, buffer management and server-side representation optimization. Simulation results show significant improvement in terms of navigation quality compared with alternative baseline multiview adaptation logic solutions.

Non-Local Graph-Based Prediction For Reversible Data Hiding In Images

Reversible data hiding (RDH) is desirable in applications where both the hidden message and the cover medium need to be recovered without loss. Among many RDH approaches is prediction-error expansion (PEE), containing two steps: i) prediction of a target pixel value, and ii) embedding according to the value of prediction-error. In general, higher prediction performance leads to larger embedding capacity and/or lower signal distortion. Leveraging on recent advances in graph signal processing (GSP), we pose pixel prediction as a graph-signal restoration problem, where the appropriate edge weights of the underlying graph are computed using a similar patch searched in a semi-local neighborhood. Specifically, for each candidate patch, we first examine eigenvalues of its structure tensor to estimate its local smoothness. If sufficiently smooth, we pose a maximum a posteriori (MAP) problem using either a quadratic Laplacian regularizer or a graph total variation (GTV) term as signal prior. While the MAP problem using the first prior has a closed-form solution, we design an efficient algorithm for the second prior using alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with nested proximal gradient descent. Experimental results show that with better quality GSP-based prediction, at low capacity the visual quality of the embedded image exceeds state-of-the-art methods noticeably.

Indexing of CNN Features for Large Scale Image Search

The convolutional neural network (CNN) features can give a good description of image content, which usually represent images with unique global vectors. Although they are compact compared to local descriptors, they still cannot efficiently deal with large-scale image retrieval due to the cost of the linear incremental computation and storage. To address this issue, we build a simple but effective indexing framework based on inverted table, which significantly decreases both the search time and memory usage. In addition, several strategies are fully investigated under an indexing framework to adapt it to CNN features and compensate for quantization errors. First, we use multiple assignment for the query and database images to increase the probability of relevant images' co-existing in the same Voronoi cells obtained via the clustering algorithm. Then, we introduce embedding codes to further improve precision by removing false matches during a search. We demonstrate that by using hashing schemes to calculate the embedding codes and by changing the ranking rule, indexing framework speeds can be greatly improved. Extensive experiments conducted on several unsupervised and supervised benchmarks support these results and the superiority of the proposed indexing framework. We also provide a fair comparison between the popular CNN features.

Learning a Virtual Codec Based on Deep Convolutional Neural Network to Compress Image

Although deep convolutional neural network has been proved to efficiently eliminate coding artifacts caused by the coarse quantization of traditional codec, it's difficult to train any neural network in front of the encoder for gradient's back-propagation. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end image compression framework based on convolutional neural network to resolve the problem of non-differentiability of the quantization function in the standard codec. First, the feature description neural network is used to get a valid description in the low-dimension space with respect to the ground-truth image so that the amount of image data is greatly reduced for storage or transmission. After image's valid description, standard image codec such as JPEG is leveraged to further compress image, which leads to image's great distortion and compression artifacts, especially blocking artifacts, detail missing, blurring, and ringing artifacts. Then, we use a post-processing neural network to remove these artifacts. Due to the challenge of directly learning a non-linear function for a standard codec based on convolutional neural network, we propose to learn a virtual codec neural network to approximate the projection from the valid description image to the post-processed compressed image, so that the gradient could be efficiently back-propagated from the post-processing neural network to the feature description neural network during training. Meanwhile, an advanced learning algorithm is proposed to train our deep neural networks for compression. Obviously, the priority of the proposed method is compatible with standard existing codecs and our learning strategy can be easily extended into these codecs based on convolutional neural network. Experimental results have demonstrated the advances of the proposed method as compared to several state-of-the-art approaches, especially at very low bit-rate.

Ba(Zn,Co)2As2: a II-II-V Diluted Ferromagnetic Semiconductor with N-type Carriers

Diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors (DMSs) that combine the properties of semiconductors with ferromagnetism have potential application in spin-sensitive electronics (spintronics) devices. The search for DMS materials exploded after the observation of ferromagnetic ordering in III-V (Ga,Mn)As films. Recently, a series of DMS compounds isostructural to iron-based superconductors have been reported. Among them, the highest Curie temperature $T_C$ of 230 K has been achieved in (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)$_2$As$_2$. However, most DMSs, including (Ga,Mn)As, are p-type, i.e., the carriers that mediate ferromagnetism are holes. For practical applications, DMS with n-type carriers are also advantageous. Here we report the successful synthesis of a II-II-V diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor with n-type carriers, Ba(Zn,Co)$_2$As$_2$. Magnetization measurements show that the ferromagnetic transition occurs up to $T_{C} \sim$ 45 K. Hall effect and Seebeck effect measurements jointly confirm that the dominant carriers are electrons. Through muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), a volume sensitive magnetic probe, we have also confirmed that the ferromagnetism in Ba(Zn,Co)$_2$As$_2$ is intrinsic and the internal field is static.

Local Activity-tuned Image Filtering for Noise Removal and Image Smoothing

In this paper, two local activity-tuned filtering frameworks are proposed for noise removal and image smoothing, where the local activity measurement is given by the clipped and normalized local variance or standard deviation. The first framework is a modified anisotropic diffusion for noise removal of piece-wise smooth image. The second framework is a local activity-tuned Relative Total Variation (LAT-RTV) method for image smoothing. Both frameworks employ the division of gradient and the local activity measurement to achieve noise removal. In addition, to better capture local information, the proposed LAT-RTV uses the product of gradient and local activity measurement to boost the performance of image smoothing. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methods on various applications, including depth image filtering, clip-art compression artifact removal, image smoothing, and image denoising.
