Intelligent Wiretap Code Design: Exploiting Wireless Endogenous Security via Information Theory and Deep Learning Integration

Recent advancements in wireless endogenous security have explored leveraging the inherent randomness of wireless channels to enhance communication security, providing an effective alternative to traditional encryption methods. This paper proposes a wiretap coding scheme within the semantic communication framework, which leverages discrete semantic representations compatible with conventional digital modulation to jointly enhance communication security and reliability. We investigate two eavesdropping scenarios: (i) the eavesdropper employs a maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoder, and (ii) the eavesdropper has access to a decoder identical to that of the legitimate receiver. In the first scenario, we exploit mutual information as a metric to guide the design of an optimized coding strategy, minimizing information leakage while enhancing communication reliability. In the second scenario, considering the limitations of the eavesdropper's decoding capability, we employ generalized mutual information (GMI) to characterize recoverability under the prescribed decoding rule and guide reliability-aware code optimization.

Toward Semantic Communication for Real-time Mobile 3D Reconstruction

Real-time mobile 3D reconstruction is fundamental to many emerging applications such as autonomous navigation and digital twin construction, where a moving platform continuously captures an image stream and transmit to a computing server for scene understanding. Unlike offline reconstruction, camera poses and scene geometry are estimated on-the-fly during acquisition, making multi-view consistency a real-time requirement and rendering geometric estimation highly sensitive to communication-induced distortions. Semantic communication (SemCom) transmits compact semantic information, offering a promising way to preserve task-critical data over unreliable links. However, existing designs are optimized at the image or single-view level and without providing explicit reliability information for geometric estimation, limiting their applicability to real-time mobile 3D reconstruction. In this context, we propose a SemCom framework for real-time mobile 3D reconstruction. The framework includes a semantic transceiver that outputs a reconstructed image alongside a pixel-wise confidence map, quantifying the reliability of each region. We further introduce a confidence-guided geometric estimation method, incorporating confidence into RANSAC-based pose initialization and bundle adjustment to reduce the influence of unreliable regions and enhance robustness under noisy channels. Simulations show that, compared to existing SemCom and traditional seperate source and channel coding, our framework maintains high image quality while significantly improving pose estimation accuracy and 3D structural consistency.

Time-Series Classification with Multivariate Statistical Dependence Features

In this paper, we propose a novel framework for non-stationary time-series analysis that replaces conventional correlation-based statistics with direct estimation of statistical dependence in the normalized joint density of input and target signals, the cross density ratio (CDR). Unlike windowed correlation estimates, this measure is independent of sample order and robust to regime changes. The method builds on the functional maximal correlation algorithm (FMCA), which constructs a projection space by decomposing the eigenspectrum of the CDR. Multiscale features from this eigenspace are classified using a lightweight single-hidden-layer perceptron. On the TI-46 digit speech corpus, our approach outperforms hidden Markov models (HMMs) and state-of-the-art spiking neural networks, achieving higher accuracy with fewer than 10 layers and a storage footprint under 5 MB.

Joint User Association and Resource Allocation for Adaptive Semantic Communication in 5G and Beyond Networks

Semantic communication (SemCom) has emerged as a promising paradigm that leverages Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) to extract task-relevant information, thereby substantially reducing the volume of transmitted data. In existing implementations, the semantic transceiver is typically pre-trained for a specific task and uniformly adopted by all users. However, due to user heterogeneity in computational and communication capabilities, employing a single, fixed semantic transceiver may degrade the coding efficiency and transmission robustness. To address this issue, we first demonstrate the feasibility of dynamically adjusting the computational and communication overhead of DNN-based semantic transceivers, enabling a more flexible paradigm referred to as Adaptive Semantic Communication (ASC). Building on this concept, we formulate a joint user association and resource allocation problem for ASC in 5G and beyond networks, aiming to maximize overall system utility under energy and latency constraints. However, the problem is very challenging due to the inherent interdependencies among decision variables. To tackle this complexity, we decompose the original problem into three subproblems: (i) ASC scheme selection for each user, (ii) spectrum allocation at each Small-cell Base Station (SBS), and (iii) user association across SBSs. Each subproblem is solved sequentially based on the solutions of the preceding stages. The proposed algorithm efficiently yields near-optimal solutions with polynomial-time complexity. Simulation results demonstrate our approach outperforms existing baselines under various situations.

Secure Semantic Communications via AI Defenses: Fundamentals, Solutions, and Future Directions

Semantic communication (SemCom) redefines wireless communication from reproducing symbols to transmitting task-relevant semantics. However, this AI-native architecture also introduces new vulnerabilities, as semantic failures may arise from adversarial perturbations to models, corrupted training data, desynchronized priors, or misaligned inference even when lower-layer transmission reliability and cryptographic protection remain intact. This survey provides a defense-centered and system-oriented synthesis of security in SemCom via AI defense. We analyze AI-centric threat models by consolidating existing studies and organizing attack surfaces across model-level, channel-realizable, knowledge-based, and networked inference vectors. Building on this foundation, we present a structured taxonomy of defense strategies organized by where semantic integrity can be compromised in SemCom systems despite correct symbol delivery, spanning semantic encoding, wireless transmission, knowledge integrity, and coordination among multiple agents. These categories correspond to distinct security failure modes, including representation fragility, channel-realizable manipulation, semantic prior poisoning or desynchronization, and adversarial propagation through distributed inference. We also examine security utility operating envelopes that capture tradeoffs among semantic fidelity, robustness, latency, and energy under realistic constraints, survey evaluation frameworks and representative applications, and identify open challenges in cross-layer composition and deployment-time certification. Overall, this survey offers a unified system-level perspective that enables readers to understand major threat and defense mechanisms in AI-native SemCom systems and to leverage emerging security techniques in the design and deployment of robust SemCom architectures for next-generation intelligent networks.

QoE-Driven Multi-Task Offloading for Semantic-Aware Edge Computing Systems

Mobile edge computing (MEC) provides low-latency offloading solutions for computationally intensive tasks, effectively improving the computing efficiency and battery life of mobile devices. However, for data-intensive tasks or scenarios with limited uplink bandwidth, network congestion might occur due to massive simultaneous offloading nodes, increasing transmission latency and affecting task performance. In this paper, we propose a semantic-aware multi-modal task offloading framework to address the challenges posed by limited uplink bandwidth. By introducing a semantic extraction factor, we balance the relationship among transmission latency, computation energy consumption, and task performance. To measure the offloading performance of multi-modal tasks, we design a unified and fair quality of experience (QoE) metric that includes execution latency, energy consumption, and task performance. Lastly, we formulate the optimization problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and exploit the multi-agent proximal policy optimization (MAPPO) reinforcement learning algorithm to jointly optimize the semantic extraction factor, communication resources, and computing resources to maximize overall QoE. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a reduction in execution latency and energy consumption of 18.1% and 12.9%, respectively compared with the semantic-unaware approach. Moreover, the proposed approach can be easily extended to models with different user preferences.

The Syntactic-Semantic Internet:Engineering Infrastructures for Autonomous Systems

The Internet has evolved through successive architectural abstractions that enabled unprecedented scale, interoperability, and innovation. Packet-based networking enabled the reliable transport of bits; cloud-native systems enabled the orchestration of distributed computation. Today, the emergence of autonomous, learning-based systems introduces a new architectural challenge: intelligence is increasingly embedded directly into network control, computation, and decision-making, yet the Internet lacks a structural foundation for representing and exchanging meaning. In this paper, we argue that cognition alone: pattern recognition, prediction, and optimization, is insufficient for the next generation of networked systems. As autonomous agents act across safety-critical and socio-technical domains, systems must not only compute and communicate, but also comprehend intent, context, and consequence. We introduce the concept of a Semantic Layer: a new architectural stratum that treats meaning as a first-class construct, enabling interpretive alignment, semantic accountability, and intelligible autonomous behavior. We show that this evolution leads naturally to a Syntactic-Semantic Internet. The syntactic stack continues to transport bits, packets, and workloads with speed and reliability, while a parallel semantic stack transports meaning, grounding, and consequence. We describe the structure of this semantic stack-semantic communication, a semantic substrate, and an emerging Agentic Web, and draw explicit architectural parallels to TCP/IP and the World Wide Web. Finally, we examine current industry efforts, identify critical architectural gaps, and outline the engineering challenges required to make semantic interoperability a global, interoperable infrastructure.

A Survey on Semantic Communication for Vision: Categories, Frameworks, Enabling Techniques, and Applications

Semantic communication (SemCom) emerges as a transformative paradigm for traffic-intensive visual data transmission, shifting focus from raw data to meaningful content transmission and relieving the increasing pressure on communication resources. However, to achieve SemCom, challenges are faced in accurate semantic quantization for visual data, robust semantic extraction and reconstruction under diverse tasks and goals, transceiver coordination with effective knowledge utilization, and adaptation to unpredictable wireless communication environments. In this paper, we present a systematic review of SemCom for visual data transmission (SemCom-Vision), wherein an interdisciplinary analysis integrating computer vision (CV) and communication engineering is conducted to provide comprehensive guidelines for the machine learning (ML)-empowered SemCom-Vision design. Specifically, this survey first elucidates the basics and key concepts of SemCom. Then, we introduce a novel classification perspective to categorize existing SemCom-Vision approaches as semantic preservation communication (SPC), semantic expansion communication (SEC), and semantic refinement communication (SRC) based on communication goals interpreted through semantic quantization schemes. Moreover, this survey articulates the ML-based encoder-decoder models and training algorithms for each SemCom-Vision category, followed by knowledge structure and utilization strategies. Finally, we discuss potential SemCom-Vision applications.

Adaptive Semantic Communication for UAV/UGV Cooperative Path Planning

Effective path planning is fundamental to the coordination of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) systems, particularly in applications such as surveillance, navigation, and emergency response. Combining UAVs' broad field of view with UGVs' ground-level operational capability greatly improve the likelihood of successfully achieving task objectives such as locating victims, monitoring target areas, or navigating hazardous terrain. In complex environments, UAVs need to provide precise environmental perception information for UGVs to optimize their routing policy. However, due to severe interference and non-line-of-sight conditions, wireless communication is often unstable in such complex environments, making it difficult to support timely and accurate path planning for UAV-UGV coordination. To this end, this paper proposes a semantic communication (SemCom) framework to enhance UAV/UGV cooperative path planning under unreliable wireless conditions. Unlike traditional methods that transmit raw data, SemCom transmits only the key information for path planning, reducing transmission volume without sacrificing accuracy. The proposed framework is developed by defining key semantics for path planning and designing a transceiver for meeting the requirements of UAV-UGV cooperative path planning. Simulation results show that, compared to conventional SemCom transceivers, the proposed transceiver significantly reduces data transmission volume while maintaining path planning accuracy, thereby enhancing system collaboration efficiency.

Dynamic Control Aware Semantic Communication Enabled Image Transmission for Lunar Landing

The primary challenge in autonomous lunar landing missions lies in the unreliable local control system, which has limited capacity to handle high-dynamic conditions, severely affecting landing precision and safety. Recent advancements in lunar satellite communication make it possible to establish a wireless link between lunar orbit satellites and the lunar lander. This enables satellites to run high-performance autonomous landing algorithms, improving landing accuracy while reducing the lander's computational and storage load. Nevertheless, traditional communication paradigms are not directly applicable due to significant temperature fluctuations on the lunar surface, intense solar radiation, and severe interference caused by lunar dust on hardware. The emerging technique of semantic communication (SemCom) offers significant advantages in robustness and resource efficiency, particularly under harsh channel conditions. In this paper, we introduce a novel SemCom framework for transmitting images from the lander to satellites operating the remote landing control system. The proposed encoder-decoder dynamically adjusts the transmission strategy based on real-time feedback from the lander's control algorithm, ensuring the accurate delivery of critical image features and enhancing control reliability. We provide a rigorous theoretical analysis of the conditions that improve the accuracy of the control algorithm and reduce end-to-end transmission time under the proposed framework. Simulation results demonstrate that our SemCom method significantly enhances autonomous landing performance compared to traditional communication methods.

Inverse obstacle scattering with a single moving emitter

This paper is concerned with time domain forward scattering and inverse scattering problems with a single moving point source as the emitter. Approximate solutions are provided for the forward scattering problem with a moving emitter. Regarding the inverse problem, in addition to a basic indicator function based on the approximate solutions, a novel indicator function is developed to construct the direct sampling method to recover both point-like and extended scatterers. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are effective in reconstructing both two-dimensional and three-dimensional scatterers with a single moving emitter.

A Unified Learning-based Optimization Framework for 0-1 Mixed Problems in Wireless Networks

Several wireless networking problems are often posed as 0-1 mixed optimization problems, which involve binary variables (e.g., selection of access points, channels, and tasks) and continuous variables (e.g., allocation of bandwidth, power, and computing resources). Traditional optimization methods as well as reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms have been widely exploited to solve these problems under different network scenarios. However, solving such problems becomes more challenging when dealing with a large network scale, multi-dimensional radio resources, and diversified service requirements. To this end, in this paper, a unified framework that combines RL and optimization theory is proposed to solve 0-1 mixed optimization problems in wireless networks. First, RL is used to capture the process of solving binary variables as a sequential decision-making task. During the decision-making steps, the binary (0-1) variables are relaxed and, then, a relaxed problem is solved to obtain a relaxed solution, which serves as prior information to guide RL searching policy. Then, at the end of decision-making process, the search policy is updated via suboptimal objective value based on decisions made. The performance bound and convergence guarantees of the proposed framework are then proven theoretically. An extension of this approach is provided to solve problems with a non-convex objective function and/or non-convex constraints. Numerical results show that the proposed approach reduces the convergence time by about 30% over B&B in small-scale problems with slightly higher objective values. In large-scale scenarios, it can improve the normalized objective values by 20% over RL with a shorter convergence time.

The uniqueness of reconstructing sources whose spatial support is a convex region is proved. Theoretical analyses are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed sampling method in reconstructing various types of sound sources. The proposed algorithm does not involve the time integral, exhibits high computational efficiency, and demonstrates strong noise resistance. Numerical experiments are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Joint Power and Spectrum Orchestration for D2D Semantic Communication Underlying Energy-Efficient Cellular Networks

Semantic communication (SemCom) has been recently deemed a promising next-generation wireless technique to enable efficient spectrum savings and information exchanges, thus naturally introducing a novel and practical network paradigm where cellular and device-to-device (D2D) SemCom approaches coexist. Nevertheless, the involved wireless resource management becomes complicated and challenging due to the unique semantic performance measurements and energy-consuming semantic coding mechanism. To this end, this paper jointly investigates power control and spectrum reuse problems for energy-efficient D2D SemCom cellular networks. Concretely, we first model the user preference-aware semantic triplet transmission and leverage a novel metric of semantic value to identify the semantic information importance conveyed in SemCom. Then, we define the additional power consumption from semantic encoding in conjunction with basic power amplifier dissipation to derive the overall system energy efficiency (semantic-value/Joule). Next, we formulate an energy efficiency maximization problem for joint power and spectrum allocation subject to several SemCom-related and practical constraints. Afterward, we propose an optimal resource management solution by employing the fractional-to-subtractive problem transformation and decomposition while developing a three-stage method with theoretical analysis of its optimality guarantee and computational complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the adequate performance superiority of our proposed solution compared with different benchmarks.

QoE Optimization for Semantic Self-Correcting Video Transmission in Multi-UAV Networks

Real-time unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) video streaming is essential for time-sensitive applications, including remote surveillance, emergency response, and environmental monitoring. However, it faces challenges such as limited bandwidth, latency fluctuations, and high packet loss. To address these issues, we propose a novel semantic self-correcting video transmission framework with ultra-fine bitrate granularity (SSCV-G). In SSCV-G, video frames are encoded into a compact semantic codebook space, and the transmitter adaptively sends a subset of semantic indices based on bandwidth availability, enabling fine-grained bitrate control for improved bandwidth efficiency. At the receiver, a spatio-temporal vision transformer (ST-ViT) performs multi-frame joint decoding to reconstruct dropped semantic indices by modeling intra- and inter-frame dependencies. To further improve performance under dynamic network conditions, we integrate a multi-user proximal policy optimization (MUPPO) reinforcement learning scheme that jointly optimizes communication resource allocation and semantic bitrate selection to maximize user Quality of Experience (QoE). Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed SSCV-G significantly outperforms state-of-the-art video codecs in coding efficiency, bandwidth adaptability, and packet loss robustness. Moreover, the proposed MUPPO-based QoE optimization consistently surpasses existing benchmarks.

Inverse problems for elastic wave from Partial Cauchy Data: Uniqueness and Co-inversion for Shape and Impedance Function

We consider an inverse problem for the elastic wave of simultaneously reconstructing the impedance and the geometric information of the bounded body that is occupied by a homogeneous and isotropic elastic medium from the measured Cauchy data. A two-stage reconstruction method is proposed to realize simultaneous reconstruction of multiple targets. In the first step, we restore the aperture information by utilizing the observed Cauchy data that is measured on an accessible part of the boundary. In the second step, we start with the boundary condition and propose a novel iterative method to simultaneously reconstruct the missing boundary and the impedance function. Theoretically, we establish the uniqueness result of the co-inversion problem based on analyzing the properties of the corresponding operators. An explicit derivative is computed for the iterative method. Numerical examples are presented to test the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Building Floor Number Estimation from Crowdsourced Street-Level Images: Munich Dataset and Baseline Method

Accurate information on the number of building floors, or above-ground storeys, is essential for household estimation, utility provision, risk assessment, evacuation planning, and energy modeling. Yet large-scale floor-count data are rarely available in cadastral and 3D city databases. This study proposes an end-to-end deep learning framework that infers floor numbers directly from unrestricted, crowdsourced street-level imagery, avoiding hand-crafted features and generalizing across diverse facade styles. To enable benchmarking, we release the Munich Building Floor Dataset, a public set of over 6800 geo-tagged images collected from Mapillary and targeted field photography, each paired with a verified storey label. On this dataset, the proposed classification-regression network attains 81.2% exact accuracy and predicts 97.9% of buildings within +/-1 floor. The method and dataset together offer a scalable route to enrich 3D city models with vertical information and lay a foundation for future work in urban informatics, remote sensing, and geographic information science. Source code and data will be released under an open license at https://github.com/ya0-sun/Munich-SVI-Floor-Benchmark.
