The $U(n)$ Gelfand-Zeitlin system as a tropical limit of Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphisms

We show that the Ginzburg-Weinstein diffeomorphism $\mathfrak{u}(n)^* \to U(n)^*$ of Alekseev-Meinrenken admits a scaling tropical limit on an open dense subset of $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$. The target of the limit map is a product $\mathcal{C} \times T$, where $\mathcal{C}$ is the interior of a cone, $T$ is a torus, and $\mathcal{C} \times T$ carries an integrable system with natural action-angle coordinates. The pull-back of these coordinates to $\mathfrak{u}(n)^*$ recovers the Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable system of Guillemin-Sternberg. As a by-product of our proof, we show that the Lagrangian tori of the Flaschka-Ratiu integrable system on the set of upper triangular matrices meet the set of totally positive matrices for sufficiently large action coordinates.

Poisson Structures and Potentials

We introduce a notion of weakly log-canonical Poisson structures on positive varieties with potentials. Such a Poisson structure is log-canonical up to terms dominated by the potential. To a compatible real form of a weakly log-canonical Poisson variety we assign an integrable system on the product of a certain real convex polyhedral cone (the tropicalization of the variety) and a compact torus. We apply this theory to the dual Poisson-Lie group $G^*$ of a simply-connected semisimple complex Lie group $G$. We define a positive structure and potential on $G^*$ and show that the natural Poisson-Lie structure on $G^*$ is weakly log-canonical with respect to this positive structure and potential. For $K \subset G$ the compact real form, we show that the real form $K^* \subset G^*$ is compatible and prove that the corresponding integrable system is defined on the product of the decorated string cone and the compact torus of dimension $\frac{1}{2}({\rm dim} \, G - {\rm rank} \, G)$.

Investigation of channel model for weakly coupled multicore fiber

We investigate the evolution of decorrelation bandwidth of inter core crosstalk (IC-XT) in homogeneous weakly coupled multicore fibers (WC-MCFs). The modified mode-coupled equations (MCEs) are numerically solved by combining the fourth order Runge-Kutta method and compound Simpson integral method. It can be theoretically and numerically observed that the decorrelation bandwidth of IC-XT decreases with transmission distance by fractional linear function. The evolution rule of IC-XT's decorrelation bandwidth is further confirmed by experiments, which can be used as an evaluation criterion for channel model. Finally, we propose a new channel model with the coupling matrix of IC-XT generated automatically by phase transfer function (PTF), which is in good agreement with the above evaluation criterion. We believe the proposed channel model can provide a good simulation platform for homogeneous WC-MCF based communication systems.

Learning Features from Co-occurrences: A Theoretical Analysis

Representing a word by its co-occurrences with other words in context is an effective way to capture the meaning of the word. However, the theory behind remains a challenge. In this work, taking the example of a word classification task, we give a theoretical analysis of the approaches that represent a word X by a function f(P(C|X)), where C is a context feature, P(C|X) is the conditional probability estimated from a text corpus, and the function f maps the co-occurrence measure to a prediction score. We investigate the impact of context feature C and the function f. We also explain the reasons why using the co-occurrences with multiple context features may be better than just using a single one. In addition, some of the results shed light on the theory of feature learning and machine learning in general.

Layer-dependent Electrocatalysis of MoS2 for Hydrogen Evolution

The quantitative correlation of the catalytic activity with microscopic structure of heterogeneous catalysts is a major challenge for the field of catalysis science. It requests synergistic capabilities to tailor the structure with atomic scale precision and to control the catalytic reaction to proceed through well-defined pathways. Here we leverage on the controlled growth of MoS2 atomically thin films to demonstrate that the catalytic activity of MoS2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction decreases by a factor of ~4.47 for the addition of every one more layer. Similar layer dependence is also found in edge-riched MoS2 pyramid platelets. This layer-dependent electrocatalysis can be correlated to the hopping of electrons in the vertical direction of MoS2 layers over an interlayer potential barrier, which is found to be 0.119V and consistent with theoretical calculations. Our results point out that increasing the hopping efficiency of electrons in the vertical direction is a key for the development of high-efficiency two-dimensional material catalysts.

Reference Distance Estimator

A theoretical study is presented for a simple linear classifier called reference distance estimator (RDE), which assigns the weight of each feature j as P(r|j)-P(r), where r is a reference feature relevant to the target class y. The analysis shows that if r performs better than random guess in predicting y and is conditionally independent with each feature j, the RDE will have the same classification performance as that from P(y|j)-P(y), a classifier trained with the gold standard y. Since the estimation of P(r|j)-P(r) does not require labeled data, under the assumption above, RDE trained with a large number of unlabeled examples would be close to that trained with infinite labeled examples. For the case the assumption does not hold, we theoretically analyze the factors that influence the closeness of the RDE to the perfect one under the assumption, and present an algorithm to select reference features and combine multiple RDEs from different reference features using both labeled and unlabeled data. The experimental results on 10 text classification tasks show that the semi-supervised learning method improves supervised methods using 5,000 labeled examples and 13 million unlabeled ones, and in many tasks, its performance is even close to a classifier trained with 13 million labeled examples. In addition, the bounds in the theorems provide good estimation of the classification performance and can be useful for new algorithm design.
