Vacancy Order and Physical Properties of a Ternary Compound Fe0.68Pd0.80Te with an {\alpha}-Fe1+xTe-Type Structure

We report the identification and characterization of a new compound Fe0.68Pd0.80Te with an {\alpha}-Fe1+xTe prototype structure. Different from the Fe-square net and minor occupancy of interstitial Fe-sites in Fe1+xTe, Fe0.68Pd0.80Te is featured by a Pdsquare net and near 68% occupancy of the corresponding interstitial Fe-sites. Furthermore, noncontact atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction provide evidence for the existence of a 3*3*3 Pd-vacancy order in this layered material. A spin-glass ground state below Tg 40 K is identified via magnetic characterization. Electrical transport measurements show that Fe0.68Pd0.80Te is a semiconductor with a very small band gap below 10 meV. It has weak negative magnetoresistance and holelike charge carriers below room temperature. Our results demonstrate its potentials for further exploring various quantum phenomena.

Sliding Ferroelectricity Driven Spin-Layertronics in Altermagnetic Multilayers

The synergy of ferroicity with altermagnetism offers a novel platform for designing multifunctional altermagnetic-spintronic device technology. In this work, we propose a mechanism to achieve nonvolatile electrical manipulation of spin and layer degrees of freedom in an altermagnetic bilayer via sliding ferroelectricity. Using first-principles calculations, we show that an interlayer translation can induce a switchable out-of-plane ferroelectric polarization in bilayer CuF2, which directly couples to and reverses the d-wave altermagnetic spin splitting. Notably, the altermangetic spin splitting is layer-locked, the sliding ferroelectricity-driven switching thus embodying a nonvolatile spin-layertronics functionality that couples spin-polarized transport and layer degree of freedom in a single platform. We show that in quadrilayer CuF2, four polarization states are identified which may offer multi-state logic device applications. These findings establish sliding ferroelectricity as a versatile tool for designing voltage-controlled, high-speed and energy-efficient spin-layertronic devices based on altermagnets.

Achieve equilibrium outside the contact angle hysteresis

It is common belief that the equilibrium contact angle, corresponding to the minimum system energy state, lies between advancing and receding contact angles. Here, we derive advancing and receding contact angles considering the micro contacting processes on ideal rough 2D surfaces. Equilibrium contact angles obtained via energy minimization can be smaller than the receding contact angle and reach 0 degrees, at which hysteresis diminishes on the super-hydrophilic surface. Gibbs free energy analyses, numerical simulations and physical experiments all confirm these new findings.
