Network Observability Transitions

In the modeling, monitoring, and control of complex networks, a fundamental problem concerns the comprehensive determination of the state of the system from limited measurements. Using power grids as example networks, we show that this problem leads to a new type of percolation transition, here termed a {\it network observability transition}, which we solve analytically for the configuration model. We also demonstrate a dual role of the network's community structure, which both facilitates optimal measurement placement and renders the networks substantially more sensitive to `observability attacks'. Aside from their immediate implications for the development of smart grids, these results provide insights into decentralized biological, social, and technological networks.

On the Minimum Energy of Sending Gaussian Multiterminal Sources over the Gaussian MAC

In this work, we investigate the minimum energy of transmitting correlated sources over the Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC). Compared to other works on joint source-channel coding, we consider the general scenario where the source and channel bandwidths are not naturally matched. In particular, we proposed the use of hybrid digital-analog coding over to improve the transmission energy efficiency. Different models of correlated sources are studied. We first consider lossless transmission of binary sources over the MAC. We then treat lossy transmission of Gaussian sources over the Gaussian MAC, including CEO sources and multiterminal sources. In all cases, we show that hybrid transmission achieves the best known energy efficiency.

Solid-liquid interfacial premelting

We report the observation of a premelting transition at chemically sharp solid-liquid interfaces using molecular-dynamics simulations. The transition is observed in the solid-Al/liquid-Pb system and involves the formation of a liquid interfacial film of Al with a width that grows logarithmically as the bulk melting temperature is approached from below, consistent with current theories of premelting. The premelting behavior leads to a sharp change in the temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient in the interfacial region, and could have important consequences for phenomena such as particle coalescence and shape equilibration, which are governed by interfacial kinetic processes.

Throughput of Rateless Codes over Broadcast Erasure Channels

In this paper, we characterize the throughput of a broadcast network with n receivers using rateless codes with block size K. We assume that the underlying channel is a Markov modulated erasure channel that is i.i.d. across users, but can be correlated in time. We characterize the system throughput asymptotically in n. Specifically, we explicitly show how the throughput behaves for different values of the coding block size K as a function of n, as n approaches infinity. For finite values of K and n, under the more restrictive assumption of Gilbert-Elliott channels, we are able to provide a lower bound on the maximum achievable throughput. Using simulations we show the tightness of the bound with respect to system parameters n and K, and find that its performance is significantly better than the previously known lower bounds.

Quantitative Photo-acoustic Tomography with Partial Data

Photo-acoustic tomography is a newly developed hybrid imaging modality that combines a high-resolution modality with a high-contrast modality. We analyze the reconstruction of diffusion and absorption parameters in an elliptic equation and improve an earlier result of Bal and Uhlmann to the partial date case. We show that the reconstruction can be uniquely determined by the knowledge of 4 internal data based on well-chosen partial boundary conditions. Stability of this reconstruction is ensured if a convexity condition is satisfied. Similar stability result is obtained without this geometric constraint if 4n well-chosen partial boundary conditions are available, where $n$ is the spatial dimension. The set of well-chosen boundary measurements is characterized by some complex geometric optics (CGO) solutions vanishing on a part of the boundary.

Field test of the wavelength-saving quantum key distribution network

We propose a wavelength-saving topology of quantum key distribution(QKD) network based on passive optical elements, and report the field test of this network on the commercial telecom optical fiber. In this network, 5 nodes are supported with 2 wavelengths, and every two nodes can share secure keys directly at the same time. All QKD links in the network operate at the frequency of 20 MHz. We also characterized the insertion loss and crosstalk effects on the point-to-point QKD system after introducing this QKD network.

An imputation method for estimating the learning curve in classification problems

The learning curve expresses the error rate of a predictive modeling procedure as a function of the sample size of the training dataset. It typically is a decreasing, convex function with a positive limiting value. An estimate of the learning curve can be used to assess whether a modeling procedure should be expected to become substantially more accurate if additional training data become available. This article proposes a new procedure for estimating learning curves using imputation. We focus on classification, although the idea is applicable to other predictive modeling settings. Simulation studies indicate that the learning curve can be estimated with useful accuracy for a roughly four-fold increase in the size of the training set relative to the available data, and that the proposed imputation approach outperforms an alternative estimation approach based on parameterizing the learning curve. We illustrate the method with an application that predicts the risk of disease progression for people with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Exact Eigenfunctions of $N$-Body system with Quadratic Pair Potential

We obtain all the exact eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenfunctions of $N$-body Bose and Fermi systems with Quadratic Pair Potentials in one dimension. The originally existed first excited state level is missing in one dimension, which results from the operation of symmetry or antisymmetry of identical particles. In two and higher dimensions, we give all the eigenvalues and the analytical ground state wave functions and the number of degeneracy. Through the comparison with Avinash Khare's results, we have perfected his results.

Delay Asymptotics with Retransmissions and Incremental Redundancy Codes over Erasure Channels

Recent studies have shown that retransmissions can cause heavy-tailed transmission delays even when packet sizes are light-tailed. Moreover, the impact of heavy-tailed delays persists even when packets size are upper bounded. The key question we study in this paper is how the use of coding techniques to transmit information, together with different system configurations, would affect the distribution of delay. To investigate this problem, we model the underlying channel as a Markov modulated binary erasure channel, where transmitted bits are either received successfully or erased. Erasure codes are used to encode information prior to transmission, which ensures that a fixed fraction of the bits in the codeword can lead to successful decoding. We use incremental redundancy codes, where the codeword is divided into codeword trunks and these trunks are transmitted one at a time to provide incremental redundancies to the receiver until the information is recovered. We characterize the distribution of delay under two different scenarios: (I) Decoder uses memory to cache all previously successfully received bits. (II) Decoder does not use memory, where received bits are discarded if the corresponding information cannot be decoded. In both cases, we consider codeword length with infinite and finite support. From a theoretical perspective, our results provide a benchmark to quantify the tradeoff between system complexity and the distribution of delay.

Effect of Dust on Lyman-alpha Photon Transfer in Optically Thick Halo

We investigate the effects of dust on Lyα photons emergent from an optically thick medium by solving the integro-differential equation of the radiative transfer of resonant photons. To solve the differential equations numerically we use the Weighted Essentially Non-oscillatory method (WENO). Although the effects of dust on radia-tive transfer is well known, the resonant scattering of Lyα photons makes the problem non-trivial. For instance, if the medium has the optical depth of dust absorption and scattering to be τa>>1, τ>>1, and τ>>τa, the effective absorption optical depth in a random walk scenario would be equal to \surd τa(τa+τ). We show, however, that for a resonant scattering at frequency ν0, the effective absorption optical depth would be even larger than τ(ν0). If the cross section of dust scattering and absorption is frequency-independent, the double-peaked structure of the frequency profile given by the resonant scattering is basically dust-independent. That is, dust causes neither narrowing nor widening of the width of the double peaked profile. One more result is that the time scales of the Lyα photon transfer in the optically thick halo are also basically independent of the dust scattering, even when the scattering is anisotropic. This is because those time scales are mainly determined by the transfer in the frequency space, while dust scattering, either isotropic or anisotropic, does not affect the behavior of the transfer in the frequency space when the cross section of scattering is wavelength-independent. This result does not support the speculation that dust will lead to the smoothing of the brightness distribution of Lyα photon source with optical thick halo.

Large Zero Autocorrelation Zone of Golay Sequences and $4^q$-QAM Golay Complementary Sequences

Sequences with good correlation properties have been widely adopted in modern communications, radar and sonar applications. In this paper, we present our new findings on some constructions of single $H$-ary Golay sequence and $4^q$-QAM Golay complementary sequence with a large zero autocorrelation zone, where $H\ge 2$ is an arbitrary even integer and $q\ge 2$ is an arbitrary integer. Those new results on Golay sequences and QAM Golay complementary sequences can be explored during synchronization and detection at the receiver end and thus improve the performance of the communication system.

Coulomb Oscillations of Indium-doped ZnO Nanowire Transistors in a Magnetic Field

We report on the observation of Coulomb oscillations from localized quantum dots superimposed on the normal hopping current in ZnO nanowire transistors. The Coulomb oscillations can be resolved up to 20 K. Positive anisotropic magnetoresistance has been observed due to the Lorentz force on the carrier motion. Magnetic field-induced tunneling barrier transparency results in an increase of oscillation amplitude with increasing magnetic field. The energy shift as a function of magnetic field indicates electron wavefunction modification in the quantum dots.

A new sufficient condition for sum-rate tightness in quadratic Gaussian multiterminal source coding

This work considers the quadratic Gaussian multiterminal (MT) source coding problem and provides a new sufficient condition for the Berger-Tung sum-rate bound to be tight. The converse proof utilizes a set of virtual remote sources given which the MT sources are block independent with a maximum block size of two. The given MT source coding problem is then related to a set of two-terminal problems with matrix-distortion constraints, for which a new lower bound on the sum-rate is given. Finally, a convex optimization problem is formulated and a sufficient condition derived for the optimal BT scheme to satisfy the subgradient based Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition. The set of sum-rate tightness problems defined by our new sufficient condition subsumes all previously known tight cases, and opens new direction for a more general partial solution.

Morphology Characterization of Argon-Mediated Epitaxial Graphene on C-face SiC

Epitaxial graphene layers were grown on the C-face of 4H- and 6H-SiC using an argon-mediated growth process. Variations in growth temperature and pressure were found to dramatically affect the morphological properties of the layers. The presence of argon during growth slowed the rate of graphene formation on the C-face and led to the observation of islanding. The similarity in the morphology of the islands and continuous films indicated that island nucleation and coalescence is the growth mechanism for C-face graphene.

A Bayesian framework for estimating vaccine efficacy per infectious contact

In vaccine studies for infectious diseases such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the frequency and type of contacts between study participants and infectious sources are among the most informative risk factors, but are often not adequately adjusted for in standard analyses. Such adjustment can improve the assessment of vaccine efficacy as well as the assessment of risk factors. It can be attained by modeling transmission per contact with infectious sources. However, information about contacts that rely on self-reporting by study participants are subject to nontrivial measurement error in many studies. We develop a Bayesian hierarchical model fitted using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling to estimate the vaccine efficacy controlled for exposure to infection, while adjusting for measurement error in contact-related factors. Our method is used to re-analyze two recent HIV vaccine studies, and the results are compared with the published primary analyses that used standard methods. The proposed method could also be used for other vaccines where contact information is collected, such as human papilloma virus vaccines.

Matrix rearrangement approach for the entangling power with mixed qudit systems

We extend the former matrix rearrangement approach of the entangling power to the general cases, without the requirement of the same dimensions of the subsystems. The entangling power of a unitary operator is completely determined by its realignment and partial transposition. As applications, we calculate the entangling power for the Ising interaction and the isotropic Heisenberg interaction in the mixed qudit system.
