Terahertz hyperspectral imaging with dual chip-scale combs

Hyperspectral imaging is a technique that allows for the creation of multi-color images. At terahertz wavelengths, it has emerged as a prominent tool for a number of applications, ranging from non-ionizing cancer diagnosis and pharmaceutical characterization to non-destructive artifact testing. Contemporary terahertz imaging systems typically rely on non-linear optical down-conversion of a fiber-based near-infrared femtosecond laser, requiring complex optical systems. Here, we demonstrate hyperspectral imaging with chip-scale frequency combs based on terahertz quantum cascade lasers. The dual combs are free-running and emit coherent terahertz radiation that covers a bandwidth of 220 GHz at 3.4 THz with ~10 μW per line. The combination of the fast acquisition rate of dual-comb spectroscopy with the monolithic design, scalability, and chip-scale size of the combs is highly appealing for future imaging applications in biomedicine and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Intraday forecasts of a volatility index: Functional time series methods with dynamic updating

As a forward-looking measure of future equity market volatility, the VIX index has gained immense popularity in recent years to become a key measure of risk for market analysts and academics. We consider discrete reported intraday VIX tick values as realisations of a collection of curves observed sequentially on equally spaced and dense grids over time and utilise functional data analysis techniques to produce one-day-ahead forecasts of these curves. The proposed method facilitates the investigation of dynamic changes in the index over very short time intervals as showcased using the 15-second high-frequency VIX index values. With the help of dynamic updating techniques, our point and interval forecasts are shown to enjoy improved accuracy over conventional time series models.

Electron effective mass and electronic structure in nonstoichiometric a-IGZO films

The transport properties and optical transmittance and absorption spectra for the nostoichiometric amorphous Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide (a-IGZO) films with Gallium and Zinc deficiencies are investigated. The resistivity and carrier concentration variation with temperature both reveal that the films possess degenerate semiconductor (or metal) characteristics. The thermopower is negative and decreases linearly with decreasing temperature, indicating the electron diffusion thermopower governs the thermal transport process in each film. Using free-electron-like model, we extracted the electron effective mass, which is about three times as large as that of the stoichiometric one and increases with increasing carrier (electron) concentration. Neglecting the variation in the energy with the wavevector near the valence band maximum and using the free-electron-like model, we also obtained the electron effective mass via the optical absorption spectra measurement. The magnitude of the effective mass obtained via optical spectra measurement is comparable to that obtained via thermopower measurement for each film. Our results strongly suggest that the nostoichiometric a-IGZO films possess free-electron-like pseudo-energy-bandstructure.

Automatic Grammar Augmentation for Robust Voice Command Recognition

This paper proposes a novel pipeline for automatic grammar augmentation that provides a significant improvement in the voice command recognition accuracy for systems with small footprint acoustic model (AM). The improvement is achieved by augmenting the user-defined voice command set, also called grammar set, with alternate grammar expressions. For a given grammar set, a set of potential grammar expressions (candidate set) for augmentation is constructed from an AM-specific statistical pronunciation dictionary that captures the consistent patterns and errors in the decoding of AM induced by variations in pronunciation, pitch, tempo, accent, ambiguous spellings, and noise conditions. Using this candidate set, greedy optimization based and cross-entropy-method (CEM) based algorithms are considered to search for an augmented grammar set with improved recognition accuracy utilizing a command-specific dataset. Our experiments show that the proposed pipeline along with algorithms considered in this paper significantly reduce the mis-detection and mis-classification rate without increasing the false-alarm rate. Experiments also demonstrate the consistent superior performance of CEM method over greedy-based algorithms.

Relation Mention Extraction from Noisy Data with Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning

In this paper we address a task of relation mention extraction from noisy data: extracting representative phrases for a particular relation from noisy sentences that are collected via distant supervision. Despite its significance and value in many downstream applications, this task is less studied on noisy data. The major challenges exists in 1) the lack of annotation on mention phrases, and more severely, 2) handling noisy sentences which do not express a relation at all. To address the two challenges, we formulate the task as a semi-Markov decision process and propose a novel hierarchical reinforcement learning model. Our model consists of a top-level sentence selector to remove noisy sentences, a low-level mention extractor to extract relation mentions, and a reward estimator to provide signals to guide data denoising and mention extraction without explicit annotations. Experimental results show that our model is effective to extract relation mentions from noisy data.

Existence results for non-local elliptic systems with Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical nonlinearities

In this article, we study the following nonlinear doubly nonlocal problem involving the fractional Laplacian in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{aligned} (-Δ)^s u & = au+bv+\frac{2p}{p+q}\int_Ω\frac{|v(y)|^q}{|x-y|^μ}dy|u|^{p-2}u+2ξ_1\int_Ω\frac{|u(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}dy|u|^{2^*_μ-2}u,&& \text{in } Ω;\\ (-Δ)^s v & = bu+cv+\frac{2q}{p+q}\int_Ω\frac{|u(y)|^p}{|x-y|^μ}dy|v|^{q-2}v+2ξ_2\int_Ω\frac{|v(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}dy|v|^{2^*_μ-2}v,&& \text{in } Ω;\\ u &=v=0,\text{ in } \R^N\setminusΩ, \end{aligned}\right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\R^N$, $N>2s$, $s\in(0,1)$, $ξ_1,ξ_2\geq 0$, $(-Δ)^s$ is the well known fractional Laplacian, $μ\in(0,N)$, $1<p,q\leq 2^*_μ$ where $2^*_μ=\frac{2N-μ}{N-2s}$ is the upper critical exponent in the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. Under suitable assumptions on different parameters $p, q, ξ_1,$ and $ ξ_2$, we are able to prove some existence and multiplicity results for the above equation by variational methods.

XJTLUIndoorLoc: A New Fingerprinting Database for Indoor Localization and Trajectory Estimation Based on Wi-Fi RSS and Geomagnetic Field

In this paper, we present a new location fingerprinting database comprised of Wi-Fi received signal strength (RSS) and geomagnetic field intensity measured with multiple devices at a multi-floor building in Xi'an Jiatong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China. We also provide preliminary results of localization and trajectory estimation based on convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) network with this database. For localization, we map RSS data for a reference point to an image-like, two-dimensional array and then apply CNN which is popular in image and video analysis and recognition. For trajectory estimation, we use a modified random way point model to efficiently generate continuous step traces imitating human walking and train a stacked two-layer LSTM network with the generated data to remember the changing pattern of geomagnetic field intensity against (x,y) coordinates. Experimental results demonstrate the usefulness of our new database and the feasibility of the CNN and LSTM-based localization and trajectory estimation with the database.

Hopping conductance and macroscopic quantum tunneling effect in three dimensional Pb$_x$(SiO$_2$)$_{1-x}$ nanogranular films

We have studied the low-temperature electrical transport properties of Pb$_x$(SiO$_2$)$_{1-x}$ ($x$ being the Pb volume fraction) nanogranular films with thicknesses of $\sim$1000 nm and $x$ spanning the dielectric, transitional, and metallic regions. It is found that the percolation threshold $x_c$ lies between 0.57 and 0.60. For films with $x$$\lesssim$0.50, the resistivities $ρ$ as functions of temperature $T$ obey $ρ\propto\exp(Δ/k_BT)$ relation ($Δ$ being the local superconducting gap and the $k_B$ Boltzmann constant) below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ ($\sim$7 K) of Pb granules. The value of the gap obtained via this expression is almost identical to that by single electron tunneling spectra measurement. The magnetoresistance is negative below $T_c$ and its absolute value is far larger than that above $T_c$ at a certain field. These observations indicate that single electron hopping (or tunneling), rather than Cooper pair hopping (or tunneling) governs the transport processes below $T_c$. The temperature dependence of resistivities shows reentrant behavior for the 0.50$<$$x$$<$0.57 films. It is found that single electron hopping (or tunneling) also dominates the low-temperature transport process for these films. The reduction of the single electron concentration leads to an enhancement of the resisivity at sufficiently low temperature. For the 0.60$\lesssim$$x$$\lesssim$0.72 films, the resistivities sharply decrease with decreasing temperature just below $T_c$, and then show dissipation effect with further decreasing temperature. Treating the conducting paths composed of Pb particles as nanowires, we have found that the $R(T)$ data below $T_c$ can be well explained by a model that includes both thermally activated phase slips and quantum phase slips.

FingerVision Tactile Sensor Design and Slip Detection Using Convolutional LSTM Network

Tactile sensing is essential to the human perception system, so as to robot. In this paper, we develop a novel optical-based tactile sensor "FingerVision" with effective signal processing algorithms. This sensor is composed of soft skin with embedded marker array bonded to rigid frame, and a web camera with a fisheye lens. While being excited with contact force, the camera tracks the movements of markers and deformation field is obtained. Compared to existing tactile sensors, our sensor features compact footprint, high resolution, and ease of fabrication. Besides, utilizing the deformation field estimation, we propose a slip classification framework based on convolution Long Short Term Memory (convolutional LSTM) networks. The data collection process takes advantage of the human sense of slip, during which human hand holds 12 daily objects, interacts with sensor skin and labels data with a slip or non-slip identity based on human feeling of slip. Our slip classification framework performs high accuracy of 97.62% on the test dataset. It is expected to be capable of enhancing the stability of robot grasping significantly, leading to better contact force control, finer object interaction and more active sensing manipulation.

Look Across Elapse: Disentangled Representation Learning and Photorealistic Cross-Age Face Synthesis for Age-Invariant Face Recognition

Despite the remarkable progress in face recognition related technologies, reliably recognizing faces across ages still remains a big challenge. The appearance of a human face changes substantially over time, resulting in significant intra-class variations. As opposed to current techniques for age-invariant face recognition, which either directly extract age-invariant features for recognition, or first synthesize a face that matches target age before feature extraction, we argue that it is more desirable to perform both tasks jointly so that they can leverage each other. To this end, we propose a deep Age-Invariant Model (AIM) for face recognition in the wild with three distinct novelties. First, AIM presents a novel unified deep architecture jointly performing cross-age face synthesis and recognition in a mutual boosting way. Second, AIM achieves continuous face rejuvenation/aging with remarkable photorealistic and identity-preserving properties, avoiding the requirement of paired data and the true age of testing samples. Third, we develop effective and novel training strategies for end-to-end learning the whole deep architecture, which generates powerful age-invariant face representations explicitly disentangled from the age variation. Moreover, we propose a new large-scale Cross-Age Face Recognition (CAFR) benchmark dataset to facilitate existing efforts and push the frontiers of age-invariant face recognition research. Extensive experiments on both our CAFR and several other cross-age datasets (MORPH, CACD and FG-NET) demonstrate the superiority of the proposed AIM model over the state-of-the-arts. Benchmarking our model on one of the most popular unconstrained face recognition datasets IJB-C additionally verifies the promising generalizability of AIM in recognizing faces in the wild.

Accurate molecular polarizabilities with coupled-cluster theory and machine learning

The molecular polarizability describes the tendency of a molecule to deform or polarize in response to an applied electric field. As such, this quantity governs key intra- and inter-molecular interactions such as induction and dispersion, plays a key role in determining the spectroscopic signatures of molecules, and is an essential ingredient in polarizable force fields and other empirical models for collective interactions. Compared to other ground-state properties, an accurate and reliable prediction of the molecular polarizability is considerably more difficult as this response quantity is quite sensitive to the description of the underlying molecular electronic structure. In this work, we present state-of-the-art quantum mechanical calculations of the static dipole polarizability tensors of 7,211 small organic molecules computed using linear-response coupled-cluster singles and doubles theory (LR-CCSD). Using a symmetry-adapted machine-learning based approach, we demonstrate that it is possible to predict the molecular polarizability with LR-CCSD accuracy at a negligible computational cost. The employed model is quite robust and transferable, yielding molecular polarizabilities for a diverse set of 52 larger molecules (which includes challenging conjugated systems, carbohydrates, small drugs, amino acids, nucleobases, and hydrocarbon isomers) at an accuracy that exceeds that of hybrid density functional theory (DFT). The atom-centered decomposition implicit in our machine-learning approach offers some insight into the shortcomings of DFT in the prediction of this fundamental quantity of interest.

GB-KMV: An Augmented KMV Sketch for Approximate Containment Similarity Search

In this paper, we study the problem of approximate containment similarity search. Given two records Q and X, the containment similarity between Q and X with respect to Q is |Q intersect X|/ |Q|. Given a query record Q and a set of records S, the containment similarity search finds a set of records from S whose containment similarity regarding Q are not less than the given threshold. This problem has many important applications in commercial and scientific fields such as record matching and domain search. Existing solution relies on the asymmetric LSH method by transforming the containment similarity to well-studied Jaccard similarity. In this paper, we use a different framework by transforming the containment similarity to set intersection. We propose a novel augmented KMV sketch technique, namely GB-KMV, which is data-dependent and can achieve a good trade-off between the sketch size and the accuracy. We provide a set of theoretical analysis to underpin the proposed augmented KMV sketch technique, and show that it outperforms the state-of-the-art technique LSH-E in terms of estimation accuracy under practical assumption. Our comprehensive experiments on real-life datasets verify that GB-KMV is superior to LSH-E in terms of the space-accuracy trade-off, time-accuracy trade-off, and the sketch construction time. For instance, with similar estimation accuracy (F-1 score), GB-KMV is over 100 times faster than LSH-E on some real-life dataset.

Reinforcement Learning for Relation Classification from Noisy Data

Existing relation classification methods that rely on distant supervision assume that a bag of sentences mentioning an entity pair are all describing a relation for the entity pair. Such methods, performing classification at the bag level, cannot identify the mapping between a relation and a sentence, and largely suffers from the noisy labeling problem. In this paper, we propose a novel model for relation classification at the sentence level from noisy data. The model has two modules: an instance selector and a relation classifier. The instance selector chooses high-quality sentences with reinforcement learning and feeds the selected sentences into the relation classifier, and the relation classifier makes sentence level prediction and provides rewards to the instance selector. The two modules are trained jointly to optimize the instance selection and relation classification processes. Experiment results show that our model can deal with the noise of data effectively and obtains better performance for relation classification at the sentence level.

Coarse-to-Fine Annotation Enrichment for Semantic Segmentation Learning

Rich high-quality annotated data is critical for semantic segmentation learning, yet acquiring dense and pixel-wise ground-truth is both labor- and time-consuming. Coarse annotations (e.g., scribbles, coarse polygons) offer an economical alternative, with which training phase could hardly generate satisfactory performance unfortunately. In order to generate high-quality annotated data with a low time cost for accurate segmentation, in this paper, we propose a novel annotation enrichment strategy, which expands existing coarse annotations of training data to a finer scale. Extensive experiments on the Cityscapes and PASCAL VOC 2012 benchmarks have shown that the neural networks trained with the enriched annotations from our framework yield a significant improvement over that trained with the original coarse labels. It is highly competitive to the performance obtained by using human annotated dense annotations. The proposed method also outperforms among other state-of-the-art weakly-supervised segmentation methods.

Boosting Cooperative Coevolution for Large Scale Optimization with a Fine-Grained Computation Resource Allocation Strategy

Cooperative coevolution (CC) has shown great potential in solving large scale optimization problems (LSOPs). However, traditional CC algorithms often waste part of computation resource (CR) as they equally allocate CR among all the subproblems. The recently developed contribution-based CC (CBCC) algorithms improve the traditional ones to a certain extent by adaptively allocating CR according to some heuristic rules. Different from existing works, this study explicitly constructs a mathematical model for the CR allocation (CRA) problem in CC and proposes a novel fine-grained CRA (FCRA) strategy by fully considering both the theoretically optimal solution of the CRA model and the evolution characteristics of CC. FCRA takes a single iteration as a basic CRA unit and always selects the subproblem which is most likely to make the largest contribution to the total fitness improvement to undergo a new iteration, where the contribution of a subproblem at a new iteration is estimated according to its current contribution, current evolution status as well as the estimation for its current contribution. We verified the efficiency of FCRA by combining it with SHADE which is an excellent differential evolution variant but has never been employed in the CC framework. Experimental results on two benchmark suites for LSOPs demonstrate that FCRA significantly outperforms existing CRA strategies and the resultant CC algorithm is highly competitive in solving LSOPs.

Accurate Energy-Efficient Power Control for Uplink NOMA Systems under Delay Constraint

Machine-type communications (MTC) devices in 5G will use the Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology for massive connections. These devices switch between the transmission mode and the sleep mode for battery saving; and their applications may have diverse quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we develop a new uplink energy-efficient power control scheme for multiple MTC devices with the above mode transition capability and different QoS requirements. By using the effective bandwidth and the effective capacity models, the system's energy efficiency can be formulated as the ratio of the sum effective capacity to the sum energy consumption. Two new analytical models are used in system's energy efficiency maximization problem: 1) two-mode circuitry model and 2) accurate delay-outage approximation model. Simulation shows our proposed scheme is capable of providing exact delay QoS guarantees for NOMA systems.

Successive Convex Approximation Algorithms for Sparse Signal Estimation with Nonconvex Regularizations

In this paper, we propose a successive convex approximation framework for sparse optimization where the nonsmooth regularization function in the objective function is nonconvex and it can be written as the difference of two convex functions. The proposed framework is based on a nontrivial combination of the majorization-minimization framework and the successive convex approximation framework proposed in literature for a convex regularization function. The proposed framework has several attractive features, namely, i) flexibility, as different choices of the approximate function lead to different type of algorithms; ii) fast convergence, as the problem structure can be better exploited by a proper choice of the approximate function and the stepsize is calculated by the line search; iii) low complexity, as the approximate function is convex and the line search scheme is carried out over a differentiable function; iv) guaranteed convergence to a stationary point. We demonstrate these features by two example applications in subspace learning, namely, the network anomaly detection problem and the sparse subspace clustering problem. Customizing the proposed framework by adopting the best-response type approximation, we obtain soft-thresholding with exact line search algorithms for which all elements of the unknown parameter are updated in parallel according to closed-form expressions. The attractive features of the proposed algorithms are illustrated numerically.

StegNet: Mega Image Steganography Capacity with Deep Convolutional Network

Traditional image steganography often leans interests towards safely embedding hidden information into cover images with payload capacity almost neglected. This paper combines recent deep convolutional neural network methods with image-into-image steganography. It successfully hides the same size images with a decoding rate of 98.2% or bpp (bits per pixel) of 23.57 by changing only 0.76% of the cover image on average. Our method directly learns end-to-end mappings between the cover image and the embedded image and between the hidden image and the decoded image. We~further show that our embedded image, while with mega payload capacity, is still robust to statistical analysis.
