Android HIV: A Study of Repackaging Malware for Evading Machine-Learning Detection

Machine learning based solutions have been successfully employed for automatic detection of malware on Android. However, machine learning models lack robustness to adversarial examples, which are crafted by adding carefully chosen perturbations to the normal inputs. So far, the adversarial examples can only deceive detectors that rely on syntactic features (e.g., requested permissions, API calls, etc), and the perturbations can only be implemented by simply modifying application's manifest. While recent Android malware detectors rely more on semantic features from Dalvik bytecode rather than manifest, existing attacking/defending methods are no longer effective. In this paper, we introduce a new attacking method that generates adversarial examples of Android malware and evades being detected by the current models. To this end, we propose a method of applying optimal perturbations onto Android APK that can successfully deceive the machine learning detectors. We develop an automated tool to generate the adversarial examples without human intervention. In contrast to existing works, the adversarial examples crafted by our method can also deceive recent machine learning based detectors that rely on semantic features such as control-flow-graph. The perturbations can also be implemented directly onto APK's Dalvik bytecode rather than Android manifest to evade from recent detectors. We demonstrate our attack on two state-of-the-art Android malware detection schemes, MaMaDroid and Drebin. Our results show that the malware detection rates decreased from 96% to 0% in MaMaDroid, and from 97% to 0% in Drebin, with just a small number of codes to be inserted into the APK.

Machine Learning Based Cyber Attacks Targeting on Controlled Information: A Survey

Stealing attack against controlled information, along with the increasing number of information leakage incidents, has become an emerging cyber security threat in recent years. Due to the booming development and deployment of advanced analytics solutions, novel stealing attacks utilize machine learning (ML) algorithms to achieve high success rate and cause a lot of damage. Detecting and defending against such attacks is challenging and urgent so that governments, organizations, and individuals should attach great importance to the ML-based stealing attacks. This survey presents the recent advances in this new type of attack and corresponding countermeasures. The ML-based stealing attack is reviewed in perspectives of three categories of targeted controlled information, including controlled user activities, controlled ML model-related information, and controlled authentication information. Recent publications are summarized to generalize an overarching attack methodology and to derive the limitations and future directions of ML-based stealing attacks. Furthermore, countermeasures are proposed towards developing effective protections from three aspects -- detection, disruption, and isolation.

Machine Learning for Multimodal Electronic Health Records-based Research: Challenges and Perspectives

Background: Electronic Health Records (EHRs) contain rich information of patients' health history, which usually include both structured and unstructured data. There have been many studies focusing on distilling valuable information from structured data, such as disease codes, laboratory test results, and treatments. However, relying on structured data only might be insufficient in reflecting patients' comprehensive information and such data may occasionally contain erroneous records. Objective: With the recent advances of machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques, an increasing number of studies seek to obtain more accurate results by incorporating unstructured free-text data as well. This paper reviews studies that use multimodal data, i.e. a combination of structured and unstructured data, from EHRs as input for conventional ML or DL models to address the targeted tasks. Materials and Methods: We searched in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Digital Library, PubMed, and Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Digital Library for articles related to ML-based multimodal EHR studies. Results and Discussion: With the final 94 included studies, we focus on how data from different modalities were combined and interacted using conventional ML and DL techniques, and how these algorithms were applied in EHR-related tasks. Further, we investigate the advantages and limitations of these fusion methods and indicate future directions for ML-based multimodal EHR research.

Continuum Model and Numerical Method for Dislocation Structure and Energy of Grain Boundaries

We present a continuum model to determine the dislocation structure and energy of low angle grain boundaries in three dimensions. The equilibrium dislocation structure is obtained by minimizing the grain boundary energy that is associated with the constituent dislocations subject to the constraint of Frank's formula. The orientation-dependent continuous distributions of dislocation lines on grain boundaries are described conveniently using the dislocation density potential functions, whose contour lines on the grain boundaries represent the dislocations. The energy of a grain boundary is the total energy of the constituent dislocations derived from discrete dislocation dynamics model, incorporating both the dislocation line energy and reactions of dislocations. The constrained energy minimization problem is solved by the augmented Lagrangian method and projection method. Comparisons with atomistic simulation results show that our continuum model is able to give excellent predictions of the energy and dislocation densities of both planar and curved low angle grain boundaries.

A Three-Dimensional Continuum Simulation Method for Grain Boundary Motion Incorporating Dislocation Structure

We develop a continuum model for the dynamics of grain boundaries in three dimensions that incorporates the motion and reaction of the constituent dislocations. The continuum model is based on a simple representation of densities of curved dislocations on the grain boundary. Illposedness due to nonconvexity of the total energy is fixed by a numerical treatment based on a projection method that maintains the connectivity of the constituent dislocations. An efficient simulation method is developed, in which the critical but computationally expensive long-range interaction of dislocations is replaced by another projection formulation that maintains the constraint of equilibrium of the dislocation structure described by the Frank's formula. This continuum model is able to describe the grain boundary motion and grain rotation due to both coupling and sliding effects, to which the classical motion by mean curvature model does not apply. Comparisons with atomistic simulation results show that our continuum model is able to give excellent predictions of evolutions of low angle grain boundaries and their dislocation structures.

Capturing Dynamics of Information Diffusion in SNS: A Survey of Methodology and Techniques

Studying information diffusion in SNS (Social Networks Service) has remarkable significance in both academia and industry. Theoretically, it boosts the development of other subjects such as statistics, sociology, and data mining. Practically, diffusion modeling provides fundamental support for many downstream applications (\textit{e.g.}, public opinion monitoring, rumor source identification, and viral marketing.) Tremendous efforts have been devoted to this area to understand and quantify information diffusion dynamics. This survey investigates and summarizes the emerging distinguished works in diffusion modeling. We first put forward a unified information diffusion concept in terms of three components: information, user decision, and social vectors, followed by a detailed introduction of the methodologies for diffusion modeling. And then, a new taxonomy adopting hybrid philosophy (\textit{i.e.,} granularity and techniques) is proposed, and we made a series of comparative studies on elementary diffusion models under our taxonomy from the aspects of assumptions, methods, and pros and cons. We further summarized representative diffusion modeling in special scenarios and significant downstream tasks based on these elementary models. Finally, open issues in this field following the methodology of diffusion modeling are discussed.

On mixing enhancement by secondary baroclinic vorticity in shock-bubble interaction

To investigate the intrinsic mechanism for mixing enhancement by variable density behaviour, a canonical variable density (VD) mixing extracted from a supersonic streamwise vortex protocol, shock bubble interaction (SBI), is numerically studied and compared with a counterpart of passive scalar (PS) mixing. It is meaningful to observe that the maximum concentration decays much faster in VD SBI than in PS SBI regardless of the shock Mach number (Ma = 1.22 ~ 4). The quasi-Lamb-Oseen type velocity distribution in the PS SBI is found by analyzing the azimuthal velocity that stretches the bubble. Meanwhile, for the VD SBI, an additional stretching enhanced by the secondary baroclinic vorticity (SBV) production contributes to the faster-mixing decay. The underlying mechanism of the SBV-enhanced stretching is further revealed through the density and velocity difference between the shocked light bubble and the heavy ambient air. By combining the SBV-accelerated stretching model and the initial shock compression, a novel mixing time estimation for VD SBI is theoretically proposed by solving the advection-diffusion equation under a deformation field of an axisymmetric vortex with the additional SBV induced azimuthal velocity. Based on the mixing time model, a mixing enhancement number defined by the ratio of VD and PS mixing time further reveals the contribution from the variable-density effect, which implies a better control of density distribution for mixing enhancement in a supersonic streamwise vortex.

Feature Flow Regularization: Improving Structured Sparsity in Deep Neural Networks

Pruning is a model compression method that removes redundant parameters in deep neural networks (DNNs) while maintaining accuracy. Most available filter pruning methods require complex treatments such as iterative pruning, features statistics/ranking, or additional optimization designs in the training process. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective regularization strategy from a new perspective of evolution of features, which we call feature flow regularization (FFR), for improving structured sparsity and filter pruning in DNNs. Specifically, FFR imposes controls on the gradient and curvature of feature flow along the neural network, which implicitly increases the sparsity of the parameters. The principle behind FFR is that coherent and smooth evolution of features will lead to an efficient network that avoids redundant parameters. The high structured sparsity obtained from FFR enables us to prune filters effectively. Experiments with VGGNets, ResNets on CIFAR-10/100, and Tiny ImageNet datasets demonstrate that FFR can significantly improve both unstructured and structured sparsity. Our pruning results in terms of reduction of parameters and FLOPs are comparable to or even better than those of state-of-the-art pruning methods.

Simple Recurrent Neural Networks is all we need for clinical events predictions using EHR data

Recently, there is great interest to investigate the application of deep learning models for the prediction of clinical events using electronic health records (EHR) data. In EHR data, a patient's history is often represented as a sequence of visits, and each visit contains multiple events. As a result, deep learning models developed for sequence modeling, like recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are common architecture for EHR-based clinical events predictive models. While a large variety of RNN models were proposed in the literature, it is unclear if complex architecture innovations will offer superior predictive performance. In order to move this field forward, a rigorous evaluation of various methods is needed. In this study, we conducted a thorough benchmark of RNN architectures in modeling EHR data. We used two prediction tasks: the risk for developing heart failure and the risk of early readmission for inpatient hospitalization. We found that simple gated RNN models, including GRUs and LSTMs, often offer competitive results when properly tuned with Bayesian Optimization, which is in line with similar to findings in the natural language processing (NLP) domain. Anonymous Blockchain-based System for Consortium

Blockchain brings various advantages to online transactions. However, the total transparency of these transactions may leakage users' sensitive information. Requirements on both cooperation and anonymity for companies/organizations become necessary. In this paper, we propose a Multi-center Anonymous Blockchain-based (MAB) system, with joint management for the consortium and privacy protection for the participants. To achieve that, we formalize the syntax used by the MAB system and present a general construction based on a modular design. By applying cryptographic primitives to each module, we instantiate our scheme with anonymity and decentralization. Furthermore, we carry out a comprehensive formal analysis of the proposed solution. The results demonstrate our constructed scheme is secure and efficient.

GlyphCRM: Bidirectional Encoder Representation for Chinese Character with its Glyph

Previous works indicate that the glyph of Chinese characters contains rich semantic information and has the potential to enhance the representation of Chinese characters. The typical method to utilize the glyph features is by incorporating them into the character embedding space. Inspired by previous methods, we innovatively propose a Chinese pre-trained representation model named as GlyphCRM, which abandons the ID-based character embedding method yet solely based on sequential character images. We render each character into a binary grayscale image and design two-channel position feature maps for it. Formally, we first design a two-layer residual convolutional neural network, namely HanGlyph to generate the initial glyph representation of Chinese characters, and subsequently adopt multiple bidirectional encoder Transformer blocks as the superstructure to capture the context-sensitive information. Meanwhile, we feed the glyph features extracted from each layer of the HanGlyph module into the underlying Transformer blocks by skip-connection method to fully exploit the glyph features of Chinese characters. As the HanGlyph module can obtain a sufficient glyph representation of any Chinese character, the long-standing out-of-vocabulary problem could be effectively solved. Extensive experimental results indicate that GlyphCRM substantially outperforms the previous BERT-based state-of-the-art model on 9 fine-tuning tasks, and it has strong transferability and generalization on specialized fields and low-resource tasks. We hope this work could spark further research beyond the realms of well-established representation of Chinese texts.

The Audio Auditor: User-Level Membership Inference in Internet of Things Voice Services

With the rapid development of deep learning techniques, the popularity of voice services implemented on various Internet of Things (IoT) devices is ever increasing. In this paper, we examine user-level membership inference in the problem space of voice services, by designing an audio auditor to verify whether a specific user had unwillingly contributed audio used to train an automatic speech recognition (ASR) model under strict black-box access. With user representation of the input audio data and their corresponding translated text, our trained auditor is effective in user-level audit. We also observe that the auditor trained on specific data can be generalized well regardless of the ASR model architecture. We validate the auditor on ASR models trained with LSTM, RNNs, and GRU algorithms on two state-of-the-art pipelines, the hybrid ASR system and the end-to-end ASR system. Finally, we conduct a real-world trial of our auditor on iPhone Siri, achieving an overall accuracy exceeding 80\%. We hope the methodology developed in this paper and findings can inform privacy advocates to overhaul IoT privacy.

Snipuzz: Black-box Fuzzing of IoT Firmware via Message Snippet Inference

The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has made people's lives more convenient, but it has also raised many security concerns. Due to the difficulty of obtaining and emulating IoT firmware, the black-box fuzzing of IoT devices has become a viable option. However, existing black-box fuzzers cannot form effective mutation optimization mechanisms to guide their testing processes, mainly due to the lack of feedback. It is difficult or even impossible to apply existing grammar-based fuzzing strategies. Therefore, an efficient fuzzing approach with syntax inference is required in the IoT fuzzing domain. To address these critical problems, we propose a novel automatic black-box fuzzing for IoT firmware, termed Snipuzz. Snipuzz runs as a client communicating with the devices and infers message snippets for mutation based on the responses. Each snippet refers to a block of consecutive bytes that reflect the approximate code coverage in fuzzing. This mutation strategy based on message snippets considerably narrows down the search space to change the probing messages. We compared Snipuzz with four state-of-the-art IoT fuzzing approaches, i.e., IoTFuzzer, BooFuzz, Doona, and Nemesys. Snipuzz not only inherits the advantages of app-based fuzzing (e.g., IoTFuzzer, but also utilizes communication responses to perform efficient mutation. Furthermore, Snipuzz is lightweight as its execution does not rely on any prerequisite operations, such as reverse engineering of apps. We also evaluated Snipuzz on 20 popular real-world IoT devices. Our results show that Snipuzz could identify 5 zero-day vulnerabilities, and 3 of them could be exposed only by Snipuzz. All the newly discovered vulnerabilities have been confirmed by their vendors.

Privacy Inference Attacks and Defenses in Cloud-based Deep Neural Network: A Survey

Deep Neural Network (DNN), one of the most powerful machine learning algorithms, is increasingly leveraged to overcome the bottleneck of effectively exploring and analyzing massive data to boost advanced scientific development. It is not a surprise that cloud computing providers offer the cloud-based DNN as an out-of-the-box service. Though there are some benefits from the cloud-based DNN, the interaction mechanism among two or multiple entities in the cloud inevitably induces new privacy risks. This survey presents the most recent findings of privacy attacks and defenses appeared in cloud-based neural network services. We systematically and thoroughly review privacy attacks and defenses in the pipeline of cloud-based DNN service, i.e., data manipulation, training, and prediction. In particular, a new theory, called cloud-based ML privacy game, is extracted from the recently published literature to provide a deep understanding of state-of-the-art research. Finally, the challenges and future work are presented to help researchers to continue to push forward the competitions between privacy attackers and defenders.

An Offline Delegatable Cryptocurrency System

Blockchain-based cryptocurrencies, facilitating the convenience of payment by providing a decentralized online solution, have not been widely adopted so far due to slow confirmation of transactions. Offline delegation offers an efficient way to exchange coins. However, in such an approach, the coins that have been delegated confront the risk of being spent twice since the delegator's behaviour cannot be restricted easily on account of the absence of effective supervision. Even if a third party can be regarded as a judge between the delegator and delegatee to secure transactions, she still faces the threat of being compromised or providing misleading assure. Moreover, the approach equipped with a third party contradicts the real intention of decentralized cryptocurrency systems. In this paper, we propose \textit{DelegaCoin}, an offline delegatable cryptocurrency system to mitigate such an issue. We exploit trusted execution environments (TEEs) as decentralized "virtual agents" to prevent malicious delegation. In DelegaCoin, an owner can delegate his coins through offline-transactions without interacting with the blockchain network. A formal model and analysis, prototype implementation, and further evaluation demonstrate that our scheme is provably secure and practically feasible.

Convergence from Atomistic Model to Peierls-Nabarro Model for Dislocations in Bilayer System with Complex Lattice

In this paper, we prove the convergence from the atomistic model to the Peierls--Nabarro (PN) model of two-dimensional bilayer system with complex lattice. We show that the displacement field of the dislocation solution of the PN model converges to the dislocation solution of the atomistic model with second-order accuracy. The consistency of PN model and the stability of atomistic model are essential in our proof. The main idea of our approach is to use several low-degree polynomials to approximate the energy due to atomistic interactions of different groups of atoms of the complex lattice.

Continuum model for dislocation structures of semicoherent interfaces

In order to relieve the misfitting elastic energy, the hetero-interfaces become semicoherent by forming networks of dislocations. These microscopic structures strongly influence the materials properties associated with the development of advanced materials. We develop a continuum model for the dislocation structures of semicoherent interfaces. The classical Frank-Bilby equation that governs the dislocation structures on semicoherent interfaces is not able to determine a unique solution. The available methods in the literature either use further information from atomistic simulations or consider only special cases (dislocations with no more than two Burgers vectors) where the Frank-Bilby equation has a unique solution. In our continuum model, the dislocation structure of a semicoherent interface is obtained by minimizing the energy of the equilibrium dislocation network with respect to all the possible Burgers vectors, subject to the constraint of the Frank-Bilby equation. The continuum model is validated by comparisons with atomistic simulation results.

Phase field model for self-climb of prismatic dislocation loops by vacancy pipe diffusion

In this paper, we present a phase field model for the self-climb motion of prismatic dislocation loops via vacancy pipe diffusion driven by elastic interactions. This conserved dynamics model is developed under the framework of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with incorporation of the climb force on dislocations, and is based on the dislocation self-climb velocity formulation established in Ref.[1]. The phase field model has the advantage of being able to handle the topological and geometrical changes automatically during the simulations. Asymptotic analysis shows that the proposed phase field model gives the dislocation self-climb velocity accurately in the sharp interface limit. Numerical simulations of evolution, translation, coalescence and repelling of prismatic loops by self-climb show excellent agreement with discrete dislocation dynamics simulation results and the experimental observation.
