SolarBench: A global solar energy nowcasting benchmark

As the share of solar power grows, nowcasting weather-driven solar variability becomes critical for reliable energy system operation. State-of-the-art approaches increasingly apply deep learning to sky camera and geostationary satellite observations, but fragmented datasets and inconsistent evaluation make it difficult to determine whether reported improvements generalize across climates, cloud regimes, and photovoltaic (PV) systems. Here we introduce SolarBench, an open global benchmark for image-based solar nowcasting. SolarBench harmonizes more than six million sky and satellite images from 11 diverse sites spanning a decade, together with irradiance or PV output and auxiliary atmospheric data. An accompanying toolbox supports reproducible data access, processing, model development, and evaluation. Using SolarBench, we benchmark representative models and reveal a gap between average forecasting accuracy and the ability to capture rapid solar fluctuations. We further quantify predictability across cloud regimes and demonstrate data-efficient adaptation to new PV systems. SolarBench provides an extensible foundation for fair comparison and methodological innovation in solar nowcasting.

Two-timescale Beamforming Optimization for Downlink Multi-user Holographic MIMO Surfaces

Benefiting from the rapid development of metamaterials and metasurfaces, the holographic multiple-input and multiple-output surface (HMIMOS) has been regarded as a promising solution for future wireless networks recently. By densely packing numerous radiation elements together, HMIMOS is capable of realizing accurate beamforming with low hardware complexity. However, enormous radiation elements on the HMIMOS lead to high computational complexity and signaling overhead when applying traditional beamforming schemes relying on instantaneous channel state information (CSI). To tackle this problem, we propose a two-timescale optimization scheme to minimize the required transmission power under the constraint of all users' quality-of-service (QoS). Specifically, the beampatterns at the base station (BS) and the user equippment (UE) are optimized over the slowly changing statistical CSI based on the constrained stochastic successive convex approximation (CSSCA) algorithm. Then, the instantaneous CSI is utilized to design the precoding matrix in order to ensure the system performance without significant increase in computational cost, due to the small number of feeds on the HMIMOS. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method compared to other baselines.

Multi-omic Prognosis of Alzheimer's Disease with Asymmetric Cross-Modal Cross-Attention Network

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease characterized by progressive cognitive decline as its main symptom. In the research field of deep learning-assisted diagnosis of AD, traditional convolutional neural networks and simple feature concatenation methods fail to effectively utilize the complementary information between multimodal data, and the simple feature concatenation approach is prone to cause the loss of key information during the process of modal fusion. In recent years, the development of deep learning technology has brought new possibilities for solving the problem of how to effectively fuse multimodal features. This paper proposes a novel deep learning algorithm framework to assist medical professionals in AD diagnosis. By fusing medical multi-view information such as brain fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), genetic data, and clinical data, it can accurately detect the presence of AD, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), and Cognitively Normal (CN). The innovation of the algorithm lies in the use of an asymmetric cross-modal cross-attention mechanism, which can effectively capture the key information features of the interactions between different data modal features. This paper compares the asymmetric cross-modal cross-attention mechanism with the traditional algorithm frameworks of unimodal and multimodal deep learning models for AD diagnosis, and evaluates the importance of the asymmetric cross-modal cross-attention mechanism. The algorithm model achieves an accuracy of 94.88% on the test set.

Optimal Overlapping Tomography

Characterising large-scale quantum systems is central to fundamental physics and essential for applications of quantum technologies. While a full characterisation requires exponentially increasing resources, focusing on application-relevant information can often lead to significantly simplified analysis. Overlapping tomography is such a scheme, allowing one to obtain all the information contained in specific subsystems of multiparticle quantum systems in an efficient manner, but the ultimate limits of this approach remain elusive. We present protocols for overlapping tomography that are optimal with respect to the number of measurement settings. First, by providing algorithmic approaches based on graph theory we find the minimal number of Pauli settings, relating overlapping tomography to the problem of covering arrays in combinatorics. This significantly reduces the number of measurement settings, showing for instance that two-body overlapping tomography of nearest neighbours in qubit systems with planar topologies can always be performed with nine Pauli settings. Second, we prove that using general projective measurements, all $k$-body marginals can be reconstructed with only $3^k$ settings, independently of the system size. Finally, we demonstrate the practical applicability of our methods in a six-photon experiment. Our results will find applications in learning noise and interaction patterns in quantum computers as well as characterising fermionic systems in quantum chemistry.

TypeII-CsiNet: CSI Feedback with TypeII Codebook

The latest TypeII codebook selects partial strongest angular-delay ports for the feedback of downlink channel state information (CSI), whereas its performance is limited due to the deficiency of utilizing the correlations among the port coefficients. To tackle this issue, we propose a tailored autoencoder named TypeII-CsiNet to effectively integrate the TypeII codebook with deep learning, wherein three novel designs are developed for sufficiently boosting the sum rate performance. Firstly, a dedicated pre-processing module is designed to sort the selected ports for reserving the correlations of their corresponding coefficients. Secondly, a position-filling layer is developed in the decoder to fill the feedback coefficients into their ports in the recovered CSI matrix, so that the corresponding angular-delay-domain structure is adequately leveraged to enhance the reconstruction accuracy. Thirdly, a two-stage loss function is proposed to improve the sum rate performance while avoiding the trapping in local optimums during model training. Simulation results verify that our proposed TypeII-CsiNet outperforms the TypeII codebook and existing deep learning benchmarks.

A family of self-orthogonal divisible codes with locality 2

Linear codes are widely studied due to their applications in communication, cryptography, quantum codes, distributed storage and many other fields. In this paper, we use the trace and norm functions over finite fields to construct a family of linear codes. The weight distributions of the codes are determined in three cases via Gaussian sums. The codes are shown to be self-orthogonal divisible codes with only three, four or five nonzero weights in these cases. In particular, we prove that this family of linear codes has locality 2. Several optimal or almost optimal linear codes and locally recoverable codes are derived. In particular, an infinite family of distance-optimal binary linear codes with respect to the sphere-packing bound is obtained. The self-orthogonal codes derived in this paper can be used to construct lattices and have nice application in distributed storage.

Improving the Performance of R17 Type-II Codebook with Deep Learning

The Type-II codebook in Release 17 (R17) exploits the angular-delay-domain partial reciprocity between uplink and downlink channels to select part of angular-delay-domain ports for measuring and feeding back the downlink channel state information (CSI), where the performance of existing deep learning enhanced CSI feedback methods is limited due to the deficiency of sparse structures. To address this issue, we propose two new perspectives of adopting deep learning to improve the R17 Type-II codebook. Firstly, considering the low signal-to-noise ratio of uplink channels, deep learning is utilized to accurately select the dominant angular-delay-domain ports, where the focal loss is harnessed to solve the class imbalance problem. Secondly, we propose to adopt deep learning to reconstruct the downlink CSI based on the feedback of the R17 Type-II codebook at the base station, where the information of sparse structures can be effectively leveraged. Besides, a weighted shortcut module is designed to facilitate the accurate reconstruction. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed methods could improve the sum rate performance compared with its traditional R17 Type-II codebook and deep learning benchmarks.

Deep Learning Empowered Type-II Codebook: New Paradigm for Enhancing CSI Feedback

Deep learning based channel state information (CSI) feedback in frequency division duplex systems has drawn much attention in both academia and industry. In this paper, we focus on integrating the Type-II codebook in the beyond fifth-generation (B5G) wireless systems with deep learning to enhance the performance of CSI feedback. In contrast to its counterpart in Release 16, the Type-II codebook in Release 17 (R17) exploits the angular-delay-domain partial reciprocity between uplink and downlink channels and selects part of angular-delay-domain ports for measuring and feeding back the downlink CSI, where the performance of the conventional deep learning methods is limited due to the deficiency of sparse structures. To address this issue, we propose the new paradigm of adopting deep learning to improve the performance of R17 Type-II codebook. Firstly, considering the relatively low signal-to-noise ratio of uplink channels, deep learning is utilized to refine the selection of the dominant angular-delay-domain ports, where the focal loss is harnessed to solve the class imbalance problem. Secondly, we propose to reconstruct the downlink CSI by way of deep learning based on the feedback of R17 Type-II codebook at the base station, where the information of sparse structures can be effectively leveraged. Finally, a weighted shortcut module is designed to facilitate the accurate reconstruction, and a two-stage loss function with the combination of the mean squared error and sum rate is proposed for adapting to actual multi-user scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed angular-delay-domain port selection and CSI reconstruction paradigm can improve the sum rate performance by more than 10% compared with the traditional R17 Type-II codebook and deep learning benchmarks.

R&D Heterogeneity and Countercyclical Productivity Dispersion

Why is the U.S. industry-level productivity dispersion countercyclical? Theoretically, we build a duopoly model in which heterogeneous R&D costs determine firms' optimal behaviors and the equilibrium technology gap after a negative profit shock. Quantitatively, we calibrate a parameterized model, simulate firms' post--shock responses and predict that productivity dispersion is due to the low-cost firm increasing R&D efforts and the high-cost firm doing the opposite. Empirically, we construct an index of negative profit shocks and provide two reduced-form tests for this mechanism.

Evolution of orbital angular momentum in a soft quasi-periodic structure with topological defects

We propose a quasi-periodic structure (QPS) with topological defects. The analytical expression of the corresponding Fourier spectrum is derived, which reflects the combined effects of topological structure and quasitranslational symmetry. Light-matter interaction therein brings unusual diffraction characteristics with exotic evolution of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Long-range correlation of QPS resulted in multi-fractal and pairwise distribution of optical singularities. A general conversation law of OAM was revealed. A liquid crystal photopatterning QPS is fabricated to demonstrate the above characteristics. Dynamic reconfigurable manipulation of optical singularities was achieved. Our approach offers the opportunity to manipulate OAM with multiple degrees of freedom, which has promising applications in multi-channel quantum information processing and highdimensional quantum state generation.

Generation and manipulation of entangled photons in a domain-engineered lithium niobate waveguide

We propose to integrate the electro-optic tuning function into polarization-entangled photon pair generation process in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN). Due to the versatility of PPLN, both the spontaneously parametric down conversion and electro-optic polarization rotation effects could be realized simultaneously. Orthogonally-polarized and parallel-polarized photon pairs thus are instantly switchable by tuning the applied field. The characteristics of the source are investigated showing adjustable bandwidths and high entanglement degrees. Moreover, other kinds of reconfigurable entanglement are also achievable based on suitable domain-design. We believe the domain engineering is a very promising solution for next generation function-integrated quantum circuits.

Quantum entanglement based on surface phonon polaritons in condensed matter systems

Condensed matter systems are potential candidates to realize the integration of quantum information circuits. Surface phonon polariton (SPhP) is a special propagation mode in condensed matter systems. We present an investigation on the entanglement of SPhP modes. The entangled pairs are generated from entangled photons injected to the system. Quantum performances of entangled SPhPs are investigated by using the interaction Hamiltonian and the perturbation theory. The wave mechanics approach is taken to describe the coupling process as a comparison. Finally, the correlation of system is examined. A whole set of descriptions of SPhP entanglement thus are presented.
