Painlevé V and a Pollaczek-Jacobi type orthogonal polynomials

We study a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a one parameter family of weights $$ w(x):=w(x,t)=\rex^{-t/x}\:x^{\al}(1-x)^{\bt},\quad t\geq 0, $$ defined for $x\in[0,1].$ If $t=0,$ this reduces to a shifted Jacobi weight. Our ladder operator formalism and the associated compatibility conditions give an easy determination of the recurrence coefficients. For $t>0,$ the factor $\rex^{-t/x}$ induces an infinitely strong zero at $x=0.$ With the aid of the compatibility conditions, the recurrence coefficients are expressed in terms of a set of auxiliary quantities that satisfy a system of difference equations. These, when suitably combined with a pair of Toda-like equations derived from the orthogonality principle, show that the auxiliary quantities are a particular Painlevé V and/or allied functions. It is also shown that the logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant, $$ D_n(t):=\det(\int_{0}^{1} x^{i+j} \:\rex^{-t/x}\:x^{\al}(1-x)^{\bt}dx)_{i,j=0}^{n-1}, $$ satisfies the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ-$form of the Painlevé V and that the same quantity satisfies a second order non-linear difference equation which we believe to be new.

Painlevé V and the distribution function of discontinuous linear statistics in the Laguerre Unitary Ensembles

In this paper we study the characteristic or generating function of a certain discontinuous linear statistics of the Laguerre unitary ensembles and show that this is a particular fifth Painléve transcendant in the variable $t,$ the position of the discontinuity. The proof of the ladder operators adapted to orthogonal polynomial with discontinuous weight announced sometime ago is presented here, followed by the non-linear difference equations satisfied by two auxiliary quantities and the derivation of the Painléve equation.

Discovery of molecular shells associated with supernova remnants. (II) Kesteven 75

The young composite supernova remnant (SNR) Kesteven 75, with a pulsar wind nebula at its center, has an unusual morphology with a bright southern half-shell structure in multiwavelengths. The distance to Kes 75 has long been uncertain. Aiming to address these issues, we have made millimeter spectroscopic observations of the molecular gas toward the remnant. The V_{LSR}~83--96 km/s molecular clouds (MCs) are found to overlap a large north-western region of the remnant and are suggested to be located in front of the SNR along the line of sight. Also in the remnant area, the V_{LSR}= 45--58 km/s MC shows a blue-shifted broadening in the 12CO (J=1-0) line profile and a perturbed position-velocity structure near the edge of the remnant, with the intensity centroid sitting in the northern area of the remnant. In particular, a cavity surrounded by a molecular shell is unveiled in the intensity map in the broadened blue wing (45--51 km/s), and the southern molecular shell follows the bright partial SNR shell seen in X-rays, mid-infrared, and radio continuum. These observational features provide effective evidences for the association of Kes 75 with the adjacent 54 km/s MC. This association leads to a determination of the kinematic distance at ~10.6 kpc to the remnant, which agrees with a location at the far side of the Sagittarius arm. The morphological coincidence of the shell seen in multiwavelengths is consistent with a scenario in which the SNR shock hits a pre-existing dense shell. This dense molecular shell is suggested to likely represent the debris of the cooled, clumpy shell of the progenitor's wind bubble proximately behind the 54 km/s cloud. The discovery of the association with MC provides a possible explanation for the gamma-ray excess of the remnant.

On the photofragmentation of SF$_2^+$: Experimental evidence for a predissociation channel

We report on the first observation of the photofragmentation dynamics of SF$_2^+$. With the aid of state-of-the-art ab initio calculations on the low-lying excited cationic states of SF$_2^+$ performed by Lee et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 125, 104304 (2006)], a predissociation channel of SF$_2^+$ is evidenced by means of resonance-enhanced multilphoton ionization spectroscopy. This work represents a second experimental investigation on the low-lying excited cationic states of SF$_2^+$. [The first one is the He I photoelectron spectrum of SF$_2^+$ reported by de Leeuw et al. three decades ago, see Chem. Phys. 34, 287 (1978).]

The Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant Kes 27 as Viewed by CHANDRA: Shock Reflection from a Cavity Wall

We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic study of the thermal composite supernova remnant Kes 27 with Chandra. The X-ray spectrum of Kes 27 is characterized by K lines from Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Ca. The X-ray emitting gas is found to be enriched in sulphur and calcium. The broadband and tri-color images show two incomplete shell-like features in the northeastern half and brightness fading with increasing radius in the southwest. There are over 30 unresolved sources within the remnant. None show characteristics typical of young neutron stars. The maximum diffuse X-ray intensity coincides with a radio bright region along the eastern border. In general, gas in the inner region is at higher temperature and emission is brighter than from the outer region. The gas in the remnant appears to approach ionization equilibrium. The overall morphology can be explained by the evolution of the remnant in an ambient medium with a density enhancement from west to east. We suggest that the remnant was born in a pre-existing cavity and that the inner bright emission is due to the reflection of the initial shock from the dense cavity wall. This scenario may provide a new candidate mechanism for the X-ray morphology of other thermal composite supernova remnants.

Chandra View of DA 530: A Sub-Energetic Supernova Remnant with a Pulsar Wind Nebula?

Based on a Chandra ACIS observation, we report the detection of an extended X-ray feature close to the center of the remnant DA 530 with 5.3 sigma above the background within a circle of 20'' radius. This feature, characterized by a power-law with the photon index gamma=1.6+-0.8 and spatially coinciding with a nonthermal radiosource, most likely represents a pulsar wind nebula. We have further examined the spectrum of the diffuse X-ray emission from the remnant interior with a background-subtracted count rate of ~0.06 counts s^-1 in 0.3-3.5 keV. The spectrum of the emission can be described by a thermal plasma with a temperature of ~0.3-0.6 keV and a Si over-abundance of >~7 solar. These spectral characteristics, together with the extremely low X-ray luminosity, suggest that the remnant arises from a supernova with an anomalously low mechanical energy (<10^50 ergs). The centrally-filled thermal X-ray emission of the remnant may indicate an early thermalization of the SN ejecta by the circum-stellar medium. Our results suggest that the remnant is likely the product of a core-collapsed SN with a progenitor mass of 8-12 Msun. Similar remnants are probably common in the Galaxy, but have rarely been studied.

The Heart-shaped Supernova Remnant 3C391 viewed in Multi-bands

Using Chandra X-ray, Spitzer mid-IR, and 1.5 GHz radio data, we examine the spatial structure of SNR 3C391. The X-ray surface brightness is generally anti-correlative with the IR and radio brightness. The multiband data clearly exhibit a heart-shaped morphology and show the multi-shell structure of the remnant. A thin brace-like shell on the south detected at 24 um is projected outside the radio border and confines the southern faint X-ray emission. The leading 24 um knot on the SE boundary appears to be partly surrounded by soft X-ray emitting gas. The mid-IR emission is dominated by the contribution of the shocked dust grains, which may have been partly destroyed by sputtering.

A Preliminary Chandra X-ray Spectroscopy of the Supernova Remnant N132D

We present the preliminary results of a Chandra X-ray study of N132D, a young shell-like supernova remnant (SNR) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The equivalent width maps of emissions from O, Ne, Mg, Si, and S are provided. Spatially resolved spectral analysis for the small-scale regions were tentatively performed. The X-ray spectra of the interior can be described with a single-thermal model. The faint interior regions have lower density and higher temperature (above 1keV) than those of bright interior regions. The X-ray spectra along the shell can be phenomenally fitted with either a double-vpshock model or a vpshock + powerlaw model. If the non-thermal component is true, N132D would be listed as another X-ray synchrotron SNR.

CHANDRA ACIS Spectroscopy of N157B -- A Young Composite Supernova Remnant in a Superbubble

We present Chandra ACIS observations of N157B, a young supernova remnant located in the 30 Doradus star-formation region of the LMC. This remnant contains the most energetic pulsar known (PSR J0537-6910), which is surrounded by a bright nonthermal nebula that likely represents a toroidal pulsar wind terminal shock observed edge-on. We confirm the non-thermal nature of the comet-shaped X-ray emission feature and show that the spectral steepening of this feature away from the pulsar is quantitatively consistent with synchrotron cooling of shocked pulsar wind particles flowing downstream at a bulk velocity close to the speed of light. Around the cometary nebula we unambiguously detect a thermal component, which accounts for about 1/3 of the total 0.5 - 10 keV flux from the remnant. This thermal component is distributed among various clumps of metal-enriched plasma embedded in the low surface brightness X-ray-emitting diffuse gas. The relative metal enrichment pattern suggests that the mass of the supernova progenitor is >~ 20M_sun. A comparison of the X-ray data with HST optical images suggests that the explosion site is close to a dense cloud, against which a reflection shock is launched. The interaction between this reflection shock and the nebula has likely produced both its cometary shape and the surrounding thermal emission enhancement. SNR N157B is apparently expanding into the hot low-density interior of a surrounding superbubble formed by the young OB association LH99, as revealed by Spitzer mid-infrared images. This scenario naturally explains the exceptionally large sizes of both the thermal and nonthermal components as well as the lack of an outer shell of the SNR. These results provide a rare glimpse into the SNR structure and evolution in a region of recent star-formation.

Painleve IV and degenerate Gaussian Unitary Ensembles

We consider those Gaussian Unitary Ensembles where the eigenvalues have prescribed multiplicities, and obtain joint probability density for the eigenvalues. In the simplest case where there is only one multiple eigenvalue t, this leads to orthogonal polynomials with the Hermite weight perturbed by a factor that has a multiple zero at t. We show through a pair of ladder operators, that the diagonal recurrence coefficients satisfy a particular Painleve IV equation for any real multiplicity. If the multiplicity is even they are expressed in terms of the generalized Hermite polynomials, with t as the independent variable.

Perturbed Hankel Determinants

In this short note, we compute, for large n the determinant of a class of n x n Hankel matrices, which arise from a smooth perturbation of the Jacobi weight. For this purpose, we employ the same idea used in previous papers, where the unknown determinant, D_n[w_{α,β}h] is compared with the known determinant D_n[w_{α,β}]. Here w_{α,β} is the Jacobi weight and w_{α,β}h, where h=h(x),x\in[-1,1] is strictly positive and real analytic, is the smooth perturbation on the Jacobi weight w_{α,β}(x):=(1-x)^α(1+x)^β. Applying a previously known formula on the distribution function of linear statistics, we compute the large n asymptotics of D_n[w_{α,β}h] and supply a missing constant of the expansion.

Highly Clumpy Structure of the Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant 3C391 Unveiled by Chandra

The nature of the internal thermal X-ray emission seen in ``thermal composite" supernova remnants is still uncertain. Chandra observation of the 3C391 shows a southeast-northwest elongated morphology and unveils a highly clumpy structure of the remnant. Detailed spatially resolved spectral analysis for the small-scale features reveals normal metal abundance and uniform temperature for the interior gas. The properties of the hot gas comparatively favor the cloudlet evaporation model as a main mechanism for the ``thermal composite" X-ray appearance, though radiative rim and thermal conduction may also be effective. A faint protrusion is found in Si and S lines out of the southwest radio border.

Narrow Band Chandra X-ray Analysis of Supernova Remnant 3C391

We present the narrow-band and the equivalent width (EW) images of the thermal composite supernova remnant (SNR) 3C391 for the X-ray emission lines of elements Mg, Si, & S using the Chandra ACIS Observational data. These EW images reveal the spatial distribution of the emission of the metal species Mg, Si, & S in the remnant. They have clumpy structure similar to that seen from the broadband diffuse emission, suggesting that they are largely of interstellar origin. We find an interesting finger-like feature protruding outside the southwestern radio border of the remnant, which is somewhat similar to the jet-like Si structure found in the famous SNR Cas A. This feature may possibly be the debris of the jet of ejecta which implies an asymmetrical supernova explosion of a massive progenitor star.

Orthogonal polynomials with discontinuous weights

In this paper we present a brief description of a ladder operator formalism applied to orthogonal polynomials with discontinuous weights. The two coefficient functions, A_n(z) and B_n(z), appearing in the ladder operators satisfy the two fundamental compatibility conditions previously derived for smooth weights. If the weight is a product of an absolutely continuous reference weight w_0 and a standard jump function, then A_n(z) and B_n(z) have apparent simple poles at these jumps. We exemplify the approach by taking w_0 to be the Hermite weight. For this simpler case we derive, without using the compatibility conditions, a pair of difference equations satisfied by the diagonal and off-diagonal recurrence coefficients for a fixed location of the jump. We also derive a pair of Toda evolution equations for the recurrence coefficients which, when combined with the difference equations, yields a particular Painleve IV.

A Chandra ACIS view of the Thermal Composite Supernova Remnant 3C391

We present a 60 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the thermal composite supernova remnant 3C391. The southeast-northwest elongated morphology is similar to that previously found in radio and X-ray studies. This observation unveils a highly clumpy structure of the remnant. Detailed spatially resolved spectral analysis for the small-scale features reveals that the interior gas is generally of normal metal abundance and has approached or basically reached ionization equilibrium. The hydrogen column density increases from southeast to northwest. Three mechanisms, radiative rim, thermal conduction, and cloudlet evaporation, may all play roles in the X-ray appearance of 3C391 as a "thermal composite" remnant, but there are difficulties with each of them in explaining some physical properties. Comparatively, the cloudlet evaporation model is favored by the main characteristics such as the highly clumpy structure and the uniform temperature and density distribution over most of the remnant. The directly measured postshock temperature also implies a young age, about 4 kyr, for the remnant. The postshock gas pressure derived from the NE and SW rims, which harbor maser spots, is consistent with the estimate for the maser regions. An unresolved X-ray source is observed on the northwest border and its spectrum is best fitted by a power-law.

Supernova Remnant Crossing a Density Jump: A Thin Shell Model

The environments of supernova explosion are often inhomogeneous and there may be jumps in their density structure. We have developed a semi-analytic model under the thin-shell approximation for supernova remnants that evolve crossing a density jump in the ambient medium. The generic evolutionary relations are presented for the blast wave after impacting on a cavity wall, which may be produced by the energetic stellar wind from the supernova progenitor. The relations can also be extended to the case that the blast waves break out from a dense cloud if different density contrast is used. This model is applied to N132D, a well-known cavity-born supernova remnant whose evolution has not yet been quantitively estimated in a cavity scenario due to lack of model formulae, and self-consistent physical parameters are obtained.

The X-ray problem revisited

In this letter we re-visit the X-ray problem. Assuming point interaction between the conduction electrons and the first instantaneously created core-hole, the latter's Green's function can be represented as a Fredholm determinant of certain Wiener-Hopf operators acting on L^2(0,T) with discontinuous symbols. Here the symbols are the local conduction electron Green's function in the frequency domain and T is the time the core-hole spends in the system before removal. In this situation, the classical theory of singular integral equations usually employed in the literature to compute the large T asymptotics of the Fredholm determinant ceased to be applicable. A rigorous theory first put forward in the context of operator theory comes into play and universal constants are found in the aymptotics.
