An overlapping-free leaf segmentation method for plant point clouds

Automatic leaf segmentation, as well as identification and classification methods that built upon it, are able to provide immediate monitoring for plant growth status to guarantee the output. Although 3D plant point clouds contain abundant phenotypic features, plant leaves are usually distributed in clusters and are sometimes seriously overlapped in the canopy. Therefore, it is still a big challenge to automatically segment each individual leaf from a highly crowded plant canopy in 3D for plant phenotyping purposes. In this work, we propose an overlapping-free individual leaf segmentation method for plant point clouds using the 3D filtering and facet region growing. In order to separate leaves with different overlapping situations, we develop a new 3D joint filtering operator, which integrates a Radius-based Outlier Filter (RBOF) and a Surface Boundary Filter (SBF) to help to separate occluded leaves. By introducing the facet over-segmentation and facet-based region growing, the noise in segmentation is suppressed and labeled leaf centers can expand to their whole leaves, respectively. Our method can work on point clouds generated from three types of 3D imaging platforms, and also suitable for different kinds of plant species. In experiments, it obtains a point-level cover rate of 97% for Epipremnum aureum, 99% for Monstera deliciosa, 99% for Calathea makoyana, and 87% for Hedera nepalensis sample plants. At the leaf level, our method reaches an average Recall at 100.00%, a Precision at 99.33%, and an average F-measure at 99.66%, respectively. The proposed method can also facilitate the automatic traits estimation of each single leaf (such as the leaf area, length, and width), which has potential to become a highly effective tool for plant research and agricultural engineering.

Identifying Solar Flare Precursors Using Time Series of SDO/HMI Images and SHARP Parameters

We present several methods towards construction of precursors, which show great promise towards early predictions, of solar flare events in this paper. A data pre-processing pipeline is built to extract useful data from multiple sources, Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) and Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), to prepare inputs for machine learning algorithms. Two classification models are presented: classification of flares from quiet times for active regions and classification of strong versus weak flare events. We adopt deep learning algorithms to capture both the spatial and temporal information from HMI magnetogram data. Effective feature extraction and feature selection with raw magnetogram data using deep learning and statistical algorithms enable us to train classification models to achieve almost as good performance as using active region parameters provided in HMI/Space-Weather HMI-Active Region Patch (SHARP) data files. Case studies show a significant increase in the prediction score around 20 hours before strong solar flare events.

On the Gamma-Ray Nebula of Vela Pulsar. I. Very Slow Diffusion of Energetic Electrons within the TeV Nebula

High-energy particle transport in pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) plays an essential role in explaining the characteristics revealed in multiwavelength observations. In this paper, the TeV-gamma-ray-emitting electrons in the Vela X PWN are approximated to be injected impulsively when the cocoon is formed due to the interaction between the SNR reverse shock and the PWN. By solving the diffusion-loss equation analytically, we reproduce the broadband spectral energy distribution and surface brightness profile simultaneously. The diffusion coefficient of TeV electrons and positrons, which is well constrained by the spectral and spatial properties of the TeV nebula, is thus determined to be $1 \times 10^{26}$\,cm$^{2}$\,s$^{-1}$ for 10\,TeV electrons and positrons. This coefficient is more than three orders of magnitude lower than that in the interstellar medium, in agreement with a constraint recently obtained from HAWC observations of a TeV nebula associated with the Geminga pulsar. These results suggest that slow diffusion of high-energy particles might be common in PWNe.

On the Gamma-ray Nebula of Vela Pulsar. II. the Soft Spectrum of the Extended Radio Nebula

The Vela\,X pulsar wind nebula (PWN) is characterized by the extended radio nebula (ERN) and the central X-ray "cocoon". We have interpreted the $γ$-ray spectral properties of the cocoon in the sibling paper (Bao et al.\,2019); here, we account for the broadband photon spectrum of the ERN. Since the diffusive escape of the electrons from the TeV emitting region is expected to play an insignificant role in shaping the spectrum of the ERN, we attribute the GeV cutoff of the ERN to the reverse shock-PWN interaction. Due to the disruption of the reverse shock, most of plasma of the PWN is driven into the ERN. During the subsequent reverberation phase, the ERN could be compressed by a large factor in radius, and the magnetic field in the ERN is thus significantly enhanced, burning off the high energy electrons. We thus obtain the electron spectrum of the ERN and the broadband spectrum of the ERN are explained satisfactorily.

On the photometric signature of fast rotators

Rapidly rotating stars have been recently recognized as having a major role in the interpretation of colour-magnitude diagrams of young and intermediate-age star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Milky Way. In this work, we evaluate the distinctive spectra and distributions in colour-colour space that follow from the presence of a substantial range in effective temperatures across the surface of fast rotators. The calculations are inserted in a formalism similar to the one usually adopted for non-rotating stars, which allows us to derive tables of bolometric corrections as a function not only of a reference effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity, but also of the rotational speed with respect to the break-up value, $ω$, and the inclination angle, $i$. We find that only very fast rotators ($ω>0.95$) observed nearly equator-on ($i>45^\circ$) present sizable deviations from the colour-colour relations of non-rotating stars. In light of these results, we discuss the photometry of the $\sim$ 200-Myr-old cluster NGC 1866 and its split main sequence, which has been attributed to the simultaneous presence of slow and fast rotators. The small dispersion of its stars in colour-colour diagrams allow us to conclude that fast rotators in this cluster either have rotational velocities $ω<0.95$, or are all observed nearly pole-on. Such geometric colour-colour effects, although small, might be potentially detectable in the huge, high-quality photometric samples in the post-Gaia era, in addition to the evolutionary effects caused by rotation-induced mixing.

Analytical Results for the Dynamics of Parabolic Level-Crossing Model

We study the dynamics of a two-level crossing model with a parabolic separation of the diabatic energies. The solutions are expressed in terms of the tri-confluent Heun equations --- the generalization of the confluent hypergeometric equations. We obtain analytical approximations for the state populations in terms of Airy and Bessel functions. Applicable expressions are derived for a large part of the parameter space. We also provide simple formulas which connect local solution in different time regimes. The validity of the analytical approximations is shown by comparing them to numerical simulations.

Orthogonal Polynomials, Asymptotics and Heun Equations

The Painlevé equations arise from the study of Hankel determinants generated by moment matrices, whose weights are expressed as the product of ``classical" weights multiplied by suitable ``deformation factors", usually dependent on a ``time variable'' $t$. From ladder operators one finds second order linear ordinary differential equations for associated orthogonal polynomials with coefficients being rational functions. The Painlevé and related functions appear as the residues of these rational functions. We will be interested in the situation when $n$, the order of the Hankel matrix and also the degree of the polynomials $P_n(x)$ orthogonal with respect to the deformed weights, gets large. We show that the second order linear differential equations satisfied by $P_n(x)$ are particular cases of Heun equations when $n$ is large. In some sense, monic orthogonal polynomials generated by deformed weights mentioned below are solutions of a variety of Heun equa\-tions. Heun equations are of considerable importance in mathematical physics and in the special cases they degenerate to the hypergeometric and confluent hypergeometric equations. In this paper we look at three type of weights: the Jacobi type, which are are supported $(0,1]$ the Laguerre type and the weights deformed by the indicator function of $(a,b)$ $χ_{(a,b)}$ and the step function $θ(x)$.

Denoising of 3-D Magnetic Resonance Images Using a Residual Encoder-Decoder Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network

Structure-preserved denoising of 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images is a critical step in medical image analysis. Over the past few years, many algorithms with impressive performances have been proposed. In this paper, inspired by the idea of deep learning, we introduce an MRI denoising method based on the residual encoder-decoder Wasserstein generative adversarial network (RED-WGAN). Specifically, to explore the structure similarity between neighboring slices, a 3D configuration is utilized as the basic processing unit. Residual autoencoders combined with deconvolution operations are introduced into the generator network. Furthermore, to alleviate the oversmoothing shortcoming of the traditional mean squared error (MSE) loss function, the perceptual similarity, which is implemented by calculating the distances in the feature space extracted by a pretrained VGG-19 network, is incorporated with the MSE and adversarial losses to form the new loss function. Extensive experiments are implemented to assess the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the proposed RED-WGAN achieves performance superior to several state-of-the-art methods in both simulated and real clinical data. In particular, our method demonstrates powerful abilities in both noise suppression and structure preservation.

Fermi LAT detection of the supernova remnant SN 1006 revisited: the south-west limb

The data from the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have recently been updated. We thus re-analyze the LAT data for the supernova remnant (SNR) SN 1006. Two parts of gamma-ray emission from the region is clearly resolved, which correspond to the north-east (NE) and south-west (SW) limbs of the SNR. The former was detected in the previous LAT data (Xing et al. 2016), but the latter is newly detected in this work. The detection of the two limbs are at a 4 sigma significance level, and the spectral results for the NE limb is consistent with those obtained in previous detection analyses. We construct the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) for the SW limb. Different scenarios are considered for the SED in gamma-ray energies. We conclude very similar to that of the NE limb, the high-energy and very high-energy emission from the SW limb is likely dominated by the leptonic process, in which high-energy electrons accelerated from the shell region of the SNR inverse-Compton scatter background photons to gamma-rays.

PoMo: Generating Entity-Specific Post-Modifiers in Context

We introduce entity post-modifier generation as an instance of a collaborative writing task. Given a sentence about a target entity, the task is to automatically generate a post-modifier phrase that provides contextually relevant information about the entity. For example, for the sentence, "Barack Obama, _______, supported the #MeToo movement.", the phrase "a father of two girls" is a contextually relevant post-modifier. To this end, we build PoMo, a post-modifier dataset created automatically from news articles reflecting a journalistic need for incorporating entity information that is relevant to a particular news event. PoMo consists of more than 231K sentences with post-modifiers and associated facts extracted from Wikidata for around 57K unique entities. We use crowdsourcing to show that modeling contextual relevance is necessary for accurate post-modifier generation. We adapt a number of existing generation approaches as baselines for this dataset. Our results show there is large room for improvement in terms of both identifying relevant facts to include (knowing which claims are relevant gives a >20% improvement in BLEU score), and generating appropriate post-modifier text for the context (providing relevant claims is not sufficient for accurate generation). We conduct an error analysis that suggests promising directions for future research.

Communication-Efficient Federated Deep Learning with Asynchronous Model Update and Temporally Weighted Aggregation

Federated learning obtains a central model on the server by aggregating models trained locally on clients. As a result, federated learning does not require clients to upload their data to the server, thereby preserving the data privacy of the clients. One challenge in federated learning is to reduce the client-server communication since the end devices typically have very limited communication bandwidth. This paper presents an enhanced federated learning technique by proposing a synchronous learning strategy on the clients and a temporally weighted aggregation of the local models on the server. In the asynchronous learning strategy, different layers of the deep neural networks are categorized into shallow and deeps layers and the parameters of the deep layers are updated less frequently than those of the shallow layers. Furthermore, a temporally weighted aggregation strategy is introduced on the server to make use of the previously trained local models, thereby enhancing the accuracy and convergence of the central model. The proposed algorithm is empirically on two datasets with different deep neural networks. Our results demonstrate that the proposed asynchronous federated deep learning outperforms the baseline algorithm both in terms of communication cost and model accuracy.

Constraining the thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase with resolved stellar populations in the Small Magellanic Cloud

The thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) experienced by low- and intermediate-mass stars is one of the most uncertain phases of stellar evolution and the models need to be calibrated with the aid of observations. To this purpose, we couple high-quality observations of resolved stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with detailed stellar population synthesis simulations computed with the TRILEGAL code. The strength of our approach relies on the detailed spatially-resolved star formation history of the SMC, derived from the deep near-infrared photometry of the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds, as well as on the capability to quickly and accurately explore a wide variety of parameters and effects with the COLIBRI code for the TP-AGB evolution. Adopting a well-characterized set of observations -- star counts and luminosity functions -- we set up a calibration cycle along which we iteratively change a few key parameters of the TP-AGB models until we eventually reach a good fit to the observations. Our work leads to identify two best-fitting models that mainly differ in the efficiencies of the third dredge-up and mass loss in TP-AGB stars with initial masses larger than about 3 M$_{\odot}$. On the basis of these calibrated models we provide a full characterization of the TP-AGB stellar population in the SMC in terms of stellar parameters (initial masses, C/O ratios, carbon excess, mass-loss rates). Extensive tables of isochrones including these improved models are publicly available.

Mixing by overshooting and rotation in intermediate mass stars

Double-line eclipsing binaries (DLEBs) have been recently used to constrain the amount of central mixing as a function of stellar mass, with contrasting results. In this work, we reanalyze the DLEB sample by Claret & Torres, using a Bayesian method and new PARSEC tracks that account for both convective core overshooting and rotational mixing. Using overshooting alone we obtain that, for masses larger than about 1.9 M$_{\odot}$, the distribution of the overshooting parameter, $λ_\mathrm{ov}$, has a wide dispersion between 0.3 and 0.8, with essentially no values below $λ_\mathrm{ov}=$ 0.3 - 0.4. While the lower limit supports a mild convective overshooting efficiency, the large dispersion derived is difficult to explain in the framework of current models of that process, which leave little room for large randomness. We suggest that a simple interpretation of our results can be rotational mixing: different initial rotational velocities, in addition to a fixed amount of overshooting, could reproduce the high dispersion derived for intermediate-mass stars. After a reanalysis of the data, we find good agreement with models computed with fixed overshooting parameter, $λ_\mathrm{ov}=0.4$, and initial rotational rates, $ω$, uniformly distributed in a wide range between $0$ and $0.8$ times the break-up value, at varying initial mass. We also find that our best-fitting models for the components of $α$ Aurigae and TZ Fornacis, agree with their observed rotational velocities, thus providing independent support to our hypothesis. We conclude that a constant efficiency of overshooting in concurrence with a star-to-star variation in the rotational mixing, might be crucial in the interpretation of such data.

Non-equilibrium ionization in mixed-morphology supernova remnants

The mixed morphology class of supernova remnants (MMSNRs) comprises a substantial fraction of observed remnants and yet there is as yet no consensus on their origin. A clue to their nature is the presence of regions that show X-ray evidence of recombining plasmas. Recent calculations of remnant evolution in a cloudy interstellar medium (ISM) that included thermal conduction but not non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) showed promise in explaining observed surface brightness distributions but could not determine if recombining plasmas were present. In this paper, we present numerical hydrodynamical models of MMSNRs in 2D and 3D including explicit calculation of NEI effects. Both the spatial ionization distribution and temperature-density diagrams show that recombination occurs inside the simulated MMSNR, and that both adiabatic expansion and thermal conduction cause recombination, albeit in different regions. Features created by the adiabatic expansion stand out in the spatial and temperature-density diagrams, but thermal conduction also plays a role. Thus thermal conduction and adiabatic expansion both contribute significantly to the cooling of high-temperature gas. Realistic observational data are simulated with both spatial and spectral input from various regions. We also discuss the possibility of analyzing the sources of recombination and dominant hydrodynamical processes in observations using temperature-density diagrams and spatial maps.

FERMI observation of the jets of the microquasar SS433

We report our analysis of the data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) for the SS 433/W50 region. The total data length is ten years. Different from the previous results reported for this region (for which an old version of database was used), we show that excess emission is detected around the w1 region in the western lobe of the jets from SS 433. The region is bright at X-rays due to the interaction between the jet and the ambient medium. This detection also matches well the recent results of the very-high-energy detection of SS 433/W50 with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC). However, the eastern regions that are slightly brighter in HAWC's observation are not detected in the Fermi data. Constructing the broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) for the western region, we compare with the HAWC results for the eastern regions and discuss the possible origin of the emission. A leptonic scenario can provide a fit to the Fermi GeV spectrum and HAWC TeV detection, where the former and latter are due to the synchrotron radiation and inverse-Compton process respectively. However, the model can not explain the X-ray and radio emission from the region simultaneously, which thus requires further observational and theoretical studies of the region in order to clarify the reasons.

Linear Statistics of Random Matrix Ensembles at the Spectrum Edge Associated with the Airy Kernel

In this paper, we study the large $N$ behavior of the moment-generating function (MGF) of the linear statistics of $N\times N$ Hermitian matrices in the Gaussian unitary, symplectic, orthogonal ensembles (GUE, GSE, GOE) and Laguerre unitary, symplectic, orthogonal ensembles (LUE, LSE, LOE) at the edge of the spectrum. From the finite $N$ Fredholm determinant expression of the MGF of the linear statistics, we find the large $N$ asymptotics of the MGF associated with the Airy kernel in these Gaussian and Laguerre ensembles. Then we obtain the mean and variance of the suitably scaled linear statistics. We show that there is an equivalence between the large $N$ behavior of the MGF of the scaled linear statistics in Gaussian and Laguerre ensembles, which leads to the statistical equivalence between the mean and variance of suitably scaled linear statistics in Gaussian and Laguerre ensembles. In the end, we use the Coulomb fluid method to obtain the mean and variance of another type of linear statistics in GUE, which reproduces the result of Basor and Widom.

Spatially Resolved X-ray Spectroscopy of Kepler's Supernova Remnant: Distinct Properties of the Circumstellar Medium and the Ejecta

Kepler's supernova remnant (SNR) is believed to result from a Type Ia supernova, but be interacting with dense circumstellar material (CSM), which makes its progenitor system a mystery. Using the Chandra ACIS-S 741 ks effective exposure data and an advanced adaptive binning algorithm, we analyse the spectra from tessellated regions in Kepler's SNR. For the first time, we map out the detailed spatial distributions of emission measure (EM), electron temperature, ionization parameter, and metal abundances for both the low- and high-temperature plasma components. The low-temperature plasma diverges into two branches in the temperature v.s. ionization parameter diagram, which appear to be spatially associated with the warm CSM dusts and the Si- and S-rich ejecta, respectively. We construct the probability distribution functions of abundance ratios of O and Mg to L-shell emitting Fe ([O]/[Fe]$_{\rm L}$ and [Mg]/[Fe]$_{\rm L}$), and fit them with double Gaussians. Thereby, we distinguish the CSM from the ejecta: the CSM is characterized by [O]/[Fe]$_{\rm L}$ $= 0.77^{+0.30}_{-0.23}$ and [Mg]/[Fe]$_{\rm L}$ $= 1.11^{+0.46}_{-0.32}$, while the ejecta by [O]/[Fe]$_{\rm L}$ $= 0.31^{+0.17}_{-0.10}$ and [Mg]/[Fe]$_{\rm L}$ $= 0.38^{+0.36}_{-0.19}$. We estimate the total hydrogen mass of the shocked CSM as $\sim 1.4 M_\odot$ and the EM-weighted mean [Mg]/[O] $= 1.14 \pm 0.49$, which can be reproduced with an asymptotic giant branch donor star with initial mass of $\sim 4 M_\odot$. The abundance ratios from the shocked ejecta are well compatible with the predicted results from spherical delayed-detonation models for Type Ia supernovae. We also find that the two `ears' of the remnant are dominated by Si- and S-rich ejecta, thus favoring a pre-explosion jets scenario.
