Photonic-enabled radio-frequency self-interference cancellation incorporated in an in-band full-duplex radio-over-fiber system

A photonic approach for radio-frequency (RF) self-interference cancellation (SIC) incorporated in an in-band full-duplex radio-over-fiber system is proposed. A dual-polarization binary phase-shift keying modulator is used for dual-polarization multiplexing at the central office (CO). A local oscillator signal and an intermediate-frequency signal carrying the downlink data are single-sideband modulated on the two polarization directions of the modulator, respectively. The optical signal is then transmitted to the remote unit, where the optical signals in the two polarization directions are split into two parts. One part is detected to generate the up-converted downlink RF signal, and the other part is re-modulated by the uplink RF signal and the self-interference, which is then transmitted back to the CO for the signal down-conversion and SIC via the optical domain signal adjustment and balanced detection. The functions of SIC, frequency up-conversion, down-conversion, and fiber transmission with dispersion immunity are all incorporated in the system. An experiment is performed. Cancellation depths of more than 39 dB for the single-tone signal and more than 20 dB for the 20-MBaud 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signal are achieved in the back-to-back case. The performance of the system does not have a significant decline when a section of 4.1-km optical fiber is incorporated.

Concordance: In-flight Calibration of X-ray Telescopes without Absolute References

We describe a process for cross-calibrating the effective areas of X-ray telescopes that observe common targets. The targets are not assumed to be "standard candles" in the classic sense, in that we assume that the source fluxes have well-defined, but {\it a priori} unknown values. Using a technique developed by Chen et al. (2019, arXiv:1711.09429) that involves a statistical method called {\em shrinkage estimation}, we determine effective area correction factors for each instrument that brings estimated fluxes into the best agreement, consistent with prior knowledge of their effective areas. We expand the technique to allow unique priors on systematic uncertainties in effective areas for each X-ray astronomy instrument and to allow correlations between effective areas in different energy bands. We demonstrate the method with several data sets from various X-ray telescopes.

Simplified Doppler frequency shift measurement enabled by Serrodyne optical frequency translation

A simplified Doppler frequency shift measurement approach based on Serrodyne optical frequency translation is reported. A sawtooth wave with an appropriate amplitude is sent to one phase modulation arm of a Mach-Zehnder modulator in conjunction with the transmitted signal to implement the Serrodyne optical frequency transition, as well as the optical phase modulation of the transmitted signal on the frequency-shifted optical carrier. The echo signal is applied to the other phase modulation arm of the Mach-Zehnder modulator. The optical signals from the two arms are combined in the Mach-Zehnder modulator, whose lower optical sidebands are selected by an optical bandpass filter and then detected in a photodetector. By simply measuring the frequency of the output low-frequency signal, the value and direction of DFS can be determined simultaneously. An experiment is performed. DFS from -100 to 100 kHz is measured for microwave signals from 6 to 17 GHz with a measurement error of less than 0.03 Hz and a measurement stability of 0.015 Hz in 30 minutes when a 500-kHz sawtooth wave is used as the reference.

Virtual Landmark-Based Control of Docking Support for Assistive Mobility Devices

This work proposes an autonomous docking control for nonholonomic constrained mobile robots and applies it to an intelligent mobility device or wheelchair for assisting the user in approaching resting furniture such as a chair or a bed. We defined a virtual landmark inferred from the target docking destination. Then, we solve the problem of keeping the targeted volume inside the field of view (FOV) of a tracking camera and docking to the virtual landmark through a novel definition that enables to control for the desired end-pose. In this article, we proposed a nonlinear feedback controller to perform the docking with the depth camera's FOV as a constraint. Then, a numerical method is proposed to find the feasible space of initial states where convergence could be guaranteed. Finally, the entire system was embedded for real-time operation on a standing wheelchair with the virtual landmark estimation by 3D object tracking with an RGB-D camera and we validated the effectiveness in simulation and experimental evaluations. The results show the guaranteed convergence for the feasible space depending on the virtual landmark location. In the implementation, the robot converges to the virtual landmark while respecting the FOV constraints.

Single-photon non-reciprocity with an integrated magneto-optical isolator

Non-reciprocal photonic devices are essential components of classical optical information processing. It is interesting and important to investigate their feasibility in the quantum world. In this work, the quantum properties of an on-chip silicon nitride (SiN)-based magneto-optical (MO) isolator were studied using a single-photon non-reciprocal dynamical transmission experiment. The measured isolation ratio for single photons achieved was 12.33 dB, which proved the functionality of our on-chip isolator. The quantum coherence of the passing single photons was further verified using high-visibility quantum interference. Our work will promote on-chip isolators within the integrated quantum circuits and help introduce novel phenomena in quantum information processes.

On the hard $γ$-ray spectrum of the potential PeVatron supernova remnant G106.3+2.7

The Tibet AS$γ$ experiment has measured $γ$-ray flux of supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 up to 100 TeV, suggesting it {being} potentially a "PeVatron". Challenge arises when the hadronic scenario requires a hard proton spectrum (with spectral index $\approx 1.8$), while {usual observations and numerical simulations prefer} a soft proton spectrum {(with spectral index $\geq 2$)}. In this paper, we explore an alternative scenario to explain the $γ$-ray spectrum of G106.3+2.7 within the current understanding of acceleration and escape processes. We consider that the cosmic ray {particles} are scattered by the turbulence driven via Bell instability. The resulting hadronic $γ$-ray spectrum is novel, dominating the contribution to the emission above 10\,TeV, and can explain the bizarre broadband spectrum of G106.3+2.7 in combination with leptonic emission from the remnant.

Argus: A Fully Transparent Incentive System for Anti-Piracy Campaigns (Extended Version)

Anti-piracy is fundamentally a procedure that relies on collecting data from the open anonymous population, so how to incentivize credible reporting is a question at the center of the problem. Industrial alliances and companies are running anti-piracy incentive campaigns, but their effectiveness is publicly questioned due to the lack of transparency. We believe that full transparency of a campaign is necessary to truly incentivize people. It means that every role, e.g., content owner, licensee of the content, or every person in the open population, can understand the mechanism and be assured about its execution without trusting any single role. We see this as a distributed system problem. In this paper, we present Argus, a fully transparent incentive system for anti-piracy campaigns. The groundwork of Argus is to formulate the objectives for fully transparent incentive mechanisms, which securely and comprehensively consolidate the different interests of all roles. These objectives form the core of the Argus design, highlighted by our innovations about a Sybil-proof incentive function, a commit-and-reveal scheme, and an oblivious transfer scheme. In the implementation, we overcome a set of unavoidable obstacles to ensure security despite full transparency. Moreover, we effectively optimize several cryptographic operations so that the cost for a piracy reporting is reduced to an equivalent cost of sending about 14 ETH-transfer transactions to run on the public Ethereum network, which would otherwise correspond to thousands of transactions. With the security and practicality of Argus, we hope real-world anti-piracy campaigns will be truly effective by shifting to a fully transparent incentive mechanism.

Dissecting the Gaia HR diagram within 200 pc

We analyse the high-quality Hertzsprung-Russell diagram (HRD) derived from Gaia data release 2 for the Solar Neighbourhood. We start building an almost-complete sample within 200 pc and for |b|>25 deg, so as to limit the impact of known errors and artefacts in the Gaia catalog. Particular effort is then put into improving the modelling of population of binaries, which produce two marked features in the HRD: the sequence of near-equal mass binaries along the lower main sequence, and the isolated group of hot subdwarfs. We describe a new tool, BinaPSE, to follow the evolution of interacting binaries in a way that improves the consistency with PARSEC evolutionary tracks for single stars. BinaPSE is implemented into the TRILEGAL code for the generation of "partial models" for both single and binary stellar populations, taking into account the presence of resolved and unresolved binaries. We then fit the Gaia HRD via MCMC methods that search for the star formation history (SFH) and initial binary fraction (by mass) that maximise the likelihood. The main results are (i) the binary fraction derived from the lower main sequence is close to 0.4, while twice larger values are favoured when the upper part of the HRD is fitted; (ii) present models predict the observed numbers of hot subdwarfs to within a factor of 2; (iii) irrespective of the prescription for the binaries, the star formation rate peaks at values 1.5e-4 Msun/yr at ages slightly above 2 Gyr, and then decreases to 0.8e-4 Msun/yr at very old ages.

Continual Learning of Context-dependent Processing in Neural Networks

Deep neural networks (DNNs) are powerful tools in learning sophisticated but fixed mapping rules between inputs and outputs, thereby limiting their application in more complex and dynamic situations in which the mapping rules are not kept the same but changing according to different contexts. To lift such limits, we developed a novel approach involving a learning algorithm, called orthogonal weights modification (OWM), with the addition of a context-dependent processing (CDP) module. We demonstrated that with OWM to overcome the problem of catastrophic forgetting, and the CDP module to learn how to reuse a feature representation and a classifier for different contexts, a single network can acquire numerous context-dependent mapping rules in an online and continual manner, with as few as $\sim$10 samples to learn each. This should enable highly compact systems to gradually learn myriad regularities of the real world and eventually behave appropriately within it.

Schrodinger's Red Pixel by Quasi Bound-State-In-Continuum

While structural colors are ubiquitous in nature, saturated reds are mysteriously absent. Hence, a longstanding problem is in fabricating nanostructured surfaces that exhibit reflectance approaching the theoretical limit. This limit is termed the Schrodinger red and demands sharp spectral transitions from "stopband" to a high reflectance "passband" with total suppression of higher-order resonances at blue and green wavelengths. Current approaches based on metallic or dielectric nanoantennas are insufficient to simultaneously meet these conditions. Here, for the 1st time, we designed and fabricated tall Si nanoantenna arrays on quartz substrate to support two partially overlapping y polarized quasi bound-state-in-the-continuum (q-BIC) modes in the red wavelengths with sharp spectral edges. These structures produce possibly the most saturated and brightest reds with ~80% reflectance, exceeding the red vertex in sRGB and even the cadmium red pigment. We employed a gradient descent algorithm with structures supporting q BIC as the starting point. Although the current design is polarization dependent, the proposed paradigm has enabled us to achieve the elusive structural red and the design principle could be generalized to Schrodinger's pixels of other colors. The design is suitable for scale up using other nanofabrication techniques for larger area applications, such as red pixels in displays, decorative coatings, and miniaturized spectrometers with high wavelength selectivity.

Genuine tripartite entanglement as a probe of quantum phase transitions in a spin-1 Heisenberg chain with single-ion anisotropy

We study the quantum phase transitions of spin-1 Heisenberg chains with an easy-axis anisotropy $Δ$ and a uniaxial single-ion anisotropy $D$ using a multipartite entanglement approach. The genuine tripartite entanglement between the spin blocks, measured by the tripartite qutrit hyperdeterminant, is calculated within the quantum renormalization group method. Using this approach, the phase boundaries between the topological Haldane, large-D and anti-ferromagnetic Néel phases are determined in the half $Δ-D$ plane with $Δ>0$. When the size of the spin blocks increases, the genuine tripartite entanglement between the blocks exhibits a nonzero plateau in the topological Haldane phase, and experiences abrupt drops at both the phase boundaries between the Haldane--large-D and Haldane--Néel phases, which justifies the usage of genuine multipartite entanglement as a probe of topological phases in spin systems.

A Novel Graph based Trajectory Predictor with Pseudo Oracle

Pedestrian trajectory prediction in dynamic scenes remains a challenging and critical problem in numerous applications, such as self-driving cars and socially aware robots. Challenges concentrate on capturing pedestrians' motion patterns and social interactions, as well as handling the future uncertainties. Recent studies focus on modeling pedestrians' motion patterns with recurrent neural networks, capturing social interactions with pooling-based or graph-based methods, and handling future uncertainties by using random Gaussian noise as the latent variable. However, they do not integrate specific obstacle avoidance experience (OAE) that may improve prediction performance. For example, pedestrians' future trajectories are always influenced by others in front. Here we propose GTPPO (Graph-based Trajectory Predictor with Pseudo Oracle), an encoder-decoder-based method conditioned on pedestrians' future behaviors. Pedestrians' motion patterns are encoded with a long short-term memory unit, which introduces the temporal attention to highlight specific time steps. Their interactions are captured by a graph-based attention mechanism, which draws OAE into the data-driven learning process of graph attention. Future uncertainties are handled by generating multi-modal outputs with an informative latent variable. Such a variable is generated by a novel pseudo oracle predictor, which minimizes the knowledge gap between historical and ground-truth trajectories. Finally, the GTPPO is evaluated on ETH, UCY and Stanford Drone datasets, and the results demonstrate state-of-the-art performance. Besides, the qualitative evaluations show successful cases of handling sudden motion changes in the future. Such findings indicate that GTPPO can peek into the future.

Cellular Automata Simulation of Grain Growth of Powder Metallurgy Nickel-Based Superalloy

Primary γ' phase instead of carbides and borides plays an important role in suppressing grain growth during solution at 1433K of FGH98 nickel-based polycrystalline alloys. Results illustrate that as-fabricated FGH98 has equiaxed grain structure and after heat treatment, grains remain equiaxed but grow larger. In order to clarify the effects of the size and volume fraction of the primary γ' phase on the grain growth during heat treatment, this paper establish a 2D Cellular Automata (CA) model based on the thermal activation and the lowest energy principle. The CA results are compared with the experimental results and show a good fit with an error less than 10%. Grain growth kinetics are depicted and simulations in real time for various sizes and volume fractions of primary γ' particles work out well with the Zener relation. The coefficient n value in Zener relation is theoretically calculated and its minimum value is 0.23 when the radius of primary γ' is 2.8μm.

EnMcGAN: Adversarial Ensemble Learning for 3D Complete Renal Structures Segmentation

3D complete renal structures(CRS) segmentation targets on segmenting the kidneys, tumors, renal arteries and veins in one inference. Once successful, it will provide preoperative plans and intraoperative guidance for laparoscopic partial nephrectomy(LPN), playing a key role in the renal cancer treatment. However, no success has been reported in 3D CRS segmentation due to the complex shapes of renal structures, low contrast and large anatomical variation. In this study, we utilize the adversarial ensemble learning and propose Ensemble Multi-condition GAN(EnMcGAN) for 3D CRS segmentation for the first time. Its contribution is three-fold. 1)Inspired by windowing, we propose the multi-windowing committee which divides CTA image into multiple narrow windows with different window centers and widths enhancing the contrast for salient boundaries and soft tissues. And then, it builds an ensemble segmentation model on these narrow windows to fuse the segmentation superiorities and improve whole segmentation quality. 2)We propose the multi-condition GAN which equips the segmentation model with multiple discriminators to encourage the segmented structures meeting their real shape conditions, thus improving the shape feature extraction ability. 3)We propose the adversarial weighted ensemble module which uses the trained discriminators to evaluate the quality of segmented structures, and normalizes these evaluation scores for the ensemble weights directed at the input image, thus enhancing the ensemble results. 122 patients are enrolled in this study and the mean Dice coefficient of the renal structures achieves 84.6%. Extensive experiments with promising results on renal structures reveal powerful segmentation accuracy and great clinical significance in renal cancer treatment.

Revealing a peculiar supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 as a petaelectronvolt proton accelerator with X-ray observations

Supernova remnants (SNRs) have long been considered as one of the most promising sources of Galactic cosmic rays. In the SNR paradigm, petaelectronvolt (PeV) proton acceleration may only be feasible at the early evolution stage, lasting a few hundred years, when the SNR shock speed is high. While evidence supporting the acceleration of PeV protons in young SNRs has yet to be discovered, X-ray synchrotron emission is an important indicator of fast shock. We here report the first discovery of X-ray synchrotron emission from the possibly middle-aged SNR G106.3+2.7, implying that this SNR is still an energetic particle accelerator despite its age. This discovery, along with the ambient environmental information, multiwavelength observation, and theoretical arguments, supports SNR G106.3+2.7 as a likely powerful PeV proton accelerator.

Multiscale IoU: A Metric for Evaluation of Salient Object Detection with Fine Structures

General-purpose object-detection algorithms often dismiss the fine structure of detected objects. This can be traced back to how their proposed regions are evaluated. Our goal is to renegotiate the trade-off between the generality of these algorithms and their coarse detections. In this work, we present a new metric that is a marriage of a popular evaluation metric, namely Intersection over Union (IoU), and a geometrical concept, called fractal dimension. We propose Multiscale IoU (MIoU) which allows comparison between the detected and ground-truth regions at multiple resolution levels. Through several reproducible examples, we show that MIoU is indeed sensitive to the fine boundary structures which are completely overlooked by IoU and f1-score. We further examine the overall reliability of MIoU by comparing its distribution with that of IoU on synthetic and real-world datasets of objects. We intend this work to re-initiate exploration of new evaluation methods for object-detection algorithms.

Dielectric metasurface for independent complex-amplitude control of arbitrary two orthogonal states of polarization

Metasurfaces are planar structures that can manipulate the amplitude, phase and polarization (APP) of light at subwavelength scale. Although various functionalities have been proposed based on metasurface, a most general optical control, i.e., independent complex-amplitude (amplitude and phase) control of arbitrary two orthogonal states of polarizations, has not yet been realized. Such level of optical control can not only cover the various functionalities realized previously, but also enable new functionalities that are not feasible before. Here, we propose a single-layer dielectric metasurface to realize this goal and experimentally demonstrate several advanced functionalities, such as two independent full-color printing images under arbitrary elliptically orthogonal polarizations and dual sets of printing-hologram integrations. Our work opens the way for a wide range of applications in advanced image display, information encoding, and polarization optics.

Multi-functional microwave photonic radar system for simultaneous distance and velocity measurement and high-resolution microwave imaging

A photonic-assisted multi-functional radar system for simultaneous distance and velocity measurement and high-resolution microwave imaging is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by using a composite transmitted microwave signal of a single-chirped linearly frequency-modulated (LFM) signal and a single-tone microwave signal. In the system, the transmitted signal is generated via photonic frequency up-conversion based on a single integrated dual-polarization dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPol-DPMZM), whereas the echo signals scattered from the target are de-chirped to two low-frequency signals using a microwave photonic frequency mixer. By using the two low-frequency de-chirped signals, the real-time distance and radial velocity of the moving target can be measured accurately according to the round-trip time of the echo signal and its Doppler frequency shift. Compared with the previous reported distance and velocity measurement methods, where two LFM signals with opposite chirps are used, these parameters can be obtained using only a single-chirped LFM signal and a single-tone microwave signal. Meanwhile, high-resolution inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging can also be realized using ISAR imaging algorithms. An experiment is performed to verify the proposed multi-functional microwave photonic radar system. An up-chirped LFM signal from 8.5 to 12.5 GHz and an 8.0 GHz single-tone microwave signal are used as the transmitted signal. The results show that the absolute measurement errors of distance and radial velocity are less than 5.9 cm and 2.8 cm/s, respectively. ISAR imaging results are also demonstrated, which proves the high-resolution and real-time ISAR imaging ability of the proposed system.
