Some Liouville theorems for the fractional Laplacian

In this paper, we prove the following result. Let $α$ be any real number between $0$ and $2$. Assume that $u$ is a solution of $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{α/2} u(x) = 0 , \;\; x \in \mathbb{R}^n ,\\ \displaystyle\underset{|x| \to \infty}{\underline{\lim}} \frac{u(x)}{|x|^γ} \geq 0 , \end{array} \right. $$ for some $0 \leq γ\leq 1$ and $γ< α$. Then $u$ must be constant throughout $\mathbb{R}^n$. This is a Liouville Theorem for $α$-harmonic functions under a much weaker condition. For this theorem we have two different proofs by using two different methods: One is a direct approach using potential theory. The other is by Fourier analysis as a corollary of the fact that the only $α$-harmonic functions are affine.

Discrete-Time Models Resulting From Dynamic Continuous-Time Perturbations In Phase-Amplitude Modulation-Demodulation Schemes

We consider discrete-time (DT) systems S in which a DT input is first tranformed to a continuous-time (CT) format by phase-amplitude modulation, then modified by a non-linear CT dynamical transformation F, and finally converted back to DT output using an ideal de-modulation scheme. Assuming that F belongs to a special class of CT Volterra series models with fixed degree and memory depth, we provide a complete characterization of S as a series connection of a DT Volterra series model of fixed degree and memory depth, and an LTI system with special properties. The result suggests a new, non-obvious, analytically motivated structure of digital compensation of analog nonlinear distortions (for example, those caused by power amplifiers) in digital communication systems. Results from a MATLAB simulation are used to demonstrate effectiveness of the new compensation scheme, as compared to the standard Volterra series approach.

Sparse Additive Model using Symmetric Nonnegative Definite Smoothers

We introduce a new algorithm, called adaptive sparse backfitting algorithm, for solving high dimensional Sparse Additive Model (SpAM) utilizing symmetric, non-negative definite smoothers. Unlike the previous sparse backfitting algorithm, our method is essentially a block coordinate descent algorithm that guarantees to converge to the optimal solution. It bridges the gap between the population backfitting algorithm and that of the data version. We also prove variable selection consistency under suitable conditions. Numerical studies on both synthesis and real data are conducted to show that adaptive sparse backfitting algorithm outperforms previous sparse backfitting algorithm in fitting and predicting high dimensional nonparametric models.

Asteroseismology of DAV star EC14012-1446, mode identification and model fittings

EC14012-1446 was observed by Handler et al. in April 2004, June 2004, May 2005, and April 2007, and by Provencal et al. in 2008. We review the observations together and obtain 34 independent frequencies. According to the frequency splitting and the asymptotic period spacing law, we identify 6 $l$=1 modes, 4 $l$=2 modes, 5 $l$=3 modes, 10 $l$=1 or 2 modes. Grids of white dwarf models are generated by WDEC with H, He, C, O diffusion in a four-parameter space. The core compositions are directly from white dwarf models generated by MESA. The best-fitting model has $M_{*}$=0.710\,$M_{\odot}$, $T_{\rm eff}$=12200\,K, log($M_{\rm He}/M_{*}$)=-2.5, log($M_{\rm H}/M_{*}$)=-7.0, log\,$g$=8.261, and $ϕ$=3.185\,s. There are 4, 2, and 1 modes identified as trapped in H envelope for observed $l$=1, 2, and 3 modes, respectively. Trapped modes jump the queue of uniform period spacing.

Cooling mechanical resonators to quantum ground state from room temperature

Ground-state cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators is a fundamental requirement for test of quantum theory and for implementation of quantum information. We analyze the cavity optomechanical cooling limits in the intermediate coupling regime, where the light-enhanced optomechanical coupling strength is comparable with the cavity decay rate. It is found that in this regime the cooling breaks through the limits in both the strong and weak coupling regimes. The lowest cooling limit is derived analytically at the optimal conditions of cavity decay rate and coupling strength. In essence, cooling to the quantum ground state requires $Q_{\mathrm{m}}>2.4n_{\mathrm{th}% }$, with $Q_{\mathrm{m}}$ being the mechanical quality factor and $n_{\mathrm{th}}$ being the thermal phonon number. Remarkably, ground-state cooling is achievable starting from room temperature, when mechanical $Q$-frequency product $Q_{\mathrm{m}}{ν>1.5}\times10^{13}$, and both of the cavity decay rate and the coupling strength exceed the thermal decoherence rate. Our study provides a general framework for optimizing the backaction cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators.

Frequency up-conversion and arbitrary sum arithmetic of lights with orbital angular momentum

Frequency sum of two light beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in quasi-phase matching crystals was reported for the first time. The situations in which one light carried OAM and the other is in Gaussian mode and both beams carried OAM were studied in detail. An arbitrary sum arithmetic of lights with OAM was demonstrated in the conversion process. Our study is very promising in constructing hybrid OAM-based optical communication networks and all optical switching.

High efficiency SHG of orbital angular momentum light in an external cavity

Traditional methods for generating orbital angular momentum (OAM) light include holographic diffraction gratings, vortex phase plate and spatial light modulator. In this article, we report a new method for high efficient OAM light generation. By pumping an external cavity contains a quasi phase matching nonlinear crystal with a fundamental OAM carrying light and properly aligning the cavity, mode matching between the pump light and the cavitys higher order Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode is achieved, conversion efficiency up to 10.3 percentage have been obtained. We have demonstrated that the cavity can stably operate at its higher order LG mode just as Gaussian mode for the first time. The SHG light possesses a doubled OAM value with respect to the pump light. The parameters that affect the beam quality and conversion efficiency are discussed in detail. Our work opens a brand new field in laser optics, and makes the first step toward high efficiency OAM light processing.

Generation of light with controllable spatial patterns via the sum frequency in quasi-phase matching crystals

Light beams with extraordinary spatial structures, such as the Airy beam (AB), the Bessel-Gaussian beam (BGB) and the Laguerre-Gaussian beam (LGB), are widely studied and applied in many optical scenarios. We report on preparation of light beams with controllable spatial structures through sum frequency generation (SFG) using two Gaussian pump beams in a quasi-phase matching (QPM) crystal. The spatial structures, including multi-ring-like BGB, donut-like LGB, and super-Gaussian-like beams, can be controlled periodically via crystal phase mismatching by tuning the pump frequency or crystal temperature. This phenomenon has not been reported or discussed previously. Additionally, we present numerical simulations of the phenomenon, which agree very well with the experimental observations. Our findings give further insight into the SFG process in QPM crystals, provide a new way to generate light with unusual spatial structures, and may find applications in the fields of laser optics, all-optical switching, and optical manipulation and trapping.

Orbital angular momentum light frequency conversion and interference with quasi-phase matching crystals

Light with helical phase structures, carrying quantized orbital angular momentum (OAM), has many applications in both classical and quantum optics, such as high-capacity optical communications and quantum information processing. Frequency conversion is a basic technique to expand the frequency range of fundamental light. The frequency conversion of OAM-carrying light gives rise to new physics and applications such as up-conversion detection of images and high dimensional OAM entanglements. Quasi-phase matching (QPM) nonlinear crystals are good candidates for frequency conversion, particularly for their high-valued effective nonlinear coefficients and no walk-off effect. Here we report the first experimental second-harmonic generation (SHG) of OAM light with a QPM crystal, where a UV light with OAM of 100 is generated. OAM conservation is verified using a specially designed interferometer. With a pump beam carrying an OAM superposition of opposite sign, we observed interesting interference phenomena in the SHG light; specifically, a photonics gear-like structure is obtained that gives direct evidence of OAM conservation, which will be very useful for ultra-sensitive angular measurements. We also develop a theory to reveal the underlying physics of the phenomena. The methods and theoretical analysis shown here are also applicable to other frequency conversion processes, such as sum frequency generation and difference-frequency generation, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

An optical fan for light beams for high-precision optical measurements and optical switching

The polarization and orbital angular momentum properties of light are of great importance in optical science and technology in the fields of high precision optical measurements and high capacity and high speed optical communications. Here we show, a totally new method, based on a combination of these two properties and using the thermal dispersion and electro-optical effect of birefringent crystals, the construction of a simple and robust scheme to rotate a light beam like a fan. Using a computer-based digital image processing technique, we determine the temperature and the thermal dispersion difference of the crystal with high resolution. We also use the rotation phenomenon to realize thermo-optic and electro-optic switches. The basic operating principles for measurement and switching processes are presented in detail. The methods developed here will have wide practical applicability in various fields, including remote sensing, materials science and optical communication networks.

Asteroseismic Study on Cluster Distance Moduli for RGB Stars in NGC 6791 and NGC 6819

Stellar distance is an important basic parameter in stellar astrophysics. Stars in a cluster are thought to be formed coevally from the same interstellar cloud of gas and dust. They are therefore expected to have common properties. These common properties strengthen our ability to constrain theoretical models and/or to determine fundamental parameters, such as stellar mass, metal fraction, and distance when tested against an ensemble of cluster stars. Here we derive a new relation based on solar-like oscillations, photometric observations, and the theory of stellar structure and evolution of red giant branch stars to determine cluster distance moduli through the global oscillation parameters $Δν$ and $ν_{\rm max}$, and photometric data \textit{V}. The values of $Δν$ and $ν_{\rm max}$ are derived from \textit{kepler} observations. At the same time, it is used to interpret the trends between \textit{V} and $Δν$. From the analyses of this newly derived relation and observational data of NGC 6791 and NGC 6819 we devise a method in which all stars in a cluster are regarded as one entity to determine the cluster distance modulus. This approach fully reflects the characteristic of member stars in a cluster as a natural sample. From this method we derive true distance moduli of $13.09\pm0.10$ mag for NGC 6791 and $11.88\pm0.14$ mag for NGC 6819. Additionally, we find that the distance modulus only slightly depends on the metallicity [Fe/H] in the new relation. A change of 0.1 dex in [Fe/H] will lead to a change of 0.06 mag in the distance modulus.

New asteroseismic scaling relations based on Hayashi track relation applied to red-giant branch stars in NGC 6791 and NGC 6819

Stellar mass $M$, radius $R$, and gravity $g$ are important basic parameters in stellar physics. Accurate values for these parameters can be obtained from the gravitational interaction between stars in multiple systems or from asteroseismology. Stars in a cluster are thought to be formed coevally from the same interstellar cloud of gas and dust. The cluster members are therefore expected to have some properties in common. These common properties strengthen our ability to constrain stellar models and asteroseismically derived $M$, $R$ and $g$ when tested against an ensemble of cluster stars. Here we derive new scaling relations based on a relation for stars on the Hayashi track ($\sqrt{T_{\rm eff}} \sim g^pR^q$) to determine the masses and metallicities of red giant branch stars in open clusters NGC 6791 and NGC 6819 from the global oscillation parameters $Δν$ (the large frequency separation) and $ν_{\rm max}$ (frequency of maximum oscillation power). The $Δν$ and $ν_{\rm max}$ values are derived from \kepler\ observations. From the analysis of these new relations we derive: (1) direct observational evidence that the masses of red giant branch stars in a cluster are the same within their uncertainties, (2) new methods to derive $M$ and $z$ of the cluster in a self consistent way from $Δν$ and $ν_{\rm max}$, with lower intrinsic uncertainties, (3) the mass dependence in the $Δν$ - $ν_{\rm max}$ relation for red giant branch stars.

Properties of semi-convection and convective overshooting for massive stars

Properties of semi-convection and core convective overshooting of stars with 15 $M_{\odot}$ and 30 $M_{\odot}$ are calculated in the present paper. New methods are used to deal with semi-convection. Different entropy gradient is used when adopting the Schwarzschild method and the Ledoux method which are used to confine the convective boundary and to calculate the turbulent quantities: $\frac{\partial \overline{s}}{\partial r}=-\frac{c_{p}}{H_P}(\nabla-\nabla_{\rm ad})$ when the Schwarzschild method is adopted and $\frac{\partial \overline{s}}{\partial r}=-\frac{c_{p}}{H_P}(\nabla-\nabla_{\rm ad}-\nabla_μ)$ when the Ledoux method is adopted. Core convective overshooting and semi-convection are treated as a whole part and the development of them are found to present nearly opposite tendency, more intensive core convective overshooting lead to weaker semi-convection. The influences of different parameters and the convection processing methods on the turbulent quantities are analyzed in this paper. Increasing the mixing-length parameter $α$ leads to more turbulent dynamic energy in the convective core and prolonging the overshooting distance but depressing the development of semi-convection. The Ledoux method adopted leads to overshooting extending further and semi-convection developing suppressed.

Asteroseismology of DAV star HS0507+0434B, including the core composition profiles

The DAV star, HS0507+0434B, was observed by Fu et al. (2013) in 2007 and from 2009 December to 2010 January. There were a total of six triplets with nearly equal split, which were identified as $l$ = 1 modes caused by rotation. In order to fit the six $l$ = 1 modes, grids of white dwarf models are generated by WDEC. For the core composition profiles, we choose the linear fittings to carbon profile of white dwarf models from MESA, which can be considered as results of real nuclear burning process. Coupled with diffusion equilibrium H/He and He/C mixtures, we make grids of models in WDEC and do asteroseismology works on HS0507+0434B. There is a total of 9.50 seconds error for our best-fitting model, which is smaller than the result (a total of 22.1 seconds error) of Fu et al. (2013), when fitting the six $l$ = 1 modes. The two other previous identified pulsation mode frequencies (286.1 s and 743.40 s) may also be well fitted by our best-fitting model. The model parameters are $T_{eff}$ = 11450 K, log$g$ = 8.088, $M_{*}$ = 0.640 $M_{\odot}$, log($M_{H}$/$M_{*}$) = -6, and log($M_{He}$/$M_{*}$) = -3.

On the exact degree of multi-cyclic extension of $\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$

Let $q$ be a power of a prime number $p$, $k=\mathbb{F}_{q}(t)$ be the rational function field over finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $K/k$ be a multi-cyclic extension of prime degree. In this paper we will give an exact formula for the degree of $K$ over $k$ by considering both Kummer and Artin-Schreier cases.

Structural and electronic properties of hybrid graphene and boron nitride nanostructures on Cu

Recently, two-dimensional nanostructures consisting of alternating graphene and boron nitride (BN) domains have been synthesized. These systems possess interesting electronic and mechanical properties, with potential applications in electronics and optical devices. Here, we perform a first-principles investigation of models of BN-C hybrid monolayers and nanoribbons deposited on the Cu(111) surface, a substrate used for their growth in said experiments. For the sake of comparison, we also consider BN and BC2N nanostructures. We show that BN and BC2N monolayers bind weakly to Cu(111), whereas monolayers with alternating domains interact strongly with the substrate at the B-C interface, due to the presence of localized interface states. This binding leads to a deformation of the monolayers and sizable n-doping. Nanoribbons exhibit a similar behaviour. Furthermore, they also interact significantly with the substrate at the edge, even in the case of passivated edges. These findings suggest a route to tune the band gap and doping level of BN-C hybrid models based on the interplay between nanostructuring and substrate-induced effects.

Zitterbewegung in Bogoliubov's System

We show that Bogoliubov's quasiparticle in superfluid $^3He-B$ undergoes the Zitterbewegung, as a free relativistic Dirac's electron does. The expectation value of position, as well as spin, of the quasiparticle is obtained and compared with that of the Dirac's electron. In particular, the Zitterbewegung of Bogoliubov's quasiparticle has a frequency approximately $10^5$ lower than that of an electron, rendering a more promising experimental observation.
