Toward Open Vocabulary Aerial Object Detection with CLIP-Activated Student-Teacher Learning

An increasingly massive number of remote-sensing images spurs the development of extensible object detectors that can detect objects beyond training categories without costly collecting new labeled data. In this paper, we aim to develop open-vocabulary object detection (OVD) technique in aerial images that scales up object vocabulary size beyond training data. The performance of OVD greatly relies on the quality of class-agnostic region proposals and pseudo-labels for novel object categories. To simultaneously generate high-quality proposals and pseudo-labels, we propose CastDet, a CLIP-activated student-teacher open-vocabulary object Detection framework. Our end-to-end framework following the student-teacher self-learning mechanism employs the RemoteCLIP model as an extra omniscient teacher with rich knowledge. By doing so, our approach boosts not only novel object proposals but also classification. Furthermore, we devise a dynamic label queue strategy to maintain high-quality pseudo labels during batch training. We conduct extensive experiments on multiple existing aerial object detection datasets, which are set up for the OVD task. Experimental results demonstrate our CastDet achieving superior open-vocabulary detection performance, e.g., reaching 46.5% mAP on VisDroneZSD novel categories, which outperforms the state-of-the-art open-vocabulary detectors by 21.0% mAP. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to apply and develop the open-vocabulary object detection technique for aerial images. The code is available at https://github.com/lizzy8587/CastDet.

Spin-layer coupling in altermagnets multilayer: a design principle for spintronics

The discovery of collinear symmetric-compensated altermagnets (AM) with intrinsic spin splitting provides a route towards energy-efficient and ultrafast device applications. Here, using first-principles calculations and symmetry analysis, we propose a series of AM Cr2SX (X=O, S, Se) monolayer and explore the spin splitting in Cr2SX multilayer. A general design principle for realizing the spin-layer coupling in odd/even-layer is mapped out based on the comprehensive analysis of spin group symmetry. The spin splitting behavior related with the MzUt, Mz and ML symmetries in AM multilayer can be significantly modulated by magnetic orders, crystal symmetry and external perpendicular gate field (Ez). Due to the spin-compensated bands of sublayers linked by overall Mz and interlayers ML symmetries, the Cr2S2 odd-layer exhibits the unique coexistence of spin splitting and spin degeneracy at high symmetric paths and X/Y valley, respectively. Furthermore, owing to the higher priority of overall ML symmetry compared to interlayers ML symmetry in AM even-layer, the spin-layer coupling of AM multilayer shows strong odd/even-layer dependence. Our work not only offer a new direction for manipulating spin splitting, but also greatly enrich the research on AM monolayer and multilayer.

Piezoelectric Manipulation and Engineering for Layertronics in Two-Dimensional Materials

The electronic transport characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) systems have widespread application prospects in the fabrication of multifunctional nanodevices. However, the current research for basic transport phenomena, such as anomalous valley Hall effect (AVHE) and piezoelectric response, is limited to discrete discussion. Here, we theoretically propose a valley-piezoelectricity coupling strategy beyond the existing paradigm to realize AVHE and layer Hall effect (LHE) in ferrovalley (FV) systems, and its essential principle can be extended to general valleytronic materials. Through first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the large polarized electric field of 2.8*106 (1.67*107) V/m can be induced by 0.1% uniaxial strain in FV 2H-LaHF (1T-LaHF) monolayers. In addition, the microscopic mechanism of interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of 2H-LaHF bilayer is uncovered by the spin Hamiltonian and super-superexchange (SSE) interaction. Our findings pave the way for new explorations of valley Hall-related effect involving piezoelectricity.

Approaching High-efficiency Spatial Light Modulation with Lossy Phase-change Material

The prevalent high intrinsic absorption in the crystalline state of phase-change materials (PCMs), typically leads to a decline in modulation efficiency for phase-change metasurfaces, underutilizing their potential for quasi-continuous phase-state tuning. This research introduces a concise design approach that maximizes the exploitation of the quasi-continuous phase transition properties of PCM, achieving high-efficiency spatial light modulation. By optimizing the metasurface design, the phase modulation process is strategically localized in a low crystallization ratio state, significantly reducing the impact of material absorption on modulation efficiency. Utilizing GSST as an example, numerical simulations demonstrate a minimum reflectance of 46.5% at the target wavelength of 1550 nm, with a phase modulation depth of 246.6°. The design is fruther extended to dynamic polarization modulation by incorporating structural anisotropy, enabling independent control of amplitude and phase modulation in orthogonal polarization directions. This strategy not only circumvents the efficiency limitations of crystalline states but also harnesses the full potential of PCMs for multifunctional photonic applications.

Possible way to achieve anomalous valley Hall effect by tunable intrinsic piezoelectric polarization in FeO$_2$SiGeN$_2$ monolayer

Valley-related multiple Hall effect and piezoelectric response are novel transport characteristics in low-dimensional system, however few studies have reported their coexistence in a single system as well as their coupling relationships. By first-principles calculations, we propose a multifunctional Janus semiconductor, i.e. FeO$_2$SiGeN$_2$ monolayer with large valley polarization of about 120 meV and in-plane piezoelectric polarization with d11 of -0.714.03 pm/V. The magnetic anisotropy energy can be significantly regulated by electronic correlation strength and strain, which can be attributed to the change of competition relationship about Fe-3d-resolved magnetic anisotropy energy brought about by external regulatory means. Electronic correlation strength can induce phase transitions in Janus FeO$_2$SiGeN$_2$ monolayer from ferrovalley to quantum anomalous Hall phase, while the half-valley metallic state as the boundary of the phase transition can gererate 100% spin- and valley polarization. The related phase transition mechanism is analyzed based on the two-band strained kp model. The presence of piezoelectric strain coefficients d11 in valleytronic material makes the coupling between charge degrees of freedom and valley degrees of freedom possible, and the intrinsic electric field caused by the in-plane piezoelectric response provide the way to realize piezoelectric anomalous valley Hall effect. This work may pave a way to find a new member of materials with valley-related multiple Hall effect and stimulate further experimental works related to valleytronics and piezotronics.

Air-to-Ground Communications Beyond 5G: CoMP Handoff Management in UAV Network

Air-to-ground (A2G) networks, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as base stations to serve terrestrial user equipments (UEs), are promising for extending the spatial coverage capability in future communication systems. Coordinated transmission among multiple UAVs significantly improves network coverage and throughput compared to a single UAV transmission. However, implementing coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission for UAV mobility requires complex cooperation procedures, regardless of the handoff mechanism involved. This paper designs a novel CoMP transmission strategy that enables terrestrial UEs to achieve reliable and seamless connections with mobile UAVs. Specifically, a computationally efficient CoMP transmission method based on the theory of Poisson-Delaunay triangulation is developed, where an efficient subdivision search strategy for a CoMP UAV set is designed to minimize search overhead by a divide-and-conquer approach. For concrete performance evaluation, the cooperative handoff probability of the typical UE is analyzed, and the coverage probability with handoffs is derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional Voronoi scheme with the nearest serving UAV regarding coverage probabilities with handoffs. Moreover, each UE has a fixed and unique serving UAV set to avoid real-time dynamic UAV searching and achieve effective load balancing, significantly reducing system resource costs and enhancing network coverage performance.

DVS: Blood cancer detection using novel CNN-based ensemble approach

Blood cancer can only be diagnosed properly if it is detected early. Each year, more than 1.24 million new cases of blood cancer are reported worldwide. There are about 6,000 cancers worldwide due to this disease. The importance of cancer detection and classification has prompted researchers to evaluate Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for the purpose of classifying blood cancers. The objective of this research is to conduct an in-depth investigation of the efficacy and suitability of modern Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures for the detection and classification of blood malignancies. The study focuses on investigating the potential of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (D-CNNs), comprising not only the foundational CNN models but also those improved through transfer learning methods and incorporated into ensemble strategies, to detect diverse forms of blood cancer with a high degree of accuracy. This paper provides a comprehensive investigation into five deep learning architectures derived from CNNs. These models, namely VGG19, ResNet152v2, SEresNet152, ResNet101, and DenseNet201, integrate ensemble learning techniques with transfer learning strategies. A comparison of DenseNet201 (98.08%), VGG19 (96.94%), and SEresNet152 (90.93%) shows that DVS outperforms CNN. With transfer learning, DenseNet201 had 95.00% accuracy, VGG19 had 72.29%, and SEresNet152 had 94.16%. In the study, the ensemble DVS model achieved 98.76% accuracy. Based on our study, the ensemble DVS model is the best for detecting and classifying blood cancers.

Motion Hologram: Jointly optimized hologram generation and motion planning for photorealistic and speckle-free 3D displays via reinforcement learning

Holography is capable of rendering three-dimensional scenes with full-depth control, and delivering transformative experiences across numerous domains, including virtual and augmented reality, education, and communication. However, traditional holography presents 3D scenes with unnatural defocus and severe speckles due to the limited space bandwidth product of the spatial light modulator (SLM). Here, we introduce Motion Hologram, a novel holographic technique to accurately portray photorealistic and speckle-free 3D scenes, by leveraging a single hologram and learnable motion trajectory, which are jointly optimized within the deep reinforcement learning framework. Specifically, we experimentally demonstrated the proposed technique could achieve a 4~5 dB PSNR improvement of focal stacks in comparison with traditional holography and could successfully depict speckle-free, high-fidelity, and full-color 3D displays using only a commercial SLM for the first time. We believe the proposed method promises a new form of holographic displays that will offer immersive viewing experiences for audiences.

Improving the Precision of CNNs for Magnetic Resonance Spectral Modeling

Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging is a widely available imaging modality that can non-invasively provide a metabolic profile of the tissue of interest, yet is challenging to integrate clinically. One major reason is the expensive, expert data processing and analysis that is required. Using machine learning to predict MRS-related quantities offers avenues around this problem, but deep learning models bring their own challenges, especially model trust. Current research trends focus primarily on mean error metrics, but comprehensive precision metrics are also needed, e.g. standard deviations, confidence intervals, etc.. This work highlights why more comprehensive error characterization is important and how to improve the precision of CNNs for spectral modeling, a quantitative task. The results highlight advantages and trade-offs of these techniques that should be considered when addressing such regression tasks with CNNs. Detailed insights into the underlying mechanisms of each technique, and how they interact with other techniques, are discussed in depth.

A comprehensive study on Blood Cancer detection and classification using Convolutional Neural Network

Over the years in object detection several efficient Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) networks, such as DenseNet201, InceptionV3, ResNet152v2, SEresNet152, VGG19, Xception gained significant attention due to their performance. Moreover, CNN paradigms have expanded to transfer learning and ensemble models from original CNN architectures. Research studies suggest that transfer learning and ensemble models are capable of increasing the accuracy of deep learning (DL) models. However, very few studies have conducted comprehensive experiments utilizing these techniques in detecting and localizing blood malignancies. Realizing the gap, this study conducted three experiments; in the first experiment -- six original CNNs were used, in the second experiment -- transfer learning and, in the third experiment a novel ensemble model DIX (DenseNet201, InceptionV3, and Xception) was developed to detect and classify blood cancer. The statistical result suggests that DIX outperformed the original and transfer learning performance, providing an accuracy of 99.12%. However, this study also provides a negative result in the case of transfer learning, as the transfer learning did not increase the accuracy of the original CNNs. Like many other cancers, blood cancer diseases require timely identification for effective treatment plans and increased survival possibilities. The high accuracy in detecting and categorization blood cancer detection using CNN suggests that the CNN model is promising in blood cancer disease detection. This research is significant in the fields of biomedical engineering, computer-aided disease diagnosis, and ML-based disease detection.

HiPrompt: Tuning-free Higher-Resolution Generation with Hierarchical MLLM Prompts

The potential for higher-resolution image generation using pretrained diffusion models is immense, yet these models often struggle with issues of object repetition and structural artifacts especially when scaling to 4K resolution and higher. We figure out that the problem is caused by that, a single prompt for the generation of multiple scales provides insufficient efficacy. In response, we propose HiPrompt, a new tuning-free solution that tackles the above problems by introducing hierarchical prompts. The hierarchical prompts offer both global and local guidance. Specifically, the global guidance comes from the user input that describes the overall content, while the local guidance utilizes patch-wise descriptions from MLLMs to elaborately guide the regional structure and texture generation. Furthermore, during the inverse denoising process, the generated noise is decomposed into low- and high-frequency spatial components. These components are conditioned on multiple prompt levels, including detailed patch-wise descriptions and broader image-level prompts, facilitating prompt-guided denoising under hierarchical semantic guidance. It further allows the generation to focus more on local spatial regions and ensures the generated images maintain coherent local and global semantics, structures, and textures with high definition. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HiPrompt outperforms state-of-the-art works in higher-resolution image generation, significantly reducing object repetition and enhancing structural quality.

Order-preserving pattern mining with forgetting mechanism

Order-preserving pattern (OPP) mining is a type of sequential pattern mining method in which a group of ranks of time series is used to represent an OPP. This approach can discover frequent trends in time series. Existing OPP mining algorithms consider data points at different time to be equally important; however, newer data usually have a more significant impact, while older data have a weaker impact. We therefore introduce the forgetting mechanism into OPP mining to reduce the importance of older data. This paper explores the mining of OPPs with forgetting mechanism (OPF) and proposes an algorithm called OPF-Miner that can discover frequent OPFs. OPF-Miner performs two tasks, candidate pattern generation and support calculation. In candidate pattern generation, OPF-Miner employs a maximal support priority strategy and a group pattern fusion strategy to avoid redundant pattern fusions. For support calculation, we propose an algorithm called support calculation with forgetting mechanism, which uses prefix and suffix pattern pruning strategies to avoid redundant support calculations. The experiments are conducted on nine datasets and 12 alternative algorithms. The results verify that OPF-Miner is superior to other competitive algorithms. More importantly, OPF-Miner yields good clustering performance for time series, since the forgetting mechanism is employed.

FBD-SV-2024: Flying Bird Object Detection Dataset in Surveillance Video

A Flying Bird Dataset for Surveillance Videos (FBD-SV-2024) is introduced and tailored for the development and performance evaluation of flying bird detection algorithms in surveillance videos. This dataset comprises 483 video clips, amounting to 28,694 frames in total. Among them, 23,833 frames contain 28,366 instances of flying birds. The proposed dataset of flying birds in surveillance videos is collected from realistic surveillance scenarios, where the birds exhibit characteristics such as inconspicuous features in single frames (in some instances), generally small sizes, and shape variability during flight. These attributes pose challenges that need to be addressed when developing flying bird detection methods for surveillance videos. Finally, advanced (video) object detection algorithms were selected for experimentation on the proposed dataset, and the results demonstrated that this dataset remains challenging for the algorithms above. The FBD-SV-2024 is now publicly available: Please visit https://github.com/Ziwei89/FBD-SV-2024_github for the dataset download link and related processing scripts.

A Flying Bird Object Detection Method for Surveillance Video

Aiming at the specific characteristics of flying bird objects in surveillance video, such as the typically non-obvious features in single-frame images, small size in most instances, and asymmetric shapes, this paper proposes a Flying Bird Object Detection method for Surveillance Video (FBOD-SV). Firstly, a new feature aggregation module, the Correlation Attention Feature Aggregation (Co-Attention-FA) module, is designed to aggregate the features of the flying bird object according to the bird object's correlation on multiple consecutive frames of images. Secondly, a Flying Bird Object Detection Network (FBOD-Net) with down-sampling followed by up-sampling is designed, which utilizes a large feature layer that fuses fine spatial information and large receptive field information to detect special multi-scale (mostly small-scale) bird objects. Finally, the SimOTA dynamic label allocation method is applied to One-Category object detection, and the SimOTA-OC dynamic label strategy is proposed to solve the difficult problem of label allocation caused by irregular flying bird objects. In this paper, the performance of the FBOD-SV is validated using experimental datasets of flying bird objects in traction substation surveillance videos. The experimental results show that the FBOD-SV effectively improves the detection performance of flying bird objects in surveillance video.

A Noncontact Technique for Wave Measurement Based on Thermal Stereography and Deep Learning

The accurate measurement of the wave field and its spatiotemporal evolution is essential in many hydrodynamic experiments and engineering applications. The binocular stereo imaging technique has been widely used to measure waves. However, the optical properties of indoor water surfaces, including transparency, specular reflection, and texture absence, pose challenges for image processing and stereo reconstruction. This study proposed a novel technique that combined thermal stereography and deep learning to achieve fully noncontact wave measurements. The optical imaging properties of water in the long-wave infrared spectrum were found to be suitable for stereo matching, effectively avoiding the issues in the visible-light spectrum. After capturing wave images using thermal stereo cameras, a reconstruction strategy involving deep learning techniques was proposed to improve stereo matching performance. A generative approach was employed to synthesize a dataset with ground-truth disparity from unannotated infrared images. This dataset was then fed to a pretrained stereo neural network for fine-tuning to achieve domain adaptation. Wave flume experiments were conducted to validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed technique. The final reconstruction results indicated great agreement and high accuracy with a mean bias of less than 2.1% compared with the measurements obtained using wave probes, suggesting that the novel technique effectively measures the spatiotemporal distribution of wave surface in hydrodynamic experiments.

Lithography-free patterning of chalcogenide materials for integrated photonic devices

Chalcogenide material-based integrated photonic devices have garnered widespread attention due to their unique wideband transparency. Despite their recognized CMOS compatibility, the fabrication of these devices relies predominantly on lithography techniques. However, chalcogenide thin films are highly susceptible to oxidation, necessitating customized process flows and complex protective measures during lithography. These requirements are hardly compatible with current commercial CMOS manufacturing platforms designed for silicon photonics, significantly limiting the practical applications of chalcogenide photonic devices. In this work, we ingeniously exploit the ease of oxidation of chalcogenide materials, presenting a novel laser-induced localized oxidation technique for spatial patterning on chalcogenide thin films, enabling concise lithography-free fabrication of chalcogenide integrated photonic devices. Using Sb2S3 as an example, we experimentally demonstrate localized multi-level oxidation with a sizable overall refractive index contrast of 0.7 at near-infrared, featuring a high spatial resolution of 0.6 um. Based on this technique, multiple integrated photonic devices are demonstrated, showing versatile functionalities, including color printing at visible and metasurface-based spatial light modulation at near-infrared regions. Leveraging the inherent phase-change property of Sb2S3, an active Fresnel zone plate, enabling switchable beam focusing, is further demonstrated, indicating the feasibility of concise fabrication of active photonic devices. Our work offers a brand-new modulation dimension for chalcogenide materials and provides a significantly simplified approach for realizing chalcogenide-integrated photonic devices.

Formation of WNL stars for the MW and LMC based on the k-omega model

We adopt a set of second-order differential equations ($k-ω$ model) to handle core convective overshooting in massive stars, simulate the evolution of WNL stars with different metallicities and initial masses, both rotating and non-rotating models, and compare the results with the classical overshooting model. The results indicate that under the same initial conditions, the $k-ω$ model generally produces larger convective cores and wider overshooting regions, thereby increasing the mass ranges and extending the lifetimes of WNL stars, as well as the likelihood of forming WNL stars. The masses and lifetimes of WNL stars both increase with higher metallicities and initial masses. Under higher-metallicity conditions, the two overshooting schemes significantly differ in their impacts on lifetimes of the WNL stars, but insignificant in the mass ranges of the WNL stars. Rotation may drive the formation of WNL stars in low-mass, metal-poor counterparts, with this effect being more pronounced in the OV model. The surface nitrogen of metal-rich WNL stars formed during the MS phase is likely primarily from the CN-cycle, while it may come from both the CN- and NO-cycles for relatively metal-poor counterparts. Our model can effectively explain the distribution of WNL stars in the Milky Way, but appears to have inadequacies in explaining the WNL stars in the LMC.
