Boundedness for the wave equation on $C^1$ stationary axisymmetric perturbations of Kerr

On the full range of sub-extremal Kerr exterior spacetimes we give a new proof of energy boundedness for high-frequency projections of solutions to the wave equation onto trapped frequencies. A key feature of the new estimate is that it circumvents the use of an integrated local energy decay (ILED) statement. As an illustration of the robustness of the estimate, we use it to establish energy boundedness for solutions to the wave equation on stationary and axisymmetric metrics which are merely $C^1$ close to a sub-extremal Kerr spacetime. We show explicitly that such perturbed metrics may possess stably trapped null geodesics, and thus one does not expect ILED statements to hold.

Polynomial time decay for solutions of the Klein--Gordon equation on a subextremal Reissner--Nordstr\"{o}m black hole

We consider the massive scalar field equation $\Box_{g_{RN}} \phi = m^2 \phi$ on any subextremal Reissner--Nordstr\"{o}m exterior metric $g_{RN}$. We prove that solutions with localized initial data decay pointwise-in-time at the polynomial rate $t^{-\frac{5}{6}+\delta}$ in any spatially compact region (including the event horizon), for some small $ \delta\leq \frac{1}{23} $. Moreover, assuming the validity of the Exponent Pair Conjecture on exponential sums in Number Theory, our result implies that decay upper bounds hold at the rate $t^{-\frac{5}{6}+\epsilon}$, for any arbitrarily small $\epsilon>0$. In our previous work, we proved that each fixed angular mode decays at the exact rate $t^{-\frac{5}{6}}$, thus the upper bound $t^{-\frac{5}{6}+\epsilon}$ is sharp, up to a $t^{\epsilon}$ loss. Without the restriction to a fixed angular mode, the solution turns out to have an unbounded Fourier transform due to discrete frequencies associated to quasimodes, and caused by the occurrence of stable timelike trapping. Our analysis nonetheless shows that inverse-polynomial asymptotics in $t$ still hold after summing over all angular modes.

The asymptotics of massive fields on stationary spherically symmetric black holes for all angular momenta

We study the massive scalar field equation $\Box_g \phi = m^2 \phi$ on a stationary and spherically symmetric black hole $g$ (including in particular the Schwarzschild and Reissner--Nordstr\"om black holes in the full sub-extremal range) for solutions $\phi$ projected on a fixed spherical harmonic. Our problem involves the scattering of an attractive long-range potential (Coulomb-like) and thus cannot be treated perturbatively. We prove precise (point-wise) asymptotic tails of the form $t^{-5/6} f(t)+ O(t^{-1+\delta})$, where $f(t)$ is an explicit oscillating profile. Our asymptotics appear to be the first rigorous decay result for a massive scalar field on a black hole. Establishing these asymptotics is also an important step in retrieving the assumptions used in work of the third author regarding the interior of dynamical black holes and Strong Cosmic Censorship.

Boundedness and decay for the Teukolsky equation on Kerr in the full subextremal range $|a|<M$: physical space analysis

This paper concludes the study, initiated by the authors in arXiv:2007.07211, of the Teukolsky equation of spin $\pm 1$ and spin $\pm 2$ on Kerr backgrounds in the full subextremal range of parameters $|a| < M$. In our previous arXiv:2007.07211, we obtained uniform-in-frequency estimates for the ODEs governing separable solutions to the Teukolsky equation. In this paper, by adapting the techniques developed by the first author with Dafermos and Rodnianski for scalar waves, we show that our ODE estimates can be upgraded to estimates for the Teukolsky PDE. In particular, we conclude the proof that solutions of the Teukolsky equation on subextremal Kerr arising from regular initial data remain bounded and decay in time.

Twisted Self-Similarity and the Einstein Vacuum Equations

In the previous works [I. Rodnianski and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Exterior Solution, arXiv:1912.08478 and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Interior Solution, arXiv:2204.09891] we have introduced a new type of self-similarity for the Einstein vacuum equations characterized by the fact that the homothetic vector field may be spacelike on the past light cone of the singularity. In this work we give a systematic treatment of this new self-similarity. In particular, we provide geometric characterizations of spacetimes admitting the new symmetry and show the existence and uniqueness of formal expansions around the past null cone of the singularity which may be considered analogues of the well-known Fefferman--Graham expansions. In combination with previous results, our analysis will show that the twisted self-similar solutions are sufficiently general to describe all possible asymptotic behaviors for spacetimes in the small data regime which are self-similar and whose homothetic vector field is everywhere spacelike on an initial spacelike hypersurface. We present an application of this later fact to the understanding of the global structure of Fefferman--Graham spacetimes and the naked singularity exteriors of [I. Rodnianski and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Exterior Solution, arXiv:1912.08478]. Lastly, we observe that by an amalgamation of techniques from previous works, one may associate true solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations to each of our formal expansions in a suitable region of spacetime.

Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Interior Solution

In a previous work [I. Rodnianski and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Exterior Solution, arXiv:1912.08478] we constructed solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations in 3+1 dimensions which corresponded to the exterior region of a naked singularity. In this work we construct solutions which correspond to the interior region and show that the two solutions may be glued together to produce a naked singularity. Fundamental to our construction is the novel type of self-similarity for the Einstein vacuum equations that we introduced in our previous work and also the study of a new class of quasilinear PDE's of mixed degenerate elliptic-hyperbolic type.

A scattering theory approach to Cauchy horizon instability and applications to mass inflation

Motivated by the strong cosmic censorship conjecture, we study the linear scalar wave equation in the interior of subextremal strictly charged Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes by analyzing a suitably-defined "scattering map" at $0$ frequency. The method can already be demonstrated in the case of spherically symmetric scalar waves on Reissner-Nordstr\"om: we show that assuming suitable ($L^2$-averaged) upper and lower bounds on the event horizon, one can prove ($L^2$-averaged) polynomial lower bound for the solution (1) on any radial null hypersurface transversally intersecting the Cauchy horizon, and (2) along the Cauchy horizon towards timelike infinity. Taken together with known results regarding solutions to the wave equation in the exterior, (1) above in particular provides yet another proof of the linear instability of the Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m Cauchy horizon. As an application of (2) above, we prove a conditional mass inflation result for a nonlinear system, namely, the Einstein-Maxwell-(real)-scalar field system in spherical symmetry. For this model, it is known that for a generic class of Cauchy data $\mathcal G$, the maximal globally hyperbolic future developments are $C^2$-future-inextendible. We prove that if a (conjectural) improved decay result holds in the exterior region, then for the maximal globally hyperbolic developments arising from initial data in $\mathcal G$, the Hawking mass blows up identically on the Cauchy horizon.

Boundedness and decay for the Teukolsky equation on Kerr in the full subextremal range $|a|<M$: frequency space analysis

This paper is the first of a series regarding the Teukolsky equation of spin $\pm 1$ and spin $\pm 2$ on Kerr backgrounds in the full subextremal range of parameters $|a|<M$. In the present paper, we study fixed frequency solutions of the transformed system of equations introduced by Dafermos, Holzegel and Rodnianski, obtaining estimates which are uniform in the separation parameters. A corollary of our result, to be laid out in the second paper of the series, is that solutions of the Teukolsky equation on subextremal Kerr arising from regular initial data remain bounded and decay in time. This is a key step in establishing the full linear stability of Kerr under electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations. Our estimates can also be applied to understanding more delicate features of the Teukolsky equation, such as their scattering properties.

Naked Singularities for the Einstein Vacuum Equations: The Exterior Solution

In this work we initiate the mathematical study of naked singularities for the Einstein vacuum equations in $3+1$ dimensions by constructing solutions which correspond to the exterior region of a naked singularity. A key element is our introduction of a new type of self-similarity for the Einstein vacuum equations. Connected to this is a new geometric twisting phenomenon which plays the leading role in singularity formation. Prior to this work, the only known examples of naked singularities were the solutions constructed by Christodoulou for the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar-field system, as well as other solutions explored numerically for either the spherically symmetric Einstein equations coupled to suitable matter models or for the Einstein equations in higher dimensions.

Rough initial data and the strength of the blue-shift instability on cosmological black holes with $\Lambda > 0$

We consider the wave equation on Reissner-Nordstr\"om-de Sitter and more generally Kerr-Newman-de Sitter black hole spacetimes with $\Lambda>0$. The strength of the blue-shift instability associated to the Cauchy horizon of these spacetimes has been the subject of much discussion, since-in contrast to the $\Lambda=0$ case-the competition with the decay associated to the region between the event and cosmological horizons is delicate. Of particular interest is the question as to whether generic, admissible initial data posed on a Cauchy surface lead to solutions whose local energy blows up at the Cauchy horizon, for this statement holds in the $\Lambda = 0$ case and would correspond precisely to the blow up required by Christodoulou's formulation of strong cosmic censorship. Some recent heuristic work suggests that the answer is in general negative for solutions arising from sufficiently smooth data, such that for all such data, the arising solutions have finite local energy at the Cauchy horizon. In this short note, we shall show in contrast that, by slightly relaxing the smoothness assumption on initial data, we are able to prove the analogue of the Christodoulou statement in the affirmative, i.e. we show that for generic data in our allowed class, the local energy blow-up statement indeed holds at the Cauchy horizon, for all subextremal black hole parameter ranges. We present two distinct proofs. Our slightly enlarged class of initial data is still sufficiently regular to ensure both stability and decay properties in the region between the event and cosmological horizons as well as the boundedness and continuous extendibility beyond the Cauchy horizon. This suggests thus that it is finally this class which may provide the correct setting to formulate the genericity condition in strong cosmic censorship.

A scattering theory for linear waves on the interior of Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes

We develop a scattering theory for the linear wave equation $\Box_g \psi = 0$ on the interior of Reissner-Nordstr\"om black holes, connecting the fixed frequency picture to the physical space picture. Our main result gives the existence, uniqueness and asymptotic completeness of finite energy scattering states. The past and future scattering states are represented as suitable traces of the solution $\psi$ on the bifurcate event and Cauchy horizons. The heart of the proof is to show that after separation of variables one has uniform boundedness of the reflection and transmission coefficients of the resulting radial o.d.e. over all frequencies $\omega$ and $\ell$. This is non-trivial because the natural $T$ conservation law is sign-indefinite in the black hole interior. In the physical space picture, our results imply that the Cauchy evolution from the event horizon to the Cauchy horizon is a Hilbert space isomorphism, where the past (resp. future) Hilbert space is defined by the finiteness of the degenerate $T$ energy fluxes on both components of the event (resp. Cauchy) horizon. Finally, we prove that, in contrast to the above, for a generic set of cosmological constants $\Lambda$, there is no analogous finite $T$ energy scattering theory for either the linear wave equation or the Klein-Gordon equation with conformal mass on the (anti-) de Sitter-Reissner-Nordstr\"om interior.

The Asymptotically Self-Similar Regime for the Einstein Vacuum Equations

We develop a local theory for the construction of singular spacetimes in all spacetime dimensions which become asymptotically self-similar as the singularity is approached. The techniques developed also allow us to construct and classify exact self-similar solutions which correspond to the formal asymptotic expansions of Fefferman and Graham's ambient metric.

Time-Translation Invariance of Scattering Maps and Blue-Shift Instabilities on Kerr Black Hole Spacetimes

In this paper, we provide an elementary, unified treatment of two distinct blue-shift instabilities for the scalar wave equation on a fixed Kerr black hole background: the celebrated blue-shift at the Cauchy horizon (familiar from the strong cosmic censorship conjecture) and the time-reversed red-shift at the event horizon (relevant in classical scattering theory). Our first theorem concerns the latter and constructs solutions to the wave equation on Kerr spacetimes such that the radiation field along the future event horizon vanishes and the radiation field along future null infinity decays at an arbitrarily fast polynomial rate, yet, the local energy of the solution is infinite near any point on the future event horizon. Our second theorem constructs solutions to the wave equation on rotating Kerr spacetimes such that the radiation field along the past event horizon (extended into the black hole) vanishes and the radiation field along past null infinity decays at an arbitrarily fast polynomial rate, yet, the local energy of the solution is infinite near any point on the Cauchy horizon. The results make essential use of the scattering theory developed in [M. Dafermos, I. Rodnianski and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, A scattering theory for the wave equation on Kerr black hole exteriors, preprint (2014) available at \url{http://arxiv.org/abs/1412.8379}] and exploit directly the time-translation invariance of the scattering map and the non-triviality of the transmission map.

Stationary axisymmetric black holes with matter

We provide a geometric framework for the construction of non-vacuum black holes whose metrics are stationary and axisymmetric. Under suitable assumptions we show that the Einstein equations reduce to an Einstein-harmonic map type system and analyze the compatibility of the resulting equations. This framework will be fundamental to our forthcoming construction of metric-stationary axisymmetric bifurcations of Kerr solving the Einstein--Klein--Gordon system, and as such, we include specializations of all of our formulas to the case of a time-periodic massive scalar field.

Time-Periodic Einstein--Klein--Gordon Bifurcations of Kerr

We construct one-parameter families of solutions to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations bifurcating off the Kerr solution such that the underlying family of spacetimes are each an asymptotically flat, stationary, axisymmetric, black hole spacetime, and such that the corresponding scalar fields are non-zero and time-periodic. An immediate corollary is that for these Klein--Gordon masses, the Kerr family is not asymptotically stable as a solution to the Einstein--Klein--Gordon equations.

A scattering theory for the wave equation on Kerr black hole exteriors

We develop a definitive physical-space scattering theory for the scalar wave equation on Kerr exterior backgrounds in the general subextremal case |a|<M. In particular, we prove results corresponding to "existence and uniqueness of scattering states" and "asymptotic completeness" and we show moreover that the resulting "scattering matrix" mapping radiation fields on the past horizon and past null infinity to radiation fields on the future horizon and future null infinity is a bounded operator. The latter allows us to give a time-domain theory of superradiant reflection. The boundedness of the scattering matrix shows in particular that the maximal amplification of solutions associated to ingoing finite-energy wave packets on past null infinity is bounded. On the frequency side, this corresponds to the novel statement that the suitably normalised reflection and transmission coefficients are uniformly bounded independently of the frequency parameters. We further complement this with a demonstration that superradiant reflection indeed amplifies the energy radiated to future null infinity of suitable wave-packets as above. The results make essential use of a refinement of our recent proof [M. Dafermos, I. Rodnianski and Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Decay for solutions of the wave equation on Kerr exterior spacetimes III: the full subextremal case |a|<M, arXiv:1402.6034] of boundedness and decay for solutions of the Cauchy problem so as to apply in the class of solutions where only a degenerate energy is assumed finite. We show in contrast that the analogous scattering maps cannot be defined for the class of finite non-degenerate energy solutions. This is due to the fact that the celebrated horizon red-shift effect acts as a blue-shift instability when solving the wave equation backwards.

Decay for solutions of the wave equation on Kerr exterior spacetimes III: The full subextremal case |a| < M

This paper concludes the series begun in [M. Dafermos and I. Rodnianski, Decay for solutions of the wave equation on Kerr exterior spacetimes I-II: the cases |a| << M or axisymmetry, arXiv:1010.5132], providing the complete proof of definitive boundedness and decay results for the scalar wave equation on Kerr backgrounds in the general subextremal |a| < M case without symmetry assumptions. The essential ideas of the proof (together with explicit constructions of the most difficult multiplier currents) have been announced in our survey [M. Dafermos and I. Rodnianski, The black hole stability problem for linear scalar perturbations, in Proceedings of the 12th Marcel Grossmann Meeting on General Relativity, T. Damour et al (ed.), World Scientific, Singapore, 2011, pp. 132-189, arXiv:1010.5137]. Our proof appeals also to the quantitative mode-stability proven in [Y. Shlapentokh-Rothman, Quantitative Mode Stability for the Wave Equation on the Kerr Spacetime, arXiv:1302.6902, to appear, Ann. Henri Poincare], together with a streamlined continuity argument in the parameter a, appearing here for the first time. While serving as Part III of a series, this paper repeats all necessary notations so that it can be read independently of previous work.

Quantitative Mode Stability for the Wave Equation on the Kerr Spacetime

We give a quantitative refinement and simple proofs of mode stability type statements for the wave equation on Kerr backgrounds in the full sub-extremal range (|a| < M). As an application, we are able to quantitatively control the energy flux along the horizon and null infinity and establish integrated local energy decay for solutions to the wave equation in any bounded-frequency regime.
