The Tokyo Axion Helioscope

The Tokyo Axion Helioscope experiment aims to detect axions which are produced in the solar core. The helioscope uses a strong magnetic field in order to convert axions into X-ray photons and has a mounting to follow the sun very accurately. The photons are detected by an X-ray detector which is made of 16 PIN-photodiodes. In addition, a gas container and a gas regulation system is adopted for recovering the coherence between axions and photons in the conversion region giving sensitivity to axions with masses up to 2 eV. In this paper, we report on the technical detail of the Tokyo Axion Helioscope.

Simultaneous magneto-optical trapping of lithium and ytterbium atoms towards production of ultracold polar molecules

We have successfully implemented the first simultaneous magneto-optical trapping (MOT) of lithium ($^6$Li) and ytterbium ($^{174}$Yb) atoms, towards production of ultracold polar molecules of LiYb. For this purpose, we developed the dual atomic oven which contains both atomic species as an atom source and successfully observed the spectra of the Li and Yb atoms in the atomic beams from the dual atomic oven. We constructed the vacuum chamber including the glass cell with the windows made of zinc selenium (ZnSe) for the CO$_2$ lasers, which are the useful light sources of optical trapping for evaporative and sympathetic cooling. Typical atom numbers and temperatures in the compressed MOT are 7$\times10^3$ atoms, 640 $\mu$K for $^6$Li, 7$\times10^4$ atoms and 60 $\mu$K for $^{174}$Yb, respectively.

Paramagnetic Faraday rotation with spin-polarized ytterbium atoms

We report observation of the paramagnetic Faraday rotation of spin-polarized ytterbium (Yb) atoms. As the atomic samples, we used an atomic beam, released atoms from a magneto-optical trap (MOT), and trapped atoms in a far-off-resonant trap (FORT). Since Yb is diamagnetic and includes a spin-1/2 isotope, it is an ideal sample for the spin physics, such as quantum non-demolition measurement of spin (spin QND), for example. From the results of the rotation angle, we confirmed that the atoms were almost perfectly polarized.

Search for sub-electronvolt solar axions using coherent conversion of axions into photons in magnetic field and gas helium

A search for solar axions has been performed using an axion helioscope which is equipped with a 2.3m-long 4T superconducting magnet, PIN-photodiode X-ray detectors, and a telescope mount mechanism to track the sun. In addition, a gas container to hold dispersion-matching gas has been developed and a mass region up to m_a=0.27eV was newly explored. From the absence of any evidence, analysis sets a limit on axion-photon coupling constant to be $g_{aγγ}<6.8-10.9\times10^{-10}GeV^{-1}$ for the axion mass of 0.05<m_a<0.27eV at 95% confidence level, which is more stringent than the limit inferred from the solar-age consideration. This result gives currently the most stringent observational limit on the existence of solar axions in this mass region.

Recent results from the Tokyo axion helioscope experiment

We have searched for axions which could have been produced in the solar core using an axion helioscope with a 2.3m-long 4T superconducting magnet. Axion mass region up to m_a=0.26eV was newly explored by introducing dispersion-matching gas. Preliminary analysis sets a limit on axion-photon coupling constant to be less than (6.4--9.6)e-10 GeV^{-1} (95%CL) for this mass region from the absence of the axion signal. This is more stringent than the limit inferred from the solar age consideration and also more stringent than the recent helioseismological bound.
