Hysteretic current-voltage characteristics and resistance switching at an epitaxial oxide Schottky junction SrRuO$_{3}$/SrTi$_{0.99}$Nb$_{0.01}$O$_{3}$

Transport properties have been studied for a perovskite heterojunction consisting of SrRuO$_{3}$ (SRO) film epitaxially grown on SrTi$_{0.99}$Nb$_{0.01}$O$_{3}$ (Nb:STO) substrate. The SRO/Nb:STO interface exhibits rectifying current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics agreeing with those of a Schottky junction composed of a deep work-function metal (SRO) and an $n$-type semiconductor (Nb:STO). A hysteresis appears in the $I$-$V$ characteristics, where high resistance and low resistance states are induced by reverse and forward bias stresses, respectively. The resistance switching is also triggered by applying short voltage pulses of 1 $μ$s - 10 ms duration.

Characteristic Behavior of Toroidal Carbon Nanotubes: Kinematics of Persistent Currents

The electrical properties of a carbon nanotube depend strongly on its lattice structure as defined by chiral and translational vectors. A toroidal shape for a nanotube allows various twisted structures to exist along the direction of the tube axis. We theoretically investigate the kinematics of conducting electrons and persistent currents in toroidal carbon nanotubes. We show that persistent currents exhibit a special characteristic of the cylindrical lattice structure in twisted cases. We discuss the possibilities that the twist alters the period of the current to one half the flux quantum and that the current flows without an external magnetic field.

Fractional flux periodicity in tori made of square lattice

This paper describes a study on fractional flux periodicity of the ground state in planar systems made from a square lattice whose boundary is compacted into a torus. It is pointed out that, in the long length and large diameter limit of a torus, the ground-state energy and persistent currents show a fractional period of the fundamental unit of magnetic flux depending on the twist around the torus axis. We discuss the possible relationship between the twist and genus of a torus, and comment on fractional flux periodicity in a cylinder.

Fractional flux periodicity of a twisted planar square lattice

We present fractional flux periodicity in the ground state of planar systems made of a square lattice whose boundary is compacted into a torus. The ground-state energy shows a fractional period of the fundamental unit of magnetic flux depending on the twist around the torus axis.

Aharonov-Bohm effect in higher genus materials

Flux periodicity of conducting electrons on a closed surface with genus two $g=2$ (double torus) are investigated theoretically. We examine flux periodicity of the ground-state energy and of the wave functions as a function of applied magnetic field. A fundamental flux period of the ground-state energy is twice a fundamental unit of magnetic flux for uniformly applied magnetic field, which is shown to be valid for a simple ladder geometry and carbon double torus. Flux periodicity of the wave functions in a double torus is complicate as compared with a simple torus ($g=1$), and an adiabatic addition of magnetic fluxes does not provide a good quantum number for the energy eigenstates. The results are extended to higher genus materials and the implications of the results are discussed.

Effective Screening of Localized Charged Perturbations in Metallic Nanotubes: Roles of Massive Bands

The massive-band effects on screening behavior of metallic carbon nanotubes are theoretically investigated using two different methods; continuous and lattice quantum theories. Both approaches show screening of a localized external perturbation with an effective screening length of the order of the nanotube diameter. Calculating the nonlinear deformation of the local density of states near the charged perturbation, we show that the perturbative effects of the massive bands are effectively canceled by direct massive band interactions, such that a good agreement between the two methods can be achieved. The effective screening is important in nanoscale integration of nanotube-based electronic devices.

Statics and dynamics of phase segregation in multicomponent fermion gas

We investigate the statics and dynamics of spatial phase segregation process of a mixture of fermion atoms in a harmonic trap using the density functional theory. The kinetic energy of the fermion gas is written in terms of the density and its gradients. Several cases have been studied by neglecting the gradient terms (the Thomas-Fermi limit) which are then compared with the Monte-Carlo results using the full gradient corrected kinetic energy. A linear instability analysis has been performed using the random-phase approximation. Near the onset of instability, the fastest unstable mode for spinodal decomposition is found to occur at $q=0$. However, in the strong coupling limit, many more modes with $q\approx K_F$ decay with comparable time scales.

Realization of an ultra-high magnetic field on a nano-scale

In tunnel junctions of which at least one side is a ferromagnet, very large magnetic polarization change ($\approx 0.1 μ_B$) and splitting of the spin up and spin down Fermi energy ($\approx 0.1 eV$) can be created under steady state finite current conditions (bias voltage $\approx$ 1 volt). This is {\bf much higher} than can be created by the highest magnetic field on earth. We illustrate this with a specific calculation of a recently observed very large Hall effect in the Al side of a Co-I-Al tunnel junction. Other recent experiments that support this idea are discussed.
