The unusual spectrum of the X-ray transient source XRISM J174610.8-290021 near the Galactic center

The Galactic center region was observed with the XRISM X-ray observatory during the performance verification phase in 2024 and a point-like X-ray source was detected with the X-ray imager Xtend at a position of (RA, Dec)=(17h46m10.8s, -29{\deg}00'21''), which is thus named XRISM J174610.8-290021. This source was bright in February to March and showed time variations in count rate by more than one order of magnitude in one week. The 2-10 keV X-ray luminosity was ~$10^{35}$ erg/s for the assumed distance of 8 kpc. However, after six months, it was below the detection limit. We found a hint of periodicity of 1537 s from timing analysis. The XRISM/Xtend spectrum has emission lines from helium-like iron (Fe He$\alpha$) at 6.7 keV and hydrogen-like iron (Fe Ly$\alpha$) at 6.97 keV; their intensity ratio is unusual with the latter being four times stronger than the former. If the emission is of thermal origin, the ionization temperature estimated from the iron-line intensity ratio is ~30 keV, which is inconsistent with the electron temperature estimated from the thermal bremsstrahlung, ~7 keV. Spectral models of magnetic cataclysmic variables, which are often seen in the Galactic center in this luminosity range, are found to fail to reproduce the obtained spectrum. By contrast, we found that the spectrum is well reproduced with the models of low-mass X-ray binaries containing a neutron star plus two narrow Gaussian lines. We consider that the source is intrinsically bright reaching $10^{37}$ erg/s, but is blocked from direct view due to a high inclination and only the scattered emission is visible. The photoionized plasma above the accretion disk with an ionization parameter of ~$10^{5}$ may explain the unusual iron line ratio. We further discuss the potential contribution of point sources of the type of XRISM J174610.8-290021 to the diffuse Galactic center X-ray emission.

FLAG Review 2024

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, $D$-meson, $B$-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor $f_+(0)$ arising in the semileptonic $K \to \pi$ transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay-constant ratio $f_K/f_\pi$ and its consequences for the CKM matrix elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. We review the determination of the $B_K$ parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four $B$ parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for $m_c$ and $m_b$ as well as those for the decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters of charmed and bottom mesons and baryons. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$. We review the determinations of nucleon charges from the matrix elements of both isovector and flavour-diagonal axial, scalar and tensor local quark bilinears, and momentum fraction, helicity moment and the transversity moment from one-link quark bilinears. We also review determinations of scale-setting quantities. Finally, in this review we have added a new section on the general definition of the low-energy limit of the Standard Model.

Chiral susceptibility and axial U(1) anomaly near the (pseudo-)critical temperature

We investigate relations between the chiral susceptibility and axial $U(1)$ anomaly in lattice QCD at high temperatures. Employing the exactly chiral symmetric Dirac operator, we separate the purely axial $U(1)$ breaking effect in the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilites in a theoretically clean manner. Preliminary results for two-flavor lattice QCD near the critical temperature are presented.

$B \to D^*\ell\nu_\ell$ semileptonic form factors from lattice QCD with M\"obius domain-wall quarks

We calculate the form factors for the $B \to D^*\ell\nu_\ell$ decay in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD. For all quark flavors, we employ the M\"obius domain-wall action, which preserves chiral symmetry to a good precision. Our gauge ensembles are generated at three lattice cutoffs $a^{-1} \sim 2.5$, 3.6 and 4.5 GeV with pion masses as low as $M_\pi \sim 230$ MeV. The physical lattice size $L$ satisfies the condition $M_\pi L \geq 4$ to control finite volume effects (FVEs), while we simulate a smaller size at the smallest $M_\pi$ to directly examine FVEs. The bottom quark masses are chosen in a range from the physical charm quark mass to $0.7 a^{-1}$ to control discretization effects. We extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and physical quark masses based on heavy meson chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order. Then the recoil parameter dependence is parametrized using a model independent form leading to our estimate of the decay rate ratio between the tau ($\ell = \tau$) and light lepton ($\ell = e,\mu$) channels $R(D^*) = 0.252(22)$ in the Standard Model. A simultaneous fit with recent data from the Belle experiment yields $|V_{cb}| = 39.19(91)\times 10^{-3}$, which is consistent with previous exclusive determinations, and shows good consistency in the kinematical distribution of the differential decay rate between the lattice and experimental data.

A novel technique for the measurement of the avalanche fluctuations of a GEM stack using a gating foil

We have developed a novel technique for the measurement of the size of avalanche fluctuations of gaseous detectors using a gating device (gating foil) prepared for the time projection chamber in the international linear collider experiment (ILD-TPC). In addition to the gating function, the gating foil is capable of controlling the average fraction of drift electrons detected after gas amplification. The signal charge width and shape (skewness) for electron-ion pairs created by a pulsed UV laser as a function of the transmission rate of the gating foil can be used to determine the relative variance of gas gain for single electrons. We present the measurement principle and the result obtained using a stack of gas electron multipliers (GEMs) operated in a gas mixture of Ar-CF$_4$(3%)-isobutane(2%) at atmospheric pressure. Also discussed is the influence of the avalanche fluctuations on the spatial resolution of the ILD-TPC.

Study of the $h \gamma Z$ coupling at the ILC

We studied the $e^+e^- \to h \gamma$ process at the full simulation level, using a realistic detector model to study the feasibility to constrain the SM effective field theory (SMEFT) $h \gamma Z$ coefficient, $\zeta_{AZ}$, at the ILC. Assuming International Large Detector (ILD) operating at 250 GeV ILC, it is shown that the $e^+e^- \to h\gamma$ process is much more difficult to observe than naively expected if there is no BSM contribution. We thus put upper limits on the cross section of this process. The expected combined 95% C.L. upper limits for full polarisations $(P_{e^-}, P_{e^+})=(-100\%, +100\%)$ and $(+100\%, -100\%)$ are $\frac{\sigma_{h \gamma}^{L}}{\sigma_{S M}^{L}}<5.0$ and $\frac{\sigma_{h \gamma}^{R}}{\sigma_{S M}^{R}}<61.9$, respectively. The resultant 95% C.L. limit on $\zeta_{AZ}$ is $-0.020<\zeta_{A Z}<0.003$.

$B\!\to\!D^{(*)}\ell\nu$ semileptonic decays in lattice QCD with domain-wall heavy quarks

We calculate the $B \to D^{(*)} \ell \nu$ form factors in 2+1 flavor relativistic lattice QCD by employing the M\"obius domain-wall action for all quark flavors. Our simulations are carried out at lattice cut-offs $a^{-1} \sim 2.5$, 3.6 and 4.5 GeV with the bottom quark masses up to 0.7 $a^{-1}$ to control discretization effects. We extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and physical quark masses, and discuss systematic uncertainties of the form factors.

What is chiral susceptibility probing?

In the early days of QCD, the axial $U(1)$ anomaly was considered as a trigger for the breaking of the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry through topological excitations of gluon fields. However, it has been a challenge for lattice QCD to quantify the effect. In this work, we simulate QCD at high temperatures with chiral fermions. The exact chiral symmetry enables us to separate the contribution from the axial $U(1)$ breaking from others among the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels. Our result in two-flavor QCD indicates that the chiral susceptibility, which is conventionally used as a probe for $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ breaking, is actually dominated by the axial $U(1)$ breaking at temperatures $T\ge 165$ MeV.

Symmetries of temporal correlators and the nature of hot QCD

The temperature of the chiral restoration phase transition at 130 MeV as well as the temperature of the center symmetry ("deconfinement") phase transition in a pure glue theory at 300 MeV are two independent temperatures and their interplay determines a structure of different regimes of hot QCD. Given a chiral spin symmetry of the color charge and of the chromoelectric interaction we can conclude from observed symmetries of spatial and temporal correlators of N_F=2 QCD with domain wall Dirac operator at physical quark masses that above the chiral symmetry restoration crossover around T_pc but below rougly 3T_pc there should exist an intermediate regime (the stringy fluid) of hot QCD that is characterized by approximate chiral spin symmetry and where degrees of freedom are chirally symmetric quarks bound into color singlet objects by the chromoelectric field. Above this intermediate regime the color charge and the chromoelectric field are Debye screened and one observes a transition to QGP with magnetic confinement.

Study of the $h \gamma Z$ coupling at the ILC

We studied the $e^+e^- \to h \gamma $ process at the International Linear Collider (ILC) at $\sqrt{s}=250$ GeV, based on the full detector simulation of the International Large Detector (ILD). This process is loop-induced in the Standard Model (SM) and is sensitive to new physics which alters $h \gamma \gamma$ or $h \gamma Z$ coupling. We performed the analysis by employing the leading signal channels with $h \to b \bar{b}$ and $h \to WW^*$ and including full SM background processes. The results are obtained for two scenarios of beam polarisations each with an integrated luminosity of 900 fb$^{-1}$. We found the expected significance of the SM signal is 0.40$\sigma$ for $P(e^-,e^+)=(-0.8,+0.3)$ (the left-handed polarisation), and 0.06$\sigma$ for $P(e^-,e^+)=(+0.8,-0.3)$ (the right-handed polarisation). The bounds on new physics effects are reported as the 95% C.L. upper limit for the cross-section of $e^+e^- \to h \gamma$: $\sigma_{h\gamma}^L <$ 1.8 fb and $\sigma_{h\gamma}^R <$ 0.5 fb respectively for left- and right-handed polarisations. The constraints on effective $h\gamma Z$ couplings are to be further studied.

Role of axial U(1) anomaly in chiral susceptibility of QCD at high temperature

The chiral susceptibility, or the first derivative of the chiral condensate with respect to the quark mass, is often used as a probe for the QCD phase transition since the chiral condensate is an order parameter of $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry breaking. However, the chiral condensate also breaks the axial $U(1)$ symmetry, which is usually not paid attention to as it is already broken by anomaly and apparently gives little impact on the transition. We investigate the susceptibilities in the scalar and pseudoscalar channels in order to quantify how much the axial $U(1)$ breaking contributes to the chiral phase transition. Employing a chirally symmetric lattice Dirac operator, and its eigenmode decomposition, we separate the axial $U(1)$ breaking effects from others. Our result in two-flavor QCD indicates that both of the connected and disconnected chiral susceptibilities are dominated by the axial $U(1)$ breaking at temperatures $T\gtrsim 190$ MeV after the quadratically divergent constant is subtracted.

Isotropic parallel antiferromagnetism in the magnetic-field-induced charge-ordered state of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ caused by $p$-$f$ hybridization

Nature of the field-induced charge ordered phase (phase II) of SmRu$_4$P$_{12}$ has been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction (RXD) and polarized neutron diffraction (PND), focusing on the relationship between the atomic displacements and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) moments of Sm. From the analysis of the interference between the non-resonant Thomson scattering and the resonant magnetic scattering, combined with the spectral function obtained from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, it is shown that the AFM moment of Sm prefers to be parallel to the field ($m_{\text{AF}} \parallel H$), giving rise to large and small moment sites around which the P$_{12}$ and Ru cage contract and expand, respectively. This is associated with the formation of the staggered ordering of the $\Gamma_7$-like and $\Gamma_8$-like crystal-field states, providing a strong piece of evidence for the charge order. PND was also performed to obtain complementary and unambiguous conclusion. In addition, isotropic and continuous nature of the phase II is demonstrated by the field-direction invariance of the interference spectrum in RXD. Crucial role of the $p$-$f$ hybridization is shown by resonant soft x-ray diffraction at the P $K$-edge ($1s\leftrightarrow 3p$), where we detected a resonance due to the spin polarized $3p$ orbitals reflecting the AFM order of Sm.

Study of the axial U(1) anomaly at high temperature with lattice chiral fermions

We investigate the axial U(1) anomaly of two-flavor QCD at temperatures 190--330 MeV. In order to preserve precise chiral symmetry on the lattice, we employ the Mobius domain-wall fermion action as well as overlap fermion action implemented with a stochastic reweighting technique. Compared to our previous studies, we reduce the lattice spacing to 0.07 fm, simulate larger multiple volumes to estimate finite size effect, and take more than four quark mass points, including one below physical point to investigate the chiral limit. We measure the topological susceptibility, axial U(1) susceptibility, and examine the degeneracy of U(1) partners in meson and baryon correlators. All the data above the critical temperature indicate that the axial U(1) violation is consistent with zero within statistical errors. The quark mass dependence suggests disappearance of the U(1) anomaly at a rate comparable to that of the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R symmetry breaking.

$B\!\to\!D^{(*)}\ell\nu$ form factors from lattice QCD with relativistic heavy quarks

We report on our calculation of the B \to D^(*) \ell \nu form factors in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD. The M\"obius domain-wall action is employed for light, strange, charm and bottom quarks. At lattice cutoffs 1/a \sim 2.4, 3.6 and 4.5 GeV, we simulate bottom quark masses up to 0.7/a to control discretization errors. The pion mass is as low as 230 MeV. We extrapolate the form factors to the continuum limit and physical quark masses, and make a comparison with recent phenomenological analyses.

Symmetries of the light hadron spectrum in high temperature QCD

Properties of QCD matter change significantly around the chiral crossover temperature, and the effects on $U(1)_A$ and topological susceptibilities, as well as the meson spectrum have been studied with much care. Baryons and the effect of parity doubling in this temperature range have been analyzed previously by various other groups employing different setups. Here we construct suitable operators to investigate chiral and axial $U(1)_A$ symmetries in the baryon spectrum. Measurements for different volumes and quark-masses are done with two flavors of chirally symmetric domain-wall fermions at temperatures above the critical one. The possibility of emergent $SU(4)$ and $SU(2)_{CS}$ symmetries is discussed.

Chiral-spin symmetry of the meson spectral function above $T_c$

Recently, via calculation of spatial correlators of $J=0,1$ isovector operators using a chirally symmetric Dirac operator within $N_F=2$ QCD, it has been found that QCD at temperatures $T_c - 3 T_c$ is approximately $SU(2)_{CS}$ and $SU(4)$ symmetric. The latter symmetry suggests that the physical degrees of freedom are chirally symmetric quarks bound by the chromoelectric field into color singlet objects without chromomagnetic effects. This regime of QCD has been referred to as a Stringy Fluid. Here we calculate correlators for propagation in time direction at a temperature slightly above $T_c$ and find the same approximate symmetries. This means that the meson spectral function is chiral-spin and $SU(4)$ symmetric.

Measurement of the electron transmission rate of the gating foil for the TPC of the ILC experiment

We have developed a gating foil for the time projection chamber envisaged as a central tracker for the international linear collider experiment. It has a structure similar to the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) with a higher optical aperture ratio and functions as an ion gate without gas amplification. The transmission rate for electrons was measured in a counting mode for a wide range of the voltages applied across the foil using an $^{55}$Fe source and a laser in the absence of a magnetic field. The blocking power of the foil against positive ions was estimated from the electron transmissions.
