Large data global solution of the 3D RVM system with cylindrical symmetry II: Pointwise estimates

This is the second part of a two-paper sequence establishing the global existence of $3D$ relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system (RVM) for arbitrarily large smooth localized initial data with cylindrical symmetry. In Part II, independently of the results in Part I, we establish two sets of pointwise estimates for the localized electromagnetic field. This is achieved by exploiting cylindrical symmetry, conservation laws, smoothing effects, and structural observations of the electromagnetic field, including its null structure, double null structure, and the magnetic field dichotomy. The first set provides a uniform upper bound for the localized electromagnetic field. The second set offers an upper bound that depends on the distance from the z-axis, providing better control when the electromagnetic field is located further away from the $z$-axis. These two sets of estimates are fundamental to the iterative smoothing scheme (ISS), which is originated and inspired by the work of Klainerman-Staffilani(2002). These two sets were treated as black boxes in Part I. A defining feature of these estimates is that they are assessed concerning the magnitude of the oscillation phase over characteristic time, effectively quantifying the smoothing effect. It follows from these estimates that cases without any smoothing effect are error terms. Addressing this constitutes the initial challenge in the bootstrap argument.

ITP-STDP: A Hardware-Efficient Intrinsic-Timing Power-of-Two Synaptic Learning Engine for On-Chip SNNs

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have the potential to emerge as the third generation of neural networks and have attracted increasing attention across a wide range of applications. However, the large number of synaptic connections in SNNs leads to intensive weight-update computation by on-chip learning algorithms during training, resulting in substantial hardware resource utilization and energy consumption. Among existing SNN learning algorithms, spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) is one of the most extensively studied and widely adopted, serving as a fundamental learning component in SNNs. To address the hardware and energy overheads associated with SNN training, this paper presents intrinsic-timing power-of-two STDP (ITP-STDP) and its corresponding prototype learning engine hardware architecture. The proposed design is evaluated through a dedicated mean-field synaptic drift model for dynamical analysis and further validated across SNN networks of different scales and datasets. It is further implemented on both ASIC and FPGA platforms and compared with state-of-the-art approaches, including the original STDP and more complex STDP variants. The results demonstrate superior energy efficiency, higher operating speed, and substantially lower hardware resource utilization, as the proposed design eliminates most of the computational overhead of STDP through both algorithmic and hardware-level optimizations. On the FPGA platform, the proposed design improves energy efficiency by 4.5$\times$ to 219.8$\times$ over the compared designs. On the ASIC platform, the proposed design achieves a 4.8$\times$ to 22.01$\times$ speedup while consuming only 1.2% to 3.3% of the area required by prior works.

Decay estimates of wave equations in un-isotropic media

We prove decay estimates for solutions to non-isotropic linear systems of wave equations. The defining feature of these estimates is that they depend only on the commutation properties of the system with the scaling vector field. As application we give two surprisingly simple proofs for small data global regularity results non-isotropic systems of wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$ with cubic semilinear nonlinearities. We hope that the techniques presented here are relevant for the more difficult and important case of biaxial refraction in crystal optics.

Global solution of 2D hyperbolic liquid crystal system for small initial data

We prove the global stability of small perturbation near the constant equilibrium for the two dimensional simplified Ericksen-Leslie's hyperbolic system for incompressible liquid crystal model, where the direction function of liquid crystal molecules satisfies a wave map equation with an acoustical metric. This improves the almost global existence result by Huang-Jiang-Zhao. As byproducts, we obtain the sharp (same as the linear solution) decay estimates for both the heat part and the wave part. Moreover the nonlinear wave part scatters to a linear solution as time goes to infinity. This paper's main contribution is the discovery of a novel null structure within the velocity equation's wave-type quadratic self-interaction. This structure compensates the insufficient decay rate in 2D, which previously hindered the establishment of global regularity for small data.

On the stability of homogeneous equilibria in the Vlasov-Poisson system on $\mathbb{R}^3$

The goal of this article is twofold. First, we investigate the linearized Vlasov-Poisson system around a family of spatially homogeneous equilibria in $\mathbb{R}^3$ (the unconfined setting). Our analysis follows classical strategies from physics and their subsequent mathematical extensions. The main novelties are a unified treatment of a broad class of analytic equilibria and the study of a class of generalized Poisson equilibria. For the former, this provides a detailed description of the associated Green's functions, including in particular precise dissipation rates (which appear to be new), whereas for the latter we exhibit explicit formulas. Second, we review the main result and ideas in our recent work on the full global nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Poisson equilibrium in $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Global solution of 3D anisotropic wave equations with the same speed in one direction

Motivated by the study of uniaxial crystal optics, we consider a coupled system of $3D$ anisotropic wave equations, in which they have the same speed only in one direction but distinct speeds in the other directions. Moreover, this system has a $1D$-type null structure along the common direction. Unlike the isotropic case, in which the celebrated Klainerman vector fields method is very successful, the main difficulty of the anisotropic case lies in the absence of enough joint commuting vector fields. After carefully analyzing the differences between group velocities of two waves, which are delicate near the same speed direction, the role of null structure, and a fine structure of the phase of oscillation in time, we prove global stability and scattering for small localized initial data.

Global stability of the Minkowski spacetime for the Einstein-Vlasov system

We prove global stability of the Minkowski spacetime in the wave coordinates system for the massive Einstein-Vlasov system. In particular, compared with previous results by Lindblad-Taylor, in which the Vlasov part is assumed to have compact support assumption, and Fajman-Joudioux-Smulevci, in which the spacetime is assumed to be exact Schwarzschild in the exterior region, we do not impose any compact support condition for the Vlasov part and allow a large class of non-isotropic perturbations for the metric part, which decay at rate $\langle r\rangle^{-1+}$ towards space infinity.

Nonlinear Landau damping for the Vlasov-Poisson system in $\R^3$: the Poisson equilibrium

We prove asymptotic stability of the Poisson homogeneous equilibrium among solutions of the Vlassov-Poisson system in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$. More precisely, we show that small, smooth, and localized perturbations of the Poisson equilibrium lead to global solutions of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which scatter to linear solutions at a polynomial rate as $t\to\infty$. The Euclidean problem we consider here differs significantly from the classical work on Landau damping in the periodic setting, in several ways. Most importantly, the linearized problem cannot satisfy a "Penrose condition". As a result, our system contains resonances (small divisors) and the electric field is a superposition of an electrostatic component and a larger oscillatory component, both with polynomially decaying rates.

Large data global solution of the 3D RVM system with cylindrical symmetry I: Iterative smoothing scheme

This is the first part of a two-paper sequence establishing the global existence of $3D$ relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system (RVM) for arbitrarily large smooth localized initial data with cylindrical symmetry. This paper employs Part II's pointwise estimates, developed independently of Part I, as fundamental tools to demonstrate the iterative smoothing scheme (ISS), which is originated and inspired by the work of Klainerman-Staffilani(2002). Using ISS and a novel singular weighted space-time estimate for the distribution function, we prove upper bounds for the projection and full velocity characteristics via a standard bootstrap argument. Using the classic momentum method, we find that the high order momentum at most grows polynomially in time. This further implies that the $L^\infty_{x}$-norm of the electromagnetic field, $\|(E(t),B(t)\|_{L^\infty_x}$, also grows at most polynomially over time. Consequently, this verifies the continuation criteria obtained by Luk-Strain (2014). As a result, the energy function of $3D$ RVM system doesn't blow up in finite time, thereby establishing global existence.

Remarks on the Large data global solutions of $3D$ RVP system and $3D$ RVM system

We show that the simplified $3D$ relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell (sRVM) system, in which there is no magnetic field, poses a global solution for a class of arbitrarily large cylindrically symmetric initial data. In particular, a vanishing order condition imposed on the initial data for the relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system (RVP) in Wang(2022) is not imposed for the sRVM system.

Global solution of the 3D relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system for a class of large data

For a class of arbitrary large initial data with radial symmetry or cylindrical symmetry, we prove the existence of global solutions for the $3D$ relativistic Vlasov-Poisson system for the plasma physics case. The compact support assumption is not imposed for both cases. The essential lower bound assumption of the angular momentum in the previous work of Glassey-Schaeffer (2001) is not imposed on the initial data for the cylindrical symmetry case.

Decay estimates for the $3D$ relativistic and non-relativistic Vlasov-Poisson systems

We study the small data global regularity problem of the $3D$ Vlasov-Poisson system for both the relativistic case and the non-relativistic case. The main goal of this paper is twofold. (i) Based on a Fourier method, which works systematically for both the relativistic case and the non-relativistic case, we give a short proof for the global regularity and the sharp decay estimate for the $3D$ Vlasov-Poisson system. Moreover, we show that the nonlinear solution scatters to a linear solution in both cases. The result of sharp decay estimates for the non-relativistic case is not new, see Hwang-Rendall-Vel\'azquez and Smulevici. (ii) The Fourier method presented in this paper serves as a good comparison for the study of more complicated $3D$ relativistic Vlasov-Nordstr\"om system and $3D$ relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system.

Propagation of regularity and long time behavior of $3D$ massive relativistic transport equation I: Vlasov-Nordstr\"om system

In this paper, we introduce a new set of vector fields for the relativistic transport equation, which is applicable for general Vlasov-Wave type coupled systems. By combining the strength of Klainerman vector field method and Fourier method, we prove global regularity and scattering for the $3D$ massive relativistic Vlasov-Nordstr\"om system for small initial data without any compact support assumption, which is widely used in the literature for the study of Vlasov solution.

Propagation of regularity and long time behavior of the $3D$ massive relativistic transport equation II: Vlasov-Maxwell system

Given any smooth, suitably small initial data, which decays polynomially at infinity, we prove global regularity for the $3D$ relativistic massive Vlasov-Maxwell system. In particular, the compact support assumption, which is widely used in the literature, is not imposed on the initial data. Our proofs are based on a combination of the Klainerman vector fields method and the Fourier method, which allows us to exploit a crucial hidden null structure in the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system.

Global solution for the $3D$ quadratic Schr\"odinger equation of $Q(u, \bar{u})$ type

We study a class of $3D$ quadratic Schr\"odinger equations as follows, $(\partial_t -i \Delta) u = Q(u, \bar{u})$. Different from nonlinearities of the $uu$ type and the $\bar{u}\bar{u}$ type, which have been studied by Germain-Masmoudi-Shatah, the interaction of $u$ and $\bar{u}$ is very strong at the low frequency part, e.g., $1\times 1 \rightarrow 0$ type interaction (the size of input frequency is "$1$" and the size of output frequency is "$0$"). It creates a growth mode for the Fourier transform of the profile of solution around a small neighborhood of zero. This growth mode will again cause the growth of profile in the medium frequency part due to the $1\times 0\rightarrow 1$ type interaction. The issue of strong $1\times 1\rightarrow 0$ type interaction makes the global existence problem very delicate. In this paper, we show that, as long as there are "$\epsilon$" derivatives inside the quadratic term $Q (u, \bar{u})$, there exists a global solution for small initial data. As a byproduct, we also give a simple proof for the almost global existence of the small data solution of $(\partial_t -i \Delta)u = |u|^2 = u\bar{u}$, which was first proved by Ginibre-Hayashi. Instead of using vector fields, we consider this problem purely in Fourier space.

Global regularity for the 3D finite depth capillary water waves

In this paper, we prove global regularity, scattering, and the non-existence of small traveling waves for the $3D$ finite depth capillary waves system for small initial data. The non-existence of small traveling waves shows a fundamental difference between the capillary waves ($\sigma=1, g=0$) and the gravity-capillary waves ($\sigma=1,$ $ 0< g< 3$) in the finite depth setting. As, for the later case, there exists arbitrary small $L^2$ traveling waves. Different from the water waves system in the infinite depth setting, the quadratic terms of the same system in the finite depth setting are worse due to the absence of null structure inside the Dirichlet-Neumann operator. In the finite depth setting, the capillary waves system has the worst quadratic terms among the water waves systems with all possible values of gravity effect constant and surface tension coefficient. It loses favorable cancellations not only in the High $\times$ Low type interaction but also in the High $\times $ High type interaction. In the worst scenario, the best decay rate of the nonlinear solution that one could expect is $ (1+t) ^ {-1/2} $, because the $3D$ finite depth capillary waves system lacks null structures and there exists $Q(u, \bar{u})$ type quadratic term, which causes a very large time resonance set and the definite growth of the associated profile. As a result, the problematic terms are not only the quadratic terms but also the cubic terms. To prove global regularity for the capillary waves system, we identify a good variable to prove the dispersion estimate, fully exploit the hidden structures inside the capillary waves system, and use a novel method to control the weighted norms.
