Tempered fractional Langevin-Brownian motion with inverse $β$-stable subordinator

Time-changed stochastic processes have attracted great attention and wide interests due to their extensive applications, especially in financial time series, biology and physics. This paper pays attention to a special stochastic process, tempered fractional Langevin motion, which is non-Markovian and undergoes ballistic diffusion for long times. The corresponding time-changed Langevin system with inverse $β$-stable subordinator is discussed in detail, including its diffusion type, moments, Klein-Kramers equation, and the correlation structure. Interestingly, this subordination could result in both subdiffusion and superdiffusion, depending on the value of $β$. The difference between the subordinated tempered fractional Langevin equation and the subordinated Langevin equation with external biasing force is studied for a deeper understanding of subordinator. The time-changed tempered fractional Brownian motion by inverse $β$-stable subordinator is also considered, as well as the correlation structure of its increments. Some properties of the statistical quantities of the time-changed process are discussed, displaying striking differences compared with the original process.

Feynman-Kac equation revisited

Functionals of particles' paths have diverse applications in physics, mathematics, hydrology, economics, and other fields. Under the framework of continuous time random walk (CTRW), the governing equations for the probability density functions (PDFs) of the functionals, including the ones of the paths of stochastic processes of normal diffusion, anomalous diffusion, and even the diffusion with reaction, have been derived. Sometimes, the stochastic processes in physics and chemistry are naturally described by Langevin equations. The Langevin picture has the advantages in studying the dynamics with an external force field and analyzing the effect of noise resulting from a fluctuating environment. We derive the governing equations of the PDFs of the functionals of paths of Langevin system with both space and time dependent force field and arbitrary multiplicative noise; and the backward version is proposed for the system with arbitrary additive noise or multiplicative Gaussian white noise together with a force field. For the newly built equations, their applications of solving the PDFs of the occupation time and area under the trajectory curve are provided, and the results are confirmed by simulations.

Nonlocal Diffusion Operators for Normal and Anomalous Dynamics

The Laplacian $Δ$ is the infinitesimal generator of isotropic Brownian motion, being the limit process of normal diffusion, while the fractional Laplacian $Δ^{β/2}$ serves as the infinitesimal generator of the limit process of isotropic Lévy process. Taking limit, in some sense, means that the operators can approximate the physical process well after sufficient long time. We introduce the nonlocal operators (being effective from the starting time), which describe the general processes undergoing normal diffusion. For anomalous diffusion, we extend to the anisotropic fractional Laplacian $Δ_m^{β/2}$ and the tempered one $Δ_m^{β/2,λ}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Their definitions are proved to be equivalent to an alternative one in Fourier space. Based on these new nonlocal diffusion operators, we further derive the deterministic governing equations of some interesting statistical observables of the very general jump processes with multiple internal states. Finally, we consider the associated initial and boundary value problems and prove their well-posedness of the Galerkin weak formulation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. To obtain the coercivity, we claim that the probability density function $m(Y)$ should be nondegenerate.

Resonant behavior of the generalized Langevin system with tempered Mittag-Leffler memory kernel

The generalized Langevin equation describes anomalous dynamics. Noise is not only the origin of uncertainty but also plays a positive role in helping to detect signal with information, termed stochastic resonance (SR). This paper analyzes the anomalous resonant behaviors of the generalized Langevin system with a multiplicative dichotomous noise and an internal tempered Mittag-Leffler noise. For the system with fluctuating harmonic potential, we obtain the exact expressions of several SR, such as, the first moment, the amplitude and the autocorrelation function for the output signal as well as the signal-noise ratio. We analyze the influence of the tempering parameter and memory exponent on the bona fide SR and the general SR. Moreover, it is detected that the critical memory exponent changes regularly with the increase of tempering parameter. Almost all the theoretical results are validated by numerical simulations.

UVC LEDs on Bulk AlN Substrates Using Silicon Nanomembranes for Efficient Hole Injection

As UV LEDs are explored at shorter wavelengths (< 280 nm) into the UVC spectral range, the crystalline quality of epitaxial AlGaN films with high Al compositions and inefficient hole injection from p-type AlGaN severely limit the LED performance and development. In this work, we report on 237 nm light emission with a record light output power of 265 uW from AlN/Al0.72Ga028N multiple quantum well UVC LEDs using bulk AlN substrates and p-type silicon nanomembrane contact layers for significantly improved AlGaN film quality and hole injection, respectively. No intensity degradation or efficiency droop was observed up to a current density of 245 A/cm2, which is attributed to the low dislocation density within AlGaN films, the large concentration of holes from p-Si, and efficient hole-transport to the active region. Additionally, the emission peak at 237 nm is dominant across the electroluminescence spectrum with no significant parasitic emissions observed. This study demonstrates the feasibility of using p-Si as a hole injector for UVC LEDs, which can be extended to even shorter wavelengths where hole injection from chemically doped AlGaN layers is not feasible.

Discontinuous Galerkin methods and their adaptivity for the tempered fractional (convection) diffusion equations

This paper focuses on the adaptive discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for the tempered fractional (convection) diffusion equations. The DG schemes with interior penalty for the diffusion term and numerical flux for the convection term are used to solve the equations, and the detailed stability and convergence analyses are provided. Based on the derived posteriori error estimates, the local error indicator is designed. The theoretical results and the effectiveness of the adaptive DG methods are respectively verified and displayed by the extensive numerical experiments. The strategy of designing adaptive schemes presented in this paper works for the general PDEs with fractional operators.

Localization and ballistic diffusion for the tempered fractional Brownian-Langevin motion

This paper further discusses the tempered fractional Brownian motion, its ergodicity, and the derivation of the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation. Then we introduce the generalized Langevin equation with the tempered fractional Gaussian noise for a free particle, called tempered fractional Langevin equation (tfLe). While the tempered fractional Brownian motion displays localization diffusion for the long time limit and for the short time its mean squared displacement has the asymptotic form $t^{2H}$, we show that the asymptotic form of the mean squared displacement of the tfLe transits from $t^2$ (ballistic diffusion for short time) to $t^{2-2H}$, and then to $t^2$ (again ballistic diffusion for long time). On the other hand, the overdamped tfLe has the transition of the diffusion type from $t^{2-2H}$ to $t^2$ (ballistic diffusion). The tfLe with harmonic potential is also considered.

Ultrasensitive and broadband MoS2 photodetector driven by ferroelectrics

Photodetectors based on two dimensional materials have attracted growing interest. However, the sensitivity is still unsatisfactory even under high gate voltage. Here we demonstrate a MoS2 photodetector with a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) ferroelectric layer in place of the oxide layer in a traditional field effect transistor. The dark current of the photodetector is strongly suppressed by ferroelectric polarization. A high detectivity 2.21012 Jones) and photoresponsitivity (2570 A W) detector has been achieved under ZERO gate bias at a wavelength of 635 nm. Most strikingly, the band gap of few-layer MoS2 can be tuned by the ultra-high electrostatic field from the ferroelectric polarization. With this characteristic, photoresponse wavelengths of the photodetector are extended into the near infrared (0.85-1.55m). A ferroelectrics optoelectronics hybrid structure is an effective way to achieve high performance 2D electronic optoelectronic devices.

Cross-Layer Scheduling in Multi-user System with Delay and Secrecy Constraints

Recently, physical layer security based approaches have drawn considerable attentions and are envisaged to provide secure communications in the wireless networks. However, most existing literatures only focus on the physical layer. Thus, how to design an effective transmission scheme which also considers the requirements from the upper layers is still an unsolved problem. We consider such cross-layer resource allocation problem in the multi-user downlink environment for both having instantaneous and partial eavesdropping channel information scenarios. The problem is first formulated in a new security framework. Then, the control scheme is designed to maximize the average admission rate of the data, incorporating delay, power, and secrecy as constraints, for both non-colluding and colluding eavesdropping cases in each scenario. Performance analysis is given based on the stochastic optimization theory and the simulations are carried out to validate the effectiveness of our scheme.

Information-Theoretic Study on Routing Path Selection in Two-Way Relay Networks

Two-way relaying is a promising technique to improve network throughput. However, how to apply it to a wireless network remains an unresolved issue. Particularly, challenges lie in the joint design between the physical layer and the routing protocol. Applying an existing routing protocol to a two-way relay network can easily compromise the advantages of two-way relaying. Considering routing path selection and two-way relaying together can be formulated as a network optimization problem, but it is usually NP-hard. In this paper, we take a different approach to study routing path selection for two-way relay networks. Instead of solving the joint optimization problem, we study the fundamental characteristics of a routing path consisting of multihop two-way relaying nodes. Information theoretical analysis is carried out to derive bandwidth efficiency and energy efficiency of a routing path in a two-way relay network. Such analysis provides a framework of routing path selection by considering bandwidth efficiency, energy efficiency and latency subject to physical layer constraints such as the transmission rate, transmission power, path loss exponent, path length, and the number of relays. This framework provides insightful guidelines on routing protocol design of a two-way relay network. Our analytical framework and insights are illustrated by extensive numerical results.

A++ Random Access for Two-way Relaying in Wireless Networks

Two-way relaying can significantly improve performance of next generation wireless networks. However, due to its dependence on multi-node cooperation and transmission coordination, applying this technique to a wireless network in an effective and scalable manner poses a challenging problem. To tackle this problem without relying on complicated scheduling or network optimization algorithms, we propose a scalable random access scheme that takes measures in both the physical layer and the medium access control layer. Specifically, we propose a two-way relaying technique that supports fully asynchronous transmission and is modulation-independent. It also assumes no priori knowledge of channel conditions. On the top of this new physical layer technique, a random access MAC protocol is designed to dynamically form two-way relaying cooperation in a wireless network. To evaluate the scalable random access scheme, both theoretical analysis and simulations are carried out. Performance results illustrate that our scheme has achieved the goal of scalable two-way relaying in a wireless network and significantly outperforms CSMA/CA protocol.
