STaDA: Style Transfer as Data Augmentation

The success of training deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) heavily depends on a significant amount of labelled data. Recent research has found that neural style transfer algorithms can apply the artistic style of one image to another image without changing the latter's high-level semantic content, which makes it feasible to employ neural style transfer as a data augmentation method to add more variation to the training dataset. The contribution of this paper is a thorough evaluation of the effectiveness of the neural style transfer as a data augmentation method for image classification tasks. We explore the state-of-the-art neural style transfer algorithms and apply them as a data augmentation method on Caltech 101 and Caltech 256 dataset, where we found around 2% improvement from 83% to 85% of the image classification accuracy with VGG16, compared with traditional data augmentation strategies. We also combine this new method with conventional data augmentation approaches to further improve the performance of image classification. This work shows the potential of neural style transfer in computer vision field, such as helping us to reduce the difficulty of collecting sufficient labelled data and improve the performance of generic image-based deep learning algorithms.

Observation of Complete Photonic Bandgap in Low Refractive Index Contrast Inverse Rod-Connected Diamond Structured Chalcogenides

Three-dimensional complete photonic bandgap materials or photonic crystals block light propagation in all directions. The rod-connected diamond structure exhibits the largest photonic bandgap known to date and supports a complete bandgap for the lowest refractive index contrast ratio down to $n_{high}/n_{low} \sim 1.9$. We confirm this threshold by measuring a complete photonic bandgap in the infrared region in Sn--S--O $(n\sim1.9)$ and Ge--Sb--S--O $(n\sim2)$ inverse rod-connected diamond structures. The structures were fabricated using a low-temperature chemical vapor deposition process via a single-inversion technique. This provides a reliable fabrication technique of complete photonic bandgap materials and expands the library of backfilling materials, leading to a wide range of future photonic applications.

Beyond Keywords and Relevance: A Personalized Ad Retrieval Framework in E-Commerce Sponsored Search

On most sponsored search platforms, advertisers bid on some keywords for their advertisements (ads). Given a search request, ad retrieval module rewrites the query into bidding keywords, and uses these keywords as keys to select Top N ads through inverted indexes. In this way, an ad will not be retrieved even if queries are related when the advertiser does not bid on corresponding keywords. Moreover, most ad retrieval approaches regard rewriting and ad-selecting as two separated tasks, and focus on boosting relevance between search queries and ads. Recently, in e-commerce sponsored search more and more personalized information has been introduced, such as user profiles, long-time and real-time clicks. Personalized information makes ad retrieval able to employ more elements (e.g. real-time clicks) as search signals and retrieval keys, however it makes ad retrieval more difficult to measure ads retrieved through different signals. To address these problems, we propose a novel ad retrieval framework beyond keywords and relevance in e-commerce sponsored search. Firstly, we employ historical ad click data to initialize a hierarchical network representing signals, keys and ads, in which personalized information is introduced. Then we train a model on top of the hierarchical network by learning the weights of edges. Finally we select the best edges according to the model, boosting RPM/CTR. Experimental results on our e-commerce platform demonstrate that our ad retrieval framework achieves good performance.

Direct Wide-angle Measurement of Photonic Band- structure in a Three-dimensional Photonic Crystal using Infrared Fourier Imaging Spectroscopy

We propose a method to directly visualize the photonic band-structure of micron size photonic crystals using wide angle spectroscopy. By extending Fourier Imaging Spectroscopy sensitivity into the infrared range we have obtained accurate measurements of the band-structures along the high-symmetry directions (X-W-K-L-U) of polymeric three-dimensional rod-connected diamond photonic crystals. Our implementation also allows us to record single-wavelength reflectance far field patterns showing a very good agreement with simulations of the same designs. This technique is suitable for the characterization of photonic structures working in the infrared and in particular, to obtain band-structure information of complete photonic band gap materials.

Technique Report: Scheduling Flows with Multiple Service Frequency Constraints

With the fast development of wireless technologies, wireless applications have invaded various areas in people's lives with a wide range of capabilities. Guaranteeing Quality-of-Service (QoS) is the key to the success of those applications. One of the QoS requirements, service frequency, is very important for tasks including multimedia transmission in the Internet of Things. A service frequency constraint denotes the length of time period during which a link can transmit at least once. Unfortunately, it has not been well addressed yet. Therefore, this paper proposes a new framework to schedule multi transmitting flows in wireless networks considering service frequency constraint for each link. In our model, the constraints for flows are heterogeneous due to the diversity of users' behaviors. We first introduce a new definition for network stability with service frequency constraints and demonstrate that the novel scheduling policy is throughput-optimal in one fundamental category of network models. After that, we discuss the performance of a wireless network with service frequency constraints from the views of capacity region and total queue length. Finally, a series of evaluations indicate the proposed scheduling policy can guarantee service frequency and achieve a good performance on the aspect of queue length of each flow.

Evidence of near-infrared partial photonic bandgap in polymeric rod-connected diamond structures

We present the simulation, fabrication, and optical characterization of low-index polymeric rod-connected diamond (RCD) structures. Such complex three-dimensional photonic crystal structures are created via direct laser writing by two-photon polymerization. To our knowledge, this is the first measurement at near-infrared wavelengths, showing partial photonic bandgaps for this structure. We characterize structures in transmission and reflection using angular resolved Fourier image spectroscopy to visualize the band structure. Comparison of the numerical simulations of such structures with the experimentally measured data show good agreement for both P- and S-polarizations.

Non-Gaussian statistics for the motion of self-propelled Janus particles: experiment versus theory

Spherical Janus particles are one of the most prominent examples for active Brownian objects. Here, we study the diffusiophoretic motion of such microswimmers in experiment and in theory. Three stages are found: simple Brownian motion at short times, super-diffusion at intermediate times, and finally diffusive behavior again at long times. These three regimes observed in the experiments are compared with a theoretical model for the Langevin dynamics of self-propelled particles with coupled translational and rotational motion. Besides the mean square displacement also higher displacement moments are addressed. In particular, theoretical predictions regarding the non-Gaussian behavior of self-propelled particles are verified in the experiments. Furthermore, the full displacement probability distribution is analyzed, where in agreement with Brownian dynamics simulations either an extremely broadened peak or a pronounced double-peak structure is found depending on the experimental conditions.
