Layer-dependent superconductivity in iron-based superconductors

The Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem states that a two-dimensional system cannot spontaneously break a continuous symmetry at finite temperature. This is supported by the observation of layer-dependent superconductivity in the quasi-two-dimensional superconductor NbSe2, in which the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is reduced by about 60% in the monolayer limit. However, for the extremely anisotropic copper-based high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212), the Tc of the monolayer is almost identical to that of its bulk counterpart. To clarify the effect of dimensionality on superconductivity, here we successfully fabricate ultrathin flakes of CsCa2Fe4As4F2, a highly anisotropic iron-based high-Tc superconductor, down to monolayer. The monolayer flake exhibits the highest Tc of 24 K (after tuning to the optimal doping by ionic liquid gating), which is about 20% lower than that of the bulk crystal. We also fabricate ultrathin flakes of CaKFe4As4, another iron-based superconductor with much smaller anisotropy. The Tc of the 3-layer flake decreases by 46%, showing a more pronounced dimensional effect than that of CsCa2Fe4As4F2. By carefully examining their anisotropy and the c-axis coherence length, we reveal the general trend and empirical law of the layer-dependent superconductivity in these quasi-two-dimensional superconductors. From this, the Tc of a new monolayer superconductor can be extrapolated.

MulMarker: a comprehensive framework for identifying multi-gene prognostic signatures

Prognostic signatures play an important role in clinical research, offering insights into the potential health outcomes of patients and guiding therapeutic decisions. Although single-gene prognostic biomarkers are valuable, multi-gene prognostic signatures offer deeper insights into disease progression. In this paper, we propose MulMarker, a comprehensive framework for identifying multi-gene prognostic signatures across various diseases. MulMarker comprises three core modules: a chatbot for addressing user queries, a module for identifying multi-gene prognostic signatures, and a module for generating tailored reports. Employing MulMarker, we identified a cell cycle-related prognostic signature that consists of CCNA1/2, CCNB1/2/3, CCNC, CCND1/2/3, CCNE1/2, CCNF, CCNG1/2, and CCNH. Based on the prognostic signature, we successfully stratified patients into high-risk and low-risk groups. Notably, our analysis revealed that patients in the low-risk group demonstrated a significantly higher survival rate compared to those in the high-risk group. Overall, MulMarker represents an efficient approach for the identification of multi-gene prognostic signatures. We release the code of MulMarker at https://github.com/Tina9/MulMarker.

VidPlat: A Tool for Fast Crowdsourcing of Quality-of-Experience Measurements

For video or web services, it is crucial to measure user-perceived quality of experience (QoE) at scale under various video quality or page loading delays. However, fast QoE measurements remain challenging as they must elicit subjective assessment from human users. Previous work either (1) automates QoE measurements by letting crowdsourcing raters watch and rate QoE test videos or (2) dynamically prunes redundant QoE tests based on previously collected QoE measurements. Unfortunately, it is hard to combine both ideas because traditional crowdsourcing requires QoE test videos to be pre-determined before a crowdsourcing campaign begins. Thus, if researchers want to dynamically prune redundant test videos based on other test videos' QoE, they are forced to launch multiple crowdsourcing campaigns, causing extra overheads to re-calibrate or train raters every time. This paper presents VidPlat, the first open-source tool for fast and automated QoE measurements, by allowing dynamic pruning of QoE test videos within a single crowdsourcing task. VidPlat creates an indirect shim layer between researchers and the crowdsourcing platforms. It allows researchers to define a logic that dynamically determines which new test videos need more QoE ratings based on the latest QoE measurements, and it then redirects crowdsourcing raters to watch QoE test videos dynamically selected by this logic. Other than having fewer crowdsourcing campaigns, VidPlat also reduces the total number of QoE ratings by dynamically deciding when enough ratings are gathered for each test video. It is an open-source platform that future researchers can reuse and customize. We have used VidPlat in three projects (web loading, on-demand video, and online gaming). We show that VidPlat can reduce crowdsourcing cost by 31.8% - 46.0% and latency by 50.9% - 68.8%.

Holistic Evaluation of GPT-4V for Biomedical Imaging

In this paper, we present a large-scale evaluation probing GPT-4V's capabilities and limitations for biomedical image analysis. GPT-4V represents a breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI) for computer vision, with applications in the biomedical domain. We assess GPT-4V's performance across 16 medical imaging categories, including radiology, oncology, ophthalmology, pathology, and more. Tasks include modality recognition, anatomy localization, disease diagnosis, report generation, and lesion detection. The extensive experiments provide insights into GPT-4V's strengths and weaknesses. Results show GPT-4V's proficiency in modality and anatomy recognition but difficulty with disease diagnosis and localization. GPT-4V excels at diagnostic report generation, indicating strong image captioning skills. While promising for biomedical imaging AI, GPT-4V requires further enhancement and validation before clinical deployment. We emphasize responsible development and testing for trustworthy integration of biomedical AGI. This rigorous evaluation of GPT-4V on diverse medical images advances understanding of multimodal large language models (LLMs) and guides future work toward impactful healthcare applications.

Brochosome-inspired binary metastructures for pixel-by-pixel thermal signature control

In nature, nano/micro-structured materials are adopted by various species to generate colors or achieve camouflage. Here, inspired by leafhopper-generated brochosomes, we design binary metastructures composed of pixel twins to achieve pixelated thermal signature control at the microscale. In the infrared range, the pixel twins exhibit distinct emissivities, creating thermal counterparts of '0-1' binary states for storing and displaying information. In the visible range, the engineered surface morphology of the pixel twins enables similar scattering behaviors, rendering the pixel twins visually indistinguishable, which achieves the camouflage of stored information. Compared to the previous work based on plasmonic holographic metasurfaces, the brochosome-like pixel twins are thermally driven, and their structure-enabled functions do not rely on permittivities of any specific material. The unique combination of visible camouflage and infrared display provides a systemic solution to the spatial control of thermal signatures, and has important implications for optical security, anticounterfeiting, and data encryption.

An Empirical Study of Instruction-tuning Large Language Models in Chinese

The success of ChatGPT validates the potential of large language models (LLMs) in artificial general intelligence (AGI). Subsequently, the release of LLMs has sparked the open-source community's interest in instruction-tuning, which is deemed to accelerate ChatGPT's replication process. However, research on instruction-tuning LLMs in Chinese, the world's most spoken language, is still in its early stages. Therefore, this paper makes an in-depth empirical study of instruction-tuning LLMs in Chinese, which can serve as a cookbook that provides valuable findings for effectively customizing LLMs that can better respond to Chinese instructions. Specifically, we systematically explore the impact of LLM bases, parameter-efficient methods, instruction data types, which are the three most important elements for instruction-tuning. Besides, we also conduct experiment to study the impact of other factors, e.g., chain-of-thought data and human-value alignment. We hope that this empirical study can make a modest contribution to the open Chinese version of ChatGPT. This paper will release a powerful Chinese LLMs that is comparable to ChatGLM. Multigap nodeless superconductivity in the topological semimetal PdTe

Recently PdTe was identified as a spin-orbit coupled topological Dirac semimetal and was claimed to exhibit both bulk-nodal and surface-nodeless superconducting gaps. Here we report the ultralow-temperature thermal conductivity measurements on PdTe single crystals with $T_c$ = 4.5 K to investigate its superconducting gap structure. It is found that the residual linear term $κ_0/T$ is negligible in zero magnetic field. Furthermore, the field dependence of $κ_0(H)/T$ exhibits an $\sf S$-shaped curve. These results suggest that PdTe has multiple nodeless superconducting gaps, which is at odds with the claimed bulk-nodal gap. The reason for the discrepancy is likely that previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements were only performed down to 2 K and cannot observe the smaller nodeless gap. The fully gapped superconducting state in PdTe is compatible with it being a topological superconductor candidate.

The solvability and a Stackelberg-Nash game problem for degenerate elliptic equations

This study aims to investigate the functional properties of weak solution spaces and their compact embedding properties in relation to the Dirichlet problem associated with a specific class of degenerate elliptic equations. To expand the scope of analysis for degenerate elliptic problems, we employ weighted Sobolev inequalities and compact embedding techniques within the framework of weighted Sobolev spaces. Additionally, we apply these findings to examine a Stackelberg-Nash game problem and obtain the existence of the Stackelberg-Nash equilibrium.

Experimental evidence for Berry curvature multipoles in antiferromagnets

Berry curvature multipoles appearing in topological quantum materials have recently attracted much attention. Their presence can manifest in novel phenomena, such as nonlinear anomalous Hall effects (NLAHE). The notion of Berry curvature multipoles extends our understanding of Berry curvature effects on the material properties. Hence, research on this subject is of fundamental importance and may also enable future applications in energy harvesting and high-frequency technology. It was shown that a Berry curvature dipole can give rise to a 2nd order NLAHE in materials of low crystalline symmetry. Here, we demonstrate a fundamentally new mechanism for Berry curvature multipoles in antiferromagnets that are supported by the underlying magnetic symmetries. Carrying out electric transport measurements on the kagome antiferromagnet FeSn, we observe a 3rd order NLAHE, which appears as a transverse voltage response at the 3rd harmonic frequency when a longitudinal a.c. current drive is applied. Interestingly, this NLAHE is strongest at and above room temperature. We combine these measurements with a scaling law analysis, a symmetry analysis, model calculations, first-principle calculations, and magnetic Monte-Carlo simulations to show that the observed NLAHE is induced by a Berry curvature quadrupole appearing in the spin-canted state of FeSn. At a practical level, our study establishes NLAHE as a sensitive probe of antiferromagnetic phase transitions in other materials, such as moiré superlattices, two-dimensional van der Waal magnets, and quantum spin liquid candidates, that remain poorly understood to date. More broadly, Berry curvature multipole effects are predicted to exist for 90 magnetic point groups. Hence, our work opens a new research area to study a variety of topological magnetic materials through nonlinear measurement protocols.

Improved NL2SQL based on Multi-layer Expert Network

The Natural Language to SQL (NL2SQL) technique is used to convert natural language queries into executable SQL statements. Typically, slot-filling is employed as a classification method for multi-task cases to achieve this goal. However, slot-filling can result in inaccurate SQL statement generation due to negative migration issues arising from different classification tasks. To overcome this limitation, this study introduces a new approach called Multi-Layer Expert Generate SQL (MLEG-SQL), which utilizes a dedicated multi-task hierarchical network. The lower layer of the network extracts semantic features of natural language statements, while the upper layer builds a specialized expert system for handling specific classification tasks. This hierarchical approach mitigates performance degradation resulting from different task conflicts. The proposed method was evaluated on the WiKSQL dataset and was found to be effective in generating accurate SQL statements.

Multiagent Reinforcement Learning with an Attention Mechanism for Improving Energy Efficiency in LoRa Networks

Long Range (LoRa) wireless technology, characterized by low power consumption and a long communication range, is regarded as one of the enabling technologies for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). However, as the network scale increases, the energy efficiency (EE) of LoRa networks decreases sharply due to severe packet collisions. To address this issue, it is essential to appropriately assign transmission parameters such as the spreading factor and transmission power for each end device (ED). However, due to the sporadic traffic and low duty cycle of LoRa networks, evaluating the system EE performance under different parameter settings is time-consuming. Therefore, we first formulate an analytical model to calculate the system EE. On this basis, we propose a transmission parameter allocation algorithm based on multiagent reinforcement learning (MALoRa) with the aim of maximizing the system EE of LoRa networks. Notably, MALoRa employs an attention mechanism to guide each ED to better learn how much ''attention'' should be given to the parameter assignments for relevant EDs when seeking to improve the system EE. Simulation results demonstrate that MALoRa significantly improves the system EE compared with baseline algorithms with an acceptable degradation in packet delivery rate (PDR).

Neutron Scattering off One-Neutron Halo Nuclei in Halo Effective Field Theory

Neutron scattering off neutron halos can provide important information about the internal structure of nuclei close to the neutron drip line. In this work, we use halo effective field theory to study the $s$-wave scattering of a neutron and the spin-parity $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^+$ one-neutron halo nuclei $^{11}\rm Be$, $^{15}\rm C$, and $^{19}\rm C$ at leading order. In the $J=1$ channel, the only inputs to the Faddeev equations are their one-neutron separation energies. In the $J=0$ channel, the neutron-neutron scattering length and the two-neutron separation energies of $\rm ^{12}Be$, $\rm ^{16}C$ and $\rm ^{20}C$ enter as well. The numerical results show that the total $s$-wave cross sections in the $J=1$ channel at threshold are of the order of a few barns. In the $J=0$ channel, these cross sections are of the order of a few barns for $n$-$^{11}\rm Be$ and $n$-$^{19}\rm C$ scattering, and about 60 $\rm mb$ for the $n$-$^{15}\rm C$ scattering. The appearance of a pole in $p\cotδ$ close to zero in all three cases indicates the existence of a virtual Efimov state close to threshold in each of the $^{12}\rm Be$, $^{16}\rm C$, and $^{20}\rm C$ systems. Observation of this pole would confirm the presence of Efimov physics in halo nuclei. The dependence of the results on the neutron-core scattering length is also studied.

FashionNTM: Multi-turn Fashion Image Retrieval via Cascaded Memory

Multi-turn textual feedback-based fashion image retrieval focuses on a real-world setting, where users can iteratively provide information to refine retrieval results until they find an item that fits all their requirements. In this work, we present a novel memory-based method, called FashionNTM, for such a multi-turn system. Our framework incorporates a new Cascaded Memory Neural Turing Machine (CM-NTM) approach for implicit state management, thereby learning to integrate information across all past turns to retrieve new images, for a given turn. Unlike vanilla Neural Turing Machine (NTM), our CM-NTM operates on multiple inputs, which interact with their respective memories via individual read and write heads, to learn complex relationships. Extensive evaluation results show that our proposed method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art algorithm by 50.5%, on Multi-turn FashionIQ -- the only existing multi-turn fashion dataset currently, in addition to having a relative improvement of 12.6% on Multi-turn Shoes -- an extension of the single-turn Shoes dataset that we created in this work. Further analysis of the model in a real-world interactive setting demonstrates two important capabilities of our model -- memory retention across turns, and agnosticity to turn order for non-contradictory feedback. Finally, user study results show that images retrieved by FashionNTM were favored by 83.1% over other multi-turn models. Project page: https://sites.google.com/eng.ucsd.edu/fashionntm

Intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect and gate-switchable Berry curvature sliding in twisted bilayer graphene

Though the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and nonlocal transport response reveals nontrivial band topology governed by the Berry curvature in twisted bilayer graphene, some recent works reported nonlinear Hall signals in graphene superlattices that are caused by the extrinsic disorder scattering rather than the intrinsic Berry curvature dipole moment. In this work, we report a Berry curvature dipole induced intrinsic nonlinear Hall effect in high-quality twisted bilayer graphene devices. We also find that the application of the displacement field substantially changes the direction and amplitude of the nonlinear Hall voltages, as a result of a field-induced sliding of the Berry curvature hotspots. Our work not only proves that the Berry curvature dipole could play a dominant role in generating the intrinsic nonlinear Hall signal in graphene superlattices with low disorder densities, but also demonstrates twisted bilayer graphene to be a sensitive and fine-tunable platform for second harmonic generation and rectification.

We establish existence results for weak solutions, Sobolev embedding theorem and spectral theory of sub-elliptic operators. We provide the existence and characterization theorems for extremizing potentials $V(x)$ when $V(x)$ is subject to $L^\infty$ norm constraint.

Normalized clustering peak solutions for Schrödinger equations with general nonlinearities

We are concerned with the normalized $\ell$-peak solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ -\varepsilon^2Δv+V(x)v=f(v)+λv,\quad \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}v^2 =α\varepsilon^N. \] Here $λ\in \mathbb{R}$ will arise as a Lagrange multiplier, $V$ has a local maximum point, and $f$ is a general $L^2$-subcritical nonlinearity satisfying a nonlipschitzian property that $\lim_{s\to0} f(s)/s=-\infty$. The peaks of solutions that we construct cluster near a local maximum of $V$ as $\varepsilon\to0$. Since there is no information about the uniqueness or nondegeneracy for the limiting system, a delicate lower gradient estimate should be established when the local centers of mass of functions are away from the local maximum of $V$. We introduce a new method to obtain this estimate, which is significantly different from the ideas in del Pino and Felmer (Math. Ann. 2002), where a special gradient flow with high regularity is used, and in Byeon and Tanaka (J. Eur. Math. Soc. 2013 \& Mem. Amer. Math. Soc. 2014), where an extra translation flow is introduced. We also give the existence of ground state solutions for the autonomous problem, i.e., the case $V\equiv0$. The ground state energy is not always negative and the strict subadditive property of ground state energy here is achieved by strict concavity.

Feature Representation Learning for NL2SQL Generation Based on Coupling and Decoupling

The NL2SQL task involves parsing natural language statements into SQL queries. While most state-of-the-art methods treat NL2SQL as a slot-filling task and use feature representation learning techniques, they overlook explicit correlation features between the SELECT and WHERE clauses and implicit correlation features between sub-tasks within a single clause. To address this issue, we propose the Clause Feature Correlation Decoupling and Coupling (CFCDC) model, which uses a feature representation decoupling method to separate the SELECT and WHERE clauses at the parameter level. Next, we introduce a multi-task learning architecture to decouple implicit correlation feature representation between different SQL tasks in a specific clause. Moreover, we present an improved feature representation coupling module to integrate the decoupled tasks in the SELECT and WHERE clauses and predict the final SQL query. Our proposed CFCDC model demonstrates excellent performance on the WikiSQL dataset, with significant improvements in logic precision and execution accuracy. The source code for the model will be publicly available on GitHub
