Curvature induced polarization and spectral index behavior for PKS 1502+106

A comprehensive study of multifrequency correlations can shed light on the nature of variation for blazars. In this work, we collect the long-term radio, optical and $γ$-ray light curves of PKS 1502+106. After performing the localized cross-correlation function analysis, we find that correlations between radio and $γ$-ray or $V$ band are beyond the $3σ$ significance level. The lag of the $γ$-ray relative to 15 GHz is $-60^{+5}_{-10}$ days, translating to a distance $3.18^{+0.50}_{-0.27}$ parsec (pc) between them. Within uncertainties, the locations of the $γ$-ray and optical emitting regions are roughly the same, and are away from the jet base within $1.2$ pc. The derived magnetic field in optical and $γ$-ray emitting regions is about $0.36$ G. The logarithm of $γ$-ray flux is significantly linearly correlated with that of $V$ band fluxes, which can be explained by the synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process, the external Compton (EC) processes, or the combination of them. We find a significant linear correlation in the plot of $\log\prod$ (polarization degree) versus $\log νF_ν$ at $V$ band, and use the empirical relation $Π\sim \sin^n θ'$ ($θ'$ is the observing angle in the comoving frame blob) to explain it. The behaviors of color index (generally redder when brighter at the active state) and $γ$-ray spectral index (softer when brighter) could be well explained by the twisted jet model. These findings suggest that the curvature effect (mainly due to the change of the viewing angle) is dominant in the variation phenomena of fluxes, spectral indices, and polarization degrees for PKS 1502+106.

An Optimal Stable Selective Model Inversion for Nonminimum-phase Systems

Stably inverting a dynamic system model is the foundation of numerous servo designs. Existing inversion techniques have provided accurate model approximations that are often highly effective in feedforward controls. However, when the inverse is implemented in a feedback system, additional considerations are needed for assuring causality, closed-loop stability, and robustness. In pursuit of bridging the gap between the best model matching and a robust feedback performance under closed-loop constraints, this paper provides a modern review of frequency-domain model inversion techniques and a new treatment of unstable zeros. We provide first a pole-zero-map-based intuitive inverse tuning for motion control systems. Then for general nonminimum-phase and unstable systems, we propose an optimal inversion algorithm that can attain model accuracy at the frequency regions of interest and meanwhile constrain noise amplification elsewhere to guarantee system robustness. The design goals are achieved by a multi-objective H infinity formulation and all-pass factorization that consider model matching, causality of transfer functions, frequency-domain gain constraints, and factorization of unstable system modes in a unified scheme. The proposed algorithm is validated on motion control systems and complex high-order systems.

Prospect Theoretic Analysis of Privacy-Preserving Mechanism

We study a problem of privacy-preserving mechanism design. A data collector wants to obtain data from individuals to perform some computations. To relieve the privacy threat to the contributors, the data collector adopts a privacy-preserving mechanism by adding random noise to the computation result, at the cost of reduced accuracy. Individuals decide whether to contribute data when faced with the privacy issue. Due to the intrinsic uncertainty in privacy protection, we model individuals' privacy-related decision using Prospect Theory. Such a theory more accurately models individuals' behavior under uncertainty than the traditional expected utility theory, whose prediction always deviates from practical human behavior. We show that the data collector's utility maximization problem involves a polynomial of high and fractional order, the root of which is difficult to compute analytically. We get around this issue by considering a large population approximation, and obtain a closed-form solution that well approximates the precise solution. We discover that the data collector who considers the more realistic Prospect Theory based individual decision modeling would adopt a more conservative privacy-preserving mechanism, compared with the case based on the expected utility theory modeling. We also study the impact of Prospect Theory parameters, and concludes that more loss-averse or risk-seeking individuals will trigger a more conservative mechanism. When individuals have different Prospect Theory parameters, simulations demonstrate that the privacy protection first becomes stronger and then becomes weaker as the heterogeneity increases from a low value to a high one.

Joint Quantile Regression for Spatial Data

Linear quantile regression is a powerful tool to investigate how predictors may affect a response heterogeneously across different quantile levels. Unfortunately, existing approaches find it extremely difficult to adjust for any dependency between observation units, largely because such methods are not based upon a fully generative model of the data. For analyzing spatially indexed data, we address this difficulty by generalizing the joint quantile regression model of Yang and Tokdar (2017) and characterizing spatial dependence via a Gaussian or $t$ copula process on the underlying quantile levels of the observation units. A Bayesian semiparametric approach is introduced to perform inference of model parameters and carry out spatial quantile smoothing. An effective model comparison criteria is provided, particularly for selecting between different model specifications of tail heaviness and tail dependence. Extensive simulation studies and an application to particulate matter concentration in northeast US are presented to illustrate substantial gains in inference quality, accuracy and uncertainty quantification over existing alternatives.

Cascading: Association Augmented Sequential Recommendation

Recently, recommendation according to sequential user behaviors has shown promising results in many application scenarios. Generally speaking, real-world sequential user behaviors usually reflect a hybrid of sequential influences and association relationships. However, most existing sequential recommendation methods mainly concentrate on sequential relationships while ignoring association relationships. In this paper, we propose a unified method that incorporates item association and sequential relationships for sequential recommendation. Specifically, we encode the item association as relations in item co-occurrence graph and mine it through graph embedding by GCNs. In the meanwhile, we model the sequential relationships through a widely used RNNs based sequential recommendation method named GRU4Rec. The two parts are connected into an end-to-end network with cascading style, which guarantees that representations for item associations and sequential relationships are learned simultaneously and make the learning process maintain low complexity. We perform extensive experiments on three widely used real-world datasets: TaoBao, Amazon Instant Video and Amazon Cell Phone and Accessories. Comprehensive results have shown that the proposed method outperforms several state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis is also provided to encourage a better understanding about association relationships in sequential recommendation and illustrate the performance gain is exactly from item association.

Symbiotic Graph Neural Networks for 3D Skeleton-based Human Action Recognition and Motion Prediction

3D skeleton-based action recognition and motion prediction are two essential problems of human activity understanding. In many previous works: 1) they studied two tasks separately, neglecting internal correlations; 2) they did not capture sufficient relations inside the body. To address these issues, we propose a symbiotic model to handle two tasks jointly; and we propose two scales of graphs to explicitly capture relations among body-joints and body-parts. Together, we propose symbiotic graph neural networks, which contain a backbone, an action-recognition head, and a motion-prediction head. Two heads are trained jointly and enhance each other. For the backbone, we propose multi-branch multi-scale graph convolution networks to extract spatial and temporal features. The multi-scale graph convolution networks are based on joint-scale and part-scale graphs. The joint-scale graphs contain actional graphs, capturing action-based relations, and structural graphs, capturing physical constraints. The part-scale graphs integrate body-joints to form specific parts, representing high-level relations. Moreover, dual bone-based graphs and networks are proposed to learn complementary features. We conduct extensive experiments for skeleton-based action recognition and motion prediction with four datasets, NTU-RGB+D, Kinetics, Human3.6M, and CMU Mocap. Experiments show that our symbiotic graph neural networks achieve better performances on both tasks compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Edge AI: On-Demand Accelerating Deep Neural Network Inference via Edge Computing

As a key technology of enabling Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications in 5G era, Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have quickly attracted widespread attention. However, it is challenging to run computation-intensive DNN-based tasks on mobile devices due to the limited computation resources. What's worse, traditional cloud-assisted DNN inference is heavily hindered by the significant wide-area network latency, leading to poor real-time performance as well as low quality of user experience. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose Edgent, a framework that leverages edge computing for DNN collaborative inference through device-edge synergy. Edgent exploits two design knobs: (1) DNN partitioning that adaptively partitions computation between device and edge for purpose of coordinating the powerful cloud resource and the proximal edge resource for real-time DNN inference; (2) DNN right-sizing that further reduces computing latency via early exiting inference at an appropriate intermediate DNN layer. In addition, considering the potential network fluctuation in real-world deployment, Edgentis properly design to specialize for both static and dynamic network environment. Specifically, in a static environment where the bandwidth changes slowly, Edgent derives the best configurations with the assist of regression-based prediction models, while in a dynamic environment where the bandwidth varies dramatically, Edgent generates the best execution plan through the online change point detection algorithm that maps the current bandwidth state to the optimal configuration. We implement Edgent prototype based on the Raspberry Pi and the desktop PC and the extensive experimental evaluations demonstrate Edgent's effectiveness in enabling on-demand low-latency edge intelligence.

Monocular Neural Image Based Rendering with Continuous View Control

We present an approach that learns to synthesize high-quality, novel views of 3D objects or scenes, while providing fine-grained and precise control over the 6-DOF viewpoint. The approach is self-supervised and only requires 2D images and associated view transforms for training. Our main contribution is a network architecture that leverages a transforming auto-encoder in combination with a depth-guided warping procedure to predict geometrically accurate unseen views. Leveraging geometric constraints renders direct supervision via depth or flow maps unnecessary. If large parts of the object are occluded in the source view, a purely learning based prior is used to predict the values for dis-occluded pixels. Our network furthermore predicts a per-pixel mask, used to fuse depth-guided and pixel-based predictions. The resulting images reflect the desired 6-DOF transformation and details are preserved. We thoroughly evaluate our architecture on synthetic and real scenes and under fine-grained and fixed-view settings. Finally, we demonstrate that the approach generalizes to entirely unseen images such as product images downloaded from the internet.

Statistical analysis of micro-variability properties of the blazar S5 0716+714

The typical blazar S5 0716$+$714 is very interesting due to its rapid and large amplitude variability and high duty cycle of micro-variability in optical band. We analyze the observations in I, R and V bands obtained with the $1.0m$ telescope at Weihai observatory of Shandong University from 2011 to 2018. The model of synchrotron radiation from turbulent cells in a jet has been proposed as a mechanism for explaining micro-variability seen in blazar light curves. Parameters such as the sizes of turbulent cells, the enhanced particle densities, and the location of the turbulent cells in the jet can be studied using this model. The model predicts a time lag between variations as observed in different frequency bands. Automatic model fitting method for micro-variability is developed, and the fitting results of our multi-frequency micro-variability observations support the model. The results show that both the amplitude and duration of flares decomposed from the micro-variability light curves confirm to the log-normal distribution. The turbulent cell size is within the range of about 5 to 55 AU, and the time lags of the micro-variability flares between the I-R and R-V bands should be several minutes. The time lags obtained from the turbulence model are consistent with the fitting statistical results, and the time lags of flares are correlated with the time lags of the whole light curve.

Node Attribute Generation on Graphs

Graph structured data provide two-fold information: graph structures and node attributes. Numerous graph-based algorithms rely on both information to achieve success in supervised tasks, such as node classification and link prediction. However, node attributes could be missing or incomplete, which significantly deteriorates the performance. The task of node attribute generation aims to generate attributes for those nodes whose attributes are completely unobserved. This task benefits many real-world problems like profiling, node classification and graph data augmentation. To tackle this task, we propose a deep adversarial learning based method to generate node attributes; called node attribute neural generator (NANG). NANG learns a unifying latent representation which is shared by both node attributes and graph structures and can be translated to different modalities. We thus use this latent representation as a bridge to convert information from one modality to another. We further introduce practical applications to quantify the performance of node attribute generation. Extensive experiments are conducted on four real-world datasets and the empirical results show that node attributes generated by the proposed method are high-qualitative and beneficial to other applications. The datasets and codes are available online.

Weak ferromagnetic insulator with huge coercivity in monoclinic double perovskite La2CuIrO6

Insulating ferromagnets with high TC are required for many new magnetic devices. More complexity arises when strongly correlated 3d ions coexist with strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d ones in a double perovskite. Here, we perform the structural, magnetic, and density functional theory study of such double perovskite La2CuIrO6. A new P21/n polymorph is found according to the comprehensive analysis of x-ray, Raman scattering and phonon spectrum. The magnetization reveals a weak ferromagnetic (FM) transition at TC = 62 K and short range FM order in higher temperature range. A huge coercivity is found as high as HC~11.96 kOe at 10K, which in combination with the negative trapped field results in the magnetization reversal in the zero field cooling measurement. The first principle calculations confirm the observed FM state and suggest La2CuIrO6 of this polymorph is a Mott insulating ferromagnet assisted by the spin-orbit coupling.

In-Edge AI: Intelligentizing Mobile Edge Computing, Caching and Communication by Federated Learning

Recently, along with the rapid development of mobile communication technology, edge computing theory and techniques have been attracting more and more attentions from global researchers and engineers, which can significantly bridge the capacity of cloud and requirement of devices by the network edges, and thus can accelerate the content deliveries and improve the quality of mobile services. In order to bring more intelligence to the edge systems, compared to traditional optimization methodology, and driven by the current deep learning techniques, we propose to integrate the Deep Reinforcement Learning techniques and Federated Learning framework with the mobile edge systems, for optimizing the mobile edge computing, caching and communication. And thus, we design the "In-Edge AI" framework in order to intelligently utilize the collaboration among devices and edge nodes to exchange the learning parameters for a better training and inference of the models, and thus to carry out dynamic system-level optimization and application-level enhancement while reducing the unnecessary system communication load. "In-Edge AI" is evaluated and proved to have near-optimal performance but relatively low overhead of learning, while the system is cognitive and adaptive to the mobile communication systems. Finally, we discuss several related challenges and opportunities for unveiling a promising upcoming future of "In-Edge AI".

First Detection of Photons with Energy Beyond 100 TeV from an Astrophysical Source

We report on the highest energy photons from the Crab Nebula observed by the Tibet air shower array with the underground water-Cherenkov-type muon detector array. Based on the criterion of muon number measured in an air shower, we successfully suppress 99.92% of the cosmic-ray background events with energies $E>100$ TeV. As a result, we observed 24 photon-like events with $E>100$ TeV against 5.5 background events, which corresponds to 5.6$σ$ statistical significance. This is the first detection of photons with $E>100$ TeV from an astrophysical source.

Unpaired Pose Guided Human Image Generation

This paper studies the task of full generative modelling of realistic images of humans, guided only by coarse sketch of the pose, while providing control over the specific instance or type of outfit worn by the user. This is a difficult problem because input and output domain are very different and direct image-to-image translation becomes infeasible. We propose an end-to-end trainable network under the generative adversarial framework, that provides detailed control over the final appearance while not requiring paired training data and hence allows us to forgo the challenging problem of fitting 3D poses to 2D images. The model allows to generate novel samples conditioned on either an image taken from the target domain or a class label indicating the style of clothing (e.g., t-shirt). We thoroughly evaluate the architecture and the contributions of the individual components experimentally. Finally, we show in a large scale perceptual study that our approach can generate realistic looking images and that participants struggle in detecting fake images versus real samples, especially if faces are blurred.

Photometric investigations on two totally eclipsing contact binaries: V342 UMa and V509 Cam

By analyzing two sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V342 UMa and three sets of complete $BVR_cI_c$ light curves of V509 Cam, we determined that the two systems are both W-subtype contact binaries and that V342 UMa shows a shallow contact configuration, while V509 Cam exhibits a medium contact configuration. Since both of them are totally eclipsing binaries, the physical parameters derived only by the photometric light curves are reliable.Meanwhile, the period changes of the two targets were analyzed based on all available eclipsing times. We discovered that V342 UMa shows long-term period decrease with a rate of $-1.02(\pm0.54)\times10^{-7}$ days/year and that V509 Cam exhibits long-term period increase with a rate of $3.96(\pm0.90)\times10^{-8}$ days/year. Both the conservative mass transfer and AML via magnetic stellar winds can interpret the long-term period decrease of V342 UMa. The long-term period increase of V509 Cam can be explained by mass transfer from the less massive star to the more massive one. The absolute parameters of the two binaries were estimated according to the Gaia distances and our derived photometric solution results. This method can be extended to other contact binaries without radial velocities but with reliable photometric solutions. The evolutionary states of them were discussed, we found that they reveal identical properties of other W-subtype contact systems.

Edge Intelligence: Paving the Last Mile of Artificial Intelligence with Edge Computing

With the breakthroughs in deep learning, the recent years have witnessed a booming of artificial intelligence (AI) applications and services, spanning from personal assistant to recommendation systems to video/audio surveillance. More recently, with the proliferation of mobile computing and Internet-of-Things (IoT), billions of mobile and IoT devices are connected to the Internet, generating zillions Bytes of data at the network edge. Driving by this trend, there is an urgent need to push the AI frontiers to the network edge so as to fully unleash the potential of the edge big data. To meet this demand, edge computing, an emerging paradigm that pushes computing tasks and services from the network core to the network edge, has been widely recognized as a promising solution. The resulted new inter-discipline, edge AI or edge intelligence, is beginning to receive a tremendous amount of interest. We then provide an overview of the overarching architectures, frameworks and emerging key technologies for deep learning model towards training/inference at the network edge. Finally, we discuss future research opportunities on edge intelligence. We believe that this survey will elicit escalating attentions, stimulate fruitful discussions and inspire further research ideas on edge intelligence.

Anomalous Dome-like Superconductivity in RE2(Cu1-xNix)5As3O2(RE=La, Pr, Nd)

Significant manifestation of interplay of superconductivity and charge density wave, spin density wave or magnetism is dome-like variation in superconducting critical temperature (Tc) for cuprate, iron-based and heavy Fermion superconductors. Overall behavior is that the ordered temperature is gradually suppressed and the Tc is enhanced under external control parameters. Many phenomena like pesudogap, quantum critical point and strange metal emerge in the different doping range. Exploring dome-shaped Tc in new superconductors is of importance to detect emergent effects. Here, we report that the observation of superconductivity in new layered Cu-based compound RE2Cu5As3O2 (RE=La, Pr, Nd), in which the Tc exhibits dome-like variation with maximum Tc of 2.5 K, 1.2 K and 1.0 K as substituting Cu by large amount of Ni ions. The transitions of T* in former two compounds can be suppressed by either Ni doping or rare earth replacement. Simultaneously, the structural parameters like As-As bond length and c/a ratio exhibit unusual variations as Ni-doping level goes through the optimal value. The robustness of superconductivity, up to 60% of Ni doping, reveals the unexpected impurity effect on inducing and enhancing superconductivity in this novel layered materials
