Asynchronous Massive Access and Neighbor Discovery Using OFDMA

The fundamental communication problem in the wireless Internet of Things (IoT) is to discover a massive number of devices and to allow them reliable access to shared channels. Oftentimes these devices transmit short messages randomly and sporadically. This paper proposes a novel signaling scheme for grant-free massive access, where each device encodes its identity and/or information in a sparse set of tones. Such transmissions are implemented in the form of orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA). Under some mild conditions and assuming device delays to be bounded unknown multiples of symbol intervals, sparse OFDMA is proved to enable arbitrarily reliable asynchronous device identification and message decoding with a codelength that is O(K(log K + log S + log N)), where N denotes the device population, K denotes the actual number of active devices, and log S is essentially equal to the number of bits a device can send (including its identity). By exploiting the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the computational complexity for discovery and decoding can be made to be sub-linear in the total device population. To prove the concept, a specific design is proposed to identify up to 100 active devices out of $2^{38}$ possible devices with up to 20 symbols of delay and moderate signal-to-noise ratios and fading. The codelength compares much more favorably with those of standard slotted ALOHA and carrier-sensing multiple access (CSMA) schemes.

Discovery of two families of VSb-based compounds with V-kagome lattice

We report the structure and physical properties of two newly-discovered compounds AV8Sb12 and AV6Sb6 (A = Cs, Rb), which have C2 (space group: Cmmm) and C3 (space group: R-3m) symmetry, respectively. The basic V-kagome unit is present in both compounds, but stacking differently. A V2Sb2 layer is sandwiched between two V3Sb5 layers in AV8Sb12, altering the V-kagome lattice and lowering the symmetry of kagome layer from hexagonal to orthorhombic. In AV6Sb6, the building block is a more complex slab made up of two half-V3Sb5 layers that are intercalated by Cs cations along the c-axis. Transport property measurements demonstrate that both compounds are nonmagnetic metals, with carrier concentrations at around 1021cm-3. No superconductivity has been observed in CsV8Sb12 above 0.3 K under in-situ pressure up to 46 GPa. In contrast to CsV3Sb5, theoretical calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveal a quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure in CsV8Sb12 with C2 symmetry and no van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. Our findings will stimulate more research into V-based kagome quantum materials.

A possible tidal disruption event candidate in the black hole binary system of OJ 287

The BL Lacertae OJ 287 is a supermassive black holes binary (SMBHB) system with complex physics of its irregular flares. During 2016 October -- 2017 April period, a surprising outburst in the X-ray, UV and optical bands was detected, while no variability was seen in the $γ$-ray light curve. During the outburst, the X-ray light curves were dominated by the soft X-rays, whose peak in the luminosity was $\sim$ $10^{46}\text{erg}~\text{s}^{-1}$ -- more than 10 times higher than the mean level before the outburst -- and a "softer-when-brighter" phenomenon was exhibited. These above phenomena have been reported by some previous works. The hardness ratio showed negligible evolution with flare time and soft X-ray luminosity. Critically, the luminosity of the soft X-rays decayed following a power law of $t^{-5/3}$ which occurs in most tidal disruption events (TDEs), and similar trend can be seen in UV and optical bands during the soft X-ray declining period. Helium and oxygen narrow emission lines are strengthened prominently in the optical spectra of postoutburst epochs, that could be attributed to the surrounding gas appeared due to TDE. We discuss three possible origins of the event, including the jet's precession, the aftereffect of the black hole-disk impaction and the TDE. Our results show that the TDE is the more likely scenario to explain the outburst.

Inhomogeneous Social Recommendation with Hypergraph Convolutional Networks

Incorporating social relations into the recommendation system, i.e. social recommendation, has been widely studied in academic and industrial communities. While many promising results have been achieved, existing methods mostly assume that the social relations can be homogeneously applied to all the items, which is not practical for users' actually diverse preferences. In this paper, we argue that the effect of the social relations should be inhomogeneous, that is, two socially-related users may only share the same preference on some specific items, while for the other products, their preferences can be inconsistent or even contradictory. Inspired by this idea, we build a novel social recommendation model, where the traditional pair-wise "user-user'' relation is extended to the triple relation of "user-item-user''. To well handle such high-order relations, we base our framework on the hypergraph. More specifically, each hyperedge connects a user-user-item triplet, representing that the two users share similar preferences on the item. We develop a Social HyperGraph Convolutional Network (short for SHGCN) to learn from the complex triplet social relations. With the hypergraph convolutional networks, the social relations can be modeled in a more fine-grained manner, which more accurately depicts real users' preferences, and benefits the recommendation performance. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets demonstrate our model's effectiveness. Studies on data sparsity and hyper-parameter studies further validate our model's rationality. Our codes and dataset are available at https://github.com/ziruizhu/SHGCN.

Render In-between: Motion Guided Video Synthesis for Action Interpolation

Upsampling videos of human activity is an interesting yet challenging task with many potential applications ranging from gaming to entertainment and sports broadcasting. The main difficulty in synthesizing video frames in this setting stems from the highly complex and non-linear nature of human motion and the complex appearance and texture of the body. We propose to address these issues in a motion-guided frame-upsampling framework that is capable of producing realistic human motion and appearance. A novel motion model is trained to inference the non-linear skeletal motion between frames by leveraging a large-scale motion-capture dataset (AMASS). The high-frame-rate pose predictions are then used by a neural rendering pipeline to produce the full-frame output, taking the pose and background consistency into consideration. Our pipeline only requires low-frame-rate videos and unpaired human motion data but does not require high-frame-rate videos for training. Furthermore, we contribute the first evaluation dataset that consists of high-quality and high-frame-rate videos of human activities for this task. Compared with state-of-the-art video interpolation techniques, our method produces in-between frames with better quality and accuracy, which is evident by state-of-the-art results on pixel-level, distributional metrics and comparative user evaluations. Our code and the collected dataset are available at https://git.io/Render-In-Between.

The X-ray outburst of PG 1553+113: A precession effect of two jets in the supermassive black hole binary system

Blazar PG 1553+113 is thought to be a host of supermassive black hole binary (SMBHB) system. A 2.2-year quasi-periodicity in the $γ$-ray light curve was detected, possibly result of jet precession. Motivated by the previous studies based on the $γ$-ray data, we analyzed the X-ray light curve and spectra observed during 2012--2020. The 2.2-year quasi-periodicity might be consistent with the main-flare recurrence in the X-ray light curve. When a weak rebrightening in the $γ$-ray was observed, a corresponding relatively strong brightening in the X-ray light curve can be identified. The "harder-when-brighter" tendency in both X-ray main and weak flares was shown, as well as a weak "softer-when-brighter" behavior for the quiescent state. We explore the possibility that the variability in the X-ray band can be interpreted with two-jet precession scenario. Using the relation between jets and accretion discs, we derive the primary black hole mass $\simeq 3.47\times 10^8M_{\odot}$ and mass of the secondary one $\simeq 1.40\times 10^8M_{\odot}$, and their mass ratio $\sim 0.41$.

Shape-aware Multi-Person Pose Estimation from Multi-View Images

In this paper we contribute a simple yet effective approach for estimating 3D poses of multiple people from multi-view images. Our proposed coarse-to-fine pipeline first aggregates noisy 2D observations from multiple camera views into 3D space and then associates them into individual instances based on a confidence-aware majority voting technique. The final pose estimates are attained from a novel optimization scheme which links high-confidence multi-view 2D observations and 3D joint candidates. Moreover, a statistical parametric body model such as SMPL is leveraged as a regularizing prior for these 3D joint candidates. Specifically, both 3D poses and SMPL parameters are optimized jointly in an alternating fashion. Here the parametric models help in correcting implausible 3D pose estimates and filling in missing joint detections while updated 3D poses in turn guide obtaining better SMPL estimations. By linking 2D and 3D observations, our method is both accurate and generalizes to different data sources because it better decouples the final 3D pose from the inter-person constellation and is more robust to noisy 2D detections. We systematically evaluate our method on public datasets and achieve state-of-the-art performance. The code and video will be available on the project page: https://ait.ethz.ch/projects/2021/multi-human-pose/.

Two contact binaries with mass ratios close to the minimum mass ratio

The cut-off mass ratio is under debate for contact binaries. In this paper, we present the investigation of two contact binaries with mass ratios close to the low mass ratio limit. It is found that the mass ratios of VSX J082700.8+462850 (hereafter J082700) and 1SWASP J132829.37+555246.1 (hereafter J132829) are both less than 0.1 ($q\sim0.055$ for J082700, and $q\sim0.089$ for J132829). J082700 is a shallow contact binary with a contact degree of $\sim$19%, and J132829 is a deep contact system with a fillout factor of $\sim$70%. The $O-C$ diagram analysis indicated that both the two systems manifest long-term period decrease. In addition, J082700 exhibits a cyclic modulation which is more likely resulted from Applegate mechanism. In order to explore the properties of extremely low mass ratio contact binaries (ELMRCBs), we carried out a statistical analysis on contact binaries with mass ratios of $q\lesssim0.1$ and discovered that the values of $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$ of three systems are greater than 1/3. Two possible explanations can interpret this phenomenon. One is that some physical processes, unknown to date, are not considered when Hut presented the dynamically instability criterion. The other is that the dimensionless gyration radius ($k$) should be smaller than the value we used ($k^2=0.06$). We also found that the formation of ELMRCBs possibly has two channels. The study of evolutionary states of ELMRCBs reveals that their evolutionary states are similar with those of normal W UMa contact binaries.

What is Semantic Communication? A View on Conveying Meaning in the Era of Machine Intelligence

In 1940s, Claude Shannon developed the information theory focusing on quantifying the maximum data rate that can be supported by a communication channel. Guided by this, the main theme of wireless system design up until 5G was the data rate maximization. In his theory, the semantic aspect and meaning of messages were treated as largely irrelevant to communication. The classic theory started to reveal its limitations in the modern era of machine intelligence, consisting of the synergy between IoT and AI. By broadening the scope of the classic framework, in this article we present a view of semantic communication (SemCom) and conveying meaning through the communication systems. We address three communication modalities, human-to-human (H2H), human-to-machine (H2M), and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. The latter two, the main theme of the article, represent the paradigm shift in communication and computing. H2M SemCom refers to semantic techniques for conveying meanings understandable by both humans and machines so that they can interact. M2M SemCom refers to effectiveness techniques for efficiently connecting machines such that they can effectively execute a specific computation task in a wireless network. The first part of the article introduces SemCom principles including encoding, system architecture, and layer-coupling and end-to-end design approaches. The second part focuses on specific techniques for application areas of H2M (human and AI symbiosis, recommendation, etc.) and M2M SemCom (distributed learning, split inference, etc.) Finally, we discuss the knowledge graphs approach for designing SemCom systems. We believe that this comprehensive introduction will provide a useful guide into the emerging area of SemCom that is expected to play an important role in 6G featuring connected intelligence and integrated sensing, computing, communication, and control.

Spin-flip-driven giant magneto-transport in A-type antiferromagnet NaCrTe2

For anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) effect, its value synergistically depends on the magnitudes of magneto-resistance (MR) and magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) simultaneously. In a magnetic material, the concurrence of gigantic AMR and MR signals is rather difficult due to weak spin-lattice coupling and small MAE. Here we report the considerable magneto-transport effect in layered A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) NaCrTe2 by realigning the spin configurations. By applying H, the antiparallel spins of adjacent layers are flipped to ferromagnetic (FM) coupling either Ising-type along c-axis or XY-type within ab-plane. Theoretical calculations reveal that the energy bandgap narrows from 0.39 eV to 0.11 eV, accompanying a transition from semiconductor (high-R state) and half-semiconductor (low-R state), respectively. Thus, gigantic negative MR ratio of -90% is obtained at 10 K. More importantly, the decrement of R along H//c is far quicker than that of H//ab because the MAE of Ising-FM state is 1017 μeV/Cr3+ lower than that of XY-FM. The distinct trends result in the AMR ratio of 732% at 10 K, which is the record value to our best knowledge. These findings unravel the intrinsic origin of magneto in NaCrTe2 and will stimulate us to exploring the H-sensitive transport property in more AFM materials.

Competition of superconductivity and charge density wave in selective oxidized CsV3Sb5 thin flakes

The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with vanadium kagome networks provide a novel platform to explore correlated quantum states intertwined with topological band structures. Here we report the prominent effect of hole doping on both superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order, achieved by selective oxidation of exfoliated thin flakes. A superconducting dome is revealed as a function of the effective doping content. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and upper critical field in thin flakes are significantly enhanced compared with the bulk, which is accompanied by the suppression of CDW. Our detailed analyses establish the pivotal role of van Hove singularities (VHSs) in promoting correlated quantum orders in these kagome metals. Our experiment not only demonstrates the intriguing nature of superconducting and CDW orders, but also provides a novel route to tune the carrier concentration through both selective oxidation and electric gating. This establishes AV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a tunable 2D platform for the further exploration of topology and correlation among 3$d$ electrons in kagome lattices.

Constraining Evolution of Magnetic Field Strength in Dissipation Region of Two BL Lac Objects

With the assumption that the optical variability timescale is dominated by the cooling time of the synchrotron process for BL Lac objects, we estimate time dependent magnetic field strength of the emission region for two BL Lac objects. The average magnetic field strengths are consistent with those estimated from core shift measurement and spectral energy distribution modelling. Variation of magnetic field strength in dissipation region is discovered. Variability of flux and magnetic field strength show no clear correlation, which indicates the variation of magnetic field is not the dominant reason of variability origin. The evolution of magnetic field strength can provide another approach to constrain the energy dissipation mechanism in jet.

Top-N Recommendation with Counterfactual User Preference Simulation

Top-N recommendation, which aims to learn user ranking-based preference, has long been a fundamental problem in a wide range of applications. Traditional models usually motivate themselves by designing complex or tailored architectures based on different assumptions. However, the training data of recommender system can be extremely sparse and imbalanced, which poses great challenges for boosting the recommendation performance. To alleviate this problem, in this paper, we propose to reformulate the recommendation task within the causal inference framework, which enables us to counterfactually simulate user ranking-based preferences to handle the data scarce problem. The core of our model lies in the counterfactual question: "what would be the user's decision if the recommended items had been different?". To answer this question, we firstly formulate the recommendation process with a series of structural equation models (SEMs), whose parameters are optimized based on the observed data. Then, we actively indicate many recommendation lists (called intervention in the causal inference terminology) which are not recorded in the dataset, and simulate user feedback according to the learned SEMs for generating new training samples. Instead of randomly intervening on the recommendation list, we design a learning-based method to discover more informative training samples. Considering that the learned SEMs can be not perfect, we, at last, theoretically analyze the relation between the number of generated samples and the model prediction error, based on which a heuristic method is designed to control the negative effect brought by the prediction error. Extensive experiments are conducted based on both synthetic and real-world datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework.

Cost-efficient and Skew-aware Data Scheduling for Incremental Learning in 5G Network

To facilitate the emerging applications in 5G networks, mobile network operators will provide many network functions in terms of control and prediction. Recently, they have recognized the power of machine learning (ML) and started to explore its potential to facilitate those network functions. Nevertheless, the current ML models for network functions are often derived in an offline manner, which is inefficient due to the excessive overhead for transmitting a huge volume of dataset to remote ML training clouds and failing to provide the incremental learning capability for the continuous model updating. As an alternative solution, we propose Cocktail, an incremental learning framework within a reference 5G network architecture. To achieve cost efficiency while increasing trained model accuracy, an efficient online data scheduling policy is essential. To this end, we formulate an online data scheduling problem to optimize the framework cost while alleviating the data skew issue caused by the capacity heterogeneity of training workers from the long-term perspective. We exploit the stochastic gradient descent to devise an online asymptotically optimal algorithm, including two optimal policies based on novel graph constructions for skew-aware data collection and data training. Small-scale testbed and large-scale simulations validate the superior performance of our proposed framework.

A Self-Supervised Deep Framework for Reference Bony Shape Estimation in Orthognathic Surgical Planning

Virtual orthognathic surgical planning involves simulating surgical corrections of jaw deformities on 3D facial bony shape models. Due to the lack of necessary guidance, the planning procedure is highly experience-dependent and the planning results are often suboptimal. A reference facial bony shape model representing normal anatomies can provide an objective guidance to improve planning accuracy. Therefore, we propose a self-supervised deep framework to automatically estimate reference facial bony shape models. Our framework is an end-to-end trainable network, consisting of a simulator and a corrector. In the training stage, the simulator maps jaw deformities of a patient bone to a normal bone to generate a simulated deformed bone. The corrector then restores the simulated deformed bone back to normal. In the inference stage, the trained corrector is applied to generate a patient-specific normal-looking reference bone from a real deformed bone. The proposed framework was evaluated using a clinical dataset and compared with a state-of-the-art method that is based on a supervised point-cloud network. Experimental results show that the estimated shape models given by our approach are clinically acceptable and significantly more accurate than that of the competing method.

Potential PeVatron supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 seen in the highest-energy gamma rays

Cosmic rays (protons and other atomic nuclei) are believed to gain energies of petaelectronvolts (PeV) and beyond at astrophysical particle accelerators called 'PeVatrons' inside our Galaxy. Although a characteristic feature of a PeVatron is expected to be a hard gamma-ray energy spectrum that extends beyond 100 teraelectronvolts (TeV) without a cutoff, none of the currently known sources exhibits such a spectrum due to the low maximum energy of accelerated cosmic rays or insufficient detector sensitivity around 100 TeV. Here we report the observation of gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 above 10 TeV. This work provides flux data points up to and above 100 TeV and indicates that the very-high-energy gamma-ray emission above 10 TeV is well correlated with a molecular cloud rather than the pulsar PSR J2229+6114. Regarding the gamma-ray emission mechanism of G106.3+2.7, this morphological feature appears to favor a hadronic origin via the π0 decay caused by accelerated relativistic protons over a leptonic one via the inverse-Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. Furthermore, we point out that an X-ray flux upper limit on the synchrotron spectrum would provide important information to firmly establish the hadronic scenario as the mechanism of particle acceleration at the source.

RecBole: Towards a Unified, Comprehensive and Efficient Framework for Recommendation Algorithms

In recent years, there are a large number of recommendation algorithms proposed in the literature, from traditional collaborative filtering to deep learning algorithms. However, the concerns about how to standardize open source implementation of recommendation algorithms continually increase in the research community. In the light of this challenge, we propose a unified, comprehensive and efficient recommender system library called RecBole, which provides a unified framework to develop and reproduce recommendation algorithms for research purpose. In this library, we implement 73 recommendation models on 28 benchmark datasets, covering the categories of general recommendation, sequential recommendation, context-aware recommendation and knowledge-based recommendation. We implement the RecBole library based on PyTorch, which is one of the most popular deep learning frameworks. Our library is featured in many aspects, including general and extensible data structures, comprehensive benchmark models and datasets, efficient GPU-accelerated execution, and extensive and standard evaluation protocols. We provide a series of auxiliary functions, tools, and scripts to facilitate the use of this library, such as automatic parameter tuning and break-point resume. Such a framework is useful to standardize the implementation and evaluation of recommender systems. The project and documents are released at https://recbole.io/.

Neuron Campaign for Initialization Guided by Information Bottleneck Theory

Initialization plays a critical role in the training of deep neural networks (DNN). Existing initialization strategies mainly focus on stabilizing the training process to mitigate gradient vanish/explosion problems. However, these initialization methods are lacking in consideration about how to enhance generalization ability. The Information Bottleneck (IB) theory is a well-known understanding framework to provide an explanation about the generalization of DNN. Guided by the insights provided by IB theory, we design two criteria for better initializing DNN. And we further design a neuron campaign initialization algorithm to efficiently select a good initialization for a neural network on a given dataset. The experiments on MNIST dataset show that our method can lead to a better generalization performance with faster convergence.
