Statistical inference for case-control logistic regression via integrating external summary data

Case-control sampling is a commonly used retrospective sampling design to alleviate imbalanced structure of binary data. When fitting the logistic regression model with case-control data, although the slope parameter of the model can be consistently estimated, the intercept parameter is not identifiable, and the marginal case proportion is not estimatable, either. We consider the situations in which besides the case-control data from the main study, called internal study, there also exists summary-level information from related external studies. An empirical likelihood based approach is proposed to make inference for the logistic model by incorporating the internal case-control data and external information. We show that the intercept parameter is identifiable with the help of external information, and then all the regression parameters as well as the marginal case proportion can be estimated consistently. The proposed method also accounts for the possible variability in external studies. The resultant estimators are shown to be asymptotically normally distributed. The asymptotic variance-covariance matrix can be consistently estimated by the case-control data. The optimal way to utilized external information is discussed. Simulation studies are conducted to verify the theoretical findings. A real data set is analyzed for illustration.

ChatBI: Towards Natural Language to Complex Business Intelligence SQL

The Natural Language to SQL (NL2SQL) technology provides non-expert users who are unfamiliar with databases the opportunity to use SQL for data analysis.Converting Natural Language to Business Intelligence (NL2BI) is a popular practical scenario for NL2SQL in actual production systems. Compared to NL2SQL, NL2BI introduces more challenges. In this paper, we propose ChatBI, a comprehensive and efficient technology for solving the NL2BI task. First, we analyze the interaction mode, an important module where NL2SQL and NL2BI differ in use, and design a smaller and cheaper model to match this interaction mode. In BI scenarios, tables contain a huge number of columns, making it impossible for existing NL2SQL methods that rely on Large Language Models (LLMs) for schema linking to proceed due to token limitations. The higher proportion of ambiguous columns in BI scenarios also makes schema linking difficult. ChatBI combines existing view technology in the database community to first decompose the schema linking problem into a Single View Selection problem and then uses a smaller and cheaper machine learning model to select the single view with a significantly reduced number of columns. The columns of this single view are then passed as the required columns for schema linking into the LLM. Finally, ChatBI proposes a phased process flow different from existing process flows, which allows ChatBI to generate SQL containing complex semantics and comparison relations more accurately. We have deployed ChatBI on Baidu's data platform and integrated it into multiple product lines for large-scale production task evaluation. The obtained results highlight its superiority in practicality, versatility, and efficiency. At the same time, compared with the current mainstream NL2SQL technology under our real BI scenario data tables and queries, it also achieved the best results.

Deep Representation Learning for Multi-functional Degradation Modeling of Community-dwelling Aging Population

As the aging population grows, particularly for the baby boomer generation, the United States is witnessing a significant increase in the elderly population experiencing multifunctional disabilities. These disabilities, stemming from a variety of chronic diseases, injuries, and impairments, present a complex challenge due to their multidimensional nature, encompassing both physical and cognitive aspects. Traditional methods often use univariate regression-based methods to model and predict single degradation conditions and assume population homogeneity, which is inadequate to address the complexity and diversity of aging-related degradation. This study introduces a novel framework for multi-functional degradation modeling that captures the multidimensional (e.g., physical and cognitive) and heterogeneous nature of elderly disabilities. Utilizing deep learning, our approach predicts health degradation scores and uncovers latent heterogeneity from elderly health histories, offering both efficient estimation and explainable insights into the diverse effects and causes of aging-related degradation. A real-case study demonstrates the effectiveness and marks a pivotal contribution to accurately modeling the intricate dynamics of elderly degradation, and addresses the healthcare challenges in the aging population.

Neurological disorders leading to mechanical dysfunction of the esophagus: an emergent behavior of a neuromechanical dynamical system

An understanding how neurological disorders lead to mechanical dysfunction of the esophagus requires knowledge of the neural circuit of the enteric nervous system. Historically, this has been elusive. Here, we present an empirically guided neural circuit for the esophagus. It has a chain of unidirectionally coupled relaxation oscillators, receiving excitatory signals from stretch receptors along the esophagus. The resulting neuromechanical model reveals complex patterns and behaviors that emerge from interacting components in the system. A wide variety of clinically observed normal and abnormal esophageal responses to distension are successfully predicted. Specifically, repetitive antegrade contractions (RACs) are conclusively shown to emerge from the coupled neuromechanical dynamics in response to sustained volumetric distension. Normal RACs are shown to have a robust balance between excitatory and inhibitory neuronal populations, and the mechanical input through stretch receptors. When this balance is affected, contraction patterns akin to motility disorders are observed. For example, clinically observed repetitive retrograde contractions emerge due to a hyper stretch sensitive wall. Such neuromechanical insights could be crucial to eventually develop targeted pharmacological interventions.

Text Classification Based on Knowledge Graphs and Improved Attention Mechanism

To resolve the semantic ambiguity in texts, we propose a model, which innovatively combines a knowledge graph with an improved attention mechanism. An existing knowledge base is utilized to enrich the text with relevant contextual concepts. The model operates at both character and word levels to deepen its understanding by integrating the concepts. We first adopt information gain to select import words. Then an encoder-decoder framework is used to encode the text along with the related concepts. The local attention mechanism adjusts the weight of each concept, reducing the influence of irrelevant or noisy concepts during classification. We improve the calculation formula for attention scores in the local self-attention mechanism, ensuring that words with different frequencies of occurrence in the text receive higher attention scores. Finally, the model employs a Bi-directional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU), which is effective in feature extraction from texts for improved classification accuracy. Its performance is demonstrated on datasets such as AGNews, Ohsumed, and TagMyNews, achieving accuracy of 75.1%, 58.7%, and 68.5% respectively, showing its effectiveness in classifying tasks.

MEDs for PETs: Multilingual Euphemism Disambiguation for Potentially Euphemistic Terms

This study investigates the computational processing of euphemisms, a universal linguistic phenomenon, across multiple languages. We train a multilingual transformer model (XLM-RoBERTa) to disambiguate potentially euphemistic terms (PETs) in multilingual and cross-lingual settings. In line with current trends, we demonstrate that zero-shot learning across languages takes place. We also show cases where multilingual models perform better on the task compared to monolingual models by a statistically significant margin, indicating that multilingual data presents additional opportunities for models to learn about cross-lingual, computational properties of euphemisms. In a follow-up analysis, we focus on universal euphemistic "categories" such as death and bodily functions among others. We test to see whether cross-lingual data of the same domain is more important than within-language data of other domains to further understand the nature of the cross-lingual transfer.

Guided Image Restoration via Simultaneous Feature and Image Guided Fusion

Guided image restoration (GIR), such as guided depth map super-resolution and pan-sharpening, aims to enhance a target image using guidance information from another image of the same scene. Currently, joint image filtering-inspired deep learning-based methods represent the state-of-the-art for GIR tasks. Those methods either deal with GIR in an end-to-end way by elaborately designing filtering-oriented deep neural network (DNN) modules, focusing on the feature-level fusion of inputs; or explicitly making use of the traditional joint filtering mechanism by parameterizing filtering coefficients with DNNs, working on image-level fusion. The former ones are good at recovering contextual information but tend to lose fine-grained details, while the latter ones can better retain textual information but might lead to content distortions. In this work, to inherit the advantages of both methodologies while mitigating their limitations, we proposed a Simultaneous Feature and Image Guided Fusion (SFIGF) network, that simultaneously considers feature and image-level guided fusion following the guided filter (GF) mechanism. In the feature domain, we connect the cross-attention (CA) with GF, and propose a GF-inspired CA module for better feature-level fusion; in the image domain, we fully explore the GF mechanism and design GF-like structure for better image-level fusion. Since guided fusion is implemented in both feature and image domains, the proposed SFIGF is expected to faithfully reconstruct both contextual and textual information from sources and thus lead to better GIR results. We apply SFIGF to 4 typical GIR tasks, and experimental results on these tasks demonstrate its effectiveness and general availability.

Guided Online Distillation: Promoting Safe Reinforcement Learning by Offline Demonstration

Safe Reinforcement Learning (RL) aims to find a policy that achieves high rewards while satisfying cost constraints. When learning from scratch, safe RL agents tend to be overly conservative, which impedes exploration and restrains the overall performance. In many realistic tasks, e.g. autonomous driving, large-scale expert demonstration data are available. We argue that extracting expert policy from offline data to guide online exploration is a promising solution to mitigate the conserveness issue. Large-capacity models, e.g. decision transformers (DT), have been proven to be competent in offline policy learning. However, data collected in real-world scenarios rarely contain dangerous cases (e.g., collisions), which makes it prohibitive for the policies to learn safety concepts. Besides, these bulk policy networks cannot meet the computation speed requirements at inference time on real-world tasks such as autonomous driving. To this end, we propose Guided Online Distillation (GOLD), an offline-to-online safe RL framework. GOLD distills an offline DT policy into a lightweight policy network through guided online safe RL training, which outperforms both the offline DT policy and online safe RL algorithms. Experiments in both benchmark safe RL tasks and real-world driving tasks based on the Waymo Open Motion Dataset (WOMD) demonstrate that GOLD can successfully distill lightweight policies and solve decision-making problems in challenging safety-critical scenarios.

Influence Pathway Discovery on Social Media

This paper addresses influence pathway discovery, a key emerging problem in today's online media. We propose a discovery algorithm that leverages recently published work on unsupervised interpretable ideological embedding, a mapping of ideological beliefs (done in a self-supervised fashion) into interpretable low-dimensional spaces. Computing the ideological embedding at scale allows one to analyze correlations between the ideological positions of leaders, influencers, news portals, or population segments, deriving potential influence pathways. The work is motivated by the importance of social media as the preeminent means for global interactions and collaborations on today's Internet, as well as their frequent (mis-)use to wield influence that targets social beliefs and attitudes of selected populations. Tools that enable the understanding and mapping of influence propagation through population segments on social media are therefore increasingly important. In this paper, influence is measured by the perceived ideological shift over time that is correlated with influencers' activity. Correlated shifts in ideological embeddings indicate changes, such as swings/switching (among competing ideologies), polarization (depletion of neutral ideological positions), escalation/radicalization (shifts to more extreme versions of the ideology), or unification/cooldown (shifts towards more neutral stances). Case-studies are presented to explore selected influence pathways (i) in a recent French election, (ii) during political discussions in the Philippines, and (iii) for some Russian messaging during the Russia/Ukraine conflict.

UD-MAC: Delay Tolerant Multiple Access Control Protocol for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Networks

In unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks, high-capacity data transmission is of utmost importance for applications such as intelligent transportation, smart cities, and forest monitoring, which rely on the mobility of UAVs to collect and transmit large amount of data, including video and image data. Due to the short flight time of UAVs, the network capacity will be reduced when they return to the ground unit for charging. Hence, we suggest that UAVs can apply a store-carry-and-forward (SCF) transmission mode to carry packets on their way back to the ground unit for improving network throughput. In this paper, we propose a novel protocol, named UAV delay-tolerant multiple access control (UD-MAC), which can support different transmission modes in UAV networks. We set a higher priority for SCF transmission and analyze the probability of being in SCF mode to derive network throughput. The simulation results show that the network throughput of UD-MAC is improved by 57% to 83% compared to VeMAC.

Unsupervised Image Classification by Ideological Affiliation from User-Content Interaction Patterns

The proliferation of political memes in modern information campaigns calls for efficient solutions for image classification by ideological affiliation. While significant advances have recently been made on text classification in modern natural language processing literature, understanding the political insinuation in imagery is less developed due to the hard nature of the problem. Unlike text, where meaning arises from juxtaposition of tokens (words) within some common linguistic structures, image semantics emerge from a much less constrained process of fusion of visual concepts. Thus, training a model to infer visual insinuation is possibly a more challenging problem. In this paper, we explore an alternative unsupervised approach that, instead, infers ideological affiliation from image propagation patterns on social media. The approach is shown to improve the F1-score by over 0.15 (nearly 25%) over previous unsupervised baselines, and then by another 0.05 (around 7%) in the presence of a small amount of supervision.

Rotation to Sparse Loadings using $L^p$ Losses and Related Inference Problems

Researchers have widely used exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to learn the latent structure underlying multivariate data. Rotation and regularised estimation are two classes of methods in EFA that they often use to find interpretable loading matrices. In this paper we propose a new family of oblique rotations based on component-wise $L^p$ loss functions $(0 < p\leq 1)$ that is closely related to an $L^p$ regularised estimator. We develop model selection and post-selection inference procedures based on the proposed rotation method. When the true loading matrix is sparse, the proposed method tends to outperform traditional rotation and regularised estimation methods in terms of statistical accuracy and computational cost. Since the proposed loss functions are nonsmooth, we develop an iteratively reweighted gradient projection algorithm for solving the optimisation problem. We also develop theoretical results that establish the statistical consistency of the estimation, model selection, and post-selection inference. We evaluate the proposed method and compare it with regularised estimation and traditional rotation methods via simulation studies. We further illustrate it using an application to the Big Five personality assessment.

Orientation-dependent electron-phonon coupling in interfacial superconductors LaAlO3/KTaO3

The emergent superconductivity at the LaAlO3/KTaO3 interfaces exhibits a mysterious dependence on the KTaO3 crystallographic orientations. Here we show, by soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, that the interfacial superconductivity is contributed by mobile electrons with unexpected quasi-three-dimensional character, beyond the "two-dimensional electron gas" scenario in describing oxide interfaces. At differently-oriented interfaces, the quasi-three-dimensional electron gas ubiquitously exists and spatially overlaps with the small q Fuchs-Kliewer surface phonons. Intriguingly, electrons and the Fuchs-Kliewer phonons couple with different strengths depending on the interfacial orientations, and the stronger coupling correlates with the higher superconducting transition temperature. Our results provide a natural explanation for the orientation-dependent superconductivity, and the first evidence that interfacial orientations can affect electron-phonon coupling strength over several nanometers, which may have profound implications for the applications of oxide interfaces in general.

Exploring Text Selection in Augmented Reality Systems

Text selection is a common and essential activity during text interaction in all interactive systems. As Augmented Reality (AR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) become more widespread, they will need to provide effective interaction techniques for text selection that ensure users can complete a range of text manipulation tasks (e.g., to highlight, copy, and paste text, send instant messages, and browse the web). As a relatively new platform, text selection in AR is largely unexplored and the suitability of interaction techniques supported by current AR HMDs for text selection tasks is unclear. This research aims to fill this gap and reports on an experiment with 12 participants, which compares the performance and usability (user experience and workload) of four possible techniques (Hand+Pinch, Hand+Dwell, Head+Pinch, and Head+Dwell). Our results suggest that Head+Dwell should be the default selection technique, as it is relatively fast, has the lowest error rate and workload, and has the highest-rated user experience and social acceptance.

Completing point cloud from few points by Wasserstein GAN and Transformers

In many vision and robotics applications, it is common that the captured objects are represented by very few points. Most of the existing completion methods are designed for partial point clouds with many points, and they perform poorly or even fail completely in the case of few points. However, due to the lack of detail information, completing objects from few points faces a huge challenge. Inspired by the successful applications of GAN and Transformers in the image-based vision task, we introduce GAN and Transformer techniques to address the above problem. Firstly, the end-to-end encoder-decoder network with Transformers and the Wasserstein GAN with Transformer are pre-trained, and then the overall network is fine-tuned. Experimental results on the ShapeNet dataset show that our method can not only improve the completion performance for many input points, but also keep stable for few input points. Our source code is available at https://github.com/WxfQjh/Stability-point-recovery.git.

Low-Rank Tensor Completion Based on Bivariate Equivalent Minimax-Concave Penalty

Low-rank tensor completion (LRTC) is an important problem in computer vision and machine learning. The minimax-concave penalty (MCP) function as a non-convex relaxation has achieved good results in the LRTC problem. To makes all the constant parameters of the MCP function as variables so that futherly improving the adaptability to the change of singular values in the LRTC problem, we propose the bivariate equivalent minimax-concave penalty (BEMCP) theorem. Applying the BEMCP theorem to tensor singular values leads to the bivariate equivalent weighted tensor $Γ$-norm (BEWTGN) theorem, and we analyze and discuss its corresponding properties. Besides, to facilitate the solution of the LRTC problem, we give the proximal operators of the BEMCP theorem and BEWTGN. Meanwhile, we propose a BEMCP model for the LRTC problem, which is optimally solved based on alternating direction multiplier (ADMM). Finally, the proposed method is applied to the data restorations of multispectral image (MSI), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and color video (CV) in real-world, and the experimental results demonstrate that it outperforms the state-of-arts methods.

Two New Low Rank Tensor Completion Methods Based on Sum Nuclear Norm

The low rank tensor completion (LRTC) problem has attracted great attention in computer vision and signal processing. How to acquire high quality image recovery effect is still an urgent task to be solved at present. This paper proposes a new tensor $L_{2,1}$ norm minimization model (TLNM) that integrates sum nuclear norm (SNN) method, differing from the classical tensor nuclear norm (TNN)-based tensor completion method, with $L_{2,1}$ norm and Qatar Riyal decomposition for solving the LRTC problem. To improve the utilization rate of the local prior information of the image, a total variation (TV) regularization term is introduced, resulting in a new class of tensor $L_{2,1}$ norm minimization with total variation model (TLNMTV). Both proposed models are convex and therefore have global optimal solutions. Moreover, we adopt the Alternating Direction Multiplier Method (ADMM) to obtain the closed-form solution of each variable, thus ensuring the feasibility of the algorithm. Numerical experiments show that the two proposed algorithms are convergent and outperform compared methods. In particular, our method significantly outperforms the contrastive methods when the sampling rate of hyperspectral images is 2.5\%.

Tensor Full Feature Measure and Its Nonconvex Relaxation Applications to Tensor Recovery

Tensor sparse modeling as a promising approach, in the whole of science and engineering has been a huge success. As is known to all, various data in practical application are often generated by multiple factors, so the use of tensors to represent the data containing the internal structure of multiple factors came into being. However, different from the matrix case, constructing reasonable sparse measure of tensor is a relatively difficult and very important task. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new tensor sparsity measure called Tensor Full Feature Measure (FFM). It can simultaneously describe the feature information of each dimension of the tensor and the related features between two dimensions, and connect the Tucker rank with the tensor tube rank. This measurement method can describe the sparse features of the tensor more comprehensively. On this basis, we establish its non-convex relaxation, and apply FFM to low rank tensor completion (LRTC) and tensor robust principal component analysis (TRPCA). LRTC and TRPCA models based on FFM are proposed, and two efficient Alternating Direction Multiplier Method (ADMM) algorithms are developed to solve the proposed model. A variety of real numerical experiments substantiate the superiority of the proposed methods beyond state-of-the-arts.
