GRB 211024B: an ultra-long GRB powered by magnetar

Ultra-long gamma-ray bursts (ULGRBs) are characterized by exceptionally long-duration central engine activities, with characteristic timescales exceeding 1000 seconds. We present ground-based optical afterglow observations of the ultra-long gamma-ray burst GRB 211024B, detected by \textit{Swift}. Its X-ray light curve exhibits a characteristic ``internal plateau" with a shallow decay phase lasting approximately $\sim 15$ ks, followed by a steep decline ($α_{\rm drop}\sim-7.5$). Moreover, the early optical emission predicted by the late r-band optical afterglow is significantly higher than the observed value, indicating an external shock with energy injection. To explain these observations, we propose a magnetar central engine model. The magnetar collapse into a black hole due to spin-down or hyperaccretion, leading to the observed steep break in the X-ray light curve. The afterglow model fitting reveals that the afterglow injection luminosity varies with different assumptions of the circumburst medium density, implying different potential energy sources. For the interstellar medium (ISM) case with a fixed injection end time, the energy may originate from the magnetar's dipole radiation. However, in other scenarios, relativistic jets produced by the magnetar/black hole system could be the primary energy source.

Electric imaging and dynamics of photo-charged graphene edge

The one-dimensional side gate based on graphene edges shows a significant capability of reducing the channel length of field-effect transistors, further increasing the integration density of semiconductor devices. The nano-scale electric field distribution near the edge provides the physical limit of the effective channel length, however, its imaging under ambient conditions still lacks, which is a critical aspect for the practical deployment of semiconductor devices. Here, we used scanning nitrogen-vacancy microscopy to investigate the electric field distribution near edges of a single-layer-graphene. Real-space scanning maps of photo-charged floating graphene flakes were acquired with a spatial resolution of $\sim$ 10 nm, and the electric edge effect was quantitatively studied by analyzing the NV spin energy level shifts due to the electric Stark effect. Since the graphene flakes are isolated from external electric sources, we brought out a theory based on photo-thermionic effect to explain the charge transfer from graphene to oxygen-terminated diamond probe with a disordered distribution of charge traps. Real-time tracing of electric fields detected the photo-thermionic emission process and the recombination process of the emitted electrons. This study provides a new perspective for graphene-based one-dimensional gates and opto-electronics with nanoscale real-space imaging, and moreover, offers a novel method to tune the chemical environment of diamond surfaces based on optical charge transfer.

Enhancing Performance and Scalability of Large-Scale Recommendation Systems with Jagged Flash Attention

The integration of hardware accelerators has significantly advanced the capabilities of modern recommendation systems, enabling the exploration of complex ranking paradigms previously deemed impractical. However, the GPU-based computational costs present substantial challenges. In this paper, we demonstrate our development of an efficiency-driven approach to explore these paradigms, moving beyond traditional reliance on native PyTorch modules. We address the specific challenges posed by ranking models' dependence on categorical features, which vary in length and complicate GPU utilization. We introduce Jagged Feature Interaction Kernels, a novel method designed to extract fine-grained insights from long categorical features through efficient handling of dynamically sized tensors. We further enhance the performance of attention mechanisms by integrating Jagged tensors with Flash Attention. Our novel Jagged Flash Attention achieves up to 9x speedup and 22x memory reduction compared to dense attention. Notably, it also outperforms dense flash attention, with up to 3x speedup and 53% more memory efficiency. In production models, we observe 10% QPS improvement and 18% memory savings, enabling us to scale our recommendation systems with longer features and more complex architectures.

LEO- and RIS-Empowered User Tracking: A Riemannian Manifold Approach

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have recently drawn significant attention as two transformative technologies, and the synergy between them emerges as a promising paradigm for providing cross-environment communication and positioning services. This paper investigates an integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial wireless network that leverages LEO satellites and RISs to achieve simultaneous tracking of the three-dimensional (3D) position, 3D velocity, and 3D orientation of user equipment (UE). To address inherent challenges including nonlinear observation function, constrained UE state, and unknown observation statistics, we develop a Riemannian manifold-based unscented Kalman filter (UKF) method. This method propagates statistics over nonlinear functions using generated sigma points and maintains state constraints through projection onto the defined manifold space. Additionally, by employing Fisher information matrices (FIMs) of the sigma points, a belief assignment principle is proposed to approximate the unknown observation covariance matrix, thereby ensuring accurate measurement updates in the UKF procedure. Numerical results demonstrate a substantial enhancement in tracking accuracy facilitated by RIS integration, despite urban signal reception challenges from LEO satellites. In addition, extensive simulations underscore the superior performance of the proposed tracking method and FIM-based belief assignment over the adopted benchmarks. Furthermore, the robustness of the proposed UKF is verified across various uncertainty levels.

GIR: 3D Gaussian Inverse Rendering for Relightable Scene Factorization

This paper presents a 3D Gaussian Inverse Rendering (GIR) method, employing 3D Gaussian representations to effectively factorize the scene into material properties, light, and geometry. The key contributions lie in three-fold. We compute the normal of each 3D Gaussian using the shortest eigenvector, with a directional masking scheme forcing accurate normal estimation without external supervision. We adopt an efficient voxel-based indirect illumination tracing scheme that stores direction-aware outgoing radiance in each 3D Gaussian to disentangle secondary illumination for approximating multi-bounce light transport. To further enhance the illumination disentanglement, we represent a high-resolution environmental map with a learnable low-resolution map and a lightweight, fully convolutional network. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in both relighting and novel view synthesis tasks among the recently proposed inverse rendering methods while achieving real-time rendering. This substantiates our proposed method's efficacy and broad applicability, highlighting its potential as an influential tool in various real-time interactive graphics applications such as material editing and relighting. The code will be released at https://github.com/guduxiaolang/GIR.

Unveiling the Multifaceted GRB 200613A: Prompt Emission Dynamics, Afterglow Evolution, and the Host Galaxy's Properties

We present our optical observations and multi-wavelength analysis of the GRB\,200613A detected by \texttt{Fermi} satellite. Time-resolved spectral analysis of the prompt $γ$-ray emission was conducted utilizing the Bayesian block method to determine statistically optimal time bins. Based on the Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), the data generally favor the Band+Blackbody (short as BB) model. We speculate that the main Band component comes from the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, while the additional BB component comes from the neutrino annihilation process. The BB component becomes significant for a low-spin, high-accretion rate black hole central engine, as evidenced by our model comparison with the data. The afterglow light curve exhibits typical power-law decay, and its behavior can be explained by the collision between the ejecta and constant interstellar medium (ISM). Model fitting yields the following parameters: $E_{K,iso} = (2.04^{+11.8}_{-1.50})\times 10^{53}$ erg, $Γ_0=354^{+578}_{-217}$, $p=2.09^{+0.02}_{-0.03}$, $n_{18}=(2.04^{+9.71}_{-1.87})\times 10^{2}$ cm$^{-3}$, $θ_j=24.0^{+6.50}_{-5.54}$ degree, $ε_e=1.66^{+4.09}_{-1.39})\times 10^{-1}$ and $ε_B=(7.76^{+48.5}_{-5.9})\times 10^{-6}$. In addition, we employed the public Python package \texttt{Prospector} perform a spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling of the host galaxy. The results suggest that the host galaxy is a massive galaxy ($\log(M_\ast / M_\odot)=11.75^{+0.10}_{-0.09}$) with moderate star formation rate ($\mbox{SFR}=22.58^{+13.63}_{-7.22} M_{\odot}$/yr). This SFR is consistent with the SFR of $\sim 34.2 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ derived from the [OII] emission line in the observed spectrum.

The Peculiar Precursor of a Gamma-Ray Burst from a Binary Merger Involving a Magnetar

The milestone discovery of GW 170817-GRB 170817A-AT 2017gfo has shown that gravitational wave (GW) could be produced during the merger of neutron star-neutron star/black hole and that in electromagnetic (EM) wave a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a kilonova (KN) are generated in sequence after the merger. Observationally, however, EM property before the merger phase is still unclear. Here we report a peculiar precursor in a KN-associated long-duration GRB 211211A, providing evidence of the EM before the merger. This precursor lasts $\sim$ 0.2 s, and the waiting time between the precursor and the main burst is $\sim$ 1 s, comparable to that between GW 170817 and GRB 170817A. The spectrum of the precursor could be well fit with a non-thermal cutoff power-law model instead of a blackbody. Especially, a $\sim$22 Hz Quasi-Periodic Oscillation candidate ($\sim 3σ$) is detected in the precursor. These temporal and spectral properties indicate that this precursor is probably produced by a catastrophic flare accompanying with magnetoelastic or crustal oscillations of a magnetar in binary compact merger. The strong magnetic field of the magnetar can also account for the prolonged duration of GRB 211211A. However, it poses a challenge to reconcile the rather short lifetime of a magnetar with the rather long spiraling time of a binary neutron star system only by the GW radiation before merger.

Actions Speak Louder than Words: Trillion-Parameter Sequential Transducers for Generative Recommendations

Large-scale recommendation systems are characterized by their reliance on high cardinality, heterogeneous features and the need to handle tens of billions of user actions on a daily basis. Despite being trained on huge volume of data with thousands of features, most Deep Learning Recommendation Models (DLRMs) in industry fail to scale with compute. Inspired by success achieved by Transformers in language and vision domains, we revisit fundamental design choices in recommendation systems. We reformulate recommendation problems as sequential transduction tasks within a generative modeling framework ("Generative Recommenders"), and propose a new architecture, HSTU, designed for high cardinality, non-stationary streaming recommendation data. HSTU outperforms baselines over synthetic and public datasets by up to 65.8% in NDCG, and is 5.3x to 15.2x faster than FlashAttention2-based Transformers on 8192 length sequences. HSTU-based Generative Recommenders, with 1.5 trillion parameters, improve metrics in online A/B tests by 12.4% and have been deployed on multiple surfaces of a large internet platform with billions of users. More importantly, the model quality of Generative Recommenders empirically scales as a power-law of training compute across three orders of magnitude, up to GPT-3/LLaMa-2 scale, which reduces carbon footprint needed for future model developments, and further paves the way for the first foundational models in recommendations.

An Integrating Comprehensive Trajectory Prediction with Risk Potential Field Method for Autonomous Driving

Due to the uncertainty of traffic participants' intentions, generating safe but not overly cautious behavior in interactive driving scenarios remains a formidable challenge for autonomous driving. In this paper, we address this issue by combining a deep learning-based trajectory prediction model with risk potential field-based motion planning. In order to comprehensively predict the possible future trajectories of other vehicles, we propose a target-region based trajectory prediction model(TRTP) which considers every region a vehicle may arrive in the future. After that, we construct a risk potential field at each future time step based on the prediction results of TRTP, and integrate risk value to the objective function of Model Predictive Contouring Control(MPCC). This enables the uncertainty of other vehicles to be taken into account during the planning process. Balancing between risk and progress along the reference path can achieve both driving safety and efficiency at the same time. We also demonstrate the security and effectiveness performance of our method in the CARLA simulator.

TexRO: Generating Delicate Textures of 3D Models by Recursive Optimization

This paper presents TexRO, a novel method for generating delicate textures of a known 3D mesh by optimizing its UV texture. The key contributions are two-fold. We propose an optimal viewpoint selection strategy, that finds the most miniature set of viewpoints covering all the faces of a mesh. Our viewpoint selection strategy guarantees the completeness of a generated result. We propose a recursive optimization pipeline that optimizes a UV texture at increasing resolutions, with an adaptive denoising method that re-uses existing textures for new texture generation. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate the superior performance of TexRO in terms of texture quality, detail preservation, visual consistency, and, notably runtime speed, outperforming other current methods. The broad applicability of TexRO is further confirmed through its successful use on diverse 3D models.

GVA: Reconstructing Vivid 3D Gaussian Avatars from Monocular Videos

In this paper, we present a novel method that facilitates the creation of vivid 3D Gaussian avatars from monocular video inputs (GVA). Our innovation lies in addressing the intricate challenges of delivering high-fidelity human body reconstructions and aligning 3D Gaussians with human skin surfaces accurately. The key contributions of this paper are twofold. Firstly, we introduce a pose refinement technique to improve hand and foot pose accuracy by aligning normal maps and silhouettes. Precise pose is crucial for correct shape and appearance reconstruction. Secondly, we address the problems of unbalanced aggregation and initialization bias that previously diminished the quality of 3D Gaussian avatars, through a novel surface-guided re-initialization method that ensures accurate alignment of 3D Gaussian points with avatar surfaces. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves high-fidelity and vivid 3D Gaussian avatar reconstruction. Extensive experimental analyses validate the performance qualitatively and quantitatively, demonstrating that it achieves state-of-the-art performance in photo-realistic novel view synthesis while offering fine-grained control over the human body and hand pose. Room-temperature intrinsic ferromagnetism of two-dimensional Na2Cl crystals originated by s- and p-orbitals

Ferromagnetism, as one of the most valuable properties of materials, has attracted sustained and widespread interest in basic and applied research from ancient compasses to modern electronic devices. Traditionally, intrinsic ferromagnetism has been attributed to the permanent magnetic moment induced by partially filled d- or f-orbitals. However, the development of ferromagnetic materials has been limited by this electronic structure convention. Thus, the identification of additional materials that are not constrained by this conventional rule but also exhibit intrinsic ferromagnetism is highly expected and may impact all the fields based on ferromagnetism. Here, we report the direct observation of room-temperature intrinsic ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) Na2Cl crystals, in which there are only partially filled s- and p-orbitals rather than d- or f-orbitals, using the superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) and magnetic force microscope (MFM). These Na2Cl crystals formed in reduced graphene oxide (rGO) membranes have an unconventional stoichiometric structure leading to unique electron and spin distributions. And the structure of these 2D Na2Cl crystals, including the Na and Cl sites, is characterized in situ for the first time and directly observed by cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) based on the observed difference in contrast between Na stacked with Cl and single Na. These findings break the conventional rule of intrinsic ferromagnetism and provide new insights into the design of novel magnetic and electronic devices and transistors with a size down to the atomic scale.

Tactile Active Inference Reinforcement Learning for Efficient Robotic Manipulation Skill Acquisition

Robotic manipulation holds the potential to replace humans in the execution of tedious or dangerous tasks. However, control-based approaches are not suitable due to the difficulty of formally describing open-world manipulation in reality, and the inefficiency of existing learning methods. Thus, applying manipulation in a wide range of scenarios presents significant challenges. In this study, we propose a novel method for skill learning in robotic manipulation called Tactile Active Inference Reinforcement Learning (Tactile-AIRL), aimed at achieving efficient training. To enhance the performance of reinforcement learning (RL), we introduce active inference, which integrates model-based techniques and intrinsic curiosity into the RL process. This integration improves the algorithm's training efficiency and adaptability to sparse rewards. Additionally, we utilize a vision-based tactile sensor to provide detailed perception for manipulation tasks. Finally, we employ a model-based approach to imagine and plan appropriate actions through free energy minimization. Simulation results demonstrate that our method achieves significantly high training efficiency in non-prehensile objects pushing tasks. It enables agents to excel in both dense and sparse reward tasks with just a few interaction episodes, surpassing the SAC baseline. Furthermore, we conduct physical experiments on a gripper screwing task using our method, which showcases the algorithm's rapid learning capability and its potential for practical applications.

Transport Barriers in Magnetized Plasmas -- General Theory with Dynamical Constraints

A fundamental dynamical constraint -- that fluctuation induced charge-weighted particle flux must vanish -- can prevent instabilities from accessing the free energy in the strong gradients characteristic of Transport Barriers (TBs). Density gradients, when larger than a certain threshold, lead to a violation of the constraint and emerge as a stabilizing force. This mechanism, then, broadens the class of configurations (in magnetized plasmas) where these high confinement states can be formed and sustained. The need for velocity shear, the conventional agent for TB formation, is obviated. The most important ramifications of the constraint is to permit a charting out of the domains conducive to TB formation and hence to optimally confined fusion worthy states; the detailed investigation is conducted through new analytic methods and extensive gyrokinetic simulations.

Attitude Determination in Urban Canyons: A Synergy between GNSS and 5G Observations

This paper considers the attitude determination problem based on the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and fifth-generation (5G) measurement fusion to address the shortcomings of standalone GNSS and 5G techniques in deep urban regions. The tight fusion of the GNSS and the 5G observations results in a unique hybrid integer- and orthonormality-constrained optimization problem. To solve this problem, we propose an estimation method consisting of the steps of float solution computation, ambiguity resolution, and fixed solution computation. Numerical results reveal that the proposed method can effectively improve the attitude determination accuracy and reliability compared to either the pure GNSS solution or the pure 5G solution.

Beamforming Design and Performance Evaluation for RIS-aided Localization using LEO Satellite Signals

The growing availability of low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, coupled with the anticipated widespread deployment of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), opens up promising prospects for new localization paradigms. This paper studies RIS-aided localization using LEO satellite signals. The Cramér-Rao bound of the considered localization problem is derived, based on which an optimal RIS beamforming design that minimizes the derived bound is proposed. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed beamforming scheme over benchmark alternatives, while also revealing that the synergy between LEO satellites and RISs holds the promise of achieving localization accuracy at the meter or even sub-meter level.
