Downlink and Uplink Cooperative Joint Communication and Sensing

Downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technologies have been individually studied for realizing sensing using DL and UL communication signals, respectively. Since the spatial environment and JCAS channels in the consecutive DL and UL JCAS time slots are generally unchanged, DL and UL JCAS may be jointly designed to achieve better sensing performance. In this paper, we propose a novel DL and UL cooperative (DUC) JCAS scheme, including a unified multiple signal classification (MUSIC)-based JCAS sensing scheme for both DL and UL JCAS and a DUC JCAS fusion method. The unified MUSIC JCAS sensing scheme can accurately estimate AoA, range, and Doppler based on a unified MUSIC-based sensing module. The DUC JCAS fusion method can distinguish between the sensing results of the communication user and other dumb targets. Moreover, by exploiting the channel reciprocity, it can also improve the sensing and channel state information (CSI) estimation accuracy. Extensive simulation results validate the proposed DUC JCAS scheme. It is shown that the minimum location and velocity estimation mean square errors of the proposed DUC JCAS scheme are about 20 dB lower than those of the state-of-the-art separated DL and UL JCAS schemes.

Sensing Performance of Cooperative Joint Sensing-Communication UAV Network

We propose a novel cooperative joint sensing-communication (JSC) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network that can achieve downward-looking detection and transmit detection data simultaneously using the same time and frequency resources by exploiting the beam sharing scheme. The UAV network consists of a UAV that works as a fusion center (FCUAV) and multiple subordinate UAVs (SU). All UAVs fly at the fixed height. FCUAV integrates the sensing data of network and carries out downward-looking detection. SUs carry out downward-looking detection and transmit the sensing data to FCUAV. To achieve the beam sharing scheme, each UAV is equipped with a novel JSC antenna array that is composed of both the sensing subarray (SenA) and the communication subarray (ComA) in order to generate the sensing beam (SenB) and the communication beam (ComB) for detection and communication, respectively. SenB and ComB of each UAV share a total amount of radio power. Because of the spatial orthogonality of communication and sensing, SenB and ComB can be easily formed orthogonally. The upper bound of average cooperative sensing area (UB-ACSA) is defined as the metric to measure the sensing performance, which is related to the mutual sensing interference and the communication capacity. Numerical simulations prove the validity of the theoretical expressions for UB-ACSA of the network. The optimal number of UAVs and the optimal SenB power are identified under the total power constraint.

Code-Division OFDM Joint Communication and Sensing System for 6G Machine-type Communication

The joint communication and sensing (JCS) system can provide higher spectrum efficiency and load-saving for 6G machine-type communication (MTC) applications by merging necessary communication and sensing abilities with unified spectrum and transceivers. In order to suppress the mutual interference between the communication and radar sensing signals to improve the communication reliability and radar sensing accuracy, we propose a novel code-division orthogonal frequency division multiplex (CD-OFDM) JCS MTC system, where MTC users can simultaneously and continuously conduct communication and sensing with each other. {\color{black} We propose a novel CD-OFDM JCS signal and corresponding successive-interference-cancellation (SIC) based signal processing technique that obtains code-division multiplex (CDM) gain, which is compatible with the prevalent orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) communication system.} To model the unified JCS signal transmission and reception process, we propose a novel unified JCS channel model. Finally, the simulation and numerical results are shown to verify the feasibility of the CD-OFDM JCS MTC system {\color{black} and the error propagation performance}. We show that the CD-OFDM JCS MTC system can achieve not only more reliable communication but also comparably robust radar sensing compared with the precedent OFDM JCS system, especially in low signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) regime.

Cross Aggregation Transformer for Image Restoration

Recently, Transformer architecture has been introduced into image restoration to replace convolution neural network (CNN) with surprising results. Considering the high computational complexity of Transformer with global attention, some methods use the local square window to limit the scope of self-attention. However, these methods lack direct interaction among different windows, which limits the establishment of long-range dependencies. To address the above issue, we propose a new image restoration model, Cross Aggregation Transformer (CAT). The core of our CAT is the Rectangle-Window Self-Attention (Rwin-SA), which utilizes horizontal and vertical rectangle window attention in different heads parallelly to expand the attention area and aggregate the features cross different windows. We also introduce the Axial-Shift operation for different window interactions. Furthermore, we propose the Locality Complementary Module to complement the self-attention mechanism, which incorporates the inductive bias of CNN (e.g., translation invariance and locality) into Transformer, enabling global-local coupling. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our CAT outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods on several image restoration applications. The code and models are available at https://github.com/zhengchen1999/CAT.

Roadmap towards Meta-being

Metaverse is a perpetual and persistent multi-user environment that merges physical reality with digital virtuality. It is widely considered to be the next revolution of the Internet. Digital humans are a critical part of Metaverse. They are driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and deployed in many applications. However, it is a complex process to construct digital humans which can be well combined with the Metaverse elements, such as immersion creation, connection construction, and economic operation. In this paper, we present the roadmap of Meta-being to construct the digital human in Metaverse. In this roadmap, we first need to model and render a digital human model for immersive display in Metaverse. Then we add a dialogue system with audio, facial expressions, and movements for this digital human. Finally, we can apply our digital human in the fields of the economy in Metaverse with the consideration of security. We also construct a digital human in Metaverse to implement our roadmap. Numerous advanced technologies and devices, such as AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and motion capture, are used in our implementation. This digital human can be applied to many applications, such as education and exhibition.

Amplitude-Varying Perturbation for Balancing Privacy and Utility in Federated Learning

While preserving the privacy of federated learning (FL), differential privacy (DP) inevitably degrades the utility (i.e., accuracy) of FL due to model perturbations caused by DP noise added to model updates. Existing studies have considered exclusively noise with persistent root-mean-square amplitude and overlooked an opportunity of adjusting the amplitudes to alleviate the adverse effects of the noise. This paper presents a new DP perturbation mechanism with a time-varying noise amplitude to protect the privacy of FL and retain the capability of adjusting the learning performance. Specifically, we propose a geometric series form for the noise amplitude and reveal analytically the dependence of the series on the number of global aggregations and the $(ε,δ)$-DP requirement. We derive an online refinement of the series to prevent FL from premature convergence resulting from excessive perturbation noise. Another important aspect is an upper bound developed for the loss function of a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) trained by FL running the new DP mechanism. Accordingly, the optimal number of global aggregations is obtained, balancing the learning and privacy. Extensive experiments are conducted using MLP, supporting vector machine, and convolutional neural network models on four public datasets. The contribution of the new DP mechanism to the convergence and accuracy of privacy-preserving FL is corroborated, compared to the state-of-the-art Gaussian noise mechanism with a persistent noise amplitude.

Deep Equilibrium Models for Video Snapshot Compressive Imaging

The ability of snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) systems to efficiently capture high-dimensional (HD) data has led to an inverse problem, which consists of recovering the HD signal from the compressed and noisy measurement. While reconstruction algorithms grow fast to solve it with the recent advances of deep learning, the fundamental issue of accurate and stable recovery remains. To this end, we propose deep equilibrium models (DEQ) for video SCI, fusing data-driven regularization and stable convergence in a theoretically sound manner. Each equilibrium model implicitly learns a nonexpansive operator and analytically computes the fixed point, thus enabling unlimited iterative steps and infinite network depth with only a constant memory requirement in training and testing. Specifically, we demonstrate how DEQ can be applied to two existing models for video SCI reconstruction: recurrent neural networks (RNN) and Plug-and-Play (PnP) algorithms. On a variety of datasets and real data, both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of our results demonstrate the effectiveness and stability of our proposed method. RIS-Assisted Jamming Rejection and Path Planning for UAV-Borne IoT Platform: A New Deep Reinforcement Learning Framework

This paper presents a new deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach to the trajectory planning and jamming rejection of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Jamming can prevent timely delivery of sensing data and reception of operation instructions. With the assistance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), we propose to augment the radio environment, suppress jamming signals, and enhance the desired signals. The UAV is designed to learn its trajectory and the RIS configuration based solely on changes in its received data rate, using the latest deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) and twin delayed DDPG (TD3) models. Simulations show that the proposed DRL algorithms give the UAV with strong resistance against jamming and that the TD3 algorithm exhibits faster and smoother convergence than the DDPG algorithm, and suits better for larger RISs. This DRL-based approach eliminates the need for knowledge of the channels involving the RIS and jammer, thereby offering significant practical value.

Accurate Image Restoration with Attention Retractable Transformer

Recently, Transformer-based image restoration networks have achieved promising improvements over convolutional neural networks due to parameter-independent global interactions. To lower computational cost, existing works generally limit self-attention computation within non-overlapping windows. However, each group of tokens are always from a dense area of the image. This is considered as a dense attention strategy since the interactions of tokens are restrained in dense regions. Obviously, this strategy could result in restricted receptive fields. To address this issue, we propose Attention Retractable Transformer (ART) for image restoration, which presents both dense and sparse attention modules in the network. The sparse attention module allows tokens from sparse areas to interact and thus provides a wider receptive field. Furthermore, the alternating application of dense and sparse attention modules greatly enhances representation ability of Transformer while providing retractable attention on the input image. We conduct extensive experiments on image super-resolution, denoising, and JPEG compression artifact reduction tasks. Experimental results validate that our proposed ART outperforms state-of-the-art methods on various benchmark datasets both quantitatively and visually. We also provide code and models at https://github.com/gladzhang/ART.

Universal Domain Adaptation for Remote Sensing Image Scene Classification

The domain adaptation (DA) approaches available to date are usually not well suited for practical DA scenarios of remote sensing image classification, since these methods (such as unsupervised DA) rely on rich prior knowledge about the relationship between label sets of source and target domains, and source data are often not accessible due to privacy or confidentiality issues. To this end, we propose a practical universal domain adaptation setting for remote sensing image scene classification that requires no prior knowledge on the label sets. Furthermore, a novel universal domain adaptation method without source data is proposed for cases when the source data is unavailable. The architecture of the model is divided into two parts: the source data generation stage and the model adaptation stage. The first stage estimates the conditional distribution of source data from the pre-trained model using the knowledge of class-separability in the source domain and then synthesizes the source data. With this synthetic source data in hand, it becomes a universal DA task to classify a target sample correctly if it belongs to any category in the source label set, or mark it as ``unknown" otherwise. In the second stage, a novel transferable weight that distinguishes the shared and private label sets in each domain promotes the adaptation in the automatically discovered shared label set and recognizes the ``unknown'' samples successfully. Empirical results show that the proposed model is effective and practical for remote sensing image scene classification, regardless of whether the source data is available or not. The code is available at https://github.com/zhu-xlab/UniDA.

Learning-based Intelligent Surface Configuration, User Selection, Channel Allocation, and Modulation Adaptation for Jamming-resisting Multiuser OFDMA Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can potentially combat jamming attacks by diffusing jamming signals. This paper jointly optimizes user selection, channel allocation, modulation-coding, and RIS configuration in a multiuser OFDMA system under a jamming attack. This problem is non-trivial and has never been addressed, because of its mixed-integer programming nature and difficulties in acquiring channel state information (CSI) involving the RIS and jammer. We propose a new deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based approach, which learns only through changes in the received data rates of the users to reject the jamming signals and maximize the sum rate of the system. The key idea is that we decouple the discrete selection of users, channels, and modulation-coding from the continuous RIS configuration, hence facilitating the RIS configuration with the latest twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient (TD3) model. Another important aspect is that we show a winner-takes-all strategy is almost surely optimal for selecting the users, channels, and modulation-coding, given a learned RIS configuration. Simulations show that the new approach converges fast to fulfill the benefit of the RIS, due to its substantially small state and action spaces. Without the need of the CSI, the approach is promising and offers practical value.

Large-scale Global Low-rank Optimization for Computational Compressed Imaging

Computational reconstruction plays a vital role in computer vision and computational photography. Most of the conventional optimization and deep learning techniques explore local information for reconstruction. Recently, nonlocal low-rank (NLR) reconstruction has achieved remarkable success in improving accuracy and generalization. However, the computational cost has inhibited NLR from seeking global structural similarity, which consequentially keeps it trapped in the tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency and prevents it from high-dimensional large-scale tasks. To address this challenge, we report here the global low-rank (GLR) optimization technique, realizing highly-efficient large-scale reconstruction with global self-similarity. Inspired by the self-attention mechanism in deep learning, GLR extracts exemplar image patches by feature detection instead of conventional uniform selection. This directly produces key patches using structural features to avoid burdensome computational redundancy. Further, it performs patch matching across the entire image via neural-based convolution, which produces the global similarity heat map in parallel, rather than conventional sequential block-wise matching. As such, GLR improves patch grouping efficiency by more than one order of magnitude. We experimentally demonstrate GLR's effectiveness on temporal, frequency, and spectral dimensions, including different computational imaging modalities of compressive temporal imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and multispectral filter array demosaicing. This work presents the superiority of inherent fusion of deep learning strategies and iterative optimization, and breaks the persistent dilemma of the tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency for various large-scale reconstruction tasks.

AdaVocoder: Adaptive Vocoder for Custom Voice

Custom voice is to construct a personal speech synthesis system by adapting the source speech synthesis model to the target model through the target few recordings. The solution to constructing a custom voice is to combine an adaptive acoustic model with a robust vocoder. However, training a robust vocoder usually requires a multi-speaker dataset, which should include various age groups and various timbres, so that the trained vocoder can be used for unseen speakers. Collecting such a multi-speaker dataset is difficult, and the dataset distribution always has a mismatch with the distribution of the target speaker dataset. This paper proposes an adaptive vocoder for custom voice from another novel perspective to solve the above problems. The adaptive vocoder mainly uses a cross-domain consistency loss to solve the overfitting problem encountered by the GAN-based neural vocoder in the transfer learning of few-shot scenes. We construct two adaptive vocoders, AdaMelGAN and AdaHiFi-GAN. First, We pre-train the source vocoder model on AISHELL3 and CSMSC datasets, respectively. Then, fine-tune it on the internal dataset VXI-children with few adaptation data. The empirical results show that a high-quality custom voice system can be built by combining a adaptive acoustic model with a adaptive vocoder.

Low-Resource Mongolian Speech Synthesis Based on Automatic Prosody Annotation

While deep learning-based text-to-speech (TTS) models such as VITS have shown excellent results, they typically require a sizable set of high-quality pairs to train, which is expensive to collect. So far, most languages in the world still lack the training data needed to develop TTS systems. This paper proposes two improvement methods for the two problems faced by low-resource Mongolian speech synthesis: a) In view of the lack of high-quality pairs of data, it is difficult to model the mapping problem from linguistic features to acoustic features. Improvements are made using pre-trained VITS model and transfer learning methods. b) In view of the problem of less labeled information, this paper proposes to use an automatic prosodic annotation method to label the prosodic information of text and corresponding speech, thereby improving the naturalness and intelligibility of low-resource Mongolian language. Through empirical research, the N-MOS of the method proposed in this paper is 4.195, and the I-MOS is 4.228.

Learning Visual Representation of Underwater Acoustic Imagery Using Transformer-Based Style Transfer Method

Underwater automatic target recognition (UATR) has been a challenging research topic in ocean engineering. Although deep learning brings opportunities for target recognition on land and in the air, underwater target recognition techniques based on deep learning have lagged due to sensor performance and the size of trainable data. This letter proposed a framework for learning the visual representation of underwater acoustic imageries, which takes a transformer-based style transfer model as the main body. It could replace the low-level texture features of optical images with the visual features of underwater acoustic imageries while preserving their raw high-level semantic content. The proposed framework could fully use the rich optical image dataset to generate a pseudo-acoustic image dataset and use it as the initial sample to train the underwater acoustic target recognition model. The experiments select the dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) as the underwater acoustic data source and also take fish, the most common marine creature, as the research subject. Experimental results show that the proposed method could generate high-quality and high-fidelity pseudo-acoustic samples, achieve the purpose of acoustic data enhancement and provide support for the underwater acoustic-optical images domain transfer research.

Concurrent Downlink and Uplink Joint Communication and Sensing for 6G Networks

Joint communication and sensing (JCAS) is a promising technology for 6th Generation (6G) mobile networks, such as intelligent vehicular networks, intelligent manufacturing, and so on. Equipped with two spatially separated antenna arrays, the base station (BS) can perform downlink active JCAS in a mono-static setup. This paper proposes a Concurrent Downlink and Uplink (CDU) JCAS system where the BS can use the echo of transmitted dedicated signals for sensing in the uplink timeslot, while performing reliable uplink communication. A novel successive interference cancellation-based CDU JCAS processing method is proposed to enable the estimation of uplink communication symbols and downlink sensing parameters. Extensive simulation results verify the feasibility of the CDU JCAS system, showing a performance improvement of more than 10 dB compared to traditional JCAS methods while maintaining reliable uplink communication.

Sensing-aided Uplink Channel Estimation for Joint Communication and Sensing

The joint communication and sensing (JCAS) technique has drawn great attention due to its high spectrum efficiency by using the same transmit signal for both communication and sensing. Exploiting the correlation between the uplink (UL) channel and the sensing results, we propose a sensing-aided Kalman filter (SAKF)-based channel state information (CSI) estimation method for UL JCAS, which exploits the angle-of-arrival (AoA) estimation to improve the CSI estimation accuracy. A Kalman filter (KF)-based CSI enhancement method is proposed to refine the least-square CSI estimation by exploiting the estimated AoA as the prior information. Simulation results show that the bit error rates (BER) of UL communication using the proposed SAKF-based CSI estimation method approach those using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) method, while at significantly reduced complexity.
