Correlated insulators, density wave states, and their nonlinear optical response in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

The correlated insulator (CI) states and the recently discovered density wave (DW) states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) have stimulated intense research interest. However, up to date, the nature of these "featureless" correlated states with zero Chern numbers are still elusive, and are lack of characteristic experimental signature. Thus, an experimental probe to identify the characters of these featureless CI and DW states are urgently needed. In this work, we theoretically study the correlated insulators and density-wave states at different integer and fractional fillings of the flat bands in magic-angle TBG based on extended unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations including the Coulomb screening effects from the remote bands. We further investigate the nonlinear optical response of the various correlated states, and find that the nonlinear optical conductivities can be used to identify the nature of these CI and DW states at most of the fillings. Therefore, we propose that nonlinear optical response can serve as a promising experimental probe to unveil the nature of the CI and DW states observed in magic-angle TBG.

On Efficient Transformer-Based Image Pre-training for Low-Level Vision

Pre-training has marked numerous state of the arts in high-level computer vision, while few attempts have ever been made to investigate how pre-training acts in image processing systems. In this paper, we tailor transformer-based pre-training regimes that boost various low-level tasks. To comprehensively diagnose the influence of pre-training, we design a whole set of principled evaluation tools that uncover its effects on internal representations. The observations demonstrate that pre-training plays strikingly different roles in low-level tasks. For example, pre-training introduces more local information to higher layers in super-resolution (SR), yielding significant performance gains, while pre-training hardly affects internal feature representations in denoising, resulting in limited gains. Further, we explore different methods of pre-training, revealing that multi-related-task pre-training is more effective and data-efficient than other alternatives. Finally, we extend our study to varying data scales and model sizes, as well as comparisons between transformers and CNNs-based architectures. Based on the study, we successfully develop state-of-the-art models for multiple low-level tasks. Code is released at https://github.com/fenglinglwb/EDT.

Growth, Electronic Structure and Superconductivity of Ultrathin Epitaxial CoSi2 Films

We report growth, electronic structure and superconductivity of ultrathin epitaxial CoSi2 films on Si(111). At low coverages, preferred islands with 2, 5 and 6 monolayers height develop, which agrees well with the surface energy calculation. We observe clear quantum well states as a result of electronic confinement and their dispersion agrees well with density functional theory calculations, indicating weak correlation effect despite strong contributions from Co 3d electrons. Ex-situ transport measurements show that superconductivity persists down to at least 10 monolayers, with reduced Tc but largely enhanced upper critical field. Our study opens up the opportunity to study the interplay between quantum confinement, interfacial symmetry breaking and superconductivity in an epitaxial silicide film, which is technologically relevant in microelectronics.

Strict Arakelov inequality for a family of varieties of general type

Let $f:\, X\to Y$ be a semistable non-isotrivial family of $n$-folds over a smooth projective curve with discriminant locus $S \subseteq Y$ and with general fibre $F$ of general type. We show the strict Arakelov inequality \[\frac{\mathrm{deg}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν}{\mathrm{rank}\, f_*ω_{X/Y}^ν} < {nν\over 2}\cdot\mathrm{deg}\,Ω^1_Y(\log S),\] for all $ν\in \mathbb N$ such that the $ν$-th pluricanonical linear system $|ω^ν_F|$ is birational. This answers a question asked by Möller, Viehweg and the third named author.

Local Sensing of Correlated Electrons in Dual-moiré Heterostructures using Dipolar Excitons

Moiré heterostructures are rapidly emerging as a tunable platform to study correlated electronic phenomena. Discovery of exotic quantum phases in moiré systems requires novel probes of charge and spin order. Unlike detection schemes which average over several moiré cells, local sensors can provide richer information with greater sensitivity. We study a WSe$_2$/MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterotrilayer which hosts excitons and electrons in distinct moiré lattices, and show that localized dipolar excitons are sensitive proximity charge sensors, uncovering numerous correlated electronic states at fractional fillings of the multi-orbital moiré lattice. In addition, the emission polarization can reveal the local electronic spin configuration at different fillings. Our results establish dipolar excitons as promising candidates to study emergent quantum matter and quantum magnetism in moiré crystals with higher spatial resolution.

Dynamic Binary Neural Network by learning channel-wise thresholds

Binary neural networks (BNNs) constrain weights and activations to +1 or -1 with limited storage and computational cost, which is hardware-friendly for portable devices. Recently, BNNs have achieved remarkable progress and been adopted into various fields. However, the performance of BNNs is sensitive to activation distribution. The existing BNNs utilized the Sign function with predefined or learned static thresholds to binarize activations. This process limits representation capacity of BNNs since different samples may adapt to unequal thresholds. To address this problem, we propose a dynamic BNN (DyBNN) incorporating dynamic learnable channel-wise thresholds of Sign function and shift parameters of PReLU. The method aggregates the global information into the hyper function and effectively increases the feature expression ability. The experimental results prove that our method is an effective and straightforward way to reduce information loss and enhance performance of BNNs. The DyBNN based on two backbones of ReActNet (MobileNetV1 and ResNet18) achieve 71.2% and 67.4% top1-accuracy on ImageNet dataset, outperforming baselines by a large margin (i.e., 1.8% and 1.5% respectively).

Full superconducting gap and type-I to type-II superconductivity transition in single crystalline NbGe2

We report a mechanical point-contact spectroscopy study on the single crystalline NbGe$_2$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T\rm_c$ = 2.0 - 2.1 K. The differential conductance curves at 0.3 K can be well fitted by a single gap s-wave Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model and the temperature dependent gap follows a standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer behavior, yielding $Δ_0 \sim$ 0.32 meV and 2$Δ_0$/$k\rm_{B}$$T\rm_{c}$ = 3.62 in the weak coupling limit. In magnetic field, the superconducting gap at 0.3 K keeps constant up to $H_{c1}\sim$150 Oe and gradually decreases until $H_{c2}\sim$350 Oe, indicating NbGe$_2$ going through a transition from type-I to type-II (possible type-II/1) superconductor at low temperature.

Strain-sensitive superconductivity in kagome metals KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ probed by point-contact spectroscopy

The kagome lattice is host to flat bands, topological electronic structures, Van Hove singularities and diverse electronic instabilities, providing an ideal platform for realizing highly tunable electronic states. Here, we report soft- and mechanical- point-contact spectroscopy (SPCS and MPCS) studies of the kagome superconductors KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Compared to the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ from specific heat measurements (2.8~K for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and 1.0~K for KV$_3$Sb$_5$), significantly enhanced values of $T_{\rm c}$ are observed via the zero-bias conductance of SPCS ($\sim$4.2~K for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and $\sim$1.8~K for KV$_3$Sb$_5$), which become further enhanced in MPCS measurements ($\sim$5.0~K for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and $\sim$3.1~K for KV$_3$Sb$_5$). While the differential conductance curves from SPCS are described by a two-gap $s$-wave model, a single $s$-wave gap reasonably captures the MPCS data, likely due to a diminishing spectral weight of the other gap. The enhanced superconductivity probably arises from local strain caused by the point-contact, which also leads to the evolution from two-gap to single-gap behaviors in different point-contacts. Our results demonstrate highly strain-sensitive superconductivity in kagome metals CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ and KV$_3$Sb$_5$, which may be harnessed in the manipulation of possible Majorana zero modes.

Erasable superconductivity in topological insulator Bi2Se3 induced by voltage pulse

Three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) attract much attention due to its topologically protected Dirac surface states. Doping into TIs or their proximity with normal superconductors can promote the realization of topological superconductivity(SC) and Majorana fermions with potential applications in quantum computations. Here, an emergent superconductivity was observed in local mesoscopic point-contacts on the topological insulator Bi2Se3 by applying a voltage pulse through the contacts, evidenced by the Andreev reflection peak in the point-contact spectra and a visible resistance drop in the four-probe electrical resistance measurements. More intriguingly, the superconductivity can be erased with thermal cycles by warming up to high temperatures (300 K) and induced again by the voltage pulse at the base temperature (1.9 K), suggesting a significance for designing new types of quantum devices. Nematic behaviour is also observed in the superconducting state, similar to the case of CuxBi2Se3 as topological superconductor candidates.

Interplay between charge order and superconductivity in the kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$

The kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$ hosts charge order, topologically nontrivial Dirac band crossings, and a superconducting ground state with unconventional characteristics, providing an ideal platform to investigate the interplay between different electronic states on the kagome lattice. Here we study the evolution of charge order and superconductivity in KV$_3$Sb$_5$ under hydrostatic pressure using electrical resistivity measurements. With the application of pressure, the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}=0.9$ K under ambient pressure quickly increases to 3.1 K at $p=0.4$ GPa, as charge order progressively weakens. Upon further increasing pressure, signatures of charge order disappears at $p_{\rm c1}\approx0.5$ GPa and $T_{\rm c}$ is gradually suppressed, forming a superconducting dome that terminates at $p\approx10$ GPa. Beyond $p\approx10$ GPa, a second superconducting dome emerges with maximum $T_{\rm c}\approx1.0$ K at $p_{\rm c2}\approx22$ GPa, which becomes fully suppressed at $p\approx28$ GPa. The suppression of superconductivity for the second superconducting dome is associated with the appearance of a unique high-pressure phase , possibly a distinct charge order.

Fast Camera Image Denoising on Mobile GPUs with Deep Learning, Mobile AI 2021 Challenge: Report

Image denoising is one of the most critical problems in mobile photo processing. While many solutions have been proposed for this task, they are usually working with synthetic data and are too computationally expensive to run on mobile devices. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based image denoising solution that can demonstrate high efficiency on smartphone GPUs. For this, the participants were provided with a novel large-scale dataset consisting of noisy-clean image pairs captured in the wild. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Samsung Exynos 2100 chipset with a powerful Mali GPU capable of accelerating floating-point and quantized neural networks. The proposed solutions are fully compatible with any mobile GPU and are capable of processing 480p resolution images under 40-80 ms while achieving high fidelity results. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Surface plasmonics of Weyl semimetals

Smooth interfaces of topological systems are known to host massive surface states along with the topologically protected chiral one. We show that in Weyl semimetals these massive states, along with the chiral Fermi arc, strongly alter the form of the Fermi-arc plasmon, Most saliently, they yield further collective plasmonic modes that are absent in a conventional interfaces. The plasmon modes are completely anisotropic as a consequence of the underlying anisotropy in the surface model and expected to have a clear-cut experimental signature, e.g. in electron-energy loss spectroscopy.

RefineMask: Towards High-Quality Instance Segmentation with Fine-Grained Features

The two-stage methods for instance segmentation, e.g. Mask R-CNN, have achieved excellent performance recently. However, the segmented masks are still very coarse due to the downsampling operations in both the feature pyramid and the instance-wise pooling process, especially for large objects. In this work, we propose a new method called RefineMask for high-quality instance segmentation of objects and scenes, which incorporates fine-grained features during the instance-wise segmenting process in a multi-stage manner. Through fusing more detailed information stage by stage, RefineMask is able to refine high-quality masks consistently. RefineMask succeeds in segmenting hard cases such as bent parts of objects that are over-smoothed by most previous methods and outputs accurate boundaries. Without bells and whistles, RefineMask yields significant gains of 2.6, 3.4, 3.8 AP over Mask R-CNN on COCO, LVIS, and Cityscapes benchmarks respectively at a small amount of additional computational cost. Furthermore, our single-model result outperforms the winner of the LVIS Challenge 2020 by 1.3 points on the LVIS test-dev set and establishes a new state-of-the-art. Code will be available at https://github.com/zhanggang001/RefineMask.

Equalization Loss v2: A New Gradient Balance Approach for Long-tailed Object Detection

Recently proposed decoupled training methods emerge as a dominant paradigm for long-tailed object detection. But they require an extra fine-tuning stage, and the disjointed optimization of representation and classifier might lead to suboptimal results. However, end-to-end training methods, like equalization loss (EQL), still perform worse than decoupled training methods. In this paper, we reveal the main issue in long-tailed object detection is the imbalanced gradients between positives and negatives, and find that EQL does not solve it well. To address the problem of imbalanced gradients, we introduce a new version of equalization loss, called equalization loss v2 (EQL v2), a novel gradient guided reweighing mechanism that re-balances the training process for each category independently and equally. Extensive experiments are performed on the challenging LVIS benchmark. EQL v2 outperforms origin EQL by about 4 points overall AP with 14-18 points improvements on the rare categories. More importantly, it also surpasses decoupled training methods. Without further tuning for the Open Images dataset, EQL v2 improves EQL by 7.3 points AP, showing strong generalization ability. Codes have been released at https://github.com/tztztztztz/eqlv2

Nodeless superconductivity in the kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered kagome metal series $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A$=K, Rb, Cs) exhibits topologically nontrivial band structures, chiral charge order and superconductivity, presenting a unique platform for realizing exotic electronic states. The nature of the superconducting state and the corresponding pairing symmetry are key questions that demand experimental clarification. Here, using a technique based on the tunneling diode oscillator, the magnetic penetration depth $Δλ(T)$ of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ was measured down to 0.07 K. A clear exponential behavior in $Δλ(T)$ with marked deviations from a $T$ or $T^2$ temperature dependence is observed at low temperatures, indicating a deficiency of nodal quasiparticles. Temperature dependence of the superfluid density and electronic specific heat can be described by two-gap $s$-wave superconductivity, consistent with the presence of multiple Fermi surfaces in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. These results evidence nodeless superconductivity in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ under ambient pressure, and constrain the allowed pairing symmetry.

A Transition-based Parser for Unscoped Episodic Logical Forms

"Episodic Logic:Unscoped Logical Form" (EL-ULF) is a semantic representation capturing predicate-argument structure as well as more challenging aspects of language within the Episodic Logic formalism. We present the first learned approach for parsing sentences into ULFs, using a growing set of annotated examples. The results provide a strong baseline for future improvement. Our method learns a sequence-to-sequence model for predicting the transition action sequence within a modified cache transition system. We evaluate the efficacy of type grammar-based constraints, a word-to-symbol lexicon, and transition system state features in this task. Our system is available at https://github.com/genelkim/ulf-transition-parser We also present the first official annotated ULF dataset at https://www.cs.rochester.edu/u/gkim21/ulf/resources/.

Temperature evolution of quasiparticle dispersion dynamics in semimetallic 1T-TiTe2 via high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy were used to study semimetallic 1T - TiTe2 quasiparticle dispersion and dynamics. A kink and a flat band, having the same energy scale and temperature-dependent behaviors along the G-M direction, were detected. Both manifested at low temperatures but blurred as temperature increased. The kink was formed by an electron-phonon coupling. And the localized flat band might be closely related to an electron-phonon coupling. Ultrafast optical spectroscopy identified multiple distinct time scales in the 10-300 K range. Quantitative analysis of the fastest decay process evidenced a significant lifetime temperature dependence at high temperatures, while this starts to change slowly below ~ 100 K where an anomalous Hall coefficient occurred. At low temperature, a coherent A1g phonon mode with a frequency of ~ 4.36 THz was extracted. Frequency temperature dependence suggests that phonon hardening occurs as temperature falls and anharmonic effects can explain it. Frequency fluence dependence indicates that the phonons soften as fluence increases.

Dirac quantum well engineering on the surface of topological insulator

We investigate a quantum well that consists of a thin topological insulator sandwiched between two trivial insulators. More specifically, we consider smooth interfaces between these different types of materials such that the interfaces host not only the chiral interface states, whose existence is dictated by the bulk-edge correspondence, but also massive Volkov-Pankratov states. We investigate possible hybridization between these interface states as a function of the width of the topological material and of the characteristic interface size. Most saliently, we find a strong qualitative difference between an extremely weak effect on the chiral interface states and a more common hybridization of the massive Volkov-Pankratov states that can be easily understood in terms of quantum tunneling in the framework of the model of a (Dirac) quantum well we introduce here.
