Spectral Graph Clustering for Intentional Islanding Operations in Resilient Hybrid Energy Systems

Establishing cleaner energy generation therefore improving the sustainability of the power system is a crucial task in this century, and one of the key strategies being pursued is to shift the dependence on fossil fuel to renewable technologies such as wind, solar, and nuclear. However, with the increasing number of heterogeneous components included, the complexity of the hybrid energy system becomes more significant. And the complex system imposes a more stringent requirement of the contingency plan to enhance the overall system resilience. Among different strategies to ensure a reliable system, intentional islanding is commonly applied in practical applications for power systems and attracts abundant interest in the literature. In this study, we propose a hierarchical spectral clustering-based intentional islanding strategy at the transmission level with renewable generations. To incorporate the renewable generation that relies on the inverter technology, the frequency measurements are considered to represent the transient response. And it has been further used as embedded information in the clustering algorithm along with other important electrical information from the system to enrich the modeling capability of the proposed framework. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the islanding strategy, the modified IEEE-9 bus and IEEE-118 bus systems coupled with wind farms are considered as the test cases.

Wavelet Knowledge Distillation: Towards Efficient Image-to-Image Translation

Remarkable achievements have been attained with Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in image-to-image translation. However, due to a tremendous amount of parameters, state-of-the-art GANs usually suffer from low efficiency and bulky memory usage. To tackle this challenge, firstly, this paper investigates GANs performance from a frequency perspective. The results show that GANs, especially small GANs lack the ability to generate high-quality high frequency information. To address this problem, we propose a novel knowledge distillation method referred to as wavelet knowledge distillation. Instead of directly distilling the generated images of teachers, wavelet knowledge distillation first decomposes the images into different frequency bands with discrete wavelet transformation and then only distills the high frequency bands. As a result, the student GAN can pay more attention to its learning on high frequency bands. Experiments demonstrate that our method leads to 7.08 times compression and 6.80 times acceleration on CycleGAN with almost no performance drop. Additionally, we have studied the relation between discriminators and generators which shows that the compression of discriminators can promote the performance of compressed generators.

The Waiting-Time Distribution for Network Partitions in Cascading Failures in Power Networks

Network redundancy is one of the spatial network structural properties critical to robustness against cascading failures in power networks. The waiting-time distributions for network partitions in cascading failures explain how the spatial network structures affect the cascading behaviors. Two waiting time events associated with the first and largest network partitions are studied for cascading failures under different network redundancies. With the synthetic power networks, the waiting-time distributions of network partitions can be systematically analyzed for various network redundancies. Waiting-time distributions shift to the right accordingly when network redundancies increase. Meanwhile, the sizes of the largest partitions decrease while the numbers of them increase statistically. The realistic power networks of France, Texas, and Poland also show the same trend for waiting-time distributions.

RestainNet: a self-supervised digital re-stainer for stain normalization

Color inconsistency is an inevitable challenge in computational pathology, which generally happens because of stain intensity variations or sections scanned by different scanners. It harms the pathological image analysis methods, especially the learning-based models. A series of approaches have been proposed for stain normalization. However, most of them are lack flexibility in practice. In this paper, we formulated stain normalization as a digital re-staining process and proposed a self-supervised learning model, which is called RestainNet. Our network is regarded as a digital restainer which learns how to re-stain an unstained (grayscale) image. Two digital stains, Hematoxylin (H) and Eosin (E) were extracted from the original image by Beer-Lambert's Law. We proposed a staining loss to maintain the correctness of stain intensity during the restaining process. Thanks to the self-supervised nature, paired training samples are no longer necessary, which demonstrates great flexibility in practical usage. Our RestainNet outperforms existing approaches and achieves state-of-the-art performance with regard to color correctness and structure preservation. We further conducted experiments on the segmentation and classification tasks and the proposed RestainNet achieved outstanding performance compared with SOTA methods. The self-supervised design allows the network to learn any staining style with no extra effort.

Reinforcement Learning for Selective Key Applications in Power Systems: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

With large-scale integration of renewable generation and distributed energy resources, modern power systems are confronted with new operational challenges, such as growing complexity, increasing uncertainty, and aggravating volatility. Meanwhile, more and more data are becoming available owing to the widespread deployment of smart meters, smart sensors, and upgraded communication networks. As a result, data-driven control techniques, especially reinforcement learning (RL), have attracted surging attention in recent years. This paper provides a comprehensive review of various RL techniques and how they can be applied to decision-making and control in power systems. In particular, we select three key applications, i.e., frequency regulation, voltage control, and energy management, as examples to illustrate RL-based models and solutions. We then present the critical issues in the application of RL, i.e., safety, robustness, scalability, and data. Several potential future directions are discussed as well.

Remaining Useful Life Prediction Using Temporal Deep Degradation Network for Complex Machinery with Attention-based Feature Extraction

The precise estimate of remaining useful life (RUL) is vital for the prognostic analysis and predictive maintenance that can significantly reduce failure rate and maintenance costs. The degradation-related features extracted from the sensor streaming data with neural networks can dramatically improve the accuracy of the RUL prediction. The Temporal deep degradation network (TDDN) model is proposed to make the RUL prediction with the degradation-related features given by the one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) feature extraction and attention mechanism. 1D CNN is used to extract the temporal features from the streaming sensor data. Temporal features have monotonic degradation trends from the fluctuating raw sensor streaming data. Attention mechanism can improve the RUL prediction performance by capturing the fault characteristics and the degradation development with the attention weights. The performance of the TDDN model is evaluated on the public C-MAPSS dataset and compared with the existing methods. The results show that the TDDN model can achieve the best RUL prediction accuracy in complex conditions compared to current machine learning models. The degradation-related features extracted from the high-dimension sensor streaming data demonstrate the clear degradation trajectories and degradation stages that enable TDDN to predict the turbofan-engine RUL accurately and efficiently.

CenGCN: Centralized Convolutional Networks with Vertex Imbalance for Scale-Free Graphs

Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) have achieved impressive performance in a wide variety of areas, attracting considerable attention. The core step of GCNs is the information-passing framework that considers all information from neighbors to the central vertex to be equally important. Such equal importance, however, is inadequate for scale-free networks, where hub vertices propagate more dominant information due to vertex imbalance. In this paper, we propose a novel centrality-based framework named CenGCN to address the inequality of information. This framework first quantifies the similarity between hub vertices and their neighbors by label propagation with hub vertices. Based on this similarity and centrality indices, the framework transforms the graph by increasing or decreasing the weights of edges connecting hub vertices and adding self-connections to vertices. In each non-output layer of the GCN, this framework uses a hub attention mechanism to assign new weights to connected non-hub vertices based on their common information with hub vertices. We present two variants CenGCN\_D and CenGCN\_E, based on degree centrality and eigenvector centrality, respectively. We also conduct comprehensive experiments, including vertex classification, link prediction, vertex clustering, and network visualization. The results demonstrate that the two variants significantly outperform state-of-the-art baselines.

Fast Transient Stability Prediction Using Grid-informed Temporal and Topological Embedding Deep Neural Network

Transient stability prediction is critically essential to the fast online assessment and maintaining the stable operation in power systems. The wide deployment of phasor measurement units (PMUs) promotes the development of data-driven approaches for transient stability assessment. This paper proposes the temporal and topological embedding deep neural network (TTEDNN) model to forecast transient stability with the early transient dynamics. The TTEDNN model can accurately and efficiently predict the transient stability by extracting the temporal and topological features from the time-series data of the early transient dynamics. The grid-informed adjacency matrix is used to incorporate the power grid structural and electrical parameter information. The transient dynamics simulation environments under the single-node and multiple-node perturbations are used to test the performance of the TTEDNN model for the IEEE 39-bus and IEEE 118-bus power systems. The results show that the TTEDNN model has the best and most robust prediction performance. Furthermore, the TTEDNN model also demonstrates the transfer capability to predict the transient stability in the more complicated transient dynamics simulation environments.

GPS: A Policy-driven Sampling Approach for Graph Representation Learning

Graph representation learning has drawn increasing attention in recent years, especially for learning the low dimensional embedding at both node and graph level for classification and recommendations tasks. To enable learning the representation on the large-scale graph data in the real world, numerous research has focused on developing different sampling strategies to facilitate the training process. Herein, we propose an adaptive Graph Policy-driven Sampling model (GPS), where the influence of each node in the local neighborhood is realized through the adaptive correlation calculation. Specifically, the selections of the neighbors are guided by an adaptive policy algorithm, contributing directly to the message aggregation, node embedding updating, and graph level readout steps. We then conduct comprehensive experiments against baseline methods on graph classification tasks from various perspectives. Our proposed model outperforms the existing ones by 3%-8% on several vital benchmarks, achieving state-of-the-art performance in real-world datasets.

The trigger and data acquisition system of the FASER experiment

The FASER experiment is a new small and inexpensive experiment that is placed 480 meters downstream of the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. FASER is designed to capture decays of new long-lived particles, produced outside of the ATLAS detector acceptance. These rare particles can decay in the FASER detector together with about 500-1000 Hz of other particles originating from the ATLAS interaction point. A very high efficiency trigger and data acquisition system is required to ensure that the physics events of interest will be recorded. This paper describes the trigger and data acquisition system of the FASER experiment and presents performance results of the system acquired during initial commissioning.

Direct reconstruction of tissue conductivity with deconvolution in magneto-acousto-electrical tomography (MAET): theory and numerical simulation

Magneto-acousto-electrical tomography (MAET), a combination of ultrasound imaging and electrical impedance tomography (EIT), offers both high resolution (in comparison to EIT) and high contrast (in comparison to ultrasound imaging). It is used to map the internal conductivity distribution of an imaging object. However, conductivity reconstruction in MAET is a challenge, so conventional MAET is mainly devoted to mapping the conductivity interface. This is primarily because integration byparts is used in the theory derivation, and the simplified measurement formula suggests the voltage is proportional to the conductivity gradient, which leads to an error in the measurement formula. In this study, the measurement signal is expressed as the convolution of acoustic velocity and conductivity distribution without using integration by parts, which retains the low-frequency term in the measurement signal. Based on the convolution formula, we subsequently propose a direct conductivity reconstruction scheme with deconvolution by utilizing the low-frequency component. We verify the proposed method based on two two-dimension models and quantify the L2 errors of reconstructed conductivity. Besides, we analyze factors influencing the reconstructed accuracy such as reconstructed regularization parameter ultrasound frequency, and noise. We also demonstrate that the spatial resolution is not influenced by the duration of excitation ultrasound. With the contributions of the proposed method, conductivity imaging appears to be feasible for application to the early diagnosis in the future.

Self-supervised Tumor Segmentation through Layer Decomposition

In this paper, we target self-supervised representation learning for zero-shot tumor segmentation. We make the following contributions: First, we advocate a zero-shot setting, where models from pre-training should be directly applicable for the downstream task, without using any manual annotations. Second, we take inspiration from "layer-decomposition", and innovate on the training regime with simulated tumor data. Third, we conduct extensive ablation studies to analyse the critical components in data simulation, and validate the necessity of different proxy tasks. We demonstrate that, with sufficient texture randomization in simulation, model trained on synthetic data can effortlessly generalise to segment real tumor data. Forth, our approach achieves superior results for zero-shot tumor segmentation on different downstream datasets, BraTS2018 for brain tumor segmentation and LiTS2017 for liver tumor segmentation. While evaluating the model transferability for tumor segmentation under a low-annotation regime, the proposed approach also outperforms all existing self-supervised approaches, opening up the usage of self-supervised learning in practical scenarios.

Configuring Intelligent Reflecting Surface with Performance Guarantees: Optimal Beamforming

This work proposes linear time strategies to optimally configure the phase shifts for the reflective elements of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). Specifically, we show that the binary phase beamforming can be optimally solved in linear time to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For the general K-ary phase beamforming, we develop a linear time approximation algorithm that guarantees performance within a constant fraction (1+\cos(π/K))/2 of the global optimum, e.g., it can attain over 85% of the optimal performance for the quadrature beamforming with K=4. According to the numerical results, the proposed approximation algorithm for discrete IRS beamforming outperforms the existing algorithms significantly in boosting the received SNR.

Unraveling complex magnetism in two-dimensional FeS$_2$

Atomically thin two dimensional magnets have given rise to emergent phenomena due to magnetic exchange and spin-orbit coupling showing a great promise for realizing ultrathin device structures. In this paper, we critically examine the magnetic properties of 2D FeS$_2$, which has been recently claimed to exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism in the (111) orientation. Our ab initio study based on collinear density functional theory has revealed the ground state as an antiferromagnetic one with an ordering temperature of around 100K along with a signature of spin-phonon coupling, which may trigger a ferromagnetic coupling via strain. Moreover, our calculations based on spin-spirals indicate the possibility of non-collinear magnetic structures, which is also supported by Monte Carlo simulations based on ab initio magnetic exchange parameters. This opens up an excellent possibility to manipulate magnetic structures by the application of directional strain.

First neutrino interaction candidates at the LHC

FASER$ν$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is designed to directly detect collider neutrinos for the first time and study their cross sections at TeV energies, where no such measurements currently exist. In 2018, a pilot detector employing emulsion films was installed in the far-forward region of ATLAS, 480 m from the interaction point, and collected 12.2 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. We describe the analysis of this pilot run data and the observation of the first neutrino interaction candidates at the LHC. This milestone paves the way for high-energy neutrino measurements at current and future colliders.

Object SLAM-Based Active Mapping and Robotic Grasping

This paper presents the first active object mapping framework for complex robotic manipulation and autonomous perception tasks. The framework is built on an object SLAM system integrated with a simultaneous multi-object pose estimation process that is optimized for robotic grasping. Aiming to reduce the observation uncertainty on target objects and increase their pose estimation accuracy, we also design an object-driven exploration strategy to guide the object mapping process, enabling autonomous mapping and high-level perception. Combining the mapping module and the exploration strategy, an accurate object map that is compatible with robotic grasping can be generated. Additionally, quantitative evaluations also indicate that the proposed framework has a very high mapping accuracy. Experiments with manipulation (including object grasping and placement) and augmented reality significantly demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed framework.
