Network Architecture Design toward Convergence of Mobile Applications and Networks

With the quick proliferation of extended reality (XR) services, the mobile communications networks are faced with gigantic challenges to meet the diversified and challenging service requirements. A tight coordination or even convergence of applications and mobile networks is highly motivated. In this paper, a multi-domain (e.g. application layer, transport layer, the core network, radio access network, user equipment) coordination scheme is first proposed, which facilitates a tight coordination between applications and networks based on the current 5G networks. Toward the convergence of applications and networks, a network architectures with cross-domain joint processing capability is further proposed for 6G mobile communications and beyond. Both designs are able to provide more accurate information of the quality of experience (QoE) and quality of service (QoS), thus paving the path for the joint optimization of applications and networks. The benefits of the QoE assisted scheduling are further investigated via simulations. A new QoE-oriented fairness metric is further proposed, which is capable of ensuring better fairness when different services are scheduled. Future research directions and their standardization impacts are also identified. Toward optimized end-to-end service provision, the paradigm shift from loosely coupled to converged design of applications and wireless communication networks is indispensable.

Multi-task Learning-based CSI Feedback Design in Multiple Scenarios

For frequency division duplex systems, the essential downlink channel state information (CSI) feedback includes the links of compression, feedback, decompression and reconstruction to reduce the feedback overhead. One efficient CSI feedback method is the Auto-Encoder (AE) structure based on deep learning, yet facing problems in actual deployments, such as selecting the deployment mode when deploying in a cell with multiple complex scenarios. Rather than designing an AE network with huge complexity to deal with CSI of all scenarios, a more realistic mode is to divide the CSI dataset by region/scenario and use multiple relatively simple AE networks to handle subregions' CSI. However, both require high memory capacity for user equipment (UE) and are not suitable for low-level devices. In this paper, we propose a new user-friendly-designed framework based on the latter multi-tasking mode. Via Multi-Task Learning, our framework, Single-encoder-to-Multiple-decoders (S-to-M), designs the multiple independent AEs into a joint architecture: a shared encoder corresponds to multiple task-specific decoders. We also complete our framework with GateNet as a classifier to enable the base station autonomously select the right task-specific decoder corresponding to the subregion. Experiments on the simulating multi-scenario CSI dataset demonstrate our proposed S-to-M's advantages over the other benchmark modes, i.e., significantly reducing the model complexity and the UE's memory consumption

Compact Lattice Gadget and Its Applications to Hash-and-Sign Signatures

This work aims to improve the practicality of gadget-based cryptosystems, with a focus on hash-and-sign signatures. To this end, we develop a compact gadget framework in which the used gadget is a square matrix instead of the short and fat one used in previous constructions. To work with this compact gadget, we devise a specialized gadget sampler, called semi-random sampler, to compute the approximate preimage. It first deterministically computes the error and then randomly samples the preimage. We show that for uniformly random targets, the preimage and error distributions are simulatable without knowing the trapdoor. This ensures the security of the signature applications. Compared to the Gaussian-distributed errors in previous algorithms, the deterministic errors have a smaller size, which lead to a substantial gain in security and enables a practically working instantiation. As the applications, we present two practically efficient gadget-based signature schemes based on NTRU and Ring-LWE respectively. The NTRU-based scheme offers comparable efficiency to Falcon and Mitaka and a simple implementation without the need of generating the NTRU trapdoor. The LWE-based scheme also achieves a desirable overall performance. It not only greatly outperforms the state-of-the-art LWE-based hash-and-sign signatures, but also has an even smaller size than the LWE-based Fiat-Shamir signature scheme Dilithium. These results fill the long-term gap in practical gadget-based signatures.

Energy-based Out-of-distribution Detection

Determining whether inputs are out-of-distribution (OOD) is an essential building block for safely deploying machine learning models in the open world. However, previous methods relying on the softmax confidence score suffer from overconfident posterior distributions for OOD data. We propose a unified framework for OOD detection that uses an energy score. We show that energy scores better distinguish in- and out-of-distribution samples than the traditional approach using the softmax scores. Unlike softmax confidence scores, energy scores are theoretically aligned with the probability density of the inputs and are less susceptible to the overconfidence issue. Within this framework, energy can be flexibly used as a scoring function for any pre-trained neural classifier as well as a trainable cost function to shape the energy surface explicitly for OOD detection. On a CIFAR-10 pre-trained WideResNet, using the energy score reduces the average FPR (at TPR 95%) by 18.03% compared to the softmax confidence score. With energy-based training, our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on common benchmarks.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Attack Graph Convolutional Networks by Adding Fake Nodes

In this paper, we study the robustness of graph convolutional networks (GCNs). Previous work have shown that GCNs are vulnerable to adversarial perturbation on adjacency or feature matrices of existing nodes; however, such attacks are usually unrealistic in real applications. For instance, in social network applications, the attacker will need to hack into either the client or server to change existing links or features. In this paper, we propose a new type of "fake node attacks" to attack GCNs by adding malicious fake nodes. This is much more realistic than previous attacks; in social network applications, the attacker only needs to register a set of fake accounts and link to existing ones. To conduct fake node attacks, a greedy algorithm is proposed to generate edges of malicious nodes and their corresponding features aiming to minimize the classification accuracy on the target nodes. In addition, we introduce a discriminator to classify malicious nodes from real nodes, and propose a Greedy-GAN attack to simultaneously update the discriminator and the attacker, to make malicious nodes indistinguishable from the real ones. Our non-targeted attack decreases the accuracy of GCN down to 0.03, and our targeted attack reaches a success rate of 78% on a group of 100 nodes, and 90% on average for attacking a single target node.

GraphDefense: Towards Robust Graph Convolutional Networks

In this paper, we study the robustness of graph convolutional networks (GCNs). Despite the good performance of GCNs on graph semi-supervised learning tasks, previous works have shown that the original GCNs are very unstable to adversarial perturbations. In particular, we can observe a severe performance degradation by slightly changing the graph adjacency matrix or the features of a few nodes, making it unsuitable for security-critical applications. Inspired by the previous works on adversarial defense for deep neural networks, and especially adversarial training algorithm, we propose a method called GraphDefense to defend against the adversarial perturbations. In addition, for our defense method, we could still maintain semi-supervised learning settings, without a large label rate. We also show that adversarial training in features is equivalent to adversarial training for edges with a small perturbation. Our experiments show that the proposed defense methods successfully increase the robustness of Graph Convolutional Networks. Furthermore, we show that with careful design, our proposed algorithm can scale to large graphs, such as Reddit dataset.

More or Less? Predict the Social Influence of Malicious URLs on Social Media

Users of Online Social Networks (OSNs) interact with each other more than ever. In the context of a public discussion group, people receive, read, and write comments in response to articles and postings. In the absence of access control mechanisms, OSNs are a great environment for attackers to influence others, from spreading phishing URLs, to posting fake news. Moreover, OSN user behavior can be predicted by social science concepts which include conformity and the bandwagon effect. In this paper, we show how social recommendation systems affect the occurrence of malicious URLs on Facebook. We exploit temporal features to build a prediction framework, having greater than 75% accuracy, to predict whether the following group users' behavior will increase or not. Included in this work, we demarcate classes of URLs, including those malicious URLs classified as creating critical damage, as well as those of a lesser nature which only inflict light damage such as aggressive commercial advertisements and spam content. It is our hope that the data and analyses in this paper provide a better understanding of OSN user reactions to different categories of malicious URLs, thereby providing a way to mitigate the influence of these malicious URL attacks.

Attacking Strategies and Temporal Analysis Involving Facebook Discussion Groups

Online social network (OSN) discussion groups are exerting significant effects on political dialogue. In the absence of access control mechanisms, any user can contribute to any OSN thread. Individuals can exploit this characteristic to execute targeted attacks, which increases the potential for subsequent malicious behaviors such as phishing and malware distribution. These kinds of actions will also disrupt bridges among the media, politicians, and their constituencies. For the concern of Security Management, blending malicious cyberattacks with online social interactions has introduced a brand new challenge. In this paper we describe our proposal for a novel approach to studying and understanding the strategies that attackers use to spread malicious URLs across Facebook discussion groups. We define and analyze problems tied to predicting the potential for attacks focused on threads created by news media organizations. We use a mix of macro static features and the micro dynamic evolution of posts and threads to identify likely targets with greater than 90% accuracy. One of our secondary goals is to make such predictions within a short (10 minute) time frame. It is our hope that the data and analyses presented in this paper will support a better understanding of attacker strategies and footprints, thereby developing new system management methodologies in handing cyber attacks on social networks.

Multiple Accounts Detection on Facebook Using Semi-Supervised Learning on Graphs

In social networks, a single user may create multiple accounts to spread his / her opinions and to influence others, by actively comment on different news pages. It would be beneficial to both social networks and their communities, to demote such abnormal activities, and the first step is to detect those accounts. However, the detection is challenging, because these accounts may have very realistic names and reasonable activity patterns. In this paper, we investigate three different approaches, and propose using graph embedding together with semi-supervised learning, to predict whether a pair of accounts are created by the same user. We carry out extensive experimental analyses to understand how changes in the input data and algorithmic parameters / optimization affect the prediction performance. We also discover that local information have higher importance than the global ones for such prediction, and point out the threshold leading to the best results. We test the proposed approach with 6700 Facebook pages from the Middle East, and achieve the averaged accuracy at 0.996 and AUC (area under curve) at 0.952 for users with the same name; with the U.S. 2016 election dataset, we obtain the best AUC at 0.877 for users with different names.

Elastic metamaterial with simultaneously negative Mass Density, Bulk Modulus and Shear Modulus

We present a study of elastic metamaterial that possesses multiple local resonances. We demonstrated that the elastic metamaterial can have simultaneously three negative effective parameters, i.e., negative effective mass, effective bulk modulus and effective shear modulus at a certain frequency range. Through the analysis of the resonant field, it has been elucidated that the three negative parameters are induced by dipolar, monopolar and quadrupolar resonance respectively. The dipolar and monopolar resonances result into the negative band for longitudinal waves, while the dipolar and quadrupolar resonances cause the negative band for transverse waves. The two bands have an overlapping frequency regime. A simultaneously negative refraction for both longitudinal waves and transverse waves has been demonstrated in the system.

The study of $U$-boson from $π^{0}$-meson decays at HIAF energy

Within the frame of LDM (light dark matter)-model, the LDM exchange particle $U$-boson (with mass 10-100 MeV) can be produced from many meson decay process so it attracts a lot of attention. Considering the merit of searching the $U$-boson from $π^{0}$ decay, the momentum spectra of light spin-1 vector $U$-boson from decay channel $π^{0}\rightarrow γU$ and the energy spectra of positron decay from $U\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ at beam energy of 5-10 GeV are first presented by using a relativistic transport (ART) model. Moreover, the feasibility and rationality of searching the $U$-boson in the experiment at HIAF energy are discussed, which will be an important promotion to understand and ultimately detect the $U$-boson, both in theory and experiment.
