Gate-Tunable Critical Current of the Three-Dimensional Niobium Nano-Bridge Josephson Junction

Recent studies have shown that the critical currents of several metallic superconducting nanowires and Dayem bridges can be locally tuned using a gate voltage {V_g}. Here, we report a gate-tunable Josephson junction structure constructed from a three-dimensional (3D) niobium nano-bridge junction (NBJ) with a voltage gate on top. Measurements up to 6 K showed that the critical current of this structure can be tuned to zero by increasing {V_g}. The critical gate voltage Vgc was reduced to 16 V and may possibly be reduced further by reducing the thickness of the insulation layer between the gate and the NBJ. Furthermore, the flux modulation generated by Josephson interference of two parallel 3D NBJs can also be tuned using {V_g} in a similar manner. Therefore, we believe that this gate-tunable Josephson junction structure is promising for superconducting circuit fabrication at high integration levels.

Geometric Scaling of the Current-Phase Relation of Niobium Nano-Bridge Junctions

The nano-bridge junction (NBJ) is a type of Josephson junction that is advantageous for the miniaturization of superconducting circuits. However, the current-phase relation (CPR) of the NBJ usually deviates from a sinusoidal function which has been explained by a simplified model with correlation only to its effective length. Here, we investigated both measured and calculated CPRs of niobium NBJs of a cuboidal shape with a three-dimensional bank structure. From a sine-wave to a saw-tooth-like form, we showed that deviated CPRs of NBJs can be described quantitatively by its skewness Δθ. Furthermore, the measured dependency of Δθ on the critical current {I_0} from 108 NBJs turned out to be consistent with the calculated ones derived from the change in geometric dimensions. It suggested that the CPRs of NBJs can be tuned by their geometric dimensions. In addition, the calculated scaling behavior of Δθ versus {I_0} in three-dimensional space was provided for the future design of superconducting circuits of a high integration level by using niobium NBJs.

CLIPSonic: Text-to-Audio Synthesis with Unlabeled Videos and Pretrained Language-Vision Models

Recent work has studied text-to-audio synthesis using large amounts of paired text-audio data. However, audio recordings with high-quality text annotations can be difficult to acquire. In this work, we approach text-to-audio synthesis using unlabeled videos and pretrained language-vision models. We propose to learn the desired text-audio correspondence by leveraging the visual modality as a bridge. We train a conditional diffusion model to generate the audio track of a video, given a video frame encoded by a pretrained contrastive language-image pretraining (CLIP) model. At test time, we first explore performing a zero-shot modality transfer and condition the diffusion model with a CLIP-encoded text query. However, we observe a noticeable performance drop with respect to image queries. To close this gap, we further adopt a pretrained diffusion prior model to generate a CLIP image embedding given a CLIP text embedding. Our results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, and that the pretrained diffusion prior can reduce the modality transfer gap. While we focus on text-to-audio synthesis, the proposed model can also generate audio from image queries, and it shows competitive performance against a state-of-the-art image-to-audio synthesis model in a subjective listening test. This study offers a new direction of approaching text-to-audio synthesis that leverages the naturally-occurring audio-visual correspondence in videos and the power of pretrained language-vision models.

Superconducting nanowire diode

Semiconducting diode with nonreciprocal transport effect underlies the cornerstone of contemporary integrated circuits (ICs) technology. Due to isotropic superconducting properties and the lack of breaking of inversion symmetry for conventional s-wave superconductors, such a superconducting peer is absent. Recently, a series of superconducting structures, including superconducting superlattice and quantum-material-based superconducting Josephson junction, have exhibited a superconducting diode effect in terms of polarity-dependent critical current. However, due to complex structures, these composite systems are not able to construct large-scale integrated superconducting circuits. Here, we demonstrated the minimal superconducting electric component-superconducting nanowire-based diode with a nonreciprocal transport effect under a perpendicular magnetic field, in which the superconducting to normal metallic phase transition relies on the polarity and amplitude of the bias current. Our nanowire diodes can be reliably operated nearly at all temperatures below the critical temperature, and the rectification efficiency at 2 K can be more than 24%. Moreover, the superconducting nanowire diode is able to rectify both square wave and sine wave signals without any distortion. Combining the superconducting nanowire-based diodes and transistors, superconducting nanowires hold the possibility to construct novel low-dissipation superconducting ICs.

Dynamically Conservative Self-Driving Planner for Long-Tail Cases

Self-driving vehicles (SDVs) are becoming reality but still suffer from "long-tail" challenges during natural driving: the SDVs will continually encounter rare, safety-critical cases that may not be included in the dataset they were trained. Some safety-assurance planners solve this problem by being conservative in all possible cases, which may significantly affect driving mobility. To this end, this work proposes a method to automatically adjust the conservative level according to each case's "long-tail" rate, named dynamically conservative planner (DCP). We first define the "long-tail" rate as an SDV's confidence to pass a driving case. The rate indicates the probability of safe-critical events and is estimated using the statistics bootstrapped method with historical data. Then, a reinforcement learning-based planner is designed to contain candidate policies with different conservative levels. The final policy is optimized based on the estimated "long-tail" rate. In this way, the DCP is designed to automatically adjust to be more conservative in low-confidence "long-tail" cases while keeping efficient otherwise. The DCP is evaluated in the CARLA simulator using driving cases with "long-tail" distributed training data. The results show that the DCP can accurately estimate the "long-tail" rate to identify potential risks. Based on the rate, the DCP automatically avoids potential collisions in "long-tail" cases using conservative decisions while not affecting the average velocity in other typical cases. Thus, the DCP is safer and more efficient than the baselines with fixed conservative levels, e.g., an always conservative planner. This work provides a technique to guarantee SDV's performance in unexpected driving cases without resorting to a global conservative setting, which contributes to solving the "long-tail" problem practically.

Signatures of Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall States in Twisted MoTe2 Bilayer

The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and topology can result in exotic quantum states of matter. A celebrated example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, which exhibits an integer quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field thanks to its intrinsic ferromagnetism. In the presence of strong electron-electron interactions, exotic fractional-QAH (FQAH) states at zero magnetic field can emerge. These states could host fractional excitations, including non-Abelian anyons - crucial building blocks for topological quantum computation. Flat Chern bands are widely considered as a desirable venue to realize the FQAH state. For this purpose, twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers in rhombohedral stacking have recently been predicted to be a promising material platform. Here, we report experimental signatures of FQAH states in 3.7-degree twisted MoTe2 bilayer. Magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal robust ferromagnetic states at fractionally hole filled moiré minibands. Using trion photoluminescence as a sensor, we obtain a Landau fan diagram which shows linear shifts in carrier densities corresponding to the v=-2/3 and -3/5 ferromagnetic states with applied magnetic field. These shifts match the Streda formula dispersion of FQAH states with fractionally quantized Hall conductance of -2/3$e^2/h$ and -3/5$e^2/h$, respectively. Moreover, the v=-1 state exhibits a dispersion corresponding to Chern number -1, consistent with the predicted QAH state. In comparison, several non-ferromagnetic states on the electron doping side do not disperse, i.e., are trivial correlated insulators. The observed topological states can be further electrically driven into topologically trivial states. Our findings provide clear evidence of the long-sought FQAH states, putting forward MoTe2 moiré superlattices as a fascinating platform for exploring fractional excitations.

Thin film aluminum nitride surface acoustic wave resonators for quantum acoustodynamics

The quantum excitations of macroscopic surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have been tailored to control, communicate and transduce stationary and flying quantum states. However, the limited lifetime of this hybrid quantum systems remains critical obstacles to extend their applications in quantum information processing. Here we present the potentials of thin film aluminum nitride to on-chip integrate phonons with superconducting qubits over previous bulk piezoelectric substrates. We have reported high-quality thin film GHz-SAW resonators with the highest internal quality factor Qi of 5 e4 at the single-phonon level. The internal loss of SAW resonators are systematically investigated with tuning the parameters of sample layout, power and temperature. Our results manifest that SAWs on piezoelectric films are readily integrable with standard fabrication of Josephson junction quantum circuits, and offer excellent acoustic platforms for the high-coherence quantum acoustodynamics architectures.

Spatially Adaptive Self-Supervised Learning for Real-World Image Denoising

Significant progress has been made in self-supervised image denoising (SSID) in the recent few years. However, most methods focus on dealing with spatially independent noise, and they have little practicality on real-world sRGB images with spatially correlated noise. Although pixel-shuffle downsampling has been suggested for breaking the noise correlation, it breaks the original information of images, which limits the denoising performance. In this paper, we propose a novel perspective to solve this problem, i.e., seeking for spatially adaptive supervision for real-world sRGB image denoising. Specifically, we take into account the respective characteristics of flat and textured regions in noisy images, and construct supervisions for them separately. For flat areas, the supervision can be safely derived from non-adjacent pixels, which are much far from the current pixel for excluding the influence of the noise-correlated ones. And we extend the blind-spot network to a blind-neighborhood network (BNN) for providing supervision on flat areas. For textured regions, the supervision has to be closely related to the content of adjacent pixels. And we present a locally aware network (LAN) to meet the requirement, while LAN itself is selectively supervised with the output of BNN. Combining these two supervisions, a denoising network (e.g., U-Net) can be well-trained. Extensive experiments show that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art SSID methods on real-world sRGB photographs. CAT: Causal Audio Transformer for Audio Classification

The attention-based Transformers have been increasingly applied to audio classification because of their global receptive field and ability to handle long-term dependency. However, the existing frameworks which are mainly extended from the Vision Transformers are not perfectly compatible with audio signals. In this paper, we introduce a Causal Audio Transformer (CAT) consisting of a Multi-Resolution Multi-Feature (MRMF) feature extraction with an acoustic attention block for more optimized audio modeling. In addition, we propose a causal module that alleviates over-fitting, helps with knowledge transfer, and improves interpretability. CAT obtains higher or comparable state-of-the-art classification performance on ESC50, AudioSet and UrbanSound8K datasets, and can be easily generalized to other Transformer-based models.

Towards more precise automatic analysis: a comprehensive survey of deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation

Accurate segmentation of multiple organs of the head, neck, chest, and abdomen from medical images is an essential step in computer-aided diagnosis, surgical navigation, and radiation therapy. In the past few years, with a data-driven feature extraction approach and end-to-end training, automatic deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation method has far outperformed traditional methods and become a new research topic. This review systematically summarizes the latest research in this field. For the first time, from the perspective of full and imperfect annotation, we comprehensively compile 161 studies on deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation in multiple regions such as the head and neck, chest, and abdomen, containing a total of 214 related references. The method based on full annotation summarizes the existing methods from four aspects: network architecture, network dimension, network dedicated modules, and network loss function. The method based on imperfect annotation summarizes the existing methods from two aspects: weak annotation-based methods and semi annotation-based methods. We also summarize frequently used datasets for multi-organ segmentation and discuss new challenges and new research trends in this field.

Origin of $π$-shifted three-dimensional charge density waves in kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$

Understanding the nature of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=Cs,Rb,K) is a recent subject of intensive study. Due to the presence of van Hove singularities, electron-electron interaction has been suggested to play an important role in the formation of such broken symmetry states. Recent experiments show that the CDW order is three-dimensional and it is staggered across different kagome layers. However, the experimental interpretation for the precise structure of CDW varies in terms of whether it is the star of David (SD), inverse star of David (ISD) or the alternation of the two among neighboring layers. In this work, we show that the origin of these distinct CDW orders can be understood in a unified picture by considering intra- and inter-layer electron-electron interactions as well as the coupling between electrons and lattice distortions. Utilizing an effective 9-band model with V $d$ orbitals and out-of-plane Sb $p$ orbitals, it is demonstrated that the repulsive electron-electron interaction favors charge bond order which induces either SD or ISD upon including lattice distortions. As the inter-layer interaction is introduced, $π$-shifted CDW develops with the staggered ordering along the $c$-axis. We also find that the phase with alternating SD and ISD can be stabilized as the ground state under strong inter-layer interaction.

Non-Kitaev vs. Kitaev Honeycomb Cobaltates

Recently, honeycomb cobaltates with 3$d^7$ were proposed to display Kitaev physics despite weak spin-orbit coupling. However, other theoretical and experimental works found leading XXZ Heisenberg and negligible Kitaev interactions in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), which calls for a further study to clarify the origin of the discrepancies. Here we derive the analytical expressions of the spin model using strong-coupling perturbation theory. With tight binding parameters obtained by {\it ab-initio} calculations for idealized honeycomb BCAO, we find that the largest intraorbital $t_{2g}-t_{2g}$ exchange path, which was assumed to be small in the earlier theory proposal, leads to a ferromagnetic (FM) Heisenberg interaction. This becomes the dominant interaction, as other $t_{2g}-e_g$ and $e_g-e_g$ contributions almost cancel each other. Exactly the same assumed-to-be-small channel also generates an antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction, which then cancels a FM Kitaev interaction from $t_{2g}-e_g$ paths, resulting in a small Kitaev interaction. Under the trigonal distortion, the preeminent isotropic Heisenberg becomes an anisotropic XXZ model as expected, which is the case for BCAO. However, in Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ the intraorbital $t_{2g}-t_{2g}$ hopping is smaller and comparable to the $t_{2g}-e_g$ hopping, leading to a delicate competition between enhanced Kitaev and reduced Heisenberg interactions.

Single photon detection performance of highly disordered NbTiN thin films

We experimentally investigated the detection performance of highly disordered NbxTi1-xN based superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs). The dependence on the composition of the transition temperature Tc for NbxTi1-xN films show a dome-like behavior on the Nb content, with a maximal Tc at xNb~0.65 , and the Nb0.65Ti0.35N films also combine relatively large sheet resistance and intermediate residual resistivity ratio. Moreover, 60-nm-wide and 7-nm-thick Nb0.65Ti0.35N nanowires show a switching current as high as 14.5 uA, and saturated intrinsic detection efficiency with a plateau of more than 2 uA at 2.4 K. Finally, the corresponding SNSPDs on an alternative SiO2/Ta2O5 dielectric mirror showed a system detection efficiency of approximately 92% for 1550 nm photons, and the timing jitter is around 26 ps. Our results demonstrate that the highly disordered NbxTi1-xN films are promising for fabricating SNSPDs for near- and middle-infrared single photons with high detection efficiency and low timing jitter.

Quantitative Evidence on Overlooked Aspects of Enrollment Speaker Embeddings for Target Speaker Separation

Single channel target speaker separation (TSS) aims at extracting a speaker's voice from a mixture of multiple talkers given an enrollment utterance of that speaker. A typical deep learning TSS framework consists of an upstream model that obtains enrollment speaker embeddings and a downstream model that performs the separation conditioned on the embeddings. In this paper, we look into several important but overlooked aspects of the enrollment embeddings, including the suitability of the widely used speaker identification embeddings, the introduction of the log-mel filterbank and self-supervised embeddings, and the embeddings' cross-dataset generalization capability. Our results show that the speaker identification embeddings could lose relevant information due to a sub-optimal metric, training objective, or common pre-processing. In contrast, both the filterbank and the self-supervised embeddings preserve the integrity of the speaker information, but the former consistently outperforms the latter in a cross-dataset evaluation. The competitive separation and generalization performance of the previously overlooked filterbank embedding is consistent across our study, which calls for future research on better upstream features.

Reversed Image Signal Processing and RAW Reconstruction. AIM 2022 Challenge Report

Cameras capture sensor RAW images and transform them into pleasant RGB images, suitable for the human eyes, using their integrated Image Signal Processor (ISP). Numerous low-level vision tasks operate in the RAW domain (e.g. image denoising, white balance) due to its linear relationship with the scene irradiance, wide-range of information at 12bits, and sensor designs. Despite this, RAW image datasets are scarce and more expensive to collect than the already large and public RGB datasets. This paper introduces the AIM 2022 Challenge on Reversed Image Signal Processing and RAW Reconstruction. We aim to recover raw sensor images from the corresponding RGBs without metadata and, by doing this, "reverse" the ISP transformation. The proposed methods and benchmark establish the state-of-the-art for this low-level vision inverse problem, and generating realistic raw sensor readings can potentially benefit other tasks such as denoising and super-resolution.

Towards Label-efficient Automatic Diagnosis and Analysis: A Comprehensive Survey of Advanced Deep Learning-based Weakly-supervised, Semi-supervised and Self-supervised Techniques in Histopathological Image Analysis

Histopathological images contain abundant phenotypic information and pathological patterns, which are the gold standards for disease diagnosis and essential for the prediction of patient prognosis and treatment outcome. In recent years, computer-automated analysis techniques for histopathological images have been urgently required in clinical practice, and deep learning methods represented by convolutional neural networks have gradually become the mainstream in the field of digital pathology. However, obtaining large numbers of fine-grained annotated data in this field is a very expensive and difficult task, which hinders the further development of traditional supervised algorithms based on large numbers of annotated data. More recent studies have started to liberate from the traditional supervised paradigm, and the most representative ones are the studies on weakly supervised learning paradigm based on weak annotation, semi-supervised learning paradigm based on limited annotation, and self-supervised learning paradigm based on pathological image representation learning. These new methods have led a new wave of automatic pathological image diagnosis and analysis targeted at annotation efficiency. With a survey of over 130 papers, we present a comprehensive and systematic review of the latest studies on weakly supervised learning, semi-supervised learning, and self-supervised learning in the field of computational pathology from both technical and methodological perspectives. Finally, we present the key challenges and future trends for these techniques.

Theoretical analysis of single-ion anisotropy in $d^3$ Mott insulators

An effective spin model for Mott insulators is determined by the symmetries involved among magnetic sites, electron fillings, and their interactions. Such a spin Hamiltonian offers insight to mechanisms of magnetic orders and magnetic anisotropy beyond the Heisenberg model. For a spin moment S bigger than 1/2, single-ion anisotropy is in principle allowed. However, for $d^3$ Mott insulators with large cubic crystal field splitting, the single-ion anisotropy is absent within the LS coupling, despite S = 3/2 local moment. On the other hand, preferred magnetic moment directions in $d^3$ materials have been reported, which calls for a further theoretical investigation. Here we derive the single-ion anisotropy interaction using the strong-coupling perturbation theory. The cubic crystal field splitting including $e_g$ orbitals, trigonal distortions, Hund's coupling, and spin-orbit coupling beyond the LS scheme are taken into account. For compressed distortion, the spin-orbit coupling at magnetic sites can favor either the easy-axis or the easy-plane while that of anions leads to easy-axis anisotropy. We apply the theory on $\rm{CrX}_3$ with X = Cl and I, and show the dependence of the single-ion anisotropy on the strength of the spin-orbit couplings of both magnetic and anion sites. Significance of the single-ion anisotropy in ideal two-dimensional magnets is also discussed.

Long-Tail Prediction Uncertainty Aware Trajectory Planning for Self-driving Vehicles

A typical trajectory planner of autonomous driving commonly relies on predicting the future behavior of surrounding obstacles. Recently, deep learning technology has been widely adopted to design prediction models due to their impressive performance. However, such models may fail in the "long-tail" driving cases where the training data is sparse or unavailable, leading to planner failures. To this end, this work proposes a trajectory planner to consider the prediction model uncertainty arising from insufficient data for safer performance. Firstly, an ensemble network structure estimates the prediction model's uncertainty due to insufficient training data. Then a trajectory planner is designed to consider the worst-case arising from prediction uncertainty. The results show that the proposed method can improve the safety of trajectory planning under the prediction uncertainty caused by insufficient data. At the same time, with sufficient data, the framework will not lead to overly conservative results. This technology helps to improve the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles under the long-tail data distribution of the real world.
