Stochastic fractional diffusion equations with Gaussian noise rough in space

In this article, we consider the following stochastic fractional diffusion equation \begin{equation*} \left(\partial^β+\dfracν{2}\left(-Δ\right)^{α/ 2}\right) u(t, x)= λ\: I_{0_+}^γ\left[u(t, x) \dot{W}(t, x)\right] ,\quad t>0,\: x \in \mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} where $α>0$, $β\in(0,2]$, $γ\ge 0$, $λ\neq0$, $ν>0$, and $\dot{W}$ is a Gaussian noise which is white or fractional in time and rough in space. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution in the Itô-Skorohod sense and obtain the lower and upper bounds for the $p$-th moment. The Hölder regularity of the solution is also studied.

Ultrafast photothermoelectric effect in Dirac semimetallic Cd3As2 revealed by terahertz emission

The thermoelectric effects of topological semimetals have attracted tremendous research interest because many topological semimetals are excellent thermoelectric materials and thermoelectricity serves as one of their most important potential applications. In this work, we reveal the transient photothermoelectric response of Dirac semimetallic Cd3As2, namely the photo-Seebeck effect and photo-Nernst effect, by studying the terahertz (THz) emission from the transient photocurrent induced by these effects. Our excitation polarization and power dependence confirm that the observed THz emission is due to photothermoelectric effect instead of other nonlinear optical effect. Furthermore, when a weak magnetic field (~0.4 T) is applied, the response clearly indicates an order of magnitude enhancement on transient photothermoelectric current generation compared to the photo-Seebeck effect. Such enhancement supports an ambipolar transport nature of the photo-Nernst current generation in Cd3As2. These results highlight the enhancement of thermoelectric performance can be achieved in topological Dirac semimetals based on the Nernst effect, and our transient studies pave the way for thermoelectric devices applicable for high field circumstance when nonequilibrium state matters. The large THz emission due to highly efficient photothermoelectric conversion is comparable to conventional semiconductors through optical rectification and photo-Dember effect.

Direct Light Orbital Angular Momentum Detection in Mid-Infrared based on Type-II Weyl Semimetal TaIrTe4

The capability of direct photocurrent detection of orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light has recently been realized with topological Weyl semimetal, but limited to near infrared wavelength range. The extension of direct OAM detection to midinfrared, a wavelength range that plays important role in a vast range of applications, such as autonomous driving, night vision and motion detection, is challenging and has not yet been realized. This is because most studies of photocurrent responses are not sensitive to the phase information and the photo response is usually very poor in the mid-infrared. In this study, we designed a photodetector based on Type-II Weyl semimetal tantalum iridium tellurides with designed electrode geometries for direct detection of the topological charge of OAM through orbital photogalvanic effect. Our results indicate helical phase gradient of light can be distinguished by a current winding around the optical beam axis with a magnitude proportional to its quantized OAM mode number. The topological enhanced response at mid-infrared of TaIrTe4 further help overcome the low responsivity issues and finally render the direct orbital angular momentum detection capability in mid-infrared. Our study enables on-chip integrated OAM detection, and thus OAM sensitive focal plane arrays in mid-infrared. Such capability triggers new route to explore applications of light carrying OAM, especially that it can crucially promote the performance of many mid-infrared imaging related applications, such as intricate target recognition and night vision.

Spatial averages for the Parabolic Anderson model driven by rough noise

In this paper, we study spatial averages for the parabolic Anderson model in the Skorohod sense driven by rough Gaussian noise, which is colored in space and time. We include the case of a fractional noise with Hurst parameters $H_0$ in time and $H_1$ in space, satisfying $H_0 \in (1/2,1)$, $H_1\in (0,1/2)$ and $H_0 + H_1 > 3/4$. Our main result is a functional central limit theorem for the spatial averages. As an important ingredient of our analysis, we present a Feynman-Kac formula that is new for these values of the Hurst parameters.

Large deviation principles for stochastic dynamical systems with a fractional Brownian noise

We study small noise large deviation asymptotics for stochastic differential equations with a multiplicative noise given as a fractional Brownian motion $B^H$ with Hurst parameter $H>\frac12$. The solutions of the stochastic differential equations are defined pathwise under appropriate conditions on the coefficients. The ingredients in the proof of the large deviation principle, which include a variational representation for nonnegative functionals of fractional Brownian motions and a general sufficient condition for a LDP for a collection of functionals of a fractional Brownian motions, have a broader applicability than the model considered here.

Large deviations for functionals of some self-similar Gaussian processes

We prove large deviation principles for $\int_0^t γ(X_s)ds$, where $X$ is a $d$-dimensional self-similar Gaussian process and $γ(x)$ takes the form of the Dirac delta function $δ(x)$, $|x|^{-β}$ with $β\in (0,d)$, or $\prod_{i=1}^d |x_i|^{-β_i}$ with $β_i\in(0,1)$. In particular, large deviations are obtained for the functionals of $d$-dimensional fractional Brownian motion, sub-fractional Brownian motion and bi-fractional Brownian motion. As an application, the critical exponential integrability of the functionals is discussed.

Fractional stochastic wave equation driven by a Gaussian noise rough in space

In this article, we consider fractional stochastic wave equations on $\mathbb R$ driven by a multiplicative Gaussian noise which is white/colored in time and has the covariance of a fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(\frac14, \frac12)$ in space. We prove the existence and uniqueness of the mild Skorohod solution, establish lower and upper bounds for the $p$-th moment of the solution for all $p\ge2$, and obtain the Hölder continuity in time and space variables for the solution.

Probability density of lognormal fractional SABR model

Instantaneous volatility of logarithmic return in the lognormal fractional SABR model is driven by the exponentiation of a correlated fractional Brownian motion. Due to the mixed nature of driving Brownian and fractional Brownian motions, probability density for such a model is less studied in the literature. We show in this paper a bridge representation for the joint density of the lognormal fractional SABR model in a Fourier space. Evaluating the bridge representation along a properly chosen deterministic path yields a small time asymptotic expansion to the leading order for the probability density of the fractional SABR model. A direct generalization of the representation to joint density at multiple times leads to a heuristic derivation of the large deviations principle for the joint density in small time. Approximation of implied volatility is readily obtained by applying the Laplace asymptotic formula to the call or put prices and comparing coefficients.

Nonlinear Feynman-Kac formulae for SPDEs with space-time noise

We study a class of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs) involving martingales with spatial parameters, and show that they provide probabilistic interpretations (Feynman-Kac formulae) for certain semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with space-time noise. As an application of the Feynman-Kac formulae, random periodic solutions and stationary solutions to certain SPDEs are obtained.

An implicit numerical scheme for a class of backward doubly stochastic differential equations

In this paper, we consider a class of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDE for short) with general terminal value and general random generator. Those BDSDEs do not involve any forward diffusion processes. By using the techniques of Malliavin calculus, we are able to establish the $L^p$-Hölder continuity of the solution pair. Then, an implicit numerical scheme for the BDSDE is proposed and the rate of convergence is obtained in the $L^p$-sense. As a by-product, we obtain an explicit representation of the process $Y$ in the solution pair to a linear BDSDE with random coefficients.

Bridge representation and modal-path approximation

The article shows a bridge representation for the joint density of a system of stochastic processes consisting of a Brownian motion with drift coupled with a correlated fractional Brownian motion with drift. As a result, a small time approximation of the joint density is readily obtained by substituting the conditional expectation under the bridge measure by a single path: the modal-path from the initial point to the terminal point.

Temporal asymptotics for fractional parabolic Anderson model

In this paper, we consider fractional parabolic equation of the form $ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t}=-(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}u+u\dot W(t,x)$, where $-(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ with $α\in(0,2]$ is a fractional Laplacian and $\dot W$ is a Gaussian noise colored in space and time. The precise moment Lyapunov exponents for the Stratonovich solution and the Skorohod solution are obtained by using a variational inequality and a Feynman-Kac type large deviation result for space-time Hamiltonians driven by $α$-stable process. As a byproduct, we obtain the critical values for $θ$ and $η$ such that $\mathbb{E}\exp\left(θ\left(\int_0^1 \int_0^1 |r-s|^{-β_0}γ(X_r-X_s)drds\right)^η\right)$ is finite, where $X$ is $d$-dimensional symmetric $α$-stable process and $γ(x)$ is $|x|^{-β}$ or $\prod_{j=1}^d|x_j|^{-β_j}$.

Admission Control for Multidimensional Workload with Heavy Tails and Fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Process

The infinite source Poisson arrival model with heavy-tailed workload distributions has attracted much attention, especially in the modeling of data packet traffic in communication networks. In particular, it is well known that under suitable assumptions on the source arrival rate, the centered and scaled cumulative workload process for the underlying processing system can be approximated by fractional Brownian motion. In many applications one is interested in the stabilization of the work inflow to the system by modifying the net input rate, using an appropriate admission control policy. In this work we study a natural family of admission control policies which keep the associated scaled cumulative workload asymptotically close to a pre-specified linear trajectory, uniformly over time. Under such admission control policies and with natural assumptions on arrival distributions, suitably scaled and centered cumulative workload processes are shown to converge weakly in the path space to the solution of a $d$-dimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by a Gaussian process. It is shown that the admission control policy achieves moment stabilization in that the second moment of the solution to the SDE (averaged over the $d$-stations) is bounded uniformly for all times. In one special case of control policies, as time approaches infinity, we obtain a fractional version of a stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process that is driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>1/2$.

Malliavin calculus for backward stochastic differential equations and application to numerical solutions

In this paper we study backward stochastic differential equations with general terminal value and general random generator. In particular, we do not require the terminal value be given by a forward diffusion equation. The randomness of the generator does not need to be from a forward equation, either. Motivated from applications to numerical simulations, first we obtain the $L^p$-Hölder continuity of the solution. Then we construct several numerical approximation schemes for backward stochastic differential equations and obtain the rate of convergence of the schemes based on the obtained $L^p$-Hölder continuity results. The main tool is the Malliavin calculus.

A singular stochastic differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion

In this paper we study a singular stochastic differential equation driven by an additive fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H>\frac 12$. Under some assumptions on the drift, we show that there is a unique solution, which has moments of all orders. We also apply the techniques of Malliavin calculus to prove that the solution has an absolutely continuous law at any time $t>0$.
