Product Ranking for Revenue Maximization with Multiple Purchases

Product ranking is the core problem for revenue-maximizing online retailers. To design proper product ranking algorithms, various consumer choice models are proposed to characterize the consumers' behaviors when they are provided with a list of products. However, existing works assume that each consumer purchases at most one product or will keep viewing the product list after purchasing a product, which does not agree with the common practice in real scenarios. In this paper, we assume that each consumer can purchase multiple products at will. To model consumers' willingness to view and purchase, we set a random attention span and purchase budget, which determines the maximal amount of products that he/she views and purchases, respectively. Under this setting, we first design an optimal ranking policy when the online retailer can precisely model consumers' behaviors. Based on the policy, we further develop the Multiple-Purchase-with-Budget UCB (MPB-UCB) algorithms with $Õ(\sqrt{T})$ regret that estimate consumers' behaviors and maximize revenue simultaneously in online settings. Experiments on both synthetic and semi-synthetic datasets prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

A revisit of superconductivity in 4$H_b$-TaS$_{2-2x}$Se$_{2x}$ single crystals

Previous investigations of 4$H_b$-TaS$_{2-2x}$Se$_{2x}$ mainly focused on the direct competition between superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW). However, the superconductivity itself, although has been prominently enhanced by isovalent Se substitution, has not been adequately investigated. Here, we performed a detailed electrical transport measurement down to 0.1 K on a series of 4$H_b$-TaS$_{2-2x}$Se$_{2x}$ single crystals. A systematic fitting of the temperature-dependent resistance demonstrates that the decreased Debye temperatures ($Θ_{D}$) and higher electron-phonon coupling constants ($λ_{e-p}$) at the optimal Se doping content raise the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$). Additionally, we discovered that the incorporation of Se diminishes the degree of anisotropy of the superconductivity in the highly layered structure. More prominently, a comprehensive analysis of the vortex liquid phase region reveals that the optimally doped sample deviates from the canonical 2D Tinkham prediction but favors a linear trend with the variation of the external magnetic field. These findings emphasize the importance of interlayer interaction in this segregated superconducting-Mott-insulating system.

Interweaving Polar Charge Orders in a Layered Metallic Super-atomic Crystal

Electronic properties of super-atomic crystals have not been sufficiently explored due to the versatility of their building units; moreover, their inter-unit couplings are even poorly understood. Here, we present a joint experiment-theory investigation of a rational-designed layered super-atomic crystal of Au6Te12Se8 cubes, stacked by non-covalent inter-cube quasi-bonds. We found a sequential-emerged anisotropic triple-cube charge-density-wave (tc-CDW) and polarized metallic states below 120 K, as revealed via scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, transport measurement, Raman spectra, and density functional theory. The polarized states are locked in an anti-parallel configuration, which is required for maintaining the inversion symmetry of the center-cube in the tc-CDW. The anti-polar metallic states are thus interweaved by the charge-density-wave and the polarized metallic states, and primarily ascribed to electronic effects via theoretical calculations. This work not only demonstrates a microscopic picture of the interweaved CDW and polarized charge orders in the super-atomic crystal of ATS, but also sheds light on expanding the existing category of quantum materials to non-covalent solids.

Lattice-aligned gallium oxynitride nanolayer for GaN surface enhancement and function extension

Gallium nitride (GaN), as a promising alternative semiconductor to silicon, is of well-established use in photoelectronic and electronic technology. However, the vulnerable GaN surface has been a critical restriction that hinders the development of GaN-based devices, especially regarding device stability and reliability. Here, we overcome this challenge by converting the GaN surface into a gallium oxynitride (GaON) epitaxial nanolayer through an in-situ two-step "oxidation-reconfiguration" process. The oxygen plasma treatment overcomes the chemical inertness of the GaN surface, and the sequential thermal annealing manipulates the kinetic-thermodynamic reaction pathways to create a metastable GaON nanolayer with wurtzite lattice. This GaN-derived GaON nanolayer is a tailored structure for surface reinforcement and possesses several advantages, including wide bandgap, high thermodynamic stability, and large valence band offset with GaN substrate. These enhanced physical properties can be further leveraged to enable GaN-based applications in new scenarios, such as complementary logic integrated circuits, photoelectrochemical water splitting, and ultraviolet photoelectric conversion, making GaON a versatile functionality extender.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in charge-density-wave compound LaTe2-xSbx (x=0 and 0.4)

Here, we have grown single crystals of LaTe2-xSbx (x=0 and 0.4) with continuously adjustable CDW. High-pressure x-ray diffraction show LaTe2 does not undergo phase transition and keep robust below 40 GPa. In-situ high-pressure electrical measurements show LaTe2-xSbx undergo semiconductor-metal-superconductivity transition at 4.6 and 2.5 GPa, respectively. With the doping of Sb, the highest Tc increases from 4.6 to 6.5 K. Theoretical calculations reveal that the CDW has been completely suppressed and the calculated Tc is about 2.97 K at 4.5 GPa, consistent with the measured value. Then, the pressure-induced superconductivity in LaTe2-xSbx can be explained in the framework of the BCS theory.

High entropy van der Waals materials (Review article)

By breaking the restrictions on traditional alloying strategy, the high entropy concept has promoted the exploration of the central area of phase space, thus broadening the horizon of alloy exploitation. This review highlights the marriage of the high entropy concept and van der Waals systems to form a new family of materials category, namely the high entropy van der Waals materials (HEX, HE = high entropy, X= anion clusters) and describe the current issues and next challenges. The design strategy for HEX has integrated the local feature (e.g., composition, spin, and valence states) of structural units in high entropy materials and the holistic degrees of freedom (e.g., stacking, twisting, and intercalating species) in van der Waals materials, and has been successfully employed for the discovery of high entropy dichalcogenides, phosphorus tri-chalcogenides, halogens, and MXene. The rich combination and random distribution of the multiple metallic constituents on the nearly-regular 2D lattice give rise to a flexible platform to study the correlation features behind a range of selected physical properties, e.g., superconductivity, magnetism, and metal-insulator transition. The deliberate design of structural units and their stacking configuration can also create novel catalysts to enhance their performance in a bunch of chemical reactions.

Insulator-metal-superconductor transition in medium-entropy van der Waals compound MEPSe3 (ME=Fe, Mn, Cd, and In) under high pressures

MPX3 (M=metals, X=S or Se) represents a large family of van der Waals (vdW) materials featuring with P-P dimers of ~2.3 Å separation. Its electrical transport property and structure can hardly be tuned by the intentional chemical doping and ionic intercalation. Here, we employ an entropy-enhancement strategy to successfully obtain a series of medium-entropy compounds MEPSe3 (ME=Fe, Mn, Cd and In), in which the electrical and magnetic properties changed simultaneously. Lone-pair electrons of P emerge due to the dissociation of the dimers as evidenced by a 35% elongation in the P-P interatomic distance. The band gap widens from 0.1 eV to 0.7 eV by this dissociation. Under external physical pressure up to ~50 GPa, a giant collapse of up to 15% in the c-axis happens, which is in contrast to the in-plane shrinkage of their counterparts Fe/MnPSe3. It leads to the recombination of P3- with lone pair electrons into a P-P dimer and the smallest bulk modulus of 28 GPa in MPX3. The MEPSe3 transits from a spin-glass insulator to metal, and to superconductor, which is rarely observed in the MPX3. Our findings highlight the P-P dimer as an indicator to probe diverse electronic structure and the effectiveness of entropy-enhancement in materials science.

Delicate Superconductivity in NaAlGe Single Crystal

Nodal-line superconductor NaAlSi with a transition temperature ($T_c$) of 7 K has attracted considerable attention in recent years, whereas its Ge counterpart, NaAlGe, does not superconduct down to the lowest temperature regardless of their similar atomic and electrical structures. To tackle this enigma, we resort to the growth of NaAlGe single crystal and characterize its semimetallic ground state. Interestingly, when hole doped by oxidation, single-crystalline NaAlGe transforms from a semimetal to a superconductor ($T_c = 2.3 \sim$ 3.5 K) with zero resistivity and a diamagnetic shielding fraction over 100$\%$, but without a thermodynamic response in heat capacity. Continuous x-ray diffraction reveals a transient new structure with a larger $c$ axis, which is suggested to have arisen from the minor loss of Na and to be responsible for the emergence of the delicate superconductivity. Our findings resolve the controversies in NaAlSi and NaAlGe, while their similarities and differences provide an ideal opportunity to investigate a variety of exciting topological quantum states.

Strong Neel ordering and luminescence correlation in a two-dimensional antiferromagnet

Magneto-optical effect has been widely used in light modulation, optical sensing and information storage. Recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals layered magnets are considered as promising platforms for investigating novel magneto-optical phenomena and devices, due to the long-range magnetic ordering down to atomically-thin thickness, rich species and tunable properties. However, majority 2D antiferromagnets suffer from low luminescence efficiency which hinders their magneto-optical investigations and applications. Here, we uncover strong light-magnetic ordering interactions in 2D antiferromagnetic MnPS3 utilizing a newly-emerged near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) mode far below its intrinsic bandgap. This ingap PL mode shows strong correlation with the Neel ordering and persists down to monolayer thickness. Combining the DFT, STEM and XPS, we illustrate the origin of the PL mode and its correlation with Neel ordering, which can be attributed to the oxygen ion-mediated states. Moreover, the PL strength can be further tuned and enhanced using ultraviolet-ozone treatment. Our studies offer an effective approach to investigate light-magnetic ordering interactions in 2D antiferromagnetic semiconductors.

Evolution of Superatomic-Charge-density-wave and Superconductivity under Pressure in AuTe$_2$Se$_{4/3}$

Superatomic crystal is a class of hierarchical materials composed of atomically precise clusters assembled via van der Waals or covalent-like interactions. AuTe$_2$Se$_{4/3}$, an all-inorganic superatomic superconductor exhibiting superatomic-charge-density-wave (S-CDW), provides a first platform to study the response of their collectively quantum phenomenon to the external pressure in superatomic crystals. We reveal a competition between S-CDW and superconductivity using cutting-edge measurements on thin flakes at low pressures. Prominently, the pressure modulation of S-CDW ordering is 1$\sim$2 order of magnitudes (0.1 GPa) lower than that of conventional atomic superconductors. As pressure increases to 2.5 GPa, the $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$ is suppressed and the superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) is firstly enhanced, and reaches the maximum then quenches with increasing pressure. Above 7.3 GPa, a second superconducting phase emerges, and then a three-fold enhancement in the transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) happens. Analyses of the crystal structure and theoretical calculations suggest a pressure-mediated switch of the conduction channel from the $a$- to the $b$-axis occur, followed by a dimensional crossover of conductivity and the Fermi surface from 2D to 3D.

Caging-Pnictogen-Induced Superconductivity in Skutterudites IrX3 (X = As, P)

Here we report on a new kind of compound, XδIr4X12-δ (X = P, As), the first hole-doped skutterudites superconductor. We provide atomic resolution images of the caging As atoms using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). By inserting As atoms into the caged structure under a high pressure, superconductivity emerges with a maximum transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4 K (4.8 K) in IrAs3 (IrP3). In contrast to all of the electron-doped skutterudites, the electronic states around the Fermi level in XδIr4X12-δ are dominated by the caged X atom, which can be described by a simple body-centered tight-binding model, implying a distinct paring mechanism. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal an intimate relationship between the pressure-dependent local-phonon mode and the enhancement of Tc. The discovery of XδIr4X12-δ provides an arena to investigate the uncharted territory of hole-doped skutterudites, and the method proposed here represents a new strategy of carrier doping in caged structures, without introducing extra elements.

Two-Dimensional Electron Gas with High Mobility Forming at BaO/SrTiO3 Interface

Two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed at the interface between two insulating oxides offers an opportunity for fundamental research and device applications. Binary alkaline earth metal oxides possess compatible lattice constants with both silicon and perovskite oxides, exhibiting an enormous potential to bridging those two materials classes for multifunctionalities. Here we report the formation of 2DEG at the interface between the rock-salt BaO and SrTiO3. The highest electron mobility reaches 69000 cm^2 V.S^-1 at 2 K, leading to the typical Shubniko de Haas (SdH) oscillations under the high magnetic fields. The presence of SdH oscillations at different field-angles reveals a quasi-two-dimensional character of the Fermi surface. The first-principles calculations suggest that the effective charge transfer from the BaO to Ti 3dxy orbital at the interfaces is responsible to the observed high carrier mobility. Our results demonstrate that the BaO/STO heterointerface is a platform for exploring the correlated quantum phases, opening a door to the low-power and mesoscopic electronic devices.

A new quasi-one-dimensional superconductor parent compound NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ with lower antiferromagnetic transition temperatures

Mn-based superconductor is rare and recently reported in quasi-one-dimensional KMn$_6$Bi$_5$ with [Mn$_6$Bi$_5$]-columns under high pressure. Here we report the synthesis, magnetic properties, electrical resistivity, and specific heat capacity of the newly-discovered quasi-one-dimensional NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ single crystal. Compared with other AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs), NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ has larger intra-column Bi-Bi bond length, which may result in the two decoupled antiferromagnetic transitions at 47.3 K and 52.3 K. The relatively lower antiferromagnetic transition temperatures make NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ a more suitable platform to explore Mn-based superconductors. Anisotropic resistivity and non-Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature are observed. Heat capacity measurement reveals that NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$ has similar Debye temperature with those of AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K and Rb), whereas the Sommerfeld coefficient is unusually large. Using first-principles calculations, the quite different density of states and an unusual enhancement near the Fermi level are observed for NaMn$_6$Bi$_5$, when compared with those of other AMn$_6$Bi$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs) compounds.

Discovery of two families of VSb-based compounds with V-kagome lattice

We report the structure and physical properties of two newly-discovered compounds AV8Sb12 and AV6Sb6 (A = Cs, Rb), which have C2 (space group: Cmmm) and C3 (space group: R-3m) symmetry, respectively. The basic V-kagome unit is present in both compounds, but stacking differently. A V2Sb2 layer is sandwiched between two V3Sb5 layers in AV8Sb12, altering the V-kagome lattice and lowering the symmetry of kagome layer from hexagonal to orthorhombic. In AV6Sb6, the building block is a more complex slab made up of two half-V3Sb5 layers that are intercalated by Cs cations along the c-axis. Transport property measurements demonstrate that both compounds are nonmagnetic metals, with carrier concentrations at around 1021cm-3. No superconductivity has been observed in CsV8Sb12 above 0.3 K under in-situ pressure up to 46 GPa. In contrast to CsV3Sb5, theoretical calculations and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) reveal a quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure in CsV8Sb12 with C2 symmetry and no van Hove singularities near the Fermi level. Our findings will stimulate more research into V-based kagome quantum materials.

Spatially separated superconductivity and enhanced charge-density-wave ordering in IrTe2 nano-flake

The interplay among various collective electronic states such as superconductivity (SC) and charge density wave (CDW) is of tremendous significance in low-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides. Thus far, a consensus on the relationship between SC and CDW has not been established in IrTe2, where either competing or collaboration pictures have been suggested in the bulk or thick flakes. Here, we use the state-of-art Au-assisted exfoliation method to overcome the obstacle of interlayer Te-Te bonding, cleaving the IrTe2 down to monolayer for the first time. A striking feature revealed by angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy (ARPRS) and electrical transport measurements is the concurrence of phase separation in one single piece of nano-flake, i.e. the superconducting (P-3m1) and CDW (P-3) area. In the pure SC area, the dimensional fluctuations completely suppress the CDW ordering and induce SC at 3.5 K. Meanwhile, the pure CDW area with much enhanced TCDW at 605 K (compared to TCDW = 280 K in bulk) is always accompanied by a unique wrinkle pattern. Detailed analyses suggest the local strain-induced bond breaking of the Te-Te dimer facilitates the emergence of the CDW order. Our works provide compelling evidence of competition between SC and CDW, highlighting the importance of microstructure in determining the ground states of IrTe2.

Spin-flip-driven giant magneto-transport in A-type antiferromagnet NaCrTe2

For anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) effect, its value synergistically depends on the magnitudes of magneto-resistance (MR) and magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) simultaneously. In a magnetic material, the concurrence of gigantic AMR and MR signals is rather difficult due to weak spin-lattice coupling and small MAE. Here we report the considerable magneto-transport effect in layered A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) NaCrTe2 by realigning the spin configurations. By applying H, the antiparallel spins of adjacent layers are flipped to ferromagnetic (FM) coupling either Ising-type along c-axis or XY-type within ab-plane. Theoretical calculations reveal that the energy bandgap narrows from 0.39 eV to 0.11 eV, accompanying a transition from semiconductor (high-R state) and half-semiconductor (low-R state), respectively. Thus, gigantic negative MR ratio of -90% is obtained at 10 K. More importantly, the decrement of R along H//c is far quicker than that of H//ab because the MAE of Ising-FM state is 1017 μeV/Cr3+ lower than that of XY-FM. The distinct trends result in the AMR ratio of 732% at 10 K, which is the record value to our best knowledge. These findings unravel the intrinsic origin of magneto in NaCrTe2 and will stimulate us to exploring the H-sensitive transport property in more AFM materials.

Non-extensive statistical distributions of charmed meson production in Pb-Pb and pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions

The mid-rapidity transverse-momentum spectra of charmed meson in Pb-Pb and pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions are analyzed by Tsallis-Pareto distribution derived from non-extensive statistics. We perform uniform descriptions for both small and large systems over a wide range of collision energy and hadron transverse momentum. By establishing the relation between the event multiplicity and the Tsallis parameters, we observe that there is significant linearity between thermal temperature and Tsallis-q parameter in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV. And the slope of the T $-$ (q - 1) parameter is positively correlated with the hadron mass. In addition, the charm mesons have higher thermal temperature than the light hadrons at the same q - 1, indicating that charmed flavor requires a higher temperature to achieve the same degree of non-extensive as light flavors in the heavy-ion collision. The same fit is performed to the transverse momentum spectra of charmed meson in pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collision over a large energy range with Tsallis-Pareto distribution. It is found that the thermal temperature increases with system energy while the q parameter shows a saturated trend and stops at pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) limit, q - 1 = 0.142 $\pm$ 0.010. Meanwhile, the results of most peripheral Pb-Pb collisions are found to approach the pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) limit, which suggests that less medium effect and more in similarity with pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions are found in more peripheral heavy-ion collisions.

Competition of superconductivity and charge density wave in selective oxidized CsV3Sb5 thin flakes

The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with vanadium kagome networks provide a novel platform to explore correlated quantum states intertwined with topological band structures. Here we report the prominent effect of hole doping on both superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) order, achieved by selective oxidation of exfoliated thin flakes. A superconducting dome is revealed as a function of the effective doping content. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\mathrm{c}}$) and upper critical field in thin flakes are significantly enhanced compared with the bulk, which is accompanied by the suppression of CDW. Our detailed analyses establish the pivotal role of van Hove singularities (VHSs) in promoting correlated quantum orders in these kagome metals. Our experiment not only demonstrates the intriguing nature of superconducting and CDW orders, but also provides a novel route to tune the carrier concentration through both selective oxidation and electric gating. This establishes AV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a tunable 2D platform for the further exploration of topology and correlation among 3$d$ electrons in kagome lattices.
