Exponential integrability properties of numerical approximation processes for nonlinear stochastic differential equations

Exponential integrability properties of numerical approximations are a key tool for establishing positive rates of strong and numerically weak convergence for a large class of nonlinear stochastic differential equations. It turns out that well-known numerical approximation processes such as Euler-Maruyama approximations, linear-implicit Euler approximations, and some tamed Euler approximations from the literature rarely preserve exponential integrability properties of the exact solution. The main contribution of this article is to identify a class of stopped increment-tamed Euler approximations which preserve exponential integrability properties of the exact solution under minor additional assumptions on the involved functions.

Sharp mean-square regularity results for SPDEs with fractional noise and optimal convergence rates for the numerical approximations

This article offers sharp spatial and temporal mean-square regularity results for a class of semi-linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by infinite dimensional fractional Brownian motion with the Hurst parameter greater than one-half. In addition, mean-square numerical approximation of such problem are investigated, performed by the spectral Galerkin method in space and the linear implicit Euler method in time. The obtained sharp regularity properties of the problems enable us to identify optimal mean-square convergence rates of the full discrete scheme. These theoretical findings are accompanied by several numerical examples.

An accelerated exponential time integrator for semi-linear stochastic strongly damped wave equation with additive noise

This paper is concerned with the strong approximation of a semi-linear stochastic wave equation with strong damping, driven by additive noise. Based on a spatial discretization performed by a spectral Galerkin method, we introduce a kind of accelerated exponential time integrator involving linear functionals of the noise. Under appropriate assumptions, we provide error bounds for the proposed full-discrete scheme. It is shown that the scheme achieves higher strong order in time direction than the order of temporal regularity of the underlying problem, which allows for higher convergence rate than usual time-stepping schemes. For the space-time white noise case in two or three spatial dimensions, the scheme still exhibits a good convergence performance. Another striking finding is that, even for the velocity with low regularity the scheme always promises first order strong convergence in time. Numerical examples are finally reported to confirm our theoretical findings.

Full discretisation of semi-linear stochastic wave equations driven by multiplicative noise

A fully discrete approximation of the semi-linear stochastic wave equation driven by multiplicative noise is presented. A standard linear finite element approximation is used in space and a stochastic trigonometric method for the temporal approximation. This explicit time integrator allows for mean-square error bounds independent of the space discretisation and thus do not suffer from a step size restriction as in the often used Störmer-Verlet-leap-frog scheme. Furthermore, it satisfies an almost trace formula (i.e., a linear drift of the expected value of the energy of the problem). Numerical experiments are presented and confirm the theoretical results.

Error estimates of finite element method for semi-linear stochastic strongly damped wave equation

In this paper, we consider a semi-linear stochastic strongly damped wave equation driven by additive Gaussian noise. Following a semigroup framework, we establish existence, uniqueness and space-time regularity of a mild solution to such equation. Unlike the usual stochastic wave equation without damping, the underlying problem with space-time white noise (Q = I) allows for a mild solution with a positive order of regularity in multiple spatial dimensions. Further, we analyze a spatio-temporal discretization of the problem, performed by a standard finite element method in space and a well-known linear implicit Euler scheme in time. The analysis of the approximation error forces us to significantly enrich existing error estimates of semidiscrete and fully discrete finite element methods for the corresponding linear deterministic equation. The main results show optimal convergence rates in the sense that the orders of convergence in space and in time coincide with the orders of the spatial and temporal regularity of the mild solution, respectively. Numerical examples are finally included to confirm our theoretical findings.

Weak error estimates of the exponential Euler scheme for semi-linear SPDEs without Malliavin calculus

This paper deals with the weak error estimates of the exponential Euler method for semi-linear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs). A weak error representation formula is first derived for the exponential integrator scheme in the context of truncated SPDEs. The obtained formula that enjoys the absence of the irregular term involved with the unbounded operator is then applied to a parabolic SPDE. Under certain mild assumptions on the nonlinearity, we treat a full discretization based on the spectral Galerkin spatial approximation and provide an easy weak error analysis, which does not rely on Malliavin calculus.

An exponential integrator scheme for time discretization of nonlinear stochastic wave equation

This work is devoted to convergence analysis of an exponential integrator scheme for semi-discretization in time of nonlinear stochastic wave equation. A unified framework is first set forth, which covers important cases of additive and multiplicative noises. Within this framework, the proposed scheme is shown to converge uniformly in the strong $L^p$-sense with precise convergence rates given. The abstract results are then applied to several concrete examples. Further, weak convergence rates of the scheme are examined for the case of additive noise. To analyze the weak error for the nonlinear case, techniques based on the Malliavin calculus were usually exploited in the literature. Under certain appropriate assumptions on the nonlinearity, this paper provides a weak error analysis, which does not rely on the Malliavin calculus. The rates of weak convergence can, as expected, be improved in comparison with the strong rates. Both strong and weak convergence results obtained here show that the proposed method achieves higher convergence rates than the implicit Euler and Crank-Nicolson time discretizations. Numerical results are finally reported to confirm our theoretical findings.

The tamed Milstein method for commutative stochastic differential equations with non-globally Lipschitz continuous coefficients

For stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with a superlinearly growing and globally one-sided Lipschitz continuous drift coefficient, the classical explicit Euler scheme fails to converge strongly to the exact solution. Recently, an explicit strongly convergent numerical scheme, called the tamed Euler method, is proposed in [Hutzenthaler, Jentzen & Kloeden, Ann. Appl. Probab., 22 (2012), pp. 1611-1641.] for such SDEs. Motivated by their work, we here introduce a tamed version of the Milstein scheme for SDEs with commutative noise. The proposed method is also explicit and easily implementable, but achieves higher strong convergence order than the tamed Euler method does. In recovering the strong convergence order one of the new method, new difficulties arise and kind of a bootstrap argument is developed to overcome them. Finally, an illustrative example confirms the computational efficiency of the tamed Milstein method compared to the tamed Euler method.

Higher order strong approximations of semilinear stochastic wave equation with additive space-time white noise

Novel fully discrete schemes are developed to numerically approximate a semilinear stochastic wave equation driven by additive space-time white noise. Spectral Galerkin method is proposed for the spatial discretization, and exponential time integrators involving linear functionals of the noise are introduced for the temporal approximation. The resulting fully discrete schemes are very easy to implement and allow for higher strong convergence rate in time than existing time-stepping schemes such as the Crank-Nicolson-Maruyama scheme and the stochastic trigonometric method. Particularly, it is shown that the new schemes achieve in time an order of $1- ε$ for arbitrarily small $ε>0$, which exceeds the barrier order $\frac{1}{2}$ established by Walsh. Numerical results confirm higher convergence rates and computational efficiency of the new schemes.

Finding More Relevance: Propagating Similarity on Markov Random Field for Image Retrieval

To effectively retrieve objects from large corpus with high accuracy is a challenge task. In this paper, we propose a method that propagates visual feature level similarities on a Markov random field (MRF) to obtain a high level correspondence in image space for image pairs. The proposed correspondence between image pair reflects not only the similarity of low-level visual features but also the relations built through other images in the database and it can be easily integrated into the existing bag-of-visual-words(BoW) based systems to reduce the missing rate. We evaluate our method on the standard Oxford-5K, Oxford-105K and Paris-6K dataset. The experiment results show that the proposed method significantly improves the retrieval accuracy on three datasets and exceeds the current state-of-the-art retrieval performance.

Let $(M,g)$ be a complete noncompact non-collapsing $n$-dimensional riemannian manifold, whose complex sectional curvature is bounded from below and scalar curvature is bounded from above. Then ricci flow with above as its initial data, has at most one solution in the class of complete riemannian metric with complex sectional curvature bounded from below.

Constructing Hierarchical Image-tags Bimodal Representations for Word Tags Alternative Choice

This paper describes our solution to the multi-modal learning challenge of ICML. This solution comprises constructing three-level representations in three consecutive stages and choosing correct tag words with a data-specific strategy. Firstly, we use typical methods to obtain level-1 representations. Each image is represented using MPEG-7 and gist descriptors with additional features released by the contest organizers. And the corresponding word tags are represented by bag-of-words model with a dictionary of 4000 words. Secondly, we learn the level-2 representations using two stacked RBMs for each modality. Thirdly, we propose a bimodal auto-encoder to learn the similarities/dissimilarities between the pairwise image-tags as level-3 representations. Finally, during the test phase, based on one observation of the dataset, we come up with a data-specific strategy to choose the correct tag words leading to a leap of an improved overall performance. Our final average accuracy on the private test set is 100%, which ranks the first place in this challenge.

A Runge-Kutta type scheme for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative trace class noise

In this paper a new Runge-Kutta type scheme is introduced for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with multiplicative trace class noise. The proposed scheme converges with respect to the computational effort with a higher order than the well-known linear implicit Euler scheme. In comparison to the infinite dimensional analog of Milstein type scheme recently proposed in [Jentzen & Röckner (2012); A Milstein scheme for SPDEs, Arxiv preprint arXiv:1001.2751v4], our scheme is easier to implement and needs less computational effort due to avoiding the derivative of the diffusion function. The new scheme can be regarded as an infinite dimensional analog of Runge-Kutta method for finite dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equations (SODEs). Numerical examples are reported to support the theoretical results.

The improved split-step backward Euler method for stochastic differential delay equations

A new, improved split-step backward Euler (SSBE) method is introduced and analyzed for stochastic differential delay equations(SDDEs) with generic variable delay. The method is proved to be convergent in mean-square sense under conditions (Assumption 3.1) that the diffusion coefficient $g(x,y)$ is globally Lipschitz in both $x$ and $y$, but the drift coefficient $f(x,y)$ satisfies one-sided Lipschitz condition in $x$ and globally Lipschitz in $y$. Further, exponential mean-square stability of the proposed method is investigated for SDDEs that have a negative one-sided Lipschitz constant. Our results show that the method has the unconditional stability property in the sense that it can well reproduce stability of underlying system, without any restrictions on stepsize $h$. Numerical experiments and comparisons with existing methods for SDDEs illustrate the computational efficiency of our method.
